Last Looks, Last Books: Stevens, Plath, Lowell, Bishop, Merrill (The A. W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts), by Helen Vendler

In Last Looks, Last Books, the eminent critic Helen Vendler examines the ways in which five great modern American poets, writing their final books, try to find a style that does justice to life and death alike. With traditional religious consolations no longer available to them, these poets must invent new ways to express the crisis of death, as well as the paradoxical coexistence of a declining body and an undiminished consciousness. In The Rock, Wallace Stevens writes simultaneous narratives of winter and spring; in Ariel, Sylvia Plath sustains melodrama in cool formality; and in Day by Day, Robert Lowell subtracts from plenitude. In Geography III, Elizabeth Bishop is both caught and freed, while James Merrill, in A Scattering of Salts, creates a series of self-portraits as he dies, representing himself by such things as a Christmas tree, human tissue on a laboratory slide, and the evening/morning star. The solution for one poet will not serve for another; each must invent a bridge from an old style to a new one. Casting a last look at life as they contemplate death, these modern writers enrich the resources of lyric poetry.

Review
One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 2011

"Close reading of poems, especially for nonacademic audiences, is hard to find. This makes Helen Vendler's Last Looks, Last Books an attractive proposition. Vendler, long a tastemaker equally respected inside and outside the academy, wants to find out how her subjects 'do justice to both the looming presence of death and the unabated vitality of spirit.'"--Daisy Fried, New York Times Book Review

"[A] book that needs to be read and heeded."--Peter Brooks, New York Review of Books

"Helen Vendler is our great biographer of the poem. . . . Her lucid, plain-spoken narratives make the poem seem as engrossing as a 'life of the poet' tale."--David Gewanter, Times Higher Education

"Vendler convincingly demonstrates how this liminal moment demanded that each poet render a new style in his or her verse. By illuminating the varied and fluid poetic equilibrium between life and death in her precise, nuanced readings, Vendler shapes the reader's own last look at a major vein of American poetry."--Choice

"[A] sumptuous banquet."--John Cunningham, Rain Taxi Review of Books

"Vendler's insightful critical study is essential for lovers of these American poets. . . . Vendler makes an especially important case for Lowell . . . and thus provides readers a new means of appreciating these late poems."--Stephan Delbos, Prague Post

"Last Looks, Last Books is a valuable contribution to the understanding of the five poets' aesthetics and can thus be useful for both scholars and students as a source of new insights on these oeuvres, as well as for those interested in the interaction of death and artistic creation."--Boglárka Kiss, Hungarian Journal of English and American Studies

From the Back Cover

"Helen Vendler is one of the most lucid and incisive critics with which the art of poetry has been blessed, and this is one of her finest books--brilliant, moving, and a pleasure to read."--James Longenbach, University of Rochester

"This is an elegant, expressive, and often very poignant book. One can only admire Helen Vendler's skill in showing how these American poets confronted their own leave-taking."--Angus Fletcher, City University of New York

A gifted look at last looks
By M. Feldman
Reading these essays on Stevens, Plath, Lowell, Bishop, and Merrill is like sitting right in the classroom with a wonderful teacher. In fact, they were originally presented as lectures (the 2007 Mellon lectures at the National Gallery of Art). In them, Vendler examines the distinctive style that each of these poets developed as a response to thinking about death. She calls this "binocular vision," a vision that is able to simultaneously acknowledge the inevitability of dying and the continued vitality of imagination in the living poet.

In discussing each poet, Vendler offers a close reading of a few poems, some well-known, some less so, including Stevens's "The Plain Sense of Things," Plath's "Berck-Plage," Lowell's "Our Afterlife II," "Bishop's "One Art," and Merrill's "Christmas Tree." So fine is her understanding, so lucid her explanations, that a reader unfamiliar with a particular poem will be inspired to read it again, this time with the insight that is a gift from the best teachers. The same thing is true of the well-known poems; these essays help a reader to see them afresh.

Since some poems are quoted in full, others only in part, it would be nice to have the collected works of these writers at hand. However, it isn't necessary, although this reader was inspired enough, upon finishing Last Looks, Last Books, to add a few more volumes to the poetry shelf.

Another tour
By Richard Scott
I got this when I ordered the new Emily Dickinson review.

For any level of reader the discussions are great, opening up new vistas either in discussion of meter and construction or review of literary precedents used or known by the poet.

For one long out of the field these are great reintroductions to good and great poetry

Grade 3-6 In 1986 the space shuttle will launch Space Telescope into orbit around the Earth. It will be able to "see" dimmer objects in space than its Earthbound counterparts because it will be above the light and particulate pollution in the atmosphere. Data supplied by Space Telescope is expected to help answer questions and resolve theories pertaining to quasars, pulsars and black holes. Its longer range will enable astronomers to explore deeper into space (and consequently further into the past) and perhaps find more clues about the origin (and future) of the universe. Branley describes this exciting event fully and accurately. However, some statements, although accurate, will be confusing to children without some background in astronomy. A detailed description of Space Telescope's structure, launch and anticipated maintenance follows a discussion of Earthbound telescopes and their limitations. Illustrations and excellent diagrams are very supportive of the text. Space Telescope is expected to make unanticipated discoveries, and Space Telescope captures the special excitement of anticipated and yet undreamed of scientific discovery. Margaret M. Most tall tales are no taller than the teller. This one is taller than a tree - a great-great-grandaddy of a sycamore, just right for moving into, for settling down in and raising children and children and children.

It's a story starting way back in time about one man and something magical happening. Was it his doing? Or nature's?

With a storyteller's lilt and a folk-artist's eye, a writer and an illustrator have made something magical of an Appalachian legend.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3—As a carpenter, Harlan Burch plants two trees for every one he cuts. "Somebody else might need a tree someday was Harlan Burch's philosophy." The trees serve another purpose, however, when he realizes that, like the forest animals around him, he can make a home for himself in a hollow tree. The man lived "and lived and lived and lived and lived and lived" in a sycamore, growing younger, not older. He becomes a husband and father, passing away at the age of 142 and leaving his own family tree behind. A comfortable voice enhances the rich, rural narrative. Acrylics on cardboard and linen provide a textured canvas for Shelby's storytelling, and the palette of greens, browns, and blues emphasizes the beauty of the natural environment. Intricate quilt squares, symbolic of Appalachian culture, are integrated into each spread. Loosely based on a traditional family story, this southeastern Kentucky folktale with a gentle message provides a rhythmic read-aloud.—Meg Smith, Cumberland County Public Library, Fayetteville, NC

Tall-tale or magical legend...it's a good story
By Cheryl
The children in my classes: grades 1-6 love this story when I read it to them. What a tall-tale. I mean this old man, Harlan Burch, just goes on living and living and living. Also, when he cuts a tree down. . . he plants 2 to take its place. My students always chose this book off the shelf to read during independent reading time. This is a great story.

About the Author
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born in Frankfurt-on-Main in 1749. He studied at Leipzig, where he showed interest in the occult, and at Strassburg, where Herder introduced him to Shakespeare’s works and to folk poetry. He produced some essays and lyrical verse, and at twenty-two wrote Götz von Berlichingen, a play which brought him national fame and established him in the current Sturm und Drang movement. This was followed by the novel The Sorrows of Young Werther in 1774, which was an even greater success.

Goethe began work on Faust, and Egmont, another tragedy before being invited to join the government of Weimar. His interest in the classical world led him to leave suddenly for Italy in 1786 and the Italian Journey recounts his travels there. Iphigenia in Tauris and Torquato Tasso, classical dramas, were written at this time. Returning to Weimar, Goethe started the second part of Faust, encouraged by Schiller. In 1806 he married Christiane Vulpius. During this late period he finished his series of Wilhelm Master books and wrote many other works, including The Oriental Divan (1819). He also directed the State Theatre and worked on scientific theories in evolutionary botany, anatomy and color. Goethe completed Faust in 1832, just before he died.
W.H. Auden was born in 1907 and went to Oxford University, where he became Professor of Poetry from 1956 to 1960. After the publication of his Poems in 1930, he became the acknowledged leader of the 'thirties poets'. His poetic output was prolific, and he also wrote verse plays in collaboration with Christopher Isherwood, with whom he visited china. In 1946 he became a U.S. citizen. He died in 1973.
Elizabeth Mayer was born in Mecklengurg in 1884 and emigrated to the U.S. in 1936. In collaboration with Louise Blogan she translated Werther and Elective Affinities

Goethe's Italian Travel Journal
By Neri
Goethe went on a somewhat spontaneous (long thought about - but left with little notification to employer or relations and a surprise to himself it seemed) journey to Italy to reignite or find his passion, his muse. He never quite recaptured his creative impulse to the standard of his expecations after writing the book that shot him into international superstardom "The Sorrows of Young Werther" and he wanted to be with young artists in Italy and incognito to reignite his muse (although the forward suggests something quite different may have been responsible for igniting his muse which his journal only hints at). The success of Werther might have left an almost stiffling weight on his creativity and his journal also discusses situations where he has to get past the legacy of Werther on his creative process, just through the sheer weight what people want to talk about and identify him with. After Goethe came from his Italian journey he did go on to complete many works, or revise ones in progress, and further his artistic gifts to mankind; also completing at least one while in Italy.

Following along with the help of the internet probably made this book more interesting: getting easy access to pictures and the obscure references made to this or that. Goethe also came across some amusing people as well. Goethe's insights and observations are of course quality but it is also remarkable how normal he was and susceptible to the same sorts of sentiments and feelings, prejudices as most have. I think his notions about dolphins would have changed if he were alive now. It also takes one to a different time and place and takes one, I think, into the mind of a great genius at rest.

The 10 pages on the the relationship of Goethe's favorite Saint Filippo Neri and Pope Clement VIII is worth the price of the book.

A Journey worth taking

This is a great intro to Goethe, who here seems human, approachable, and caught up in an encounter with Italy that changed pretty much his whole worldview. Written with congenial grace, wit, and observant appreciation.

La Dolce Vita
By Daniel Myers
It is curious that, as translators W.H. Auden and Elizabeth Mayer point out in the Introduction, outside Germany, Goethe remains highly respected yet never actually read by most literary people. Studying literature during and before my undergraduate years, I was introduced to Dante in translation, to Moliere and Racine in the original French and, of course, to Shakespeare. But Goethe was barely mentioned, certainly not studied. Perhaps it is down to the difficulty of the German language. I simply don't know. I did read The Sorrows of Young Werther on my own in my youth, but remember being unimpressed. The Germans, on the other hand, have had a love affair with Shakespeare that, at times, has almost eclipsed the devotion to him in his own country. In short, I felt obliged to read this travelogue in an attempt to become better acquainted with a writer whom Germans hold in such high esteem.

And what a treat it is! Whatever Goethe's motives in making a sojourn in Italy, much debated in the Introduction, it seems certainly well worth it for him as well as for the reader. Well-nigh every chapter is drenched with the Italian sunshine and carpe diem attitudes he finds in Italy (particularly Naples) which he seldom fails to contrast with what he refers to as the dark and gloomy northern climes. As he states, almost shouts, one wants to say, in a letter written from San Luca, "I shall leave everything as it stands because first impressions, even if they are not always correct, are valuable and precious to us. Oh, if only I could send my distant friends a breath of the more carefree existence here!"

There are some few and far between rather dull moments, as will occur in any travelogue recorded in this fashion, but, for the most part the sunlit waves and piazzas of 18th Century Italy are wafted to the reader through this - as far as I can discern - very able translation.

It is beyond the scope of this review to cover everything Goethe experiences in Italy and, more particularly, Rome, where he ends up spending most of his time studying painting, architecture, anatomy and, above all, becoming immersed in Italianate culture whilst continuing to write, enlivened by the liberation he feels. Goethe himself does a better job of summing it all up than I can:

"While living this year among strangers, I have observed that all really intelligent people recognize, some in a refined, some in a gross way, that the moment is everything and that the sole privilege of a reasonable being is to behave in such a manner, in so far as the choice lies within him, that his life contains the greatest possible sum of reasonable and happy moments."

What a lovely way of reflecting upon what a climate and people have taught one!

The Clash of Gods: A Reinterpretation of Early Christian Art (Princeton Paperbacks), by Thomas F. Mathews

Between the third and sixth centuries, the ancient gods, goddesses, and heroes who had populated the imagination of humankind for a millennium were replaced by a new imagery of Christ and his saints. Thomas Mathews explores the many different, often surprising, artistic images and religious interpretations of Christ during this period. He challenges the accepted theory of the "Emperor Mystique," which, interpreting Christ as king, derives the vocabulary of Christian art from the propagandistic imagery of the Roman emperor. This revised edition contains a new preface by the author and a new chapter on the origin and development of icons in private domestic cult.

Review
"This is a sumptuously illustrated book, in which the pictures are well married to the text. It makes an illuminating way into patristic theology and the religions of the first six centuries."--Leslie Holden, Theology

"Mathews's argument is convincing. In his determination to challenge and overturn a long-held theory, he does not allow his chameleon Christ, who is both man and woman, magician and god, any role as Christ the king. The pendulum may swing back, but not on the same course again. This book has cleared the way for new understandings of the iconography of Christ. It should stimulate a reconsideration of stereotyped readings of other images and in other periods."--Ann Moffatt, Parergon

From the Back Cover

"This book presents an up-to-date and original survey of Early Christian art and its origins, and attacks the current idea of continuity between the Roman emperor cult and the art of the early church. Conservative readers may well be shocked by this lucid but utterly unconventional presentation of an often treated subject. I find Thomas Mathews's work convincing and impressive."--Hugo Buchthal

"Not only does Mathews present bold arguments that I find persuasive, but his book is exciting to read. He removes the images of Christ from the iconography of the emperor and puts them into the far more plausible context of late antique teachers and wonder-workers."--G. W. Bowersock

About the Author

Refutes a long-dead theory of derivation from political emperor-art
By Michael Hoffman
Mathews is primarily concerned to refute a particular early 20th-Century German and Eastern European ideological theory that the portrayal of Jesus in art was derived directly from the detailed portrayal of Roman emperors in art and that this artistic portrayal of Jesus as emperor legitimates imperial political structure, with an emperor, in the contemporary era (of 1920-1950).

Mathews shows that the early artistic portrayal of Jesus presented him as a counter-Jupiter and all-ruler (pantokrator), not as a worldly emperor (kosmocrator). Jesus was also portrayed in early Christian art as androgynous and as the most powerful magician, and as a philosopher. The portrayal of Jesus in art consciously and deliberately presented him as anti-emperor.

Sometimes Mathews confusingly asserts that the way Jesus was portrayed had absolutely nothing to do with the emperor, but in other chapters, originally published as separate articles, he asserts that Jesus was portrayed consciously and deliberately as a non-emperor. Mathews' extremist manner of expression and apparent self-contradiction reveals his succumbing to political fear of 20th-Century re-institution of emperors, resulting in a polemical mode of expression, which lacks precision. Mathews' overweening concern to refute an early 20th-Century political theory causes him to misstate or inconsistently describe his theory about how Jesus was portrayed and what the portrayals meant in the first few centuries.

He ought to strike most of his invective against the very specific, quirky, and particular early 20th-century theory of artistic derivation that he confusingly labels with the ambiguous term "the emperor mystique", and instead explain consistently his positive position about how the Jesus figure did relate to or refute the figure of the emperor -- and, more to the point, how the Christ religion overall was artistically portrayed in relation to how the Roman imperial system of Pax Romana was artistically portrayed.

Mathews ought to engage with the latest theories of Roman imperial theology/ideology, starting with the work of S.R.F. Price, and contribute directly to that effort, rather than devoting so much coverage to a particular 1930s-era view. That's the hardest aspect of reading this book: today's reader comes to it expecting commentary on Price and Horsley, but instead, finds a concern that seems to affirm most of Price and Horsley while being positioned as somehow "against the Emperor Mystique".

This book is dissonant and confusing polemics until you figure out how to harmonize it with the sensible views of Price and Horsley. By the phrase 'the Emperor Mystique', Mathews doesn't have Price and Horsley's view in mind as one naturally expects these days, but rather, a particular quirky, specific theory of artistic-elements derivation of Jesus' portrayal, a theory that was in service of 20th-Century pro-emperor politics.

No scholars are currently asserting that the artistic portrayal of Jesus is directly derived from the portrayal of emperors in their "purely political" function. Rather, what Price, Horsley, and N.T. Wright are stressing these days is that the New Testament books were highly intent on presenting a rebuttal and sociopolitical alternative to the religiously legitimated political ideology and imperial theology of Pax Romana and Roman imperial Ruler Cult -- a view that is supported by Mathews' Christ Pantokrator (almighty all-ruler), magician, and personally caring philosopher.

The book presents a somewhat useful picture of Jesus as philosopher, counter-Jupiter, and healer-magician, but unfortunately that clarification is tangled up with confusing polemics in a self-contradictory, overheated manner of expression, all the more confusing because you get that battle (tilting against a long-dead windmill of 1930s German politics) where you expect instead an engagement with more recent scholarship clarifying the relationship of Christianity and the late-antique Roman empire.

As a rebuttal to the particular artistic-derivation theory of Grabar, the book succeeds, but it doesn't engage with the more general, recent, systematic studies of Christianity as rebuttal and alternative to the system of the Roman empire.

Mathews explains clearly why Christanity won over Antiquity.
By A Customer
This is a bold and clear reinterpretation of Early Christian Art. It moves the reader through a cany reseeing that respects and illuminates both the message and the people who received it. Mathews explains in an open and well documented way how Christian images fought and defeated the pagan gods. As an art historian trained with the rather confusing cannon of earlier scholarship I found it delightful reading.

A necessary tool for the understanding of early christianity
By George A Sherman
While Mathews has crafted an thorough polemic against what he calls the "Emperor Mystique" prevalent as a key hermenuetic of early christian art, he stimulated me to go beyond the declared intent of his thoughtful book. The author opens the door to the polyvalence of the symbolism of the art of the church, particularly from the third through the sixth centuries. Mathews presents the adaptation of Greco-Roman art forms and their translation into the competitive contexts of christian origins. While I was persuaded that Alfoldi and Grabar probably went too far in their attempt to link the art of the church with an exclusively imperial model, I still believe that many christians would have recognized elements of this model in viewing the paintings and mosaics of the church. Religious symbolism can function in multiple ways, both singly and in combinations depending on various religious, political, social, and economic agenda. This book is a useful complement to Averil Cameron's "Christianity and the Rhetoric of Empire."

Knowing Full Well (Soochow University Lectures in Philosophy), by Ernest Sosa

In this book, Ernest Sosa explains the nature of knowledge through an approach originated by him years ago, known as virtue epistemology. Here he provides the first comprehensive account of his views on epistemic normativity as a form of performance normativity on two levels. On a first level is found the normativity of the apt performance, whose success manifests the performer's competence. On a higher level is found the normativity of the meta-apt performance, which manifests not necessarily first-order skill or competence but rather the reflective good judgment required for proper risk assessment. Sosa develops this bi-level account in multiple ways, by applying it to issues much disputed in recent epistemology: epistemic agency, how knowledge is normatively related to action, the knowledge norm of assertion, and the Meno problem as to how knowledge exceeds merely true belief. A full chapter is devoted to how experience should be understood if it is to figure in the epistemic competence that must be manifest in the truth of any belief apt enough to constitute knowledge. Another takes up the epistemology of testimony from the performance-theoretic perspective. Two other chapters are dedicated to comparisons with ostensibly rival views, such as classical internalist foundationalism, a knowledge-first view, and attributor contextualism. The book concludes with a defense of the epistemic circularity inherent in meta-aptness and thereby in the full aptness of knowing full well.

And Now, For Something Completely Different...
By Ryan J. Ortega
I am sorry, but Sosa, who, by the by, has never, despite Princeton labeling this 'The long awaited first monograph from a leading Epistemologist [,] authored a book. Your statement that he has, 'for years' been writing books on the theory of knowledge is simply inaccurate. Dr. Sosa has edited volumes, has edited Journals, and has authored well over 200 Articles, though his books are transcribed Lectures (such as the subtitle of this particular text indicates), perhaps most notably the John Locke Lectures at Oxford, of which their Press issued 2 Volumes on Dr. Sosa's original thesis of Virtue Epistemology. His 1991 collection of essays (Knowledge in Perspective: Selected Essays in Epistemology, Cambridge University Press) is one of the most valuable texts in this sib-field of Philosophy, as it lays out the foundation for both the J. Locke Lectures and the text now under discussion.
I mean no disrespect, though I am curious as to why your Review is a further lionization of Karl Popper's theories of knowledge and not a recitation of your thoughts on Sosa's present text.
It is saddening that those who are not familiar with Dr. Sosa's work will see a single, 1-star Review of his rather fine work.
I wonder, do you find Professor Sosa's earlier Articles and Cambridge publication to be of value? or does that edition suffer from not being an intellectual biography of Karl Popper? By the by, Popper himself wrote his own autobiography, one that I read and enjoyed, and one where he laid out his own ideas. Beyond that text, he wrote others that expounded on his theories of confirmation. I just find myself a bit confused as to why you are upset that, in this slim work, Dr. Sosa did not refer to Popper's theories, theories which, on the whole, and particularly in the context of these Lectures, do not really have much of a place, as the ideas of both these great Philosophers differ in approach.

With Respect

A very strange situation
By Rafe Champion
This is a very strange situation. The author has been writing books about knowledge and epistemology for years without ever apparently engaging with the most important and innovative epistemologist and philosopher of science in modern times, namely Karl Popper.

It is all very well to address issues like the justification of belief but to persist in that quest (which appears to be making very little progress) without even acknowledging that Popper has provided an alternative approach is very lazy scholarshp and does no good for the students who are supposed to be put in touch with the best that has been thought and written in the field.

In the face of the logical positivists, the logical empiricists and others, Popper has taken four "turns" to advance the study of knowledge and its growth. First the conjectural or hermeneutic turn, to insist on the inevitably conjectural nature of even our best scientific knowledge. Second the objective turn, from beliefs to public, inter-subjective knowledge of which the most refined form is found in science. Taken together, these turns replace the quest for justified belief with the aim of forming critical preferences for one theory rather than another.

Third is the social turn to take account of the context and especially the "rules of the game" or the conventions of learning, which can of course be criticized and improved. That is a turn that Wittgenstein took but without engaging with scientific and political issues in the way that Popper proceeded.

Fourth was the revival of metaphysics in the heart of the scientific enterprise, not entirely original but very much in defiance of the positivists and empiricists who were his major sparring partners. His theory of metaphysical research programs had an early release in the form of the Lakatosian methodology of scientific research programs but that was a degenerative version because Lakatos eliminated the essential element of criticism of the metaphysical core of the program.

Popper's program, from Logic der Forschung (1935) through The Open Society and its Enemies (1945), Conjectures and Refutations (1963) and Objective Knowledge (1972) to Realism and the Aim of Science (1983) cannot be ignored in any study of epistemology that claims to be fully informed and progressive.

Jung contra Freud: The 1912 New York Lectures on the Theory of Psychoanalysis (Bollingen Series (General)), by C. G. Jung

In the autumn of 1912, C. G. Jung, then president of the International Psychoanalytic Association, set out his critique and reformulation of the theory of psychoanalysis in a series of lectures in New York, ideas that were to prove unacceptable to Freud, thus creating a schism in the Freudian school. Jung challenged Freud's understandings of sexuality, the origins of neuroses, dream interpretation, and the unconscious, and Jung also became the first to argue that every analyst should themselves be analyzed. Seen in the light of the subsequent reception and development of psychoanalysis, Jung's critiques appear to be strikingly prescient, while also laying the basis for his own school of analytical psychology.

This volume of Jung's lectures includes an introduction by Sonu Shamdasani, Philemon Professor of Jung History at University College London, and editor of Jung's Red Book.

good but....
By cyberalchemist
These lectures are worth reading. They indicate that Jung was not going to take Freud's 'traditional' view of the war between flesh and spirit, and was to see the unconscious as potentially transformative rather than simply a garbage heap. However if you have volume 4 of the collected works of Jung you already have these writings. It would have been nice for the publisher to state this in the book description. The only new thing is the introduction.

pre-jung jung, good for student of freud or jung or psychoanalysis or whatever
By L
In many ways this is a more toned-down Freudianism that's easier to swallow, more optimistic, and more heavily mythological. Barely Jung at all, just yet, really. Overall, his inclination to view the Oedipus Complex as more metaphorical and his view of the libido as general psychic energy rather than sexual energy are probably the most significant modifications of orthodox Freudianism here, and each is temptingly easier to accept — but maybe that easiness is precisely contrary to the point of psycho-analysis? Notable in this book is Jung's comparatively (to Freud) optimistic views regarding morality and civilization: he views morality as a basic, individual need, which if not satisfied itself gives rise to substitutive satisfactions; this is in many ways opposed to Freud's famous theory in "Civilization and its Discontents," written in 1930. It is also very interesting - if, again, suspiciously comforting - and either way worth thinking about. The ninth lecture in this book is a rather interesting case study; and the whole book is rather good and well-written, etc. Jung seems a bit more naïve and has a much worse historical sense even than Freud, to be sure. But overall, as a Freud fan and Jung skeptic, I was pleasantly surprised.

Birds of New Guinea, by Bruce M. Beehler, Thane K. Pratt, Dale A. Zimmerman

This book is the first definitive ornithological field guide to New Guinea, the world's second largest island and one of the richest tropical environments in the Old World. Because of its isolation, New Guinea's biota includes spectacular radiations of unusual plants and animals (of which the birds of paradise are perhaps best known). The region has long attracted naturalists, ecologists, and anthropologists. This book treats all of the more than 700 species of birds recorded from the region, illustrating more than 600 of them in forty-seven fine color plates and eight black-and-white halftone plates. The text contains species accounts treating identification, distribution, ecology, vocalizations, and behavior. This is preceded by a detailed introduction to the region, with sections on climate, biogeography, rainforest ecology, and conservation.

A chief contribution of the book is the wealth of information on the habits of many of the region's little-known species. Included is an ornithological gazetteer, along with four maps showing natural features and important ornithological localities.

Birds of New Guinea review
By Andrew Baur
A helpful introduction to the birds of New Guinea for anyone from the beginning bird watcher to experienced ornithologist. It is useful for identification of and differentiation between birds, and for basic information about the known habits of the birds. Good as a starting point for those who wish to study further.

A definitive field guide to the birds of NG
By Debby Ng
What i appreciate most abt this book is tt it's chock full of information. from an introduction to papuan geography to taxonomy, as well as intros into racial variation of the very diverse groups of birds in NG. The book also delves into the country's natural history, environment and even island biogeography.
another thing i appreciate is the significant introduction given to each family of birds before the species' details list. such info allows the birder to understand how better to expect, spot and identify these birds in the field.
contact information also provided for those interested in visiting the country. followed by a range of tips on how to best to identify birds in the Papuan terrain. the author even goes so far as to give mention of the significance of birds in Papuan culture and life, which is a graet insight, little expected in a field guide.
lastly, of course, the slates are wonderfully coloured, otherwise in black and white (but don't worry, of course the colouration is mentioned in the description) - i suppose to cut costs (this book is expensive) - but an indespensible edition to a complete guide to birds of the indonesian archipelago.

Don't go to New Guinea without this book!
By H. Laughlin
I just returned from 2 weeks in Papua New Guinea where the only comprehensive bird field guide was the Beehler book, which one of the travelers had checked out from their local library. Even the naturalist, who led the trip, had another book that wasn't nearly as good. We could not have identified as many birds without this valuable resource. A new edition is coming out in April 2008, but until then, the 1986 edition is the best there is.
