Wolff, creator of such visually arresting books as A Year of Beasts , illustrates a favorite poem from A Child's Garden of Verses. In her now familiar combination of strong black, block-printed line juxtaposed with vibrant watercolor, she explores the literal and emotional content of Stevenson's work. The simple jacket of this well-designed volume shows a wagon full of bright blocks, with the softly evoked watercolor outline of the block city in the background. This is closely followed by pictures of other elements named in the poem: an overstuffed sofa becomes mountains, and the carpet becomes the sea. The pages illustrating the boy's imagined city are carefully detailed, incorporating subtle references into the timeless landscapes of each spread. Ages 3-7.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1–This colorfully illustrated version of Stevenson's poem is as relevant today as when it was written for A Child's Garden of Verses in 1883. On a rainy day, a small boy constructs a city with building blocks. His imagination soars and his creation soon includes a harbor, mill, palace, and kirk (the illustrator helpfully defines the word kirk on the verso of the title page). The couch becomes a mountain range and the carpet an ocean, while a collection of toy people populate his vast domain. Done in colored pencils and gouache in rich, deep colors, the large, clear pictures have a retro feel. The boy's real and imagined towns are both blanketed by dark rain clouds that soon give way to sun and bright blue skies. Demolition appears to be as satisfying as the building process for this youngster: Now I have done with it,/down let it go!/All in a moment/the town is laid low. Having had enough quiet entertainment for one day, he runs out into the sunshine to join friends, but his imaginary world remains clear in his mind. This enduring poem will charm modern children.–Maryann H. Owen, Racine Public Library, WI

PreS. First published in Stevenson's classic collection A Child's Garden of Verses in 1883, this timeless poem about imaginative play gets its own lively picture book here, centering on a contemporary boy who uses his building blocks to make his own world. Toddlers will see themselves in clear, double-page spreads that show the boy on the carpet by the sofa, using colored blocks of different shapes and sizes to build a town by the sea. The simple rhyming words ("Great is the palace / with pillar and wall, / A sort of a tower / on the top of it all") and crisp computer graphics show how single shapes and objects can join in all kinds of scenarios. Then comes the power of knocking everything all down ("block upon block / lying scattered and free"), though the boy will always remember his town by the sea--even as he joins his friends outside in their suburban subdivision. My son loves it!
By Nan
My 5 year old loves this book & it has inspired him to try & recreate the city built of blocks in the book even using our couch as the mountain! I do wish it had more pages, and even more scenerios to recreate. But the pictures are awesome and the city the kid built was very inspiring for my son! I don't know of any other books like this with beautiful pictures of blocks. He gets the Childrens Highlights magazine and there is always one page in there with something you can build with blocks, and its one of our favorite pages too in this magazine!

A Magical Book for Kids of All Ages!
By A Customer
I love this book! By using Stevenson's poem, Ashley Wolff captures the magical moments of childhood in a way that will bring a rush of memories to adults, and instant recognition to children. Staying in bed with the flu or a cold, most children devise imaginary games to occupy their time. Future quiltmakers, carpenters and other folks, will recognize themselves in this book. A delightful romp!

Good book, beautiful pictures
By C. Larson
I really like the book but not in love with it. Our 22 month old really likes the pictures but there is something lacking in the prose.
