Picturing the Celestial City: The Medieval Stained Glass of Beauvais Cathedral, by Michael W. Cothren

The cathedral of Saint-Pierre in Beauvais, France, is most famous as a failure--its choir vaults came crashing down in 1284--and only secondarily for its soaring beauty. This lavishly illustrated and elegantly written book represents the first serious look at the stunning collection of Gothic stained glass windows that has always dominated the experience of those who enter Beauvais Cathedral.

Chapter by chapter, Michael Cothren traces the glazing through four successive campaigns that bridged the century between the 1240s and the 1340s. The reader is transported back in history, gaining fascinating insight into what the glazing of Beauvais actually would have looked like as well as what it would have communicated to those who frequented the cathedral. Contrary to the widespread assumption that these windows are heavily restored, Cothren shows that they are in fact surprisingly well preserved, especially in light of the cathedral's infamous history of architectural disaster.

More importantly, Cothren goes far to dismantle a long-held misconception about medieval painted windows, and indeed monumental medieval pictorial art in general: the notion that it was conceived and produced as a substitute text for ignorant, illiterate folks, providing for them a "Bible of the Poor." Indeed, Cothren shows us that stained glass windows, rich with shaded meanings, functioned more like sermon than scripture. As an ensemble, they created a radiant interpretive backdrop that explicated and situated the performance of the Mass in this giant liturgical theater.

Review
"[T]his is a splendid selection of both archival and recent photographs that provides excellent visual documentation. . . . [T]his book . . . without a doubt constitutes the most accessible scholarly study of the 13th- and 14th- century glazing of Beauvais Cathedral to date and is likely long to remain so. . . . Cothren hs not only worked out the chronology of the glas brilliantly; he presents it here with admirable clarity."--James Bugslag, Journal of Stained Glass

"Cothren's agility in choosing the appropriate means with which to tease out a possible solution to a given problem allows him to embrace the multifaceted approach crucial to an understanding of the monument as a whole. His visual observations of the figural as well as physiognomic style in each window, carried out on a microanalytic level, elicit questions and suggestions that lead to the most complete investigation of the glazing program of Beauvais up to the present time."--Mary Weitzel Gibbons, Church History

From the Back Cover

"Picturing the Celestial City presents the Gothic stained glass of Beauvais Cathedral in the first and only serious scholarly venture ever undertaken, and it does so superbly. Beauvais is one of the great French Gothic cathedrals discussed in every architectural survey--the tallest and the 'final' one of the series, its audacity checkmated by the collapse of the high vaults in 1284. Cothren has a magnificent command of the growing body of research about it and makes an enormous contribution to the research. His scholarship is sound and thorough, and his writing is fluent, graceful, and convincing."--Meredith P. Lillich, Syracuse University

"Not only will this book--by a scholar in high esteem in the field--be a staple for scholars and students of medieval stained glass. Addressing as it does the medieval life of the cathedral in a broadly defined spirit, it will also be welcomed by those interested generally in Gothic architecture and medieval architecture who seek insight into the entire cathedral and its life."--Stephen Murray, Columbia University

About the Author
Michael W. Cothren is Professor of Art History at Swarthmore College and consultative curator at the Glencairn Museum, home to one of the most distinguished collections of medieval stained glass in the United States.

A profound, beautiful and erudite book
By P. Hunt
PICTURING THE CELESTIAL CITY is an astonishingly beautiful book: majestic in plan, magisterial in execution. Perhaps the most profound work on stained glass anywhere in the English language, every word choice has been carefully weighed. Attentive to detail without inundating the reader in a rain of leaden statistics, dates and archival information that can be so deadly in current art historical trends, instead this book is a revelation of the age that built Beauvais and the era and faith that rebuilt it after the collapse of the highest Gothic choir in 1284. Each stained glass window is annotated in full color with oldest to latest restorations shown precisely in place, each window's historical and thematic context presented, plus historical photos show Beauvais before and after devastating world wars. Two of my favorite crafted sections are Cothren's wry tale of the Theophilus Window cycle about this anecdotal Faustian bishop who made a pact with a devil only to later repent (pp. 71-96) and Cothren's fine sleuthing of noble 14th century cathedral window sponsor Bishop Jean de Marigny (pp. 155-159 & ff) whose subtle religious symbolism survive in the sublime windows created for him. Biblical passages amply illustrate the divine Celestial City's visions of light and hope. A must for stained glass studies and clearly a labor of love that took many scribal years, this lavish book sets the highest standard, for which the publisher Princeton must be gratified.

10 STARS
By Eric
Despite it's weight, I couldn't resist lugging it to Beauvais, and around France with me. 10 stars out of 5. I really wish similar works existed for other great places. It distinguishes (with clarity and specificity) in what century or decade the different works and details were done. For me, the details of restorations done after the 15th century are unimportant, but its refreshing to get "too much information" rather than too little, or none.

This fast-paced book by Yale professors Michael Graetz and Ian Shapiro unravels the following mystery: How is it that the estate tax, which has been on the books continuously since 1916 and is paid by only the wealthiest two percent of Americans, was repealed in 2001 with broad bipartisan support? The mystery is all the more striking because the repeal was not done in the dead of night, like a congressional pay raise. It came at the end of a multiyear populist campaign launched by a few individuals, and was heralded by its supporters as a signal achievement for Americans who are committed to the work ethic and the American Dream.

Graetz and Shapiro conducted wide-ranging interviews with the relevant players: members of congress, senators, staffers from the key committees and the Bush White House, civil servants, think tank and interest group representatives, and many others. The result is a unique portrait of American politics as viewed through the lens of the death tax repeal saga. Graetz and Shapiro brilliantly illuminate the repeal campaign's many fascinating and unexpected turns--particularly the odd end result whereby the repeal is slated to self-destruct a decade after its passage. They show that the stakes in this fight are exceedingly high; the very survival of the long standing American consensus on progressive taxation is being threatened.

Graetz and Shapiro's rich narrative reads more like a political drama than a conventional work of scholarship. Yet every page is suffused by their intimate knowledge of the history of the tax code, the transformation of American conservatism over the past three decades, and the wider political implications of battles over tax policy.

Review
Honorable Mention for the 2005 Award for Best Professional/Scholarly Book in Government and Political Science, Association of American Publishers

"This is one of the most interesting books about politics, and power, and the way the world is going, that you are ever likely to read. What makes it so fascinating is that it is a mystery story. The mystery is this: how did the repeal of a tax that applies only to the richest 2 percent of American families become a cause so popular and so powerful that it steamrollered all the opposition placed in its way. . . . This is not simply a story about the United States. . . . [T]he moral of the tale is far wider than that. . . . Instead this is a tale about the power of narrative in politics, and the increasing ease with which individual stories can be made the be-all and end-all of political debate."--David Runciman, London Review of Books

"[Michael] Graetz . . . And [Ian] Shapiro . . . Set out to unravel what on the surface appears a mystery . . . Fueled a grassroots campaign that ended up throwing Democrats on the defensive. . . . Graetz and Shapiro make a convincing case that propaganda was not the chief reason the campaign to repeal the estate tax gathered steam. A far more important factor was that throughout the 1990s, the only people in Washington making impassioned moral arguments about it were antitax conservatives."--Eyal Press, The Nation

"Public-policy reporting at its finest. But Death by a Thousand Cuts is much more. It is also an important manual on moral arguments in contemporary politics."--David Cay Johnston, The American Prospect

"[A] lively legislative chronicle."--Amith Shlaes, Financial Times

"An elegant exegesis of the broad-based political forces that were brought together to fight against a tax that affects only the richest 1% to 2%. . . . There is a moral argument in favor of estate taxes that deserves to be heard above the clatter of the repeal juggernaut. This book is one of the first peeps in its defense."--Elizabeth Bailey, The New York Sun

"Death by a Thousand Cuts is a timely and important book. . . [I]t provides an enlightening and insightful account of the American political and tax systems."--Theodore Pollack, New York Law Journal

"Graetz and Shapiro are at their best when depicting the subterranean interplay between activists, think tanks, lobbyists, and donors that fuels federal politics."--Daniel Franklin, Washington Monthly

"How could a tax paid by only the richest 2 percent of Americans become a cause célèbre for a broad swath of middle-class farmers, businessmen and average Joes? [Graetz and Shapiro] provide a fascinating and readable explanation."--Jonathan Weisman, Washington Post

"The book is engaging, enlightening, and thought-provoking. . . . Graetz and Shapiro have written a remarkable book that deserves a wide audience. Their account of 'the fight over taxing inherited wealth' is notable not only for its sophisticated and penetrating analysis, but also for its scrupulous fairness."--Karen C. Burke and Grayson M.P. McCouch, Tax Notes

"Instead of rehashing the tired arguments about whether or not the estate tax should exist, these scholars undertook an incredible series of high-level interviews with the leading actors involved in this critical debate. The result is an easily accessible but highly insightful examination of the tax climate in early 21st century America. . . . Death by a Thousand Cuts clearly sounds a wake-up call to anyone who has not already seen how much the political center has shifted regarding the fundamental issues of what government should do and who should pay for it."--Richard L. Kaplan, National Tax Journal

"However you feel about the death tax, the book will make you glad that the power that controls our deaths is not the same one that controls our taxes."--Accounting Today

Review
Here we are, in the midst of great affluence and a badly skewed distribution of income. Yet, somehow, efforts are well advanced to abolish the estate tax as a first step toward ending the century-old consensus on the idea of progressivity in taxation. Michael Graetz and Ian Shapiro tell in vivid detail the sad (at least to me) story of how that is happening.
(Paul Volcker, former chairman of the Federal Reserve )

From the Inside Flap
"An immensely readable and illuminating look at the estate tax issue and its implications for future American tax policy."--Bill Bradley, former United States Senator

"[A] compelling book--a story that should be read by everyone who wants to understand the new power players of the right and their next target: the income tax system itself. When two of America's best academics combine theory with shoe leather reporting, the results are splendid."--David Gergen, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University; former White House Advisor to presidents Nixon, Ford, Reagan, and Clinton.

""Death By a Thousand Cuts is a marvelous book. I think of it as sort of a "Moneyball" for politics, with the role of Billy Bean played by Grover Norquist. The story of how Norquist and company pulled one over on the Democrats (and perhaps centrists of all stripes) is a great read. The book is certain to become a bible for inside-the-beltway readers, but it should be read by a very wide audience. The book changed the way I think about the politics of the estate tax debate. In fact, the book has changed my views about the politics of a number of related issues."--Joe Bankman, Stanford University School of Law

Explains what happened & why
By John Harllee
As its subtitle indicates, the book is about the nitty-gritty details of how the near-repeal of the estate tax got enacted into law. The authors discuss tax policy only tangentially: their focus is on who did what and why. Some actors on both sides acted out of idealistic (or, if you prefer, ideological) motives, many out of self-interested motives. According to the book, the pro-repeal forces were shrewd and far-sighted, whereas the anti-repeal forces were slow and weak. For example, charities have a strong interest in preservation of the estate tax, but were not effective in opposition to repeal, because they did not want to offend their donors and boards of directors. Having finished the book, I now believe I understand what happened. I even understand why the estate tax dies in 2010 and then springs back to life in 2011, a situation that seems insane, but which is a perfectly logical consequence of arcane Senate procedural rules interacting with the fact that the pro-repeal forces had no hope of mustering 60 votes in the Senate.

Disappointing but useful
By Jonathan Brown
This book was written by two distinguished experts on tax policy and reviews the development of the campaign to end estate taxes at the federal level. In many cases it is quite informative. But compared to Jeffrey Birnbaum's book on the development of tax policy in Congress (Showdown at Guccci Gulch) is it quite light in a couple of areas.

The book begins with three questions - fundamentally, how did the coalition that formed get together, how did the repeal coalition successfully resist amendments, and finally how did an item like this (seemingly without a high level of support and which cost a lot of revenue and only affects a small number of people) not cause more generalized opposition to the Bush tax bill?

The book is excellent in some of its history (especially the chapter about the use of science in public policy) but is weaker in telling the story of how the current provision was adopted in a consistent manner. The description of the initial phases of the development of the coalition is pretty detailed. The coalition brought together some seemingly disparate interests.

Where the book falls down is in two areas. First, there are some amazing omissions in this book. Bill Gates' father was indeed a leader of the opposition - but at no place in the book does the narrative explain that Gates' father was an attorney who helped to structure estates and thus had a direct interest in the continuation of the tax. At the same time the authors keep coming back to themes - for example, a minor figure in the fight (farm owner Chester Thigpen) is highlighted more heavily than a key Senator like Max Baucus. I would also have liked to have these policy wonks think creatively about the elements of the estate tax which opponents might go forward with - when the inevitable fights come in the future. The opponents of repeal were inept - but how do they go forward? The last time the estate tax was eliminated (surprisingly not mentioned in the book) was in the 1954 revision - the problems which brought the tax back should be instructive to opponents of repeal.

The second area is the authors' limited understanding of how coalitions are built. This book should be more about the politics of the process. The concluding chapter decries the mix of research, politics and moral issues in the current political environment. Indeed, as one who writes about tax issues often, better research involvement could help the process. But the realities of politics that mix moral/philosophical issues and coalitions and evidence are what we should be thinking about.

So if you are interested in tax policy, this is a good book. But if you want to understand how tax policy is made in the real world - there are better books.

Some useful information
By K. Price
Michael Graetz and Ian Shapiro successfully explain the history of the estate tax, the lobbying battles over it, and the shift from consensus to its repeal in their book Death by a Thousand Cuts. By investigating a range of opinions from Congressmen to farmers, the authors effectively portray how the pro-estate tax side underestimated the ability of organization, group affiliation, and passion to bring about the repeal of a tax that had been accepted without contest for generations. The authors criticize the efforts of large groups and Democratic congressman to organize against the repeal - by illuminating the fact that there was too little organization. While the book provides an accurate and thorough account of the lobbying process that helped lead to the repeal of the estate tax, it provides much unnecessary detail and is obvious in its bias against the repeal of the tax.

For readers who are uneducated in the history of opinions on taxes, Graetz and Shapiro thoroughly describe the evolution of progressive taxation. While not clearly defined in the book, progressive taxation can be explained as a tax that increases as a person's income increases. They describe the shift of opinion on the estate tax when the Republicans made estate tax reform part of their "Contract with America." (Graetz and Shapiro, 15) By using rhetorical frames and spins, pro-repeal groups were able to effectively present the estate tax not as a tax only affecting 2.4% of the wealthy, but as a "death" tax that could potentially "punish" family businesses and farmers by double-taxing their hard earned money. In other words, the authors show how the pro-repealists were successful in presenting the tax in a way that best supported their cause. The authors do a good job showing how much influence organized interest groups can have on government decisions. While the repeal of the estate tax might not necessarily have been a practical crusade, it was a passionate one that eventually won out against the greater good of society and economy, in the opinion of the authors. By putting direct pressure on members of the legislature, pro-repeal groups built a coalition including large numbers of business owners, gays, and the working class, thus encouraging politicians that it would be beneficial to represent and support their cause. With a few wealthy elites being represented by large groups of non-estate tax payers, effective lobbying became the force behind the tax repeal. While the estate tax may have actually benefited some people who worked for its repeal, a pluralistic system prevailed and ended up benefiting the few elites who represented only a fraction of the masses. For an ordinary reader or college student who is unaware of how effective lobbying can be in enhancing American democracy, the authors do a great job portraying the process.

The authors also do a good job providing simple facts on the tax, such as its ability to tax the deceased estate up to 55% and the subsequent $24 billion in government revenue. While they covered some of the services and people who benefit from the tax, they could have been more specific in displaying the direct economic benefits of keeping the estate tax around. If the authors favor the tax, which seems to be the bias throughout the book, why do they not put more effort into displaying its benefits? Despite this lack of information, the authors do a good job explaining the basic components of the tax for readers unknowledgeable on the subject.

When writing about such a widely debated topic, the authors would have benefited by being more cautious in displaying their bias towards keeping the tax around. It tends to distract from their entire argument. From the very beginning, they describe the pro-repeal group's goals as being ones of "conviction and anger" in place of "practicality" (Graetz and Shapiro, 23). While this might be true, blatantly stating their bias against the pro-repeal argument is a good way of losing the reader's trust. Instead of making readers cope with the bias, the author's argument would have been stronger if they would have merely shown the impracticality of the pro-repealists.

The authors also include much un-needed information in the book that tends to get repetitive and boring. Describing all characters by their eye color or ability to cook tends to lose its appeal by the sixteenth chapter when the authors describe Bob Johnson and the paintings covering his walls and his casual way of dressing in black pants and a black polo sweater. Is all this information necessary?

Overall, the book provides good background details on the estate tax and displays the ability of interest groups to change the American government. Graetz and Shapiro successfully provide readers with an educating, enjoyable read that was easy to follow and understand. While it could have been improved by eliminating the obvious bias and the un-needed details, it provides a good look at American government and the power of group affiliation in reaching a goal - whether practical or not.

Beginning with Jung's earliest correspondence to associates of the psychoanalytic period and ending shortly before his death, the 935 letters selected for these two volumes offer a running commentary on his creativity. The recipients of the letters include Mircea Eliade, Sigmund Freud, Esther Harding, James Joyce, Karl Kernyi, Erich Neumann, Maud Oakes, Herbert Read, Upton Sinclair, and Father Victor White.

Review
"Extraordinarily valuable.... Whether writing a disquisition on an obscure point of theology to Father Victor White or advice to an anonymous correspondent who wondered whether she should commit suicide...Jung commits himself entirely to the question and to the moment.... [The] Letters are indispensable and a beautiful production."--James Olney, The New Republic

"What [Jung] offers from the furnace of his mind is near enough to that Philosopher's Stone sought by his old friends the alchemists to hold us enchanted through unnumbered re-readings."--Robertson Davies, The New York Times Book Review

From the Back Cover
Over many years Jung had frequently used the medium of letters to communicate his ideas to the outside world and to rectify misinterpretations about which he felt sufficiently strongly, quite apart from answering people who approached him with genuine problems of their own and corresponding with friends and professional colleagues. In this way many of his letters contained new creative ideas and a running commentary on his work.

mind-blowing, dogma-shattering
By Craig Chalquist, PhD, author of TERRAPSYCHOLOGY and DEEP CALIFORNIA
A very fine collection...with plenty of glimpses at Jung's trans-analytic speculations and personal reactions. Soulful and, in places, very funny too.

Review
"Mudra is filled with a wealth of information about the basic symbols of Buddhist sculpture, their possible origins, and their manifold meanings."--The Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism

"A good reference volume for the study of Buddhist art, symbolism and theory of symbols. Despite the fact that the subject is rooted in Indian art, the reference to Japanese sources opens the field to little known works which are hidden behind a language barrier."--Alfred Bloom, Harvard Divinity School Bulletin

"In this work we have scholarship at its best by a master of the subject."--J. Deotis Roberts, Journal of Religious Thought

I love the pictorial I just wish the photos were bigger & the print! Thank you for teaching how to be loving & expressing God with our bodies! I wish I could give 4.5 yet it's not an option! :) I was taught to learn these finger gestures by Buddha Maitreya The Christ & am so glad I did, this should be taught in schools & on television, in dance & sports, people shouldn't real worry it's labeled, I don't, I'm not Japanese Buddhist, yet I love the love in them & the love & woodworks in all the beings & religions, best read yet! :)

Judaism in Practice: From the Middle Ages through the Early Modern Period. From Brand: Princeton University Press

This collection of original materials provides a sweeping view of medieval and early modern Jewish ritual and religious practice. Including such diverse texts as ritual manuals, legal codes, mystical books, autobiographical writings, folk literature, and liturgical poetry, it testifies to the enormous variety of practices that characterized Judaism in the twelve hundred years between 600 and 1800 C.E. Its focus on religious practice and experience--how Judaism was actually lived by people from day to day--makes this anthology unique among the few sourcebooks available.

The volume encompasses the broad scope and complex texture of Jewish religious practice, taking into account many aspects of Jewish culture that have hitherto been relatively neglected: the religious life of ordinary people, the role and status of women, art and aesthetics, and marginalized as well as remote Jewish communities. It introduces such remarkable personalities as Moses Maimonides, Leon Modena, and Gluckel of Hameln, and presents extraordinary texts on festival practice, Torah study, mystical communities, meditation, exorcism, the practice of charity, and folk rites marking birth and death.

Representing state-of-the-art scholarship by distinguished academics from around the world, the volume includes many materials never before translated into English. Each text is preceded by an accessible introduction, making this book suitable for college and university students as well as a general audience. Whether read as a deliberate course of study or dipped into selectively for a glimpse into fascinating Jewish lives and places, Judaism in Practice holds rich rewards for any reader.

Review
"Lawrence Fine . . . has assembled an impressive array of writings that explore the variegated ways in which Jews have practiced their religion. . . . By giving us a variety of texts and materials that go beyond the boundaries of conventional sources, Fine has opened up ways of thinking about the Jewish experience that are likely to challenge readers' expectations. In doing so, he and his contributors raise essential questions about the nature of Judaism as a religion and a culture, shake readers out of complacency and leave us to wonder at the marvelous scope of the Jewish people's history."--Barry W. Holtz, The Forward

From the Inside Flap
"This is a rich collection. Fine has secured contributions, introductions, and a selection of materials from accomplished scholars in each area covered. There is no other volume like it. The book is well suited for an undergraduate readership in Jewish studies, and Fine's introduction is appropriate for readers encountering the study of Judaism for the first time."--Robert S. Schine, Middlebury College, author of Jewish Thought Adrift: Max Wiener

This book has a little of everything. Articles on History, Jewish Practice, Mysticism, and Biographies, to name a few of the topics presented. The articles are scholarly but easy enough for pleasurable reading.

Accompanying each article is section which provides sources for additional reading on the topics touched upon. Also accompanying each article, are a selection of the actual sources being discussed, enabling the reader to get a good feel of the material.

All in all, the interesting topics in addition to the two features listed above make this a good book.

Medieval to Early Modern Jewish Practices. Conflict Between the Hasidim and the Mitnagdim Portrayed as Bitter at Times
By Jan Peczkis
This work covers many topics, and has a few chapters on women in Judaism. It has sections dealing with the life cycle, Torah and learning, Jewish community life, etc. I focus on a few salient topics:

DIFFERENCES IN TRADITIONS

A number of chapters deal with the Karaites. They believed, contrary to rabbinical tradition, that one should refrain from lighting a fire before the Sabbath, and not just on the Sabbath itself. (Exodus 35:3). (Lawrence Fine, p. 25). The Karaites, distinct from the Rabbanite and rejecting the rabbinic tradition by the 8th-10 centuries A. D., today number about 20,000-25,000, and live mainly in the State of Israel, the USA, and Europe. (Daniel Frank, p. 249).

EXPANSIVE JEWISH LEGALISM EXPLAINED AND CLARIFIED

Author Lawrence Fine introduces this subject, (quote) In the course of this process the rabbis determined that there were 613 basic legal obligations or precepts (MITSVAH…) in the Torah. But from each of these 613 MITSVOT, the rabbis derived numerous further precepts, resulting in an ever-expanding body of Jewish law, or, as it came to be known, HALAKHA. The term “HALAKHA”, refers to the entirely of Jewish law, including the Mishnah and its subsequent development. A good example of this process may be seen in connection with the laws of the Sabbath. Whereas the Torah itself prescribes rest on the Sabbath, it provides very little specific guidance as to what such cessation from labor entails. When we turn, however, to the treatise of the Mishnah devoted to the laws of the Sabbath, we find that the sages delineated no fewer than thirty-nine types of activity that they regarded as labor. For each of these thirty-nine activities, rabbinic tradition derived still further precepts, thus exponentially expanding the laws and ritual governing the Sabbath. (unquote). (p. 4).

ONGOING ANTI-CHRISTIAN THEMES IN MEDIEVAL JUDAISM

Some commentators have asserted that Judaism had nothing to say about Christianity, that that Jews spoke up about Christianity only when Christians persecuted Jews. Such was not the case. In actuality, Judaism created a series of long-term anti-Christian rites and narratives.

Ivan G. Marcus writes, (quote) By weaving tougher elements from earlier Jewish traditions, Jews developed a ceremony in the late twelfth- or early thirteenth-century Germany and northern France that in many ways parodied and subverted aspects of Christian rituals and symbols…Eating special cakes baked with foods that symbolize Torah (flour, honey, milk, and oil), and shelled hard-boiled effs on which words of Torah were written served as a Jewish antidote to the increasingly more prominent central Christian rite of the Eucharist [eucharist in original] that bound Christians to one another and to the living sacrificed Christ. (unquote). (p. 116).

Author Marcus continues, (quote) By protectively wrapping the small Jewish boy in a coat or prayer shawl when he was carried from home to the teacher, Jews acted out the message that Jewish boys, not Jesus, were to be sacrificed—to a life of Torah study…the Jewish boy caressing his father’s cheek as he is brought to the schoolteacher and is seated on the teacher’s lap. These are Jewish adaptations of two well-known Madonna and Child types: the MATER AMABILIS (lovable mother) and the Throne of Wisdom, respectively… (unquote). (p. 116).

The foregoing can be generalized, (quote) They [Jews] often did this through rituals or narratives that denied and even mocked the competing stronger ideology of Christianity in medieval Europe. (unquote). (ibid, pp. 116-117).

Of course, not everything in the practice of Judaism was negatively oriented towards Christianity. For instance, Ephraim Kanarfogel (pp. 193-194) mentions a Jewish custom of ensconcing oneself, in one’s fortress, from worldly temptations, and devoting all one’s time for studying the holy work of God. He suggests that this was a form of Jewish emulation, and adaptation, of Christian monastic traditions. (pp. 193-194). The foregoing contradicts the notion, advanced by some, that Judaism unilaterally frowned upon Christian ascetic practices as a denial of God-given joys.

THE HASIDIM AND THE MITNAGDIM

Author Arthur Green characterizes Hasidism, like the earlier Kabbalah, as a mystical tradition. Does Hasidism blur the distinction between the Creator and the creation? Though Green does not go this far, he does make this comment, (quote) Thus Hasidism constantly struggles, for example, to find elements of its own semi-pantheistic God concept in the highly personified theology of the biblical and early rabbinic sources. (unquote). (p. 401).

Author Allan Nadler portrays the conflict between the Hasidim and the Mitnagdim as one that sometimes turned bitter. The Gaon of Vilna led the struggle of the Mitnagdim against the Hasidim. Nadler adds that, (quote) The Mitnagdim not only polemicized against Hasidic doctrine; they waged an uncompromising war against its practitioners, placing them under the rabbinic ban of excommunication and, when possible, denouncing their zaddikim (Hasidic religious leaders; lit. righteous men) as subversives to the tsarist authorities. (unquote). (p. 513).

UPSHEERIN: THE HAIR-CUTTING RITE

Author Ivan G. Marcus describes the practice, derived from ancient times, among 18th- or 19th century Jews, of cutting a Jewish boy's hair when he turned three years old. This compared the child to a new fruit tree whose yield can now be harvested. (pp. 118-119).

I find UPSHEERIN personally interesting. We are not Jewish, but, when I was about three years old, my mother cut off some hairs of mine and saved them.

Imago Dei: The Byzantine Apologia for Icons (The A. W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts), by Jaroslav Pelikan

In 726 the Byzantine emperor, Leo III, issued an edict that all religious images in the empire were to be destroyed, a directive that was later endorsed by a synod of the Church in 753 under his son, Constantine V. If the policy of Iconoclasm had succeeded, the entire history of Christian art--and of the Christian church, at least in the East--would have been altered.

Iconoclasm was defeated--by Byzantine politics, by popular revolts, by monastic piety, and, most fundamentally of all, by theology, just as it had been theology that the opponents of images had used to justify their actions. Analyzing an intriguing chapter in the history of ideas, the renowned scholar Jaroslav Pelikan shows how a faith that began by attacking the worship of images ended first in permitting and then in commanding it.

Pelikan charts the theological defense of icons during the Iconoclastic controversies of the eighth and ninth centuries, whose high point came in A.D. 787, when the Second Council of Nicaea restored the cult of images in the church. He demonstrates how the dogmas of the Trinity and the Incarnation eventually provided the basic rationale for images: because the invisible God had become human and therefore personally visible in Jesus Christ, it became permissible to make images of that Image. And because not only the human nature of Christ, but that of his Mother had been transformed by the Incarnation, she, too, could be "iconized," together with all the other saints and angels.

The iconographic "text" of the book is provided by one of the very few surviving icons from the period before Iconoclasm, the Egyptian tapestry Icon of the Virgin now in the Cleveland Museum of Art. Other icons serve to illustrate the theological argument, just as the theological argument serves to explain the icons.

In a new foreword, Judith Herrin discusses the enduring importance of the book, provides a brief biography of Pelikan, and discusses how later scholars have built on his work.

Review
"[Pelikan's] extraordinary breadth as a historian, not to mention his mastery of the Christian theological traditions, enables him to establish a proper context and a necessary rhetoric for the exploration of Byzantine icons."--John Wesley Cook, Theology Today

"[T]his book is genuine cause for celebration. I look forward to recommending it heartily to students and colleagues alike."--Alexander Golitzin, Patristics

"The book is beautifully produced and lavishly illustrated. Instructive and pleasing, Imago Dei repays both close reading and close viewing."--Cross Currents

"[L]ucid, crisp, inclusive, comprehensive, and articulate."--Daniel J. Sahas, History of Christianity

"Pelikan clearly delineates the path the theological defense of icons took during the iconoclastic controversies of the eighth and ninth centuries ... Commendably Pelikan addresses the role played by the other senses in the defense of icons. The fact that touch, taste, audition and smell were acceptable made it easier to argue for the place of the visual."--Theological Studies

Amazon.com Review
Odysseus took the long way home from the Trojan War--20 years of wandering and adventuring through the islands of the Aegean Sea. The story of his voyage is one of the great tales of Western civilization--but meanwhile, what about the women who loved and yearned for this handsome, crafty hero? Homer has very little to say about how these women felt about being at the mercy of Odysseus's wanderlust. To even the score, Clemence McClaren follows her award-winning Inside the Walls of Troy with a novel that offers a backstage perspective of Odysseus's life and adventures from the voices of the four women who cared most.

First, of course, is the spectacularly faithful Penelope, who was struck with love for Odysseus at first sight, and plotted to win him from her cousin, the beautiful Helen. And then there is the sensuous witch Circe, who turns men into swine and lures Odysseus to stay, only to be caught in the trap of love herself. The virgin goddess Pallas Athene watches over her favorite with fond amusement, and his ancient nurse Eurycleia grumbles and hopes through the long years, raising Odysseus's son Telemachus and helping Penelope fend off a bevy of suitors. As any woman might expect, when the hero finally does return there is emotional baggage to be cleared away before the longed-for happy ending. An extra treat for mythology buffs, especially girls, to accompany a first reading of The Odyssey, or simply to be enjoyed as an exotic love story. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell

From School Library Journal
Grade 7-9-For generations, the story of Odysseus has intrigued readers who have followed the Greek hero's journey from Ithaca to Troy and then from island to island as he attempts to return home after the Trojan War. Like many retellers before her, McClaren uses the basic tale first recounted in Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, but instead of narrating the events in the voice of Odysseus, she tells the story from the point of view of the four women who were most intimately affected. The tale begins romantically as Penelope tells of meeting, falling in love with, and marrying Odysseus. The seductress Circe, in love with the willing though homesick Odysseus, continues his story, which is then picked up by the goddess Pallas Athena. She helps him reach home where he must rid his palace of suitors who demand that Penelope marry one of them. Here, his old nursemaid, Eurycleia, continues the narration and relates the satisfying ending of this journey. By changing the narrator a number of times, McClaren adds variety and richness to this already dramatic tale, full to bursting with love, adventure, and hard questions about life. The women's voices are distinctive, and their stories broaden readers' understanding of the meaning of this timeless journey. In her fine epilogue, McClaren discusses characters, themes, and symbols, and she explains some of the underlying questions that made her tell the story in a way that addresses the concerns and interests of modern readers.

From Booklist
McLaren follows up her successful Inside the Wall of Troy with another retelling of Homer's work from female characters' viewpoints. Penelope, Circe, Athena, and Eurycleia relate events in vivid first-person narratives. Through their eyes, readers piece together the story of The Odyssey and its hero's epic qualities, with the multiple voices and rich, complex personalities of the four women becoming an integral part of the story. McLaren seems to stay true to the original work's customs and values; there are antiquated ideas of beauty, for example, and the details of food, clothing, and houses all reflect McLaren's mastery of the classic. But this is a retelling that will hook modern teens--it has the original's adventure, heroism, sex, and romance, made even more accessible by the intimate voices. An epilogue offers critical insight into the original epic. Gillian Engberg

Odysseus's Women "rock"!
By Mary Haven
As an English teacher I found this book to be very enlightning. It follows Odysseus' adventures closely. The perspective of 4 of the women in his life is very refreshing, especially since the epic poem is from his point of view. The reading level is well-placed for 8-10th grades. I intend to use it next year in my class following the reading of "The Odyssey".

An interesting take on the Odyssey
By Kitty_girl
We've all heard the story of Homer's Oddessey: Greek hero Oddysseus coming back from the Trojan wars spends 10 years fighting his way back to his home on Ithaca. This book takes that story to a whole new level.

This is the Oddessey told through the eyes of the women who knew him best. First Penelope, Oddysseus' wife tells the story of how they met and fell in love. Next Circe, the sorceress who turns men into swine recounts how she fell for the great hero. Greek goddess Athena recounts how she watches after her favorite mortal, and the story ends with the accounts of Eurycleia; Oddysseus' old nurse who has raised his son in his absence and is the first to recognize him when he comes home.

This wasn't the best mythology retelling I've ever read, but it was enough to keep me interested. It is a little more appropriate for female readers (the lack of gory battle scenes may make adventure lovers loose interest), but everyone can enjoy it. Greek society was very male-oriented and women are often neglected or overlooked in many Greek myths. Check out this new version of the Odyssey from the female point of view!
