About the Author
Harvey Gould is Professor of Physics at Clark University and Associate Editor of the "American Journal of Physics." Jan Tobochnik is the Dow Distinguished Professor of Natural Science at Kalamazoo College and Editor of the "American Journal of Physics." They are the coauthors, with Wolfgang Christian, of "An Introduction to Computer Simulation Methods: Applications to Physical Systems."

A novel approach to teaching thermodynamics

I purchased this as the Kindle Edition. Like the other reviewer, I did not buy it for a course, but rather to expand my own knowledge. The strengths of this book lie in its clear writing, and its very visual accompanying Java applications.
The content is primarily foundation and theory rather than application. When purchasing, I somehow (incorrectly) assumed that applications would be the focus. However, I was only disappointed for about ten seconds, before becoming totally fascinated by what the book really did have to offer. I have read other thermodynamics texts, and this one has simply been a pleasure.
The Java applications that are referenced are extensive, and there are many of them - twelve within the first chapter alone. In addition to the figures within the book, the applications visually show the concepts in both model and graph form, and their algorithms are discussed. This has been well worth my money and time spent reading.

This book is certainly an advanced level book

Combined with an (undergrad) professor who has a hard time explaining things with a real world approach, it was pretty much a nightmare. But, after a few more semesters and better understanding of other principals, I can see that this book is well written and appreciably technical.
That said, the entire book is free as PDF's from the author's website, located next to the simulations. If you're a student, save yourself the money and use your page allowance at school to print and bind the PDF's.

Excellent discussion of cluster expansions and phase transitions

I should begin by saying that I have not read this entire book. The parts I have read were very good though. I was struggling with understanding virials and also the Landau model of phase transitions but after reading the relevant parts of this book, I feel as if I have a much better understanding of critical phenomena than I gained from Pathria. This book is well written and as easy to follow as a book on stat mech could be without being overly simplistic. Although I did not ever use any of the programs alluded to in the problems, I like the idea of including them as most work in this field is computational in nature. The problems without associated programs were also quite illuminating.
