A Natural History of Amphibians, by Robert C. Stebbins, Nathan W. Cohen

This is a book for all readers who want to learn about amphibians, the animal group that includes frogs, toads, salamanders, and caecilians. It draws on many years of classroom teaching, laboratory experience, and field observation by the authors. Robert Stebbins and Nathan Cohen lead readers on a fascinating odyssey as they explore some of nature's most interesting creatures, interspersing their own observations throughout the book. A Natural History of Amphibians can serve as a textbook for students and independent learners, as an overview of the field for professional scientists and land managers, and as an engaging introduction for general readers.

The class Amphibia contains more than 4,500 known living species. New species are being discovered so rapidly that the number may grow to more than 5,000 during our lifetimes. However, their numbers are being rapidly decimated around the globe, largely due to the encroachment of humans on amphibian habitats and from growing human-caused environmental pollution, discussed at length in the final chapter. The authors focus our attention on the "natural history" of amphibians worldwide and emphasize their interactions with their environments over time: where they live; how they reproduce; how they have been affected by evolutionary processes; what factors will determine their destinies over time. Through the experienced eyes of the authors, who are skilled observers, we come to see and understand the place of amphibians in the natural world around us.

Superb
By Dr. Lee D. Carlson
Amphibians usually are ignored when speaking about species that are threatened with extinction. Unlike birds and mammals, amphibians are not romanticized in the nature magazines of the popular press, due possibly in part to their physical appearance, which may not garner sympathy as compared for example to a bald eagle or an elephant. But amphibians are fascinating and beautiful creatures, and in this book their biology and evolution is discussed concisely but effectively. Those readers, such as this reviewer, who are not familiar with the subject matter but who are very curious about the biology of amphibians, will find a good introduction here, and many references can be consulted for readers who need more details.

There are many interesting discussions in the book, and many surprises for those who are new to the subject. For example, it is surprising to learn that there are salamanders that can grow to over 1.5 meters, that some amphibians keep their gills throughout their life, instead of losing them, as is typically the case for most of the species, and that amphibians usually drink by dermal absorption. The authors also describe the breathing mechanisms for amphibians, and the reasons why one observes a different frequency between the movements of the throat and the body. Readers with a background in physics in particular will appreciate this discussion, along with others such as the vision capabilities of amphibians (they focus by changing the position of the lens rather than its shape), their extraordinary auditory capabilities, and their hydroregulation. It is also amazing to learn that amphibians can survive freezing of their bodily fluids by converting liver glycogen to glucose in response to the formation of ice in their body tissue. By far the most interesting discussion in the book though is on "shoreline orientation" and what information amphibians need to carry it out.

The book ends with discussions on the survival/extinction status of amphibians, with a list of the threatened species. Convincing arguments are given for the need of the biosphere to maintain the amphibian species, but it will be interesting to see if the author's recommendations are carried out. As a statistical survey might show, humans do not seem to care too much about amphibians, and so it might be more difficult to preserve them than is the case for other animals. But to not hear a coqui frog in Puerto Rico, or to not see hordes of toads coming out in the summer rain would definitely diminish the human quality of life.

Good book, a lttle technical
By merrymousies
I don't have a biology background but was (am) very interested in learning more about amphibians since we're setting up a neat frog pond in the back yard. So this was a book I came across and its pretty good for the lay person like me but it does get a bit technical in parts (so its probably better for beginner biology student or someone with the basics already under their belt). There are some really neat drawings in here - like those that show the different toe shapes of different salamanders and then go on to describe the different modes of locomotion. There's interesting behavioral info like territorialism in salamanders (I had no idea! they always seem so mellow!) And there's a fascinating chapter (short unfortunately) on homing and migration. There are lots of neat chapters, those are just a few items that spring to mind. I'm still looking for more books that will give me a good basic understanding of the life and times of amphibians but this was certainly a great start. I highly recommend it since it does have so much info and for the lay person like myself it gave me a chance to expand my knowledge. I'm fascinated by vernal pools and the whole migration/reproduction cycles but this was a good start.

well-written and easy to read
By Jodi
This book is intended for a general audience and is great for anyone who wants to know more about frogs, toads, salamanders, and caecilians. Despite this fact, I'm sure that even professional herpetologists will find this book interesting and learn something that they do not know. Chapters include: skin, breathing, food habits, voice, reproduction and declining amphibians. Overall, an interesting and highly informative book. Highly recommended!

Group Theory: Birdtracks, Lie's, and Exceptional Groups, by Predrag Cvitanović

If classical Lie groups preserve bilinear vector norms, what Lie groups preserve trilinear, quadrilinear, and higher order invariants? Answering this question from a fresh and original perspective, Predrag Cvitanovic takes the reader on the amazing, four-thousand-diagram journey through the theory of Lie groups. This book is the first to systematically develop, explain, and apply diagrammatic projection operators to construct all semi-simple Lie algebras, both classical and exceptional.

The invariant tensors are presented in a somewhat unconventional, but in recent years widely used, "birdtracks" notation inspired by the Feynman diagrams of quantum field theory. Notably, invariant tensor diagrams replace algebraic reasoning in carrying out all group-theoretic computations. The diagrammatic approach is particularly effective in evaluating complicated coefficients and group weights, and revealing symmetries hidden by conventional algebraic or index notations. The book covers most topics needed in applications from this new perspective: permutations, Young projection operators, spinorial representations, Casimir operators, and Dynkin indices. Beyond this well-traveled territory, more exotic vistas open up, such as "negative dimensional" relations between various groups and their representations. The most intriguing result of classifying primitive invariants is the emergence of all exceptional Lie groups in a single family, and the attendant pattern of exceptional and classical Lie groups, the so-called Magic Triangle. Written in a lively and personable style, the book is aimed at researchers and graduate students in theoretical physics and mathematics.

Review
"This book has to be seen to be believed! The title, Group Theory, is nothing if not surprising, given that the material dealt with by Predrag Cvitanovi? in these roughly 250 pages requires a level of sophistication well beyond what is offered in the early stages of university algebra. In point of fact, the general theme of the book under review is Lie theory with representation theory in the foreground, and Cvitanovi?'s revolutionary goal (e.g., 'birdtracks') and, for lack of a better word, the attendant combinatorics. . . . [F]or the right reader, which is to say, an R>0-linear combination of mathematician and physicist equipped with a zeal for novel combinatorics flavored diagram-gymnastics, this book will be a treat and a thrill, and its new and radical way to compute many things Lie is bound to make its mark."--Michael Berg, MAA Reviews

"More than just an innovative notation, this book offers a conceptually novel alternative path to a key mathematical result, the classification of finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras. . . . While this volume is an obvious resource for physics students, the traces of physics that remain in the work will elucidate for mathematics students how physics uses Lie groups as a tool."--D.V. Feldman, Choice

"I think that the book is a very interesting and thought provoking contribution to the literature on representations of compact Lie groups. It has many interesting original aspects that deserve to be known much better than they are."--Karl-Hermann Neeb, Journal of the Lie Theory

"[T]he narrative of the book is written in a relaxed and witty style. The book is intriguing as well as entertaining."--Jeb F. Willenbring, Mathematical Reviews

From the Back Cover

"In Group Theory, we get a sense of the quest Cvitanovi? has been on, which makes the book much more fun to read than the average mathematics text. This book is intriguing, novel, and important."--John Baez, University of California, Riverside

"There has been an urgent need for an in-print and readily available version of Cvitanovi?'s innovative and systematic approach to the group-theoretic calculations occurring in theoretical physics and beyond. Well-organized and well-written, this book is definitely an important and valuable contribution to its field."--Alan J. Macfarlane, Cambridge University

A beautiful work you must have
By J. MOLDOVAN
Any practitioner of the famous Bourbaki group would have a brain implosion if they tried to read this book. Their aversion to "practical" and "visual" tools in mathematics as opposed to the rigorous formalisms for which they are justifiably famous is well documented by Benoit Mandelbrot, amongst others. They would not like this work.

This book is, first and foremost, a book about beauty with beautiful ideas and striking visuals. This is deliberately so. As the author states, "if diagrammatic notation is to succeed, it need not only be precise, but also beautiful". Of course one would expect that a book whose subject matter is primarily the many elegant symmetries of nature would end up dealing with beauty, not only at the mathematical but also at the visual level. I can testify to the success of Professor Cvitanovic's endeavors on this front. When the book arrived I showed it to my wife, who has some artistic training and a plus-critical eye for visuals, (but who certainly can't tell the difference between a casimir and a casserole). Her response said it all.

To fully appreciate this book you need postgraduate qualifications in a slew of highly technical subjects and I won't pretend that my qualifications are anywhere nearly sufficient for this. But I am mathematically literate enough and have enough formal training, (and enough interest in many of the topics covered), to recognize that this is a beautiful and brilliant work which will give me and other readers years of additional pleasure. I say "additional" because I have been tracking Professor Cvitanovic's web book, from which this print originates, for a long time now and the contents of this work are not new to me.

Take note that this is not a textbook or even a standard reference of any sort and it makes no concessions whatsoever to lack of prior knowledge. It is primarily a highly technical research monograph about problem solving. Each chapter launches headfirst into its subject matter without offering any but the most cursory introduction. The reader is expected to understand the nomenclature, the context of the material and be familiar with the mathematics and physics dealt with. But even with this, the amazing clarity of Professor Cvitanovic's writing shines through. In contrast to the dense and murky scribblings of many (I might even suggest, most) texts at this level, the writing in this book as well as the flow of logic, the layout and everything else which matters is breathtakingly simple and, may I say, beautiful. The work deserves 10 stars out of 5. (I'm still working on the mathematics of that!)

I only wish that the good professor would see his way clear to publishing in hard cover his other web book, ChaosBook.pdf, which is an equally elegant and valuable work and which aligns much better with material that I am very familiar with. Perhaps one day...

I strongly urge all interested readers to purchase this book in hard cover, even if they have the web book version. This is not only for the considerable value of the book itself, but also as a way of showing appreciation for the remarkable generosity and altruism of the author in making the fruits of years of hard labor available for free.

Somewhat disappointed
By L. Razoumov
I bought this book because I needed a modern treatise on Group Theory and because I would like to plug in some holes in my knowledge of it. Originally I gave it 4 stars rating but after reading it for a month I am changing it to 3 stars.

PROS:
(1) Very nice uniform and modern approach to group theory based on projection operators.
(3) Well structured presentation

CONS:
(1) Book is short counting only 273 pages. Applications are covered rather lightly. I wish the book was twice the size with second half devoted to gory details with applications in physics, geometry, etc.
(2) Book is terse and intense. It is assumed that a reader knows Linear Algebra very well including spectral theory. Paul Halmos "Final Dimensional Vector Spaces" should help there. I guess it is also implied that a reader has been exposed to group theory already.
(3) The book is not a text book, it is a monograph on the subject.
(4) Diagrammatic tools used, aka "birdtracks", are not very useful at least to me. I find myself constantly rewriting the birdtracks diagrams back into tensor notations. This is in contrast with Feynman diagrams that I use and love.

Overall I gave it 3 (three) stars. It definitely gave me food for thought but I learned little new from it.

Jung on Evil, by C. G. Jung

Well-known for his articulation of the "shadow side" of human individuality and culture, C. G. Jung wrote a great deal about the question of evil throughout his life and in scattered places in his work. In this book his position is pieced together from many sources. In his early work on the unconscious, for instance, he considered the role of evil in the mental processes of the severely disturbed. Later, he viewed the question of moral choice within the framework of his ideas about archetypes and discussions about moral choices, conscience, and the continual ethical reflection that is necessary for all of us. The material here includes letters to Freud and Father Victor White and selections from his writings ranging from his Answer to Job to his travel piece on North Africa.

An excellent introduction to Jung's thought in his own words
By A Customer
This is an excellent introduction to a central area in Jung's thought Evil, the Shadow Side and its integration with the rest of the personality.
The selections from Jung's writings are excellent and there are extensive explanatory footnotes from the editor.
Jung will convince you that those who supress their shadow side soon see it in others and that one's shadow side has to be accepted not denied.
The book contains extensive selections from Answer to Job as well as hard to obtain Jung writings (unless you want to shell out a thousand dollars for his Collected Works).
Throught the book, Jung's compassion, vast erudition, and many and varied insights shine through.

Dark

a lesser known work by the master that explores the darkest elements of the human experience.
Elaine Pagels is the only one I can think of who comes close to the wisdom of Jung on this particular subject.
A classic, profound exploration of the dark side.

Fascinating to participate in Jung's explanations through his essays and letters about how the shadow influences our culture and threatens the "Truths" of the Church.

Shelleyan Eros: The Rhetoric of Romantic Love (Princeton Legacy Library), by William A. Ulmer

In this work William Ulmer boldly advances our understanding of Shelley's concept of love by exploring eros as a figure for the poet's political and artistic aspirations. Applying a combination of deconstructive, historicist, and psychoanalytic approaches to six major poems, Ulmer follows the logic of the writing's rhetoric of love by tracing links between such elements as imagination, eros, metaphor, allegory, mirroring, repetition, death, and narcissism. Ulmer takes the mutual desire of self and antitype as a paradigm for rhetorical and social relations throughout Shelley and, in a significant departure from critical consensus, argues that his poetics were predominantly idealist.

Ulmer demonstrates how the idealism of Shelleyan eros centers on a symbiosis of contraries organized as a dialectical variation of metaphor. In so doing, he contends that this idealism is both a rhetorical construct and revolutionary agency, and traces the failure of Shelley's visionary humanism to the gradual emergence of contradictions latent in his idealism. What emerges are new readings of individual texts and a reconsideration of the poet's imaginative development.

The Heresy of Self-Love
By cortezhill
Originally published in 1968 and reissued now with a new preface and conclusion, this work explores versions of Narcissus that have powerfully shaped the attitudes of our culture. Ranging from the Gnostics of the second century A.D. through mediaeval mysticism, courtly love, Tristan and Isolde, Skakespeare's Sonnets, Milton, Descartes, Spinoza, and Rousseau' to Kierkegaard, Herman Melville, Boudelaire, de Tocqueville, Marx, and the contemporary world, Paul Zweig atempts to dramatize and clarify this experience to self-cultivation and self-exaltation.

Full of reversals of meaning
By epic phlegm Hooha
I have owned this book for a long time. I do not use it as a reference on the large number of thinkers it covers because the kind of reversal of meaning which is a standard part of each analysis is murky in my mind. For an example, consider a few lines from a quotation of Alfred North Whitehead's book, Science and the Modern World:

bodies are perceived as with qualities . . .
which in fact are purely the offspring of the mind.
Nature is a dull affair,
soundless,
scentless,
colorless;
merely the hurrying of material,
endlessly,
meaninglessly.

Science tries to analyze nature in a manner which "became not only dull and meaningless, it became terrifying." Paul Zweig dwells in "The anxiety produced by such conflicting attitudes characterized the intellectual life of the century. Images of chaos and disintegration lay close to the surface of thought, as in Donne's Anniversary Poems or Shakespeare's Troilus."

It is possible to be amused at what has been achieved in ways that can be mined for ludicrous entertainment. Quoting Donne:

Every man alone thinkes he has got . . .

Evil Incarnate: Rumors of Demonic Conspiracy and Satanic Abuse in History, by David Frankfurter

In the 1980s, America was gripped by widespread panics about Satanic cults. Conspiracy theories abounded about groups who were allegedly abusing children in day-care centers, impregnating girls for infant sacrifice, brainwashing adults, and even controlling the highest levels of government. As historian of religions David Frankfurter listened to these sinister theories, it occurred to him how strikingly similar they were to those that swept parts of the early Christian world, early modern Europe, and postcolonial Africa. He began to investigate the social and psychological patterns that give rise to these myths. Thus was born Evil Incarnate, a riveting analysis of the mythology of evilconspiracy.

The first work to provide an in-depth analysis of the topic, the book uses anthropology, the history of religion, sociology, and psychoanalytic theory, to answer the questions "What causes people collectively to envision evil and seek to exterminate it?" and "Why does the representation of evil recur in such typical patterns?"

Frankfurter guides the reader through such diverse subjects as witch-hunting, the origins of demonology, cannibalism, and the rumors of Jewish ritual murder, demonstrating how societies have long expanded upon their fears of such atrocities to address a collective anxiety. Thus, he maintains, panics over modern-day infant sacrifice are really not so different from rumors about early Christians engaging in infant feasts during the second and third centuries in Rome.

In Evil Incarnate, Frankfurter deepens historical awareness that stories of Satanic atrocities are both inventions of the mind and perennial phenomena, not authentic criminal events. True evil, as he so artfully demonstrates, is not something organized and corrupting, but rather a social construction that inspires people to brutal acts in the name of moral order.

From Publishers Weekly
From the Salem witch trials in 1692 to the alleged satanic ritual abuse of children in day care centers in California in the 1980s, individuals have sought to restore moral order by rooting out what they regard as evil conspiracies. In a thought-provoking if sometimes pedantic study, University of New Hampshire historian Frankfurter draws on religion, sociology and anthropology to uncover the reasons that societies publicly raise cries of demonic conspiracies to explain various social evils. During the Salem witch trials, for example, the fascination with and the terror of the mysterious Witches' Sabbat gave rise to a cadre of so-called experts who claimed to judge accurately the behavior of a witch. Both the experts and the defendants performed their roles in the social ritual of identifying and persecuting the accused. Frankfurter convincingly demonstrates that demonic conspiracies and satanic ritual abuse are simply myths of evil conspiracies that provide societies an excuse for bullying those who are already considered suspect. He observes trenchantly that those seeking to purge demonic conspiracies have done more violence than the devotees of those so-called evil groups. Frankfurter's conclusions will likely be hotly contested, especially among those who claim to have been ritually abused, but his judicious insights about the nature of evil in our world provide thoughtful glimpses at the ways societies demonize the Other. Review
Winner of the 2007 Award of Excellence in the Study of Religion, Analytical-Descriptive Studies category, American Academy of Religion

"Mr. Frankfurter . . . shows just how similar stories about evil have been. . . . [E]vil recurs in predictably familiar form. . . . Mr. Frankfurter outlines these repeated elements with illuminating clarity and wide-ranging learning. . . . Using the term evil, he argues, prevents us from understanding context and cause; it places something beyond the human and that's when trouble starts. . . . But when the word is applied to an act, we know just precisely what it means: There is no human excuse."--Edward Rothstein, The New York Times

"In a thought-provoking . . . study . . . Frankfurter draws on religion, sociology and anthropology to uncover the reasons that societies publicly raise cries of demonic conspiracies to explain various social evils. . . . Frankfurter convincingly demonstrates that demonic conspiracies and satanic ritual abuse bare simply myths of evil conspiracies that provide societies an excuse for bullying those who are already considered suspect. He observes trenchantly that those seeking to purge demonic conspiracies have done more violence than the devotees of those so-called evil groups. . . . [H]is judicious insights about the nature of evil in our world provide thoughtful glimpses at the ways societies demonize the Other."--Publishers Weekly

"[A] fascinating, even gripping, study. . . . [It] merits widespread attention and careful study."--Dale B. Martin, Church History

"[A] brilliant, if terrifying, study."--Dennis P. Quinn, Religious Studies Review

"Frankfurter explores the social phenomenon of belief in evil conspiracy throughout Western history from the second century C.E. to the very recent past. . . . Evil Incarnate quite successfully does what it claims to do, namely explore a social phenomenon, the way in which a certain kind of myth has functioned in different historical circumstances to produce social cohesion and to provide a medium for thinking about danger, inversion and otherness. . . . Evil Incarnate also provides scholars with a wide range of interesting avenues for further study."--Heidi Marx-Wolf, Bryn Mawr Classical Review

"Interpreting and explaining stories and activities, Frankfurter takes us far away and long ago. He also takes the reader through a lot of different ground with regard to the subjects of analysis, and thus he produces and uses many theoretical perspectives.... It does, however, make for fascinating reading.... In addition to his chapter on 'rites of evil,' I was particularly taken with his ritual analysis of the performance of evil."--Asbjorn Dyrendal, Numen

"This meticulously researched and clearly argued book questions the reality of evil and will be welcomed by those, including myself, who join David Frankfurter in casting doubt upon the meaning of this dangerous and destructive idea."--Phillip Cole, Journal of Religion

"Frankfurter has written an excellent account of how panics about Satanism have periodically erupted in Europe, North America, and postcolonial Africa. He pulls no punches in concluding that 'no evidence has ever been found to verify the atrocities as historical events.' The terrible irony that emerges from Frankfurter's work is that 'the real atrocities of history seem to take place not in the perverse ceremonies of some evil cult but rather in the course of purging such cults from the world."--Richard J. McNally, PhycCRITIQUES

"Frankfurter's book, Evil Incarnate, is a scholarly, interdisciplinary work grounded in meticulous research. . . . What is riveting, here, is the way the myth of evil incarnate takes on new shapes with the arrival of new cultural collisions. What is exciting is his non-reductive causal approach, and the fluid, multi-layered perspectives from which he engages his topic."--Sue Grand, Psychoanalysis, Culture & Society

"This is indeed a thought-provoking study and is strongly recommended for students of religion, culture and society. The discourses of evil are real in all our lives and understanding the dynamics that propagate them and turn them into unspeakable violence can liberate people and assist humanity in the journey towards peace and integration."--Dr. Rodney Moss, Studia Historiae Ecclesiasticae

"This book raises many questions and provides some answers in attempting to elucidate the process of demonisation."--Michaela Valente, Journal of the Ecclesiastical History

From the Back Cover

"David Frankfurter's valuable, well-written study takes us to the far reaches of demonology. In documenting the harm done by labeling others evil, he poses a challenge to those of us who believe, however regretfully, in the necessity of the concept."--Robert Jay Lifton, author of The Nazi Doctors and The Genocidal Mentality

"David Frankfurter has taken a sensationalist topic and given it a serious, sober, and thoroughly enlightening treatment. At the heart of moral panics--witch crazes, red scares, rumors of Satanic ritual abuse, and others--he perceives not evil as an entity or sinister force, but rather a discourse of evil that draws on old traditions and common fantasies to stimulate horror, shock, and also prurient pleasure. Repeatedly, this volatile mix proves capable of inflaming passions and spawning violent campaigns whose excesses all too predictably fall on society's most marginal, and therefore most vulnerable, members. Drawing on a great many examples and much prior research, he makes a strong--and profoundly moral--argument."--Bruce Lincoln, University of Chicago

"David Frankfurter's valuable, well-written study takes us to the far reaches of demonology. In documenting the harm done by labeling others evil, he poses a challenge to those of us who believe, however regretfully, in the necessity of the concept."--Robert Jay Lifton, M.D., Distinguished Professor Emeritus, City University of New York

"Challenging the idea of evil being a reality beyond human comprehension, David Frankfurter's sharp and original analysis explores how this very idea produces a terrifying, unsettling reality of its own. The great merit of this elegantly written, substantial book is that it moves us beyond a rather particularistic attitude toward separate, locally bounded cases and shows that there is a system in the variegated realm of evil."--Birgit Meyer, Free University Amsterdam

"A significant contribution to several fields including comparative religions, ancient and contemporary religious history, and even literary criticism. Frankfurter's approach--looking at evil not as some force or essence but as a discourse--is highly original."--Hugh Urban, Ohio State University

"Engrossing and well-informed, Evil Incarnate presents a cornucopia of amazing material in lucid prose, cogently organized and constructed into an engaging argument. Few authors have the range, the vision, and the boldness to break through the disciplinary and chronological boundaries to bring off a book like this."--Charles Stewart, University College London

Very important, but very difficult
By Stefan Isaksson
I have this particular fear that always makes itself known to me when I'm reading (and reviewing) a scholarly book; especially when the book in question is an informative quality work with analyses that could have prevented immense amounts of human pain and suffering had they only been available to more people. I simply fear that the book is too complicated, written in a much too complex academic language for the common reader to understand. I'm not saying I myself understand everything I read - sometimes I don't even understand half of it - but if the books is about anthropology, then obviously I have a better chance of understanding it than someone lacking a degree in this particular subject.

Evil Incarnate is one of these books that has a much-needed dose of reason and common sense to offer but unfortunately is written in a way that'll probably result in not nearly enough people actually reading it. David Frankenfurter, Professor of Religious Studies and History at the University of New Hampshire, has written an equally complicated as disturbing book about man's view of evil and evil conspiracies. During the 1980s America, as well as Britain and certain other parts of Europe, became haunted by different "satanic panics"; outbreaks of large-scale mass-hysteria focusing on vicious Satanists abducting women and children in order to rape, ritualistically murder, and sometimes even consume them. Studying these events, Frankenfurter realized how these events had much in common with similar accounts throughout history. And thus the idea behind Evil Incarnate was born.

And in 2006, after more than a decade of painstaking research, the book was finally published. Using different disciplines (anthropology, the history of religion, sociology, and psychoanalytic theory, Frankenfurter offers a very complex report where questions such as why and how people collectively search and strike down on a perceived threatening evil, as well as why history repeats itself (and will continue to do so in the future) regarding the perception of evil and what this means, are answered. It's an interesting fact that not a single thread of evidence for all alleged "satanic panics" have ever been found, yet still these outbreaks of mass hysteria happens again and again. Why is that? Well, in Evil Incarnate you'll be given the answer(s).

Perhaps this sounds a little too complicated. And so it is. And that's why it's more or less impossible to come up with a complete summary in a short review. But on the other hand, something that must be pointed out is the very pleasant fact that in case you're lacking the necessary training to fully understand this book, not all hope is lost. Because the very last chapter, "Mobilizing against Evil", is a both short and easy-to-understand summary of Frankenfurter's conclusions, a summary that offers tons of extremely interesting facts despite being quite short.

Actually, this last chapter is so captivating that it makes every excuse not to buy the book pointless. Expensive knowledge, that's true, but also unbelievably important.

Very good, if somewhat scholarly, overview
By Robert Walker-Smith
This has the distinct, but not unpleasant, aroma of a doctoral dissertation reworked as popular nonfiction book. Given the

'sexiness' of the subject, the restraint of the author as he

describes the social construction of archetypes is nothing short

of remarkable.

For those of you with agendas, he maintains throughout that

demonic conspiracies and satanic abuse are, as the title indicates,

rumors, albeit persistent and highly detailed ones. In 200 C.E.,

Romans were reading about how Christians murdered children in

their detestable cult activities; in 1200, Christians read about

Jews doing the same things, and we're still reading essentially

the same accounts with different proper nouns.

His detailed analysis and reliance on a panoply of scholarly

references may induce glazed eyes in a general readership, but

anyone with a strong interest in the subject will find it

quite absorbing. Just make sure you're well rested and haven't

eaten recently.

A Chilling History
By S. Magliocco
Most human societies imagine there are enemies "out there" whose behavior embodies the very opposite of what is right and proper. When these ideas become institutionalized, it can lead to persecutions that target real people, with tragic consequences. David Frankfurter has written a brilliant, chilling history of how evil has been constructed in Western societies, from early medieval times to the present day. The book is organized thematically, taking the reader through the process of the formalization and institutionalization of these cultural projections, using historical examples as illustrations. Frankfurter shows how folk ideas about evil others become systematized through texts, creating a group of experts whose role is to recognize and root out evil. The evil others are imagined as participating in horrific, perverse rites that invert the norms and values (and often the religious rituals) of mainstream society. As this collective fantasy grows and spreads, entire societies can mobilize against evil -- as happened in the European witch persecutions of the period 1350-1750. The tragedy is that there ARE no evil others -- the whole thing is a collective fantasy, and the persecutors themselves end up engaging in the very behavior they find so horrifying and objectionable in imagined others.

The examples in this book are primarily drawn from European and North American history -- the witch trials, conspiracy theories of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the Satanic panics of the 1980s. The underlying principles, however, are applicabble cross-culturally, wherever/ whenever folk ideas about evil others are systematized and institutionalized. I used this as a textbook in an upper-division seminar on witchcraft in anthropological perspective. The students really understood the mechanics of how these extreme othering processes work, and were able to apply them to a number of other socio-cultural contexts in their final papers and analyses.

More importantly, this book should be required reading for leaders and politicians of all stripes, as well as for any educated person. If we were more aware of the perniciousness of the discourse of evil, perhaps we would be less quick to impute it to others, and less likely to repeat cycles of violence and persecution.
