Redressing this neglect, Amy Greenberg reveals the meaning of this central institution by comparing the fire departments of Baltimore, St. Louis, and San Francisco from the late eighteenth to the mid-nineteenth century. Volunteer fire companies protected highly flammable cities from fire and provided many men with friendship, brotherhood, and a way to prove their civic virtue. While other scholars have claimed that fire companies were primarily working class, Greenberg shows that they were actually mixed social groups: merchants and working men, immigrants and native-born--all found a common identity as firemen. Cause for Alarm presents a new vision of urban culture, one defined not by class but by gender. Volunteer firefighting united men in a shared masculine celebration of strength and bravery, skill and appearance. In an otherwise alienating environment, fire companies provided men from all walks of life with status, community, and an outlet for competition, which sometimes even led to elaborate brawls.

While this culture was fully respected in the early nineteenth century, changing social norms eventually demonized the firemen's vision of masculinity. Greenberg assesses the legitimacy of accusations of violence and political corruption against the firemen in each city, and places the municipalization of firefighting in the context of urban social change, new ideals of citizenship, the rapid spread of fire insurance, and new firefighting technologies.

Very high in historical value, Excellent,Pioneering research

Amy S. Greenberg, Cause for Alarm. (University of Princeton Press 1998). Amy S. Greenberg is an Assistant Professor of History at Pennsylvania State University. She is tackling a largely male-dominated subject, but also one that is for the most part unexplored by historians. Her introduction is jam-packed with information. The introduction is set like that of a Greek drama, bringing the reader up to speed before the meat of the book is consumed. She does an excellent job of placing the volunteer fire fighter on a pedestal and then glorifying him as a demagogue. Later on we see the institution of volunteer firemen corrupted by several factors, and the firemen, like actors, take a great fall from grace due to their tragic flaws.
Greenberg covers several aspects of her work in the cities of Baltimore, St. Louis, and San Francisco. Social, political, and cultural aspects seem to be the main issue here. This book also marks the transition from volunteer fire companies to paid full-time departments as well as the change in the American way of thinking of how and who should fight these fires. It is demonstrated in this book how the volunteers appeared Superman-like on paper as well in the public eye.
The "power trip" some of these men experienced would contribute to their downfall. Always wanting to be the first company on scene, drinking and swearing, and other daralous behavior that the personnel engaged in helped put them out of business.
In an age with any out television, firefighting was a form of entertainment for these men. Simply put, modernization helped to rid the large cities of competitive volunteer fire companies, only to see them replaced by paid personnel. (Don't worry most firefighters of today are every bit as competitive as the ones portrayed in this book) "Firemen provided the stability and order that allowed for the growth of professionalism. And with that transformation, the volunteer fireman fell from grace." Here we see how volunteers started to be seen as a burden, rather than a help to society. Why would a shop owner want to lose his employees for several hours to fight a fire that did not endanger his livelihood? Or better yet why would he close the shop to go to the rescue of some one he had no vested interest in. These are the issues that are struggled with inside the book.
Several documents are used in this book as well as primary and secondary sources. R. N. Seiel gave a favorable review in Choice (January 1999). This book would contribute to anyone's understanding of this subject matter. Today most people would not understand the act of fighting fire and receiving no compensation for it. This book is, as advertised, a cause for alarm.

A Splendid and Serious Concept

Should you buy "The 'I Ching: A Biography"?

Yes, if you are among the thousands, perhaps millions, who use the I Ching in their own lives and want even more understanding of its many lives. Yes, if you are among the scholars interested in the history of great religious books. Yes, if you find the by-ways and side-roads of social & religious thought as fascinating as the main highways.

For example, the first section on the domestic, within China, evolution of the Changes, includes three chapters: on the genesis of the Changes, the making of a classic, and interpreting the Changes. These are well written, informative, rich in detail. On p.41, as an instance, is the story from 672 BCE of a diviner's interpretation of Guan and Pi (which resemble gates, openings, doors) for the Marquis of Li's question on his son's chances of becoming a ruler. The interpretation of the couplet, "Beholding the light of the state, It is beneficial to be the king's guest", goes into the lower trigram, representing land; the upper trigram, the Sun, and the upper trigram of the Pi, the heavens. Yes, the Marquis's son will occupy the land.

From such a rich, detailed baseline of early interpretation, the rest of Section I develops the changes in interpretation and uses, schools of thought, disputes among these, and the elaborations within China of the Changes. Fascinating and vividly written.

Yet trade-offs had to be made in preparing this otherwise wonderful book. The small book format of series (about 5" x 7") perhaps is not a perfect match for such a rich, large topic. For example, some illustrations are readable in this size (p. 81) and some are less so (p.80). This may be my eyes and might not be a concern for other readers, as a helpful comment has pointed out.

Part II (about 100 5 x 7, wide-margin pages), has to cover the centuries from about 1600 to the present across East Asia (Japan, Korea, etc.) and the West (US, South American countries, Europe, etc.). The author has had to choose between breadth or depth. The choice often is breadth, leading to such passages as

"Another of Paz's close associates in Mexico was his disciple Francisco Serano, who also experimented with the use of the Changes as a literary device, especially in poetic composition. Among the visual artists in their creative circle were painters such as Arnaldo Coen, Aturo Rivera, Augusto Ramirez, and Felipe Erenberg, all of whom found inspiration and guidance in the Yijing." (p. 205)---

This is followed by another list of names, this time of musicians with no more information of the ways in which the Changes influenced their music

Thus, we have a scholarly, careful, well-informed writer (Richard J. Smith)writing about a huge topic in a small book. That he does as well as he does is a credit to the author, to the inherent interest of the I Ching and its own changes.

Overall, the book is not wildly expensive; it makes for a good read; and may be deeply meaningful to students of the history and diffusion of the I Ching. Just be aware that the many pleasures are accompanied by some slight pain.

Accessible, Invaluable Advanced Information in Handsome Binding

Today Princeton University Press's distributor sent me a dozen copies of this in error, they seem to have mixed up the ISBN on the Wilhelm/Baynes I Ching which is what I actually ordered. I had read it previously, but I am not sending them back, if that tells you anything about the quality of this book! A wonderful work on The I Ching, full of new information. Scholarly, but not dry, easy and enjoyable to read for a layman who likes I Ching and is familiar with it. The book is so unique and integral to I Ching study that our company is including it in their upcoming coursework for I Ching studies.

It's also a very attractive book, while most books from Princeton University Press are quite well bound, this one stands out. It is small with a heavy matte pearl finish dust jacket and the cloth binding is lapis blue with gold lettering. The leaves are deckle-edged (uneven like handmade very attractive). This would make a great gift for any fan of the I Ching or just a book nerd.

Only through a comparative look at Giambologna and his contemporaries, it argues, can we understand them individually--or understand the period in which they worked.

Michael Cole shows how the concerns of central Italian artists changed during the last decades of the Cinquecento. Whereas their predecessors had focused on specific objects and on the particularities of materials, late sixteenth-century sculptors turned their attention to models and design. The iconic figure gave way to the pose, individualized characters to abstractions. Above all, the multiplicity of master crafts that had once divided sculptors into those who fashioned gold or bronze or stone yielded to a more unifying aspiration, as nearly every ambitious sculptor, whatever his training, strove to become an architect.

The Best Option Pricing book I've read!,

After reading million books on derivative pricing, this one is the only one which defenitely combines a practical approach to it. You'll start learning about all the maths you need and all the building blocks, all by examples. And suddenly on Chapter 11, it puts it all together and effortless you can price any option with any payoff you can imagine, I got impress withmyself. I work at Credit Suisse First Boston and we have it in all the Quant's desks.

Hands-on & easy to read

This is a great little book. I would put it in my category of 'original' books on quant finance, which includes books written by Paul Wilmott, Mark Joshi, Rick Osband and Neftci.
The reason being that the author uses a more informal style than most quant books and is very hands-on. If you're interested in understanding quant models and eventually applying them in the real world, then this is the kind of book you want. If you're looking for mathematical beauty and formalism, then look elsewhere.
The editors could have done a better job with some of the flow and formatting - maybe next edition (it is sometimes hard to link the text to the figures and tables).

Very good coverage, practical orientation

Consider first, this book's subtitle, "Tools for Incomplete Markets." A "complete market" (the kind assumed by the Black-Scholes-Merton model) is one in which any derivative product can be dynamically replicated by means of cash and the underlying asset. An incomplete market, then, is one is which the world of derivatives and their underlyings do not match each other in the point-by-point replicable manner implied by that definition of completeness. This failure to match makes for a necessary imperfection in hedging. That, of course, is the real world, where traders practice, as Scholes and Merton famously discovered in Greenwich, CT not long ago!
A variety of illustrations of this practical emphasis might be adduced. In the preface, for example, Dr. Cerný tells us frankly that in his experience "is it hard to understand the Itô calculus, but it is possible to get used to it and to apply it quickly and consistently...." [italics in original.]

About the Author

Patricia Lauber is the author of more than sixty-five books for young readers. Many of them are in the field of science, and their range reflects the diversity of her own interests-bats, dolphins, dogs, volcanoes, earthquakes, the ice ages, the Everglades, the planets, earthworms. I found the book Tales Mummies Tell fascinating. This book is a mix of mystery and fact all in one! I recommend this book to people from years 11-adult because of the interesting,comprehendable information in it. I enjoyed this book because of my curiousity for it's subject. The book tells about preservation of mummies, the mummification proccess of mummies in Ancient Egypt, bodies found in bogs in Denmark, Ramesses III, and many more mindboggling facts. So if you are interested in this topic then I would suggest you read this book.

Although some famous mummies like Otzi and Juanita aren't in here, other mummies that you might not find in most places are here. Allah is not Almighty God

Allah the god of Islam is not Almighty God of the Jews and Christians. It is absolutely clear in Arabic, the Quran and Sharia.
Islam is the pagan religion of Allah, not a religion of Abraham and Ilah.
This text is incorrectly translated. Allah is not Almighty God.
In Arabic, the Qur'an and Sharia, Almighty God is Ilah and Allah is ‘the god’ in English.
Almighty God is Ilah, Ar Rahman, the Beneficent, the Most Merciful, the Most Gracious.
Therefore the Qur’an was named The Criterion, the criterion between good and evil.
Qur’an 41:84 It is He Who is the only God in the heaven and the only God on the earth.
Ibn Kathir: This means He is the God of those who are in the heaven and the God of those on earth.

Consise history of three monotheistic religions

One of the best books I read in this subject. In three volumes you get the origins of the three religions with comparisons and particular beliefs. very valuable comments on scriptures. Book has considerable amount of references and original quotations. I really enjoy the way Mr. Peters writes. I found his book on Life of Mohammed also very nice and informative. These three volumes are also same quality.

He explores how Boston ministers reconstituted their moral languages over the course of a century, from a scriptural discourse against many market practices to a providential worldview that justified England's commercial hegemony and legitimated the market as a divine construct. Valeri moves beyond simplistic readings that reduce commercial activity to secular mind-sets, and refutes the popular notion of an inherent affinity between puritanism and capitalism. He shows how changing ideas about what it meant to be pious and puritan informed the business practices of Boston's merchants, who filled their private notebooks with meditations on scripture and the natural order, founded and led churches, and inscribed spiritual reflections in their letters and diaries.

A detailed & complex account of early American market culture

Mark Valeri provided readers a summary of his book in the opening line of the preface where he stated that, "This book explains how transformations in religious thought contributed to the creation of a market culture in early America." Valeri grounded this story of transformation by employing the biographies of prominent New England merchants and ministers throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. During these hundred years, America experienced a drastic shift in religious and public understanding of a market economy. This understanding had its foundations long before this period and extends to today.

Valeri proceeded chronologically through this period and detailed how ministers' shifting views regarding church discipline, providence, and the political sphere influenced views of markets by merchants in their congregations and the wider culture. Early Puritan ministers sought to teach merchants the faith and ensure that their work conformed to the church's teachings on usury, greed, and other sins connected with money. However, as the political situation changed alongside the ministers' views of providence, government began exercising moral supervision over economic affairs. This supervision, which was deeply influenced by a desire for hegemony over Catholic countries, legitimated market ideas and practices that had previously been condemned and led to a shift in moral thinking among ministers and merchants. The combination of all of these developments led to the establishment of the market economy used by all and questioned by few.

The strengths and weaknesses of the book lie with Valeri's vast knowledge of economic, political, and religious history. His knowledge enabled him to paint a complex, nuanced, and detailed picture of the transformations during this period. However, at times this complex and nuanced picture that he filled with details of names, dates, and details obscured the larger themes Valeri sought to relay.

Mark Valeri takes his readers on an engaging and entertaining ride through Puritan thought on the economy, showing how Christian leaders shifted their perspective in critical dialogue with commercial developments. It's a complicated, and fascinating story, and Valeri is the person to tell it. An essential book for anyone interested in the relationship of faith and economics.

Jung on Christianity

The psychology of Carl Jung (1875-1961) is the system of psychology most receptive to the beneficial influence of religion in a person's life. In this selection of writings, mostly from Volume 11 of the Collected Works, Jung focuses on the strengths and limitations of western religion. For Jung, western religion is the organic unity of Church Christianity and its "shadows": Gnosticism and alchemy. Two thirds of the book consist of two long essays, "A Psychological Approach to the Dogma of the Trinity" (1942) and "Transformation Symbolism in the Mass" (1942). In these essays, as well as the shorter ones, Jung walks a fine line. His analysis could scandalize a traditional (and otherwise unimaginative) Christian believer; at the same time, Jung's profound respect for the depth and wisdom of Christianity stands in stark contrast to the flippant disregard some elements of the New Age movement pay it. For Jung, Christianity (with its shadows) is an organic system that contains, though sometimes in obscure ways, everything needed for psychology growth and individuation. For anyone who was raised Christian but who now finds Christianity unaccountably unsatisfactory, this book could catalyze renewed spiritual explorations in any one of number of directions.

A Pastoral Care Foundation

I do not recommend Jung for recreational reading. This collection of his essays is quite well focused on the subject but it is only for those seriously interested in the subject. It is quite useful for any pastor or Minister seeking to better understand the relationship of pastoral care and clinical psychology.
