an extraordinary tale of bugs and battles
By mary
This is a fascinating account of the impact that disease has had on the history of the human race, strongly recommended for anyone who has ever wondered about the interplay between pestilence, famine and war. The authors, an historian and a doctor, use their joint skills to show how Man's ambitions have long been thwarted by outbreaks of deadly illnesses, bacterial, viral, genetic and others. The book shows, for example, how Napoleon's invasion of Russia failed after his armies were decimated by typhus, how cholera and scurvy contributed to the disasters of the Crimean War, and the role of Queen Victoria's haemophiliac gene behind the Russian Revolution. It is an extraordinary tale.

interesting, but a chore to read
By D. K. Stokes
Ah, the power of preventive medicine. Somewhere in this book, and I wish I'd put a sticky note in so I could post the exact quote, it states that in wartime, disease is more deadly to soldiers than battle. Which was the entire reason for my specialty when I was in the army (preventive medicine specialist). Which, in turn, is why I bought this book years and years ago. I'd just never actually sat down and read the whole thing until now.

Disease and History is a little more wide-ranging than just the history of disease in a military setting--it shows how disease has changed the course of history, from epidemics that killed thousands to how disease affecting an individual ruler or ruling family caused changes in how, or sometimes whether, they ruled.

However, it's a real chore to slog through reading.

The first couple of chapters are the most interesting, the ones about the Black Death and other epidemics, and I found the chapter on Napoleon just fascinating.

But the writing itself is painful to read--it's written like a freshman research paper. Lots of telling the reader what you're going to tell them. Then there are the tangents. A section will be about a particular disease, but it'll meander off into a long-winded discussion of something else and never end up tying the two together, or making a conclusion about it.

That's particularly evident in the later chapters--a discussion of hemophilia and the fall of the Russian monarchy gets completely derailed, and the chapter on mass suggestion is just a mess of unrelated stuff that if I were cynical, I'd suspect was added to cash in on the Princess Di fever.

The final chapter, about modern life, is a bit dated--understandably so, since the book was first written in 1972, so it's a historical look at the subject in itself. It's a combination of interesting facts and the author's political and generational biases.

Even though Disease and History has a lot of flaws, I very much enjoyed parts of it, and found the subject matter intriguing enough to plan on seeking out other books on the subject.

colonisations of other countries and other aspects of history was easy to understand and informative
By Mayfield
An interesting book explaining disease and epidemics over the ages. How they affected wars, colonisations of other countries and other aspects of history was easy to understand and informative. A little dry in places but a book to dip in and out of for information.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6–Brilliantly colored artwork and text based on the King James version of the Bible tell the story of the life of Jesus, beginning with the prophesies and the annunciation and ending with his ascension into Heaven. Demi's paintings are full of bright, intricate patterns, and bold touches of gold produce a feeling of awe and splendor. The images are somewhat traditional in their depictions of winged angels and a white-haired God figure above the frame of several illustrations. This book is a beautiful creation, and a reverent tribute. However, it does not have a lot of appeal for children. The art, all enclosed in a series of frames, looks static and self-contained. The small size of the text makes it difficult to read. The biblical passages have an undeniable beauty, but no adjustments or simplifications have been made to make the language more accessible to a young audience. This volume will be a source of inspiration for readers already familiar with the story of Jesus. To introduce the topic to children, consider Sally Grindley's The Life of Jesus (DK, 2003) or Brian Wildsmith's Jesus (Eerdmans, 2004).–Lucinda Snyder Whitehurst, St. Christopher's School, Richmond, VA

From Booklist
Gr. 3-5. Demi has used her considerable artistic talents in books about many great religious figures. Now, she turns her attention to Jesus, using as her text pieces from the four gospels, and lacing them into a touching narrative of life, death, and resurrection. Anyone familiar with children's books will immediately recognize Demi's style. All of the hallmarks of her art are here: striking design, diminutive figures, jewel-tone colors, intricate borders, and brilliant streaks of gold signifying holiness. Jesus is something of a disappointment--a blond, wispy Lord, whose strength comes from the golden rays that surround him and are emitted from him. But the scenes, each a small play of its own, are thoughtful and often moving. The text does not use the exact language of the King James Version of the New Testament, but the simplified presentation adds to the child appeal. Using the most vivid sections from the different gospels, Demi creates a brisk yet profound rendition of the greatest story ever told. Ilene Cooper

Beautiful Illustrations Accent Passages From the King James Version of the Bible
By Lynn Ellingwood
This book is beautiful. It tells the story of Jesus based on the King James Version of the Bible. I would have preferred some easier language so I could read it to children or children could read it at a younger age. Alas, this is difficult to read due to the language but for what it's worth, it is a beautifully done version. I was just looking for something a bit easier for kids to relate to.

Not something for your kids.
By A Reader
As usual there are the lovely Demi illustrations, but not much thought and effort was put into planning the text (once again!). This book is much too wordy, and used language too complicated and boring to connect with children. I do believe the audience for the book was supposed to be children, but I find this book cumbersome, and I may never really read it very often to my kids. You are better off with a children's bible.

Spiritual Interrogations, by Katherine Clay Bassard

The late eighteenth century witnessed an influx of black women to the slave-trading ports of the American Northeast. The formation of an early African American community, bound together by shared experiences and spiritual values, owed much to these women's voices. The significance of their writings would be profound for all African Americans' sense of their own identity as a people.

Katherine Clay Bassard's book is the first detailed account of pre-Emancipation writings from the period of 1760 to 1863, in light of a developing African American religious culture and emerging free black communities. Her study--which examines the relationship among race, culture, and community--focuses on four women: the poet Phillis Wheatley and poet and essayist Ann Plato, both Congregationalists; and the itinerant preacher Jarena Lee, and Shaker eldress Rebecca Cox Jackson, who, with Lee, had connections with African Methodism.

Together, these women drew on what Bassard calls a "spirituals matrix," which transformed existing literary genres to accommodate the spiritual music and sacred rituals tied to the African diaspora. Bassard's important illumination of these writers resurrects their path-breaking work. They were cocreators, with all black women who followed, of African American intellectual life.

Available Light: Anthropological Reflections on Philosophical Topics., by Clifford Geertz

Clifford Geertz, one of the most influential thinkers of our time, here discusses some of the most urgent issues facing intellectuals today. In this collection of personal and revealing essays, he explores the nature of his anthropological work in relation to a broader public, serving as the foremost spokesperson of his generation of scholars, those who came of age after World War II. His reflections are written in a style that both entertains and disconcerts, as they engage us in topics ranging from moral relativism to the relationship between cultural and psychological differences, from the diversity and tension among activist faiths to "ethnic conflict" in today's politics.

Geertz, who once considered a career in philosophy, begins by explaining how he got swept into the revolutionary movement of symbolic anthropology. At that point, his work began to encompass not only the ethnography of groups in Southeast Asia and North Africa, but also the study of how meaning is made in all cultures--or, to use his phrase, to explore the "frames of meaning" in which people everywhere live out their lives. His philosophical orientation helped him to establish the role of anthropology within broader intellectual circles and led him to address the work of such leading thinkers as Charles Taylor, Thomas Kuhn, William James, and Jerome Bruner. In this volume, Geertz comments on their work as he explores questions in political philosophy, psychology, and religion that have intrigued him throughout his career but that now hold particular relevance in light of postmodernist thinking and multiculturalism. Available Light offers insightful discussions of concepts such as nation, identity, country, and self, with a reminder that like symbols in general, their meanings are not categorically fixed but grow and change through time and place.

This book treats the reader to an analysis of the American intellectual climate by someone who did much to shape it. One can read Available Light both for its revelation of public culture in its dynamic, evolving forms and for the story it tells about the remarkable adventures of an innovator during the "golden years" of American academia.

From Publishers Weekly
In cadenced prose, noted anthropologist Geertz examines his own life, education and work and the ways in which the fields of anthropology and philosophy might benefit each other, in a collection of essays reprinted from such journals as the Antioch Review and Common Knowledge. His recollections of the intellectual excitement in post-War World II colleges, filled with people on the brink of a new life and paid for by the G.I. Bill, reveal an intriguing facet of American intellectual history as well as the author's roots as an anthropologist. His now-famous fieldwork in Java in 1952 becomes a point of departure for other intellectual explorations. Geertz can be quite provocative--in discussing the ethical dimensions of anthropology, he concludes that "thought is conduct and is to be morally judged as such." He is also exacting, as when he claims that "anthropologists will simply have to make something of subtler differences, and their writing will grow more shrewd." His most challenging arguments for contemporary thinkers come at the end, when he discusses the impact of postmodernism on various disciplines and whether cohesive identities are possible in our world. Carefully teasing out how the study of cultural "differences" and "similarities" can work--"the trick is to get them to illuminate one another"--Geertz once again makes an important contribution to how we think and live in the world today. (May)

From Library Journal
In retrospect, the period following the end of World War II can be identified as the heyday of cultural anthropology. Geertz (Inst. of Advanced Studies) entered the discipline just as it was beginning to flourish. In his distinguished career, he has been prominent in developing some of its most important projects, including symbolic/interpretive anthropology, ecological anthropology, and the study of newly independent nations in the developing world. With these essays, addresses, and reviews, he updates us on his thoughts on cultural interpretation, the nature of political entities, and trends in various academic disciplines. As the subtitle promises, he philosophizes on the nature of anthropology and its possible relevance today. The book assumes some knowledge of contemporary academic trends, and its reviews of recent debates in the field are neither comprehensive nor satisfying. However, it reflects an eminent scholar's mature insights into the state of anthropology after it has lost much of its former prestige; realistically, Geertz holds out no optimism for its future as a profession. Several strong essays make this an essential addition to academic and many public libraries.

Review
"Available Light reflects an eminent scholar's mature insights into the state of anthropology after it has lost much of its former prestige. . ."--Library Journal

"An important contribution to how we think and live in the world today."--Publishers Weekly

"This is a provocative look at the human race (and the study thereof) by a man who has seen more of it than most."--Kirkus Reviews

"The essays and personal history contained in Available Light distill the continuing vitality, honesty, and acumen of an intellectual. . . [Geertz's] clarity, humor, and insight never give way to the flattened tone of pedagogue."--Paul-Jonathan Benson, The Boston Book Review

"Mr. Geertz's most recent collection of papers and lectures . . . makes the peculiarities of his profession still more pronounced. What, he asks, is anthropology really about? . . . Isn't the anthropologist doomed to misinterpret another culture? Is any universal judgement possible? . . . So the anthropologist stands at a troubled crossroads. . . . In one direction is the world of culture, diverse and unimaginably complex; in the other is the world of nature, immutable and universal."--Edward Rothstein, New York Times

"Lucid, provocative and playful. . . . The book is impeccably written--droll, animated, and bright in both senses of the word--and should enlighten lay readers as well as specialists."--Lionel Shriver, The Guardian

"Available Light is deeply moving."--T.M. Luhrmann, Times Literary Supplement

"Anthropology has never been so central or so widely read within the academy; and anthropologists have never been so insecure. In this context of moral insecurity, Available Light is deeply moving."--T. M. Luhrmann, Times Literary Supplement

"I am a fan of Geertz because he is one of the world's most effective proponents of cultural, moral, and scientific pluralism. . . . His new book . . . is a welcome, predictably fascinating, and very elucidative exposition of Geertz's brand of pluralism. . . . Gripping."--Richard A. Shweder, Science

Interdisciplinary Pursuits
By Etienne RP
To engage in a meaningful dialogue with another discipline, and to reap the benefits of interdisciplinary work, it is essential to keep a firm grounding in the research tradition and scientific methods of one particular area of study. In Available Lights, Clifford Geertz often crosses boundaries and demonstrates an amazing command of other fields of research. His Anthropological Reflexions not only cover philosophical topics, but also address other disciplines such as psychology, political science, history, epistemology, and the natural sciences. But Clifford Geertz is a scholar who is quite secure about his disciplinary identity: "I am an ethnographer, and a writer about ethnography, from beginning to end; and I don't do systems."

Although the nature of anthropology is hard to pinpoint (it has to do with identity and difference, or with "how much difference difference makes"), Geertz is convinced that ethnographic fieldwork remains at the core of the discipline: field research is what anthropologists do that others don't. To discover who people think they are, what they think they are doing, and to what end they think they are doing it, it is necessary to gain a working familiarity with the frames of meaning within which they enact their lives. Recent attempts to reinvent the discipline by discarding fieldwork as an outdated ideology are met with skepticism: "There is very little in what the partisans of an anthropology in which fieldwork plays a much reduced or transformed role (...) have so far done that would suggest they represent the wave of the future." Therefore "deep hanging out", James Clifford's disparaging expression for fieldwork, is to be preferred to "nonimmersive, hit-and-run ethnography".

By staying close to the field, the ethnographer avoids a common pitfall: the attempt to "do systems", what the author labels "the-buck-stops-there approaches to social theory " or the "'it all comes down to' cast of mind". As he notes, there are very few laws or general rules in anthropology that aren't either false or trivial. At best, generalities are useful as heuristic devices, indicating the direction in which to probe deeper. Claude Levi-Strauss is a well-known example of an anthropologist who attempted to draw universal laws and general structures from his observations in the field, but Geertz disagrees with him on many points, epistemological as well as ethical. For Geertz, the renunciation of the authority that comes from "views from nowhere" ('I've seen reality and it's real') is not a loss, it's a gain. Direct and open acknowledgment of limits--this observer, in this time, at that place--is one of the things that most recommends this whole style of doing research.

But fieldwork poses many problems. First, as the author wryly notes, "we may be faced with a world in which there simply aren't any more headhunters, matrilinealists, or people who predict the weather from the entrails of a pig. Difference will doubtless remain--the French will never eat salted butter. But the good old days of widow burning and cannibalism are gone forever." Second, negotiating access to the field and establishing a meaningful relationship with a group of informants are no easy tasks. The relationship between an anthropologist and an informant rests on a set of partial fictions only half seen-through. For Geertz, "one of the psychological fringe benefits of anthropological research--at least I think it's a benefit--is that it teaches you how it feels to be thought of as a fool and used as an object, and how to endure it." Moral dilemmas abound, not least about how to cope with "a division of humanity into those who know and decide and those who are known and are decided for". This makes anthropology a moral discipline, in which "the results of thought inevitably reflect the quality of the kind of human situation in which they were obtained".

For an intellectual who confesses to be "shy of polemic", Clifford Geertz demonstrates an acute spirit and a sharp wit in discussing the work of researchers with whom he apparently disagrees: James Clifford's "hit-and-run ethnography", Claude Levi-Strauss' metaphor of cultures as intersecting trains peeking briefly into one another, critics who see in relativism an attack on "reason, freedom, footnotes, and civilization", or evolutionary biology's pretension to hegemony. But he also gives generous credit to scholars with whom he agrees, and he is ready to call his own self into question. For a septuagenarian, he is remarkably aware of the new challenges facing the discipline: the multipolar world and the redefinition of national or cultural identities, the new varieties of religious experience in the islamic world, the interactions between culture, mind, and the brain in explaining human behavior.

Clifford Geertz's prose is a model of the genre. His vocabulary is rich and evocative, his tone witty and humorous, his culture spans literary genres and historical periods. His review of Thomas Kuhn's Structure of Scientific Revolutions sets the standard for any aspiring book reviewer. As in his other essays, long list of poets make cursory appearances, from Robert Frost to Richard Wilbur, from Gerard Hopkins to Constantine Cavafy, but Clifford Geertz himself could be added to this list of literary masters.

Geertz at his best, Available Light
By Rod B
Any student of culture in the "social studies" sense who has picked up a new book and found inside a "kindred spirit," as I did 40 years ago with Albert Camus and, more recently, with Clifford Geertz, has a treat in store with Geertz' most recent, perhaps last, offering: Available Light: Anthropological Reflections on Philosophical Topics (Princeton UP, 2000).
Right from the Preface, this flight is "Go for orbit." While seemingly bidding farewell to us, and this "vast inelegance" (attributed by Geertz to Stevens), Geertz lifts one's thoughts to uncommon heights using broad, galloping strokes in particular detail, kept on track with parenthetical interjections, self-depricating personal and professional reminders, and living proofs that long sentences need not be incomprehensible.
Although it is hard to know whether Available Light would have had the same impact, had I not spent the last two years updating my 1960s cultural anthropology education, I believe it would have helped to read it first, rather than last, before reading Interpretation of Cultures, Local Knowledge, Works & Lives, and After the Fact, as well as many non-Geertz offerings.
Had Available Light come to hand before I read 3 interesting, helpful, but turgid, volumes on ethnographic field work and methodology, in preparation for a retirement project I'm planning, I would surely have struggled less with any of the three. With 3 fundamental field work questions in a single sentence, Geertz made it all clear, the remainder being mostly "techniques" which those 3 books richly supplied. Where were you, Clifford, when I needed you?
Even more, had Available Light come to hand earlier in my self-tutorial sojourn, I would surely have struggled less with such basic concepts as "culture," "religion," and "semiotics." We who lay no great claim to extraordinary intellectual prowess can use Geertz' succinct definitional descriptions to collect, organize and parse the cacophony of competing definitions, perspectives, and outright agendas surrounding each such key anthropological concept.
Finally, the writing! You will rarely find such clear, lucid writing. It is a trait, I find, not unique to Geertz, but Geertz does it better than most. It is not simple writing - on the contrary! - but clear; few short sentences, as precision so often requires modulating interjection. Available Light could find valuable use by English and journalism students just for study of writing clarity!
If I have a gripe, it's only shared by Geertz with so many Harvard-trained so-called scholars, a propensity for uncommon vocabulary - not big words, mind you, but such uncommon ones that I, schooled so many decades ago, still race for the dictionary (where, incidentally, many do not occur). My working vocabulary is enormous, so I suspect "airs" when I encounter too many unknown words, even when they turn out to be well-suited to their context, and particularly when there is an equally-suitable, better-known synonym available.
One rejoinder: Early in Available Light, Geertz notes, he has not actually taught in many years. On the contrary, Professor Geertz, on the contrary! (Rod Borlase)

Dante's Vision and the Circle of Knowledge (Princeton Legacy Library), by Giuseppe Mazzotta

In a masterly synthesis of historical and literary analysis, Giuseppe Mazzotta shows how medieval knowledge systems--the cycle of the liberal arts, ethics, politics, and theology--interacted with poetry and elevated the Divine Comedy to a central position in shaping all other forms of discursive knowledge. To trace the circle of Dante's intellectual concerns, Mazzotta examines the structure and aims of medieval encyclopedias, especially in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries; the medieval classification of knowledge; the battle of the arts; the role of the imagination; the tension between knowledge and vision; and Dante's theological speculations in his constitution of what Mazzotta calls aesthetic, ludic theology. As a poet, Dante puts himself at the center of intellectual debates of his time and radically redefines their configuration. In this book, Mazzotta offers powerful new readings of a poet who stands amid his culture's crisis and fragmentation, one who responds to and counters them in his work. In a critical gesture that enacts Dante's own insight, Mazzotta's practice is also a fresh contribution to the theoretical literary debates of the present.

Review

One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 1993

"Mazzotta's path-breaking alignment of medieval encyclopedias with Dante's poem sets new trends for Dante scholarship while silencing the debate between formalists and non-formalists which has directed Dante scholarship since the turn of the century. The book also offers startling new directions for medieval studies in general."--Brenda Deen Schildgen, Modern Language Notes

One-Eye! Two-Eyes! Three-Eyes!: A Very Grimm Fairy Tale, by Aaron Shepard

Once there were three sisters who lived together in a cottage in the woods. The oldest sister was no different from other people. She had just one eye, right in the middle of her forehead. The middle sister was also quite ordinary. She had one eye on her forehead, and one on each side of her face. But the youngest sister was different. Her name was Two-Eyes, and that's just what she had. In this playful retelling of a tale from the Brothers Grimm, a young lady with cruel sisters gets help from an old woman, a handsome knight, and some magical verses -- and in the end finds out she is not so alone as she believed. Rated "A" by Entertainment Weekly2007 New York Public Library's "100 Titles for Reading and Sharing" TEACHERS AND LIBRARIANS -- A READER'S THEATER SCRIPT OF THIS BOOK IS AVAILABLE FREE ON AARON'S WEB SITE. ///////////////////////////////////////////////// Aaron Shepard is the award-winning author of "The Legend of Lightning Larry," "The Adventures of Mouse Deer," "The Sea King's Daughter," "The Baker's Dozen," and many more kids' books. One morning, when she'd had hardly anything to eat, she sat in the grass and cried her two eyes out. All at once, an old woman stood before her. But the biggest surprise was that this woman had two eyes, just like Two-Eyes herself. "What's wrong, my dear?" asked the woman. "It's my sisters," Two-Eyes told her. "They never give me enough to eat." "Don't worry about that!" said the woman. "You can have as much as you like. Just say to your goat,     'Bleat, goat, bleat.    And bring me lots to eat!' Then you'll have plenty. When you don't want any more, just say,     'Bleat, goat, bleat.    I've had so much to eat!' Then the rest will vanish. Just like this." And the old woman vanished -- just like that.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3—In the Grimm folktale, little Two-Eyes is despised by her family because she is common and sees as ordinary humans do. In Shepard's retelling, sisters One-Eye and Three-Eyes mistreat their youngest sibling because, having seen no one else, they believe her to be "different." Two-Eyes goes off to tend the goat, weeping because she's hungry. A fairy appears and tells her a magic spell that makes the goat provide food. In Grimm, as in Eric Kimmel's One Eye, Two Eyes, Three Eyes (Holiday House, 1996), the goat is butchered after the sisters discover Two-Eyes's good fortune, whereas Shepard has them simply chasing the animal away. Instead of the fairy telling the girl to plant the goat's entrails, Shepard has her planting an ordinary seed. A tree with golden apples grows, and, because only Two-Eyes can pluck the fruit, she eventually marries the prince who asks for an apple. The alterations to the story are consistent with the lighthearted watercolor-and-pencil illustrations, which feature Two-Eyes microwaving her meager leftovers and One-Eye reading "Eye Claudius" while Three-Eyes peruses one book with one eye and a different volume with the other two. Children will enjoy the humor in this reincarnation, and it will make excellent fodder for reader's theater, with a script available on the author's Web site.—Grace Oliff, Ann Blanche Smith School, Hillsdale, NJ

From Booklist
An old tale gets a facelift in this lively version. Two-Eyes is treated badly by her sisters, One-Eye and Three-Eyes, who don't give her enough to eat. One day, she meets another two-eyed lady, who offers her an incantation that will provide plenty of food. The sisters become suspicious, but more charms ensue, leading Two-Eyes to a (literal) knight in shining armor. If the parameters of the story remain the same, the delightful line-and-watercolor artwork bubbles with sly, new details. Although the sisters' wardrobe suggests an earlier time, particulars such as a microwave and a TV add an amusing modernity. Some details will amuse adult readers most--for instance, One-Eye is shown reading Eye Claudius. On a more child-friendly level, one page is divided into six squares that show Two-Eyes up a tree, in every sense of the phrase, trying to sing her sisters to sleep. On the way to happily-ever-after, a good time will be had by all. Ilene Cooper

Sick of Cinderella?
By Kate Coombs
Just when you've read your kid Cinderella for the million zillionth time, along comes Aaron Shepard to the rescue with this retelling of a less well known but very fun fairy tale. Poor little Two-Eyes is the weird kid in her family since she has an even number of eyes; her older sisters One-Eyes and Three-Eyes are, of course, perfectly lovely by cultural standards in the neighborhood. Two-Eyes must dress in rags, do all the dirty work, and eat only leftovers--until the goat she tends turns out to be magic and starts giving her food to eat. When Two-Eyes seems well fed for a change, her suspicious sisters decide to spy on her. All I can say is that if you're going to put your sisters to sleep with a magic charm, be sure to count their eyes VERY carefully first! Artist Gary Clement has a lot of fun with this tale, throwing in anachronisms such as a microwave and a box of tissues. Did I mention the fairy godmother, the magic apple tree, and the handsome knight/prince? Let your two-eyed child take a look at this story!

Great edition of my favorite fairy tale
By Ulyyf
Little One Eye, Two Eyes, and Three Eyes was always one of my favorite fairy tales when I was growing up, so seeing it in its own picture book was just heaven to me.

And this version lives up to the one I grew up with, too.

Little Two-Eyes is despised by her sisters for being "different" (in the version I grew up with, it was for being normal, which makes more sense, but being "different" makes for a funnier punch line in the end) by having two eyes instead of one or three like they do. (Weirdly, they're shown watching TV with odd-eyed people.)

So they treat her like the classic red-headed stepchild - leftovers and rags - until she cries and cries. You can work out the gist of the end now, I'm sure :)

Very funny, and neat illustrations.

A Good Fairy Tale
By Darien Summers
I'm an adult, and actually just read this tale recently for the first time, and wondered how in the heck I had missed out of this one when I was a kid. I had never heard of it. Well, I just read it to my young daughter, and we both loved it. It has most of the elements of a well written fairy tale: magic, tragic drama and love.

The story is about three sisters named: One Eye, Two Eyes and Three Eyes. One Eye only has one eye, Two Eyes has two like everybody else and Three Eyes has three. Because Two Eyes looks just like everybody else, she is discriminated against by her sisters who look different, and even by her mom. Two Eyes is taught a magic spell which helps make things better for her until her curious family discovered what was going on and put a stop to her using the spell. Two Eyes is then told by a helpful old lady how to grow a magical tree. This tree's fruit can only be plucked by Two Eyes, so her sisters' and mother's mean diligence doesn't pay off. In the end, Two Eyes is rescued from the evil clutches of her family by a knight, and the two of them live happily ever after in a castle. One day, Two Eyes' sisters come asking for help and Two Eyes' does nothing out of spite from the past, and she takes care of her sisters - a nice ending, with a good message.
