Ball, an editor for the journal Nature, showcases the excitement of contemporary chemistry by departing from the standard subdivisions of the science and emphasizing the integration of input from biology, electronics, chaos, climatology, and other disciplines. His book is not a comprehensive treatment but rather a compilation of a variety of topics such as the highly publicized buckyballs and the less well known quasicrystals. Ball discusses these topics in an orderly progression from the changes in traditional research areas through the impact of the increased knowledge of molecular functionalities and concludes with a look at the consequences of the process of chemistry itself. The bibliography is current as of 1993, and its entries have been classified according to the level of the reader. Although this book is intended for the nonspecialist, a basic knowledge of chemistry would enhance appreciation of much of the material. Recommended for academic and large public libraries.

A fascinating update on a neglected area

The author contends that physics and astronomy get all the public attention these days, to the neglect of chemistry, yet advances in this field have more real impact on our lives. The most interesting parts of this book show how we are adapting biochemistry, such as enzymes, to everyday production of useful chemical resources. The book is written at the level of the "old" Scientific American, with plenty of real science and less of the "gee-whiz" of other popularizations. Thankfully, there is little need for math here, but read the first section carefully, where he explains the basic physics of molecules, which is central to the rest of the book. I enjoyed it thoroughly and it really brought this reader, who had his last chemistry in 1961, up to speed on chemistry today.

Designing the Molecular World

This is the best overview of chemistry that I have found. It can be read by senior chemistry majors and older chemists who want to know what has occurred up to the time of its publication. It should be revised to include the developments from the 1990s and 2000s. Freshman chemistry majors might read this to help fire their imaginations. Ditto organic and biochemistry students.

Definitive Guide to the Frontiers of Chemistry

Although slightly dated (published in 1996), Philip Ball's excellent book has lost none of its validity, nor its relevance. As a physics student, I have studied to varying levels of depth several of the topics covered in this book. I can honestly say that I gained more insight into the basic theory of molecules, as well as cutting edge work in molecular spectroscopy, molecular dynamics, the quantum mechanical theory of molecules, and molecular/organic electronics from this book than I have from years of university lectures. This was achieved, moreover, without any reliance on mathematics. Too often universities focus so heavily upon the mathematics and the computation that they gloss over many of the physical insights and the subtleties that Mr. Ball has captured in this work. This book is very thorough, and remarkably prescient (several scientists featured in this work have gone on to win Nobel Prizes for the achievements that Mr. Ball elaborates). Many of the topics selected for treatment in this work remain fertile and active areas of research in chemistry and physics. Because so many of these areas are still "cutting-edge," it is difficult to find an exposition of them that is accessible to a general audience. Thus Mr. Ball's book is not only the best, but quite possibly the only, opportunity for the general public to indulge in the frontiers of chemistry without having to wade into professional terminology and weighty mathematics. Certainly this book is valuable for students like myself but, I daresay, even some experts in these and tangent field could benefit from reading this book: it does a great job in outlining conceptually the basic concepts underlying a vast and vibrant field of science.
