A comprehensive treatment of visionary experience in some of the main texts of Jewish mysticism, this book reveals the overwhelmingly visual nature of religious experience in Jewish spirituality from antiquity through the late Middle Ages. Using phenomenological and critical historical tools, Wolfson examines Jewish mystical texts from late antiquity, pre-kabbalistic sources from the tenth to the twelfth centuries, and twelfth- and thirteenth-century kabbalistic literature. His work demonstrates that the sense of sight assumes an epistemic priority in these writings, reflecting and building upon those scriptural passages that affirm the visual nature of revelatory experience. Moreover, the author reveals an androcentric eroticism in the scopic mentality of Jewish mystics, which placed the externalized and representable form, the phallus, at the center of the visual encounter.

In the visionary experience, as Wolfson describes it, imagination serves a primary function, transmuting sensory data and rational concepts into symbols of those things beyond sense and reason. In this view, the experience of a vision is inseparable from the process of interpretation. Fundamentally challenging the conventional distinction between experience and exegesis, revelation and interpretation, Wolfson argues that for the mystics themselves, the study of texts occasioned a visual experience of the divine located in the imagination of the mystical interpreter. Thus he shows how Jewish mystics preserved the invisible transcendence of God without doing away with the visual dimension of belief.

Splendid!

Kabbalah is one of those mysticisms I had always wondered about. and wasn't able to get into, though I tried with Green. Didn't work. I can safely say that after trudging through hundreds of pages of "Through a Speculum That Shines" I have received much more than an inkling about a few medieval Jewish mystics and their joint effort, Zohar. Using impeccable scholarship as a ploy, Wolfson takes us into the inner sanctum of medieval hermeneutics in a homoerotic fellowship of scholars in 13th century Castile. He tickles my mind. Also recommended is the chapter on Wolfson in Kripal's Roads of Excess, Palaces of Wisdom.

Brilliant but very dense book

I rate this book a 10 in academic brilliance but only a 3
in presentation. There is no doubt that Dr.Elliot Wolfson
is a world class scholar in the field of Jewish Mysticism.
However I had to wind my way through extremely dense
scholarship to get at the material. I unfortunately
find this to be an annoying trait of most books in
this genre... Overall I rate this book highly and would
recommend it... but be prepared to invest the time and
effort...

Exploring five decades of township life, Hansen tells the stories of ordinary Indians whose lives were racialized and framed by the township, and how these residents domesticated and inhabited this urban space and its institutions, during apartheid and after.

Hansen demonstrates the complex and ambivalent nature of ordinary township life. While the ideology of apartheid was widely rejected, its practical institutions, from urban planning to houses, schools, and religious spaces, were embraced in order to remake the community. Hansen describes how the racial segmentation of South African society still informs daily life, notions of race, personhood, morality, and religious ethics. He also demonstrates the force of global religious imaginings that promise a universal and inclusive community amid uncertain lives and futures in the postapartheid nation-state.

Shakespeare's Comedies and Cultural Anthropology

The author sets out to establish a connection between the early festive comedies of Shakespeare, and the long-standing traditional celebrations in rural England during holiday periods such as Christmas, Shrove Tuesday, MidSummer's Eve, and May Day. Using 16th Century sources, he establishes a connection between these informal celebrations, plays, and progresses, and some of the characters, situations, and structure of the Comedies "Love's Labor Lost" a "Midsummer Night's Dream" and "Twelfth Night." He teases out of these sources the structure of humor, irony, and contradiction which enabled the rural people to poke fun at their lords, the landowners, and the church. He calls these festivities "Saturnalia" although they are more likely connected to early English or Germanic forms. Undoubtedly, this approach is useful in uncovering the meaning of topical references, common titles of playacting or Misrule, and establishing the audience's expectations at the time of their original performance.

Unfortunately, the authors exposition is unnecessarily obtuse. His arguments are wandering, and his sentences are garbled. The frequent quotations from the plays are a welcome break from the turgid and at times completely meaningless explanatory paragraphs. This density is increased by the long chapter on "The Merchant of Venice" which seems to me almost completely mistaken. There are almost none of the elements which Barber has been clarifying in the earlier comedies in TMOV. He tries to extend his argument to include forms of humor, but this fails to clarify his intent. He tries to extend his cultural argument to show how Shakespeare enlarged the role of humor in drama, but fails to show how the earlier comedies relate to this achievement. It is a weak crutch to hold up an interpretation of one of Shakepeare's most popular plays.

From an historical point of view (published in 1959), this book holds an essential place in the recent trend of Shakespearian scholarship towards locating and referencing the plays in the time and culture in which they were written.

This book traces the global, national, and local origins of the conflict between Muslims and Jews in France, challenging the belief that rising anti-Semitism in France is rooted solely in the unfolding crisis in Israel and Palestine. Maud Mandel shows how the conflict in fact emerged from processes internal to French society itself even as it was shaped by affairs elsewhere, particularly in North Africa during the era of decolonization.

Mandel examines moments in which conflicts between Muslims and Jews became a matter of concern to French police, the media, and an array of self-appointed spokesmen from both communities: Israel's War of Independence in 1948, France's decolonization of North Africa, the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, the 1968 student riots, and François Mitterrand's experiments with multiculturalism in the 1980s. She takes an in-depth, on-the-ground look at interethnic relations in Marseille, which is home to the country's largest Muslim and Jewish populations outside of Paris. She reveals how Muslims and Jews in France have related to each other in diverse ways throughout this history--as former residents of French North Africa, as immigrants competing for limited resources, as employers and employees, as victims of racist aggression, as religious minorities in a secularizing state, and as French citizens.

By Reading Jews and Muslims in Paris
This is a terrific book. It is all the more necessary to read it in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo massacre. The book is based upon a tremendous amount of research into numerous archives and published sources. Mandel does something that is really hard to do: she peels back layers and layers of contemporary perceptions and gets beneath them to reveal a very complex story that is neither politically correct nor viscerally satisfying to any interested parties. Muslim and Jewish groups and individuals, she shows, really only "became" what we now call "Muslims and Jews" over time. A host of forces, from communal leaders' way of talking about Muslims and Jews, to colonialism and the process of decolonization, to the Israeli-Arab conflict, to the way multiculturalism was articulated in France in the 1980s, shaped the notion that Muslims and Jews are overriding labels for these individuals and that the two groups are in almost inevitable conflict. The book helps us to understand both the long-term roots of recent events in Paris, and the way that they were hardly inevitable. That Mandel tells this complicated story with analytical rigor, artful writing, concision, and an evident human compassion for all concerned makes this book truly excellent.

Busy Equating and Excusing

If you are looking for a book that rationalizes Muslim antisemitism in France, then this is for you. Unfortunately, Mandels arguments should have emphasized the past 1500 years of Islamic antisemitism and easily extend to the global antisemitism problem, but they do not. Some interesting insights that may speak to Muslim rage, but nothing to explain why the 1,500 years of genocidal anti-Jewish rage is there to begin with unless one goes down the kill the kaffir/infidel path and she would rather look anywhere else. For a fuller understanding go Bostom, McCarthy or any of the brave Muslims critical of Islamic antisemitism e.g Salim Mansur, Brigitte Gabriel, Wafa Sultan and so on.

The prosperous Jewish community living today in Turkey and Morocco side by side with Muslims in harmonious way is indication that religion is a positive contributor in our relations. Just and fair policies will only produce a civilized conflict over issues that we disagree upon, but unjust policies will make such disagreements very violent. I agree with research methodology of the book but I do not necessarily agree will all conclusions. The book shows that human behavior irrespective of faith and religion is what leads to such violent conflicts.

Grade 7 Up-This collection of 12 stories is something of a mixed bag. Pat Brisson's opening selection, in which Carly, 16, runs a hilarious obstacle course through her high school to get to the girls' room, is lighthearted and entertaining. It is followed by a survey of depressed premenstrual young women from around the world. Alice McGill's "Moon Time Child" is a slave narrative in which Salome, 13, dreads her first period because it will render her a breeder. All is well, however, when a kind older woman finds a way for her to breed with the elder's grandson. In Deborah Heiligman's "Ritual Purity," tough, drug-addicted Mimi is sent to live with Orthodox Jewish relatives; when her aunt miscarries and Mimi saves her life, she also learns to value her own. Fraustino's "Sleeping Beauty" is the inner monologue of an overachieving premed student who denies her own pregnancy until she gives birth in a stall in her dorm bathroom. More affecting, and more subtly drawn, is Han Nolan's Southern Gothic "Maroon," about the death of a teenage girl by coat-hanger abortion, as seen through the eyes of her eight-year-old cousin. Despite the few bright spots, the tone tends to be heavy-handed and a bit preachy; overall the selections tell quite a bit more than they show. Good nonfiction, like Lynda Madaras's What's Happening to My Body? Book for Girls (Newmarket, 1991) and fiction like Erzsi Deàk and Kristin Embry Litchman's Period Pieces (HarperCollins, 2003) cover the subject with more style, humor, and grace.-Johanna Lewis, New York Public Library

This collection aims for an older audience and a broader range of experiences. Contributed by familiar youth authors as well as newcomers, the stories include a few first "moon times," many set in diverse cultures and historical times. In one story, a young African American slave dreads the period that will mark her a "breeder"; in another, a Lenni-Lenape Indian girl celebrates her first entrance to the woman's hut. In many selections, though, periods are just one element in complex, disturbing stories that focus instead on larger women's issues--pregnancy and miscarriage, sex, relationships, body image, and ties to family. In many of these stories, periods are inconvenient, gory (there are some startling, visceral details), and blindingly painful. Female Rites of Passage

Of all the possible themes for a collection of short stories, this has to be one of the most unlikely...menstruation. While the topic may appear a bit unseemly, it ultimately works to create a wonderful celebration of womanhood. The book is a series of biological coming-of-age stories; it portrays
menstruation as both celebration and curse, as something welcomed and dreaded. Most of all, it shows that `periods' bond all women across time and culture.
Several stories look at menstruation in a modern vein. Losing It is a wrenching look at losing one's virginity; an antidote to the Hollywood romanticism of the "first time." The Uterus Fairy is a cross-generational look at, well, uteruses. The mother is mourning an impending hysterectomy; her daughter is worrying about a possible pregnancy. The Heroic Quest of Douglas McGawain is one of the few comic tales and the only one told from a male's point of view (this "knight's" quest involves
tampons!)
Several stories look at menstruation from different cultural or historical perspectives. Getting one's period as a noblewoman in pre-revolutionary Russia meant being eligible for marriage to a politically-correct man. Instead, The Czarevna of Muscovy longs to be one of the dancing peasants she spies in the village courtyard; her pining has drastic consequences. Ritual Purity is a fascinating look at the Othrodox Jewish tradition of mikveh (monthly cleansing bath) and a troubled teen who seeks meaning in tradition and family. Moon Time Child is a look at a slave girl's dread of her "moon time" knowing that it will mark her as a "breeder" and mean a further loss of freedom.
Several stories transcend time and place. Sleeping Beauty is a musing on fairytales and menarche. Transfusion is a dramatic story of a mentally-ill woman's blood infusing another woman's life with meaning and strength. In a second powerful story, Maroon, a young girl worships her older, `hipper' cousin only to discover that her "hero" has done the unforgivable: become pregnant out of wedlock.
Some of the stories have violent themes although not graphically portrayed. There is also some adult language and sexual situations --again, not graphic. The very theme of the collection will be off-putting for some, titillating for others. The attractive cover and breezy fly ("Whether your cycle is regular or random, you prefer chocolate or chips, you break out or remain zit-free, you period is an indelible fact of life...") makes this book appear to be light-weight reading. But those who pick it up will be rewarded with uniformly high-quality writing. A great addition to high school collections,
middle school (with caveats) and certainly a women's studies course.

Excellent Anthology

I may not be the target audience for this book (I'm an adult male, I suspect most of its readers will be adolescent females), but I thought this was a terrific anthology, and a great way to get a discussion started about "that time of month." For girls, it gives some perspective, and for boys (if you could get them to read it), it would go a long way toward demystifying the ways of women (!). I especially liked Dianne Ochiltree's "The Woman's House," and David Lubar's very funny "The Heroic Quest of Douglas McGawain" (a teenage boy goes out to buy tampons for his girlfriend!).

"The Women's House" in Don't Cramp My Style

I just read the new book Don't Cramp My Style. The story "The Women's House" in it is awesome! Wow! I cried at the end. I became totally immersed in the story and felt that I was right there observing the young girl and her family. The story involves the behaviors and customs of young Native Americans girls as they reach puberty and begin their first blood. It was written through the eyes of Sparrow Song, a young Native American girl, which made it very realistic and extremely touching.

Strickland traces the origins of the negative pictorial code used to portray monsters, demons, and non-Christian peoples to pseudoscientific theories of astrology, climate, and physiognomy, some dating back to classical times. She also considers the code in light of contemporary Christian eschatological beliefs and concepts of monstrosity and rejection.

This is the first study to situate representations of the enemies of medieval Christendom within the broader cultural context of literature, theology, and politics. It is also the first to explore the elements of that imagery as a code and to elucidate the artistic means by which boundaries were effectively blurred between imaginary monsters and rejected social groups.

Carol Gracie is an acclaimed naturalist, photographer, and writer. Now retired, she worked for many years as an educator and tour leader with the New York Botanical Garden before teaming up with Scott Mori, her husband, on botanical research projects in South America. An Ideal Wildflower Book

Carol Gracie's book is a joy to read, each chapter telling the engrossing story of a flower (or two) and its related species, an ideal botanical book. She covers everything from the latest science to cultural history to personal observations. The thoroughness of her research is rare and has given us a book that we have only dreamed of. Highlights covered include pollination, growth patterns, name derivations, the science behind name changes, medicinal and other uses, interconnections with other plant and animal species, historical associations, horticultural uses, and much more. She has brilliantly illustrated the significant characteristics with gorgeous photographs, the close-ups especially stunning, revealing the beauty and remarkable inner structure of flowers.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with any interest in flowers and the natural world. Even the flowers one might not be familiar with are fascinating for Gracie's wonderful stories, information, and insights into the plant world.

Glorious book for a glorious subject

Field botanists will remember Carol Gracie's name as the co-author with Steven Clemants (deceased) of the best-selling field guide to Northeastern wildflowers, "Flowers in the Field and Forest." This new work expands upon the knowledge gained of plant identification of that flora by examining all aspects of the natural history of more than 35 species. These are surely among the most attractive blooms in our section of the Eastern Deciduous Forest, itself world-famous for spring wildflowers and autumn leaf color. Carol, a friend and colleague, provides 500 spectacular color photos, which she gathered while travelling 27,000 miles throughout the region. Carol also provides an account of the life history of each plant, its lore, cultural uses, and the latest scientific information. This book therefore is a primary contribution to the literature of our flora, including some never-before published accounts of pollination ecology. The book will be purchased not only for the stunning photographs, which reveal unsuspected aspects of flower symmetry and color pattern, but also for the bibliographical references section that provides access to the literature. Taken at random, references to wild ginger range from "The Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition" (1806) to a popular treatment as "Plant of the Year" (2010). Included is a reference to "Aristolochic acid neuropathy: a worldwide (kidney) problem" in a medical journal. I count all this as solid scholarship. But it is the natural history that forms the heart of the text, an encyclopedic review of each of the flowers in history, in the kitchen, in art and literature, Native American and Colonial lore and popular culture. Because I have three species of violets growing in my front yard (no thanks to any effort on my part!), I read that chapter first. I found there a wealth of information too extensive to detail in a review. It is enough to say that I will now be adding violets to my food choices.
Carol's book will find a place not only on the coffee table, but also as supplemental reading in such courses as field botany, plant taxonomy and Northeastern natural history. High School librarians will find this book to be a wonderful way to introduce real-world botany back into a biology curriculum that is now practically devoid of biological interest. "Spring Wildflowers" is a delight to the eye and the mind. At the price, it is a "steal" and should be acquired by all naturalists in the region.

Spring Wildflower book

Carol Gracie has published a unique book for wildflower enthusiasts. There are many field guides, but they give you only the barest of information, on each specimen, as they are designed for carrying with you when you go looking for these treasures. This book is a different kind of treasure: a leisurely exploration of each flower...there are 9 pages alone on the Spring trout lily! No other wildflower book does this! Fellow botanists, serious collectors, or ocassional readers will love this book for it's gorgeous photographs, details about the plants actual life cycle, and stories about their names and histories.
