Using a wealth of unique survey and historical data, Campbell shows how the development of Social Security helped transform seniors from the most beleaguered to the most politically active age group. Thus empowered, seniors actively defend their programs from proposed threats, shaping policy outcomes. The participatory effects are strongest for low-income seniors, who are most dependent on Social Security. The program thus reduces political inequality within the senior population--a laudable effect--while increasing inequality between seniors and younger citizens.

A brief look across policies shows that program effects are not always positive. Welfare recipients are even less participatory than their modest socioeconomic backgrounds would imply, because of the demeaning and disenfranchising process of proving eligibility. Campbell concludes that program design profoundly shapes the nature of democratic citizenship. And proposed policies--such as Social Security privatization--must be evaluated for both their economic and political effects, because the very quality of democratic government is influenced by the kinds of policies it chooses.

The credo of Israeli's leading judicial figure

Aharon Barak recently retired from the position of Chief Justice of the Israeli Supreme Court. In this position he moved the Court to a more activist role than it had played in the past. And his critics charge him with having impinged upon the powers of both Executive and Legislative branches. Barak of course rejects these charges and maintains that one of the most important functions of the Judiciary in a Democracy is to preserve a separation of Powers.
Barak in this book speaks over and over again about the importance of 'objectivity' and 'neutrality' in judicial decision- making. But his major thrust is in explaining how he believes the Judicial branch must work both to preserve a Democracy's fundamental Constitutional values, and at the same time respond to social change in an appropriate way. The Law as he understands it is an ongoing developing system which must be in tune with the fundamental transformations a Society is undergoing.
Again Barak has been fiercely attacked by both sides of the poltiical spectrum in Israel. At the same time he has been applauded internationally as one of the finest judicial minds working today.
My own personal bias is with those who feel the Israeli Supreme Court has in the past few years gone beyond its own constitutional authority. I would fault it for not upholding certain fundamental rights , for instance freedom of worship in regard to Jewish Prayer on the Temple Mount.
But I also realize what Barak here writes frequently about the Judge's dilemna of being under conflicting imperatives, of needing to weighh for instance the right of a group for freedom of worship, against considerations of State Security. Again I have been time and again disappointed by Barak's rulings on many cases but do understand that his judgments are never taken out of narrow prejudice(Something he writes about as clearly forbidden to judges) but rather out of his own complex judgment clearly rooted in fundamental values.
Barak talks about human rights and civil rights as important elements in judicial consideration.
The question of the true value of his legacy to the future of Israeli democracy is one which will continue to be debated in the years ahead. But the value of this present work as clear expression of his own judicial philosophy and faith is undeniable.

Thoughtful book from Israel's foremost judicial authority

The role of a judge in a democracy is one of Barak's favourite topics. He wrote and lectured on this subject many times, and in this book he compiled the main arguments, the result of years of careful thinking and of practicing law at the Israel Supreme Court.

Israel does not have a constitution or a Bill of Rights to defend basic rights and freedoms. Israel is a young democracy, poorly governed; it is riddled with corruption, and its existence has been under constant threat. You cannot really expect a country to be "normal" when once in a while it fights a war, and since 1987, with small intervals, it is subjected to constant terror attacks. The Supreme Court, under the leadership of Aharon Barak, was asked many times to interfere and to mete out justice to defend basic human rights. All the hot potatoes that no one else could not or did not wish to resolve came before the Court to decide. I often spoke with Justices of the Court who told me that they would rather not deal with those problematic, heated issues, but they had no other choice. Someone had to do the job, and in Israel, this "someone" is the High Court of Justice. The situation may change once Israel will be able to agree on a written constitution. Presently, Israel and the Palestinians living under Israeli occupation need to rely on the Court to find counsel and help in sorting grievances vis-à-vis the government, the army, and administration. Professor Barak, Israel's leading legal scholar, explains this delicate role, its challenges and rational, in this thoughtful book.

The Judge Who Destroyed Democracy would be more Apt

I am appalled at the egregious mis-use above of a complimentary sentence from Judge Richard Posner's blistering review of both Aharon Barak's book and his ideology and behavior on the Court in The New Republic [...].

No one, not Judge Posner and certainly not I, disagrees that Aharon Barak is a very bright man; furthermore, his effective imposition of his own left-wing "politically correct" Weltanschauung on the Israeli public and its democratically elected representatives would undoubtedly earn him the undying admiration of the left-wing Norwegians who choose the recipients of the Nobel prize. Thus, as Posner wrote, were there a Nobel prize in law, Barak would likely be an early recipient.

And yet Posner entitles his review of this book "Enlightened Despot" for a very good reason, as is evident by reading the entire review. I cannot describe Barak's usurpation of power from the elected legislative branch nearly as well as Posner, and refer all to his article. But as a US-trained attorney admitted to both the New York and Israeli bar associations, I can't agree strongly enough with Judge Posner's conclusions that -- absent any justification under law or precedent in Israel or, to my knowledge, elsewhere, and absent a formal constitution, Judge Barak decided that we less enlightened citizens of Israel would henceforth be subject to HIS "rule of law" -- i.e., the vicissitudes of what he and the colleagues he picked and formed in his image deem to be "reasonable" in a particular case at a particular time. I.e., Barak subjected duly passed laws and administrative decisions not merely to the "reasonable man" test, but the "reasonable enlightened man" test as determined in the sole discretion of Aharon Barak and his fellow Ivory Tower dwelling, self-perpetuating Supreme Court Justices.

And democracy be damned.

If you want to know more about Beethoven the two volumes by Thayer and edited by Forbes are a must

Since Alexander Thayer (a Harvard alum) published his three volume biography of Beethoven over a period of twenty-one years from 1866 -87 it has been the bedrock of information about Beethoven's life and work. It has also become a model for other musicologists and biographers. Obviously, more came to light over the next hundred years and the work was edited and reworked by Elliot Forbes (another Harvard alum and professor of music (but from a time before a Ph.D. was required)).

Forbes' "Thayer's Life of Beethoven" was published in 1964 in two volumes. (Does the name Ruth's Chris Steakhouse come to mind?) Prof. Forbes died in January of 2006 at 88 years of age. For awhile the two volumes were combined, but they are now separated. You simply must have them both. This first volume covers Beethoven's origins through 1814. The second volume from 1815 through his death in 1827 with several appendices that cover his estate, speculations about his various illnesses, lists of his works, publications of his works immediately following his death, preparations for a first biography, and so forth.

The book is organized chronologically and provides a well-documented presentation of Beethoven's activities that year whether performing, composing, or personal. It provides some speculation about certain events, but always identifies it as such. At the end of each chapter it lists the works composed that year and the works published that year.

Very much worth having. Just remember that you have to buy BOTH Part I and Part II to get the whole biography.

please clarify, amazon.

Sorry but I can't find anywhere else to write this!

The Princeton University Press website states that, for this paperback edition, volume 1 is 632 pages and volume 2 is 542 pages. [...]

But, Amazon states on this page that this volume 1 alone is 1139 pages, which suggests that the two volumes have been combined into one book. Have they? The matter is made even less clear by the fact that nowhere on Amazon is volume 2 of the Princeton paperback edition available. You can only find volume 2 in the older 1967 and earlier versions.

Someone needs to straighten this out. Assuming the Princeton website is correct and Amazon has made the mistake, can Amazon just offer volumes 1 and 2 in paperback as a discounted set? Some description of the difference between the two volumes would also be much appreciated.

I'm a little surprised that the most important book retailer appears to have bungled the most important book about the most important musician.

Exhaustive Biography

Everything you always wanted to know about Beethoven. That's what is in Thayer's biography. This is a two volume set, so there is a lot of reading. From a short history of Beethoven's family on to the composer's demise, there is not a stone that is left uncovered.
This is a reprint, the original being written I believe at the turn of the last century. Doubtless there has been more info about Beethoven uncovered since then, but if you are a true Beethovenite, this biography is essential reading. Recommended, along with Vol. 2!

Grade 7 Up-Napoli has created two stories in this intriguing novel. One is the creation of a plausible explanation for the brief mentions of Mary Magdalene in the New Testament. The second is that same tale seen as a story of a young woman who finds herself an outsider. The narrative is rich with modern issues of gender, disability, violence against women, and spirituality. Miriam describes her life from age 10 to 16 when she is deeply troubled by the occurrence of "fits," which over the years come upon her 7 times. She is driven in her loneliness to explore nature and to learn the songs and poetry of her faith. Her closest relationship is with severely disabled Abraham. As teenagers, the two become lovers, briefly, before he dies. Pregnant, Miriam withdraws into herself until, after being raped, she loses the child and is forced to seek shelter elsewhere. In her travels, she hears of the great healer Joshua, or Jesus. At the end of the tale she finds him; she is cured of the seven devils and becomes a follower of the Master. Knowledge of ancient Hebrew culture, an ability to express the feelings and anguish of an intense young woman, and skillful weaving of plot and character create a gripping novel that is hard to put down. The necessity of finding an ending compatible with the Biblical scene in which Mary Magdalene first appears does in the end constrain a plot that is otherwise highly inventive and complex. Napoli has taken up a challenging and possibly controversial topic and created an interesting book that should lead readers to look further into both Old and New Testament histories.

Gr. 9^-12. Napoli has made a career of telling familiar stories from a fresh perspective. In this work, she fashions a history for a familiar name, whose story has been untold. With richness of detail and depth of feeling, Napoli introduces the biblical figure Mary Magdalene, who is hardly mentioned in the New Testament, and there are questions over which biblical episodes refer to her. Here, Miriam is the daughter of a well-to-do Magdala widower whose household includes a servant and her crippled son. Because of his physical affliction, the village assumes Abraham is an idiot as well, but Miriam knows him as the bright, sweet young man who teaches her to read and to sing the Song of Songs. When she begins to suffer fits, he tells her that she is pure, not demon ridden as she fears. Eventually, they become lovers, but Abraham dies, and the child Miriam is carrying, dies when she is raped. Miriam, who has always been considered odd, moves away to live with relatives, until they observe her suffering a fit; then she goes alone into the Judean wilderness, where she tries to make sense of her life. That happens when she meets the healer Joshua, and that's where the book ends. Lyrical writing and layered characterizations more than make up for some small inconsistencies in the plot, but the very elegance of the story may restrict the audience. Napoli's inclusion of issues of the ancient world--the treatment of women and the infirm, religious practices, societal pressures--also means the book demands a reader who can both comprehend philosophical ideas and appreciate nuance to truly recognize all the story has to offer. Song of the Magdalene -Donna Jo Napoli This was a book of very good quality, bordering on excellence. I believe this book could be read at the grade seven or eight level, although the subject matter is more appropriate for grades nine to eleven. This book would appeal to most regular readers, but not all.
The timeline of the story is around 05 AD to 25 AD. Set in what is now Israel, this book has vivid scenes in mostly the town Magdala, and also various other places along the River Jordan. This book is an excellent reference to get a view of life in this time and place. Song of the Magdalene is a fictional story of the young Mary Magdalene. Her family a quite respected in her village, and they are not poor, to say the least. Miriam lives with her father, her servant friend Hannah and Hannah's paraplegic son Abraham. At the age of ten she leads a rather normal life until the occurrence of her first fit.(seizure) In her culture and religion having a physical affliction is seen as evil and a fit represents an evil sprit entering your body. Miriam is a smart girl; because of this she knows that she must not let anyone find out about her fits, or she will be labeled as impure and be a social disgrace. To hide she spends her days in the valleys and forests, when she should be doing chores, preparing herself to be a wife. Eventually Abraham, who is always stuck at home, convinces Miriam to bring him along on her excursions. Because he joins her, when she has her second fit he finds out about them, he assures her neither of them are evil. As they become closer Abraham teaches Miriam to sing the Song of Songs and to read the torah, two skills only men regularly have. They grow very close and an incident soon after sends Miriam's world spinning. All her secrets torn open, all her lies exposed. She is sent away. After much searching she finds herself, and the story ends where the fact from the bible begins, as Miriam meets Jesus. This book is very factual and the religious aspects of it are quite realistic. It is interesting to compare the social roles of men and women portrayed in this book to those of today, it sure has changed. I would consider this book quite an easy read with mature subject matter, which is not the best combination. Although Overall I would consider this book extremely good in all aspects including writing, historical facts, reality and to top it all off an adventurous story line.

This historical fiction book is a story of a 1st century Jewsih girl, Miriam, and the story is told through her eyes, of her life from age 10-18. Miriam lived with her father and their maid Hannah along with Hannah's handicapped and socially outcasted son. Over the years, Miriam and Abraham's love develops much to the dismay of society. Miriam realizes that she is pregnant, but Abraham dies of an illness before their child is born. Miriam is forced to become a pariah after she is raped and her child is lost, and she embarks on a journey to find reknwon Jochanan, a man who takes in social outcasts. What I really enjoyed about this book was the author's ability to take a Bibilical character and create a fictional story about her life as well as incorporating historical facts. Also, the ending was such that it made the entire story beleivable. One negative factor of this story is that the first half is extremely boring; it focuses more on the setting rather than the plot.

Overall, the final result of this book was satisfying and I would recommend this novel to anyone who would enjoy learning about 1st century Jewish culture.

Beautiful

i'm 17 yrs old and truthfully know nothing about world history. I have common sense, and i sort of rely on that alone.

This book, at first seemed something boring, and i checked it out of the school library because of the love i bear for most of this author's books, and so far she hasn't let me down.

Amist the third or fourth chapter, my attention was fully caught in the swirls of the plot and her twisted world. Along with homework, projects and what not; i was able to finish the book by the begining of the next day. I am a very picky reader and if a book is to my dislike,i stop reading it and move on. This book wrapped me up in many emotions and drove me insane throught the night.

I LOVED IT.

I highly do recommend this book. Don't let the time and place cause you to drift away. The characters, plot and the reality of her world was very moving and excellent. I think i cried through the entire thing. And i'm talking about heavy sobs. At the end i felt conent and happy i gave the book a chance.

PLEASE READ IT!!!

Here Kirk Savage shows how the greatest era of monument building in American history arose amidst struggles over race, gender, and collective memory. As men and women North and South fought to define the war's legacy in monumental art, they reshaped the cultural landscape of American nationalism.

At the same time that the Civil War challenged the nation to reexamine the meaning of freedom, Americans began to erect public monuments as never before. Savage studies this extraordinary moment in American history when a new interracial order seemed to be on the horizon, and when public sculptors tried to bring that new order into concrete form. Looking at monuments built and unbuilt, Savage shows how an old image of black slavery was perpetuated while a new image of the common white soldier was launched in public space. Faced with the challenge of Reconstruction, the nation ultimately recast itself in the mold of the ordinary white man.

Standing Soldiers, Kneeling Slaves is a history of race in America as seen through the depiction of slavery in sculptures and monuments. Kirk Savage, an assistant professor of art history at the University of Pittsburgh, shows that blacks were seldom depicted in sculpture until after the Civil War, at which time there was a nationwide impetus to commemorate the end of the war and emancipation. Savage considers these statues and monuments to be a lost opportunity: instead of representing a new sense of race in America, the statues featured old stereotypes, the "kneeling slaves" of the title. Far more common were statues featuring ordinary soldiers. The great irony, Savage argues in this thought-provoking book, is that black soldiers--who "were most clearly representative of a national purpose," the fight for equality--were seldom represented in celebratory monuments.
