Serious, readable history of American Protestant views of Islam

Kidd points out early in his eminently readable account of American Christian images of Muslims and Islam that he is not a scholar of Islam but rather of American religion. Thus, he makes no attempt to assess the accuracy of the claims about Muhammad, the Qur'an, or Muslim "culture" that his mostly conservative, mission-focused Protestant scholars and authors make over three-plus centuries, from the colonial period until the aftermath of 9/11. Instead, he shows both continuous strands in views of Muslims and significant shifts in how Christians related to them. To do so, he draws from a vast array of church publications, newspaper accounts, and scholarly and popular books. His first chapter, on Anglo-American images of Islam, demonstrates how Islam was mostly used in intra-Protestant debate: one way to discredit your opponents was to liken them to Muhammad. (A parallel theme, the polemical Protestant link between Islam and "popery" [Catholicism] recurs throughout.) The next chapter, on images of Islam and Muslims in the early republic, addresses the concern over Barbary piracy and the captivity narratives that resulted, with increased attention to the political despotism as well as theological error of Muslims. The next three chapters focus on missionary activity aimed (largely in vain) at conversion of Muslims. These fascinating chapters, full of historical detail, illustrate the persistence of images of Muhammad as "false prophet" -- and the ways in which negative images of Islam's prophet and holy book could serve as a stumbling block to evangelization. Increasingly, however, Zionism and American foreign policy in the Middle East created a barrier to understanding between Arab Muslims and Christian missionaries. Kidd here, as earlier, draws links between various theological approaches (premillenial dispensationalism, postmillenialism, etc.) and attitudes toward Israel and the place of Arabs and Islam in end-times scenarios - a subject which recurs in the penultimate chapter. (For those without solid background in Christian theology, a few more sentences of explanation at strategic points would be useful.) A chapter on Muslims in America contains more exposition as a prelude to an exploration of how Christian theologians, white and black, responded to African-American Muslim movements, separatist and "orthodox" (not his term). The final chapter, on post-9/11 Christian approaches to Islam, makes the case successfully that though the negative images circulating are perhaps proportionately more present as part of evangelical Christian discussions, they are largely consonant with those offered by American Christian thinkers over the centuries.

A Helpful Historical Survey

This is a detailed and thorough documentation and analysis of what American Christians have been saying about Islam and/or Muslims throughout American history. It's interesting to see the key themes that have remained central to the discussion despite changing historical circumstances. The reader will be motivated to think more clearly about Islam in order to be sure he or she is not simply parroting views that have been articulated throughout several centuries or leaning on convenient stereotypes.

American religious historian Thomas Kidd’s monograph, American Christians and Islam, details how American Christians have interacted with Islam and Muslims between the early Republican period and today. Kidd posits that little has changed over the course of roughly two centuries, as American Christian missionaries continue their attempts to convert Muslims as part of Christian eschatological views of end times. Further, he notes that simultaneous to missionary work, American Christians throughout the intervening periods employ anecdotes about Islam and Muslims to criticize and defame one another in religious and political debates. Thus, he concludes that American views of Islam exhibit more about Americans than Islam itself.

Starting in the colonial period, Kidd holds that “Islam was typically used for religious purposes in religious debates, while later [American] commentators often implemented knowledge of despotic Islamic states to support political points." (p. 1) Further, Kidd notes that American Protestants frequently criticized Islam alongside Roman Catholicism, linking the two in the spirit of the Antichrist, irrationality and superstitions. PP. 8-9) Thus, to call one’s opponents a “Mahomet” was to simultaneously justify the accuser as a righteous Christian and the accused as conniving and untrustworthy. Over the course of time, however, rhetoric revolving around Islam became a tool with which Muslims, particularly the Nation of Islam, criticized “America’s endemic racism” under a white “hegemonic Christianity.” (p. 119) Though, despite raising valid reproaches over race relations, American Christians viewed the Nation of Islam as either a logical reaction growing from African-American repressions or summarily dismissed as being radical and cult-like.

Contemporaneous to employing Islam as a rhetorical device, Kidd argues American Christians felt impelled to counter rival Islamic evangelicalism. Kidd posits that this need to missionize and convert arose from a belief that "history was moving inexorably toward Christ's ultimate triumph," requiring the defeat or conversion of Muslims before the Biblical last days. (p. xii) However, as missions proved unsuccessful in Muslim countries, typically due to a prohibition of on Christian proselyting, missionaries shifted from conversion as an emphasis to modernization and ‘civilizing.’ To that end, Kidd analyzes missionaries such as Samuel Zwemer to establish a switch from dispensationalist approaches to the newer "postmillennial confidence about Christ's inexorable triumph in the Muslim world." (p. 74) Frequently, postmillennial missions became justified in a manner that continued to characterize Muslims as misogynistic and/or backward while also hoping that "Anglo-American Christian civilization" will reform Muslims through "educational institutions and military power." (p. 57)

In short, Kidd’s monograph successfully demonstrates that little has changed in the American Christian portrayals or interactions with Islam. Despite this success, however, Kidd does not adequately establish the extent of how American Christians views influenced political events in the nation, limiting his study to the narrow field of religious history. To point, he needs to demonstrate how a desire to restore Israel has been influenced by conservative American Protestants, if it has at all. As the restoration of Israel was predominately a British affair, a discussion regarding U.S. political involvement with Israel may strengthen an argument of an overarching religiosity in U.S. – Israeli relations that Kidd seemingly suggests. Regardless, his call "that Christians take Muslims seriously, minimize or eliminate unnecessarily offensive language, and highlight cultural commonalities, and refuse to indulge in sensational stories about the ostensibly evil and demonic character of Islam" is well supported in this monographs accounting of the continuing poor relations between Americans and Islam. (p. 169)
