Mr. Gumpy, who charmed us in Mr. Gumpy's Outing, is ready for another day trip--this time in his lovely red car. About the Author
John Burningham is one of the most prestigious and well-loved illustrators working in the children's book field today. Trained at the Central School of Art, his first picture book, Borka was published in 1963. He has won the Kate Greenaway Award twice for Borka and Mr Gumpy's Outing, and has enjoyed a distinguished career spanning 50 years.

A pleasant series parents will enjoy reading to children.

Not unlike Dr. Seuss, yet somehow significantly different, the author of the Mr. Gumpy series has successfully combined simple, entertaining drawings with a unique, almost experimental style of children's writing that focuses on the sounds of words and their relationships with other words. Sound repitition plays a key role in the rhythm and tempo of the Mr. Gumpy books in the tradition of The Cat In The Hat, but with a much less silly tone. Burnigham, instead of make-believe words and characters, uses higher-level colloquial language and animal characters that can talk. The short adventures of Mr. Gumpy and his friends will be entertaining to adults and brief enough to hold the attention of young children, who really enjoy the active black and white pictures. This book must be read aloud to fully experience the polished sounds of the carefully chosen words. Read it to your child, and the sentences will dance off your tongue and perform a ballet for those wh! o are listening.

Mr. Gumpy's Motor Car

My two-year-old absolutely loves this story. Ever since we've discovered it, he has me read it too him every night before bedtime. It is just as fun and amusing for adults to read as it is for children. My son loves to "read" along as he has memorized practically the whole book. The illustrations are great and only add to the excitement of the book. Mr. Gumpy's Motor Car is told in a simplistic manner that is even understandable to very young children.

More Fun With Mr. Gumpy

My daughter and I really enjoyed Mr. Gumpy's Outing, so I was excited to discover this volume at the library. Like the previous book, it tells a charming story of Mr. Gumpy taking all the animals and children out on an adventure--this time in his motor car.
The illustrations are fun. They use a lot of cross-hatching, which could make them feel harsh, but instead it lends a certain softness and feeling of the fuzziness of "the olden days". I also love that the motor car is a classic antique convertible.
So, everyone piles in, and then a storm comes. And the storm makes the back roads all muddy and the car gets stuck. Everyone tries to get out of pushing by making a bunch of excuses--and then they really get stuck. Finally, everyone gets out and helps to push the car out of the mud.
I think what I like best about Mr. Gumpy, though, is that he must know he's inviting disaster on these outings of his. And yet, he still takes everyone when they ask--and even invites them to come out another time. He has an abundance of patience and seems to enjoy bringing joy to the lives of his neighbors (be they animals or children).
