What Price the Moral High Ground?: How to Succeed without Selling Your Soul, by Robert H. Frank

Financial disasters--and stories of the greedy bankers who precipitated them--seem to underscore the idea that self-interest will always trump concerns for the greater good. Indeed, this idea is supported by the prevailing theories in both economics and evolutionary biology. But is it valid?

In What Price the Moral High Ground?, economist and social critic Robert Frank challenges the notion that doing well is accomplished only at the expense of doing good. Frank explores exciting new work in economics, psychology, and biology to argue that honest individuals often succeed, even in highly competitive environments, because their commitment to principle makes them more attractive as trading partners.

Drawing on research he has conducted and published over the past decade, Frank challenges the familiar homo economicus stereotype by describing how people create bonds that sustain cooperation in one-shot prisoner's dilemmas. He goes on to describe how people often choose modestly paid positions in the public and nonprofit sectors over comparable, higher-paying jobs in the for-profit sector; how studying economics appears to inhibit cooperation; how social norms often deter opportunistic behavior; how a given charitable organization manages to appeal to donors with seemingly incompatible motives; how concerns about status and fairness affect salaries in organizations; and how socially responsible firms often prosper despite the higher costs associated with their business practices.

Frank's arguments have important implications for the conduct of leaders in private as well as public life. Tossing aside the model of the self-interested homo economicus, Frank provides a tool for understanding how to better structure organizations, public policies, and even our own lives.

Review
"This book is short, accessible and thought-provoking. . . . Frank draws heavily from game theory and evolutionary biology to explain why do-gooders work for less and firms that don't squeeze suppliers and cheat customers profit over the long run."--Washington Post

"Moral behavior is not irrational . . . Frank insists. The challenge is to define self-interest in a manner capacious enough to accommodate the real motives for people's choices. Frank does this with a mixture of Darwinian science, psychology, and flexible common sense."--Laura Secor, Boston Globe

"What Price the Moral High Ground? Is wide-ranging and well-written."--John J. DiIulio, Jr., The Weekly Standard

"[Frank's] vision is one that allows people to strive to meet their chosen goals and promotes the common good in an ordered cosmos--which is exactly where many of us want to live."--Merrill Matthews, Business Economics

From the Inside Flap
"I loved this book. It makes sense of key economic behaviors not well explained by other models, through a combination of theory, examples, and clever experiments. Clearly written, it will be easily understood not only by economists but also noneconomists. Vintage Frank."--Shlomo Maital, author of Executive Economics

"Robert Frank takes us beyond the economic notion of rationality, pointing to the norms that guide people, their social status, and character, and make them seem nicer than economic theory would have them be. He adds an interesting twist to the story by showing that those who are subjected to theory may actually be less nice, less cooperative than others."--Arjo Klamer, editor of Conversations with Economists and The Value of Culture

Some snapshots of social preference research
By JJ vd Weele
Economist Robert Frank is a productive man who has the laudable habit of explaining insights of academic economics in understandable words for the general public. This book treats the spontaneous emergence of cooperative behavior amongst human beings, a fascinating topic which has been the focus of much research lately. Unfortunately, it is not one of Frank's best books. As a rather unbalanced collection of essays, it does not do justice to the sizeable literature on social preferences and cooperation.

The book consists of three parts. The first looks for the evolutionary roots of cooperative behavior. The main argument is that cooperation pays because cooperators are able to recognize each other in the population, so that they are not taken advantage of by opportunistic types. In the third chapter Frank builds an interesting evolutionary argument for the role of emotions. The second part discusses the social and economic relevance of cooperative tendencies. How much money are people willing to forego to satisfy their social preferences? The last part investigates how cooperative inclinations can be fostered. It investigates the impact of social norms on behavior, and the influence of the pervasive model of homo economicus.

The book is easy to read, written in an accessible style. Unfortunately, the book is not a comprehensive summary of research on cooperation. Rather, it takes a few snapshots of this research on which it elaborates. Perhaps not surprisingly, these snapshots are often the research papers of Frank himself. This is good for those who are interested in methodology: Frank has done his best to highlight controversial issues, as well as the theoretical tradeoffs that modelers of human behavior have to confront. However, it is not clear why the general reader would want to know the details of academic discussions about whether A's or B's model best explains a rather specific phenomenon. At the same time the book does not mention entire research agendas on trust and cooperation that have been pursued in the last decade. If one wants a book that does a more complete job you may want to look to "The Company of Strangers" by Paul Seabright.

Fit: An Architect's Manifesto, by Robert Geddes

Fit is a book about architecture and society that seeks to fundamentally change how architects and the public think about the task of design. Distinguished architect and urbanist Robert Geddes argues that buildings, landscapes, and cities should be designed to fit: fit the purpose, fit the place, fit future possibilities. Fit replaces old paradigms, such as form follows function, and less is more, by recognizing that the relationship between architecture and society is a true dialogue--dynamic, complex, and, if carried out with knowledge and skill, richly rewarding.

With a tip of the hat to John Dewey, Fit explores architecture as we experience it. Geddes starts with questions: Why do we design where we live and work? Why do we not just live in nature, or in chaos? Why does society care about architecture? Why does it really matter? Fit answers these questions through a fresh examination of the basic purposes and elements of architecture--beginning in nature, combining function and expression, and leaving a legacy of form.

Lively, charming, and gently persuasive, the book shows brilliant examples of fit: from Thomas Jefferson's University of Virginia and Louis Kahn's Exeter Library to contemporary triumphs such as the Apple Store on New York's Fifth Avenue, Chicago's Millennium Park, and Seattle's Pike Place.

Fit is a book for everyone, because we all live in constructions--buildings, landscapes, and, increasingly, cities. It provokes architects and planners, humanists and scientists, civic leaders and citizens to reconsider what is at stake in architecture--and why it delights us.

Review
"There are some startling and simple truths here that are definitely helpful to an educator."--Flora Samuel, Times Higher Education

"[B]oth poetic and pragmatic. . . . Fit's message transcends professional architecture practice: it should be given to everyone in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives."--Maxinne Rhea Leighton, eOCULUS

"The design of this book, combined with the concise and poetic text make it an immensely enjoyable read."--Andrew Molloy, LSE Review of Books

"The book is successful at explaining the concept of 'fit' and how we can go about making sure it is included in the design process. I agree that having a dialogue around this issue will improve the architectural landscape as it considers the impact building(s) will have years after being completed. . . . Geddes has inspired me to consider the symbiotic relationship humans have with architecture."--Isabelle Kim, Spacing

From the Back Cover

"In this elegant little book, mixing aphorism and example, Robert Geddes argues for the importance of 'making it fit' and shows us the many ways of doing this. His manifesto is both provocation and enlightenment."--Michael Walzer, Institute for Advanced Study

"Robert Geddes has written a lucid, perceptive, and wise book about the fundamental elements of architecture, including the basic needs that it addresses, as well as the wide range of architectural approaches and styles available to the designer and practitioner today. He does not, fortunately, propose easy solutions to the deep challenges facing contemporary architects and urban planners, but instead offers principles and considerations that can help them create works that can be 'fit' for their purposes, places, and times."--Neil Rudenstine, president emeritus, Harvard University

"Fit is a pleasure to read--lucid, wonderfully lively, and continuously interesting. Geddes's mode of arguing by quotation and illustration is very appealing, like talking with a great conversationalist with a well-stocked mind and library. And there is a real moral to the book's argument about what our architecture needs more of."--Alan Ryan, Princeton University and University of Oxford

"This is an enchanting book. Robert Geddes admirably makes the case for architecture as a social art in which function and aesthetics are complementary rather than mutually exclusive. The book provides an excellent primer for both makers and consumers of architecture--a checklist of issues to be addressed during the design process, and a lens through which to see and appreciate architecture."--Urs P. Gauchat, dean of the College of Architecture and Design, New Jersey Institute of Technology

About the Author
Robert Geddes is an architect, urbanist, and teacher. He is dean emeritus of the Princeton School of Architecture; Henry Luce Professor Emeritus of Architecture, Urbanism, and History at New York University; and a fellow of the New York Institute for the Humanities and the National Academy of Design. The American Institute of Architects honored his professional firm for its "design quality, respect for the environment, and social concern."

Simply informative
By Sidney G.
This book is basically a conceptual road map for architecture and why it exists as an art and a craft in our society. It's written very simply, which is really refreshing to read - instead of being weighed down and obfuscated by flowery language and grandiose ideas, there's something very grounded about Gedde's writing. He has ideas and concepts about architecture which he wants to get across, and does so in an efficient, but not textbook-like way. When reading it you can tell that his knowledge is profound enough to boil down really big architectural ideas, like the concept of "collection of places" and the influence of nature on buildings, into plain-and-simple terms that lay everything out very clearly. As a soon-to-be architecture student this book has been a great guide in reaffirming in concrete terms the ideas I had floating around abstractly in my head. I've learned a lot from this book, and I think anyone - architecture nerd or not - would benefit from the worldview they might gain with this book's knowledge of history and society. However, the irony of having a book about 'fit' having been designed in a narrow format that makes reading it less-than-comfortable should be noted. Was that really necessary? Regardless, this is a great book to add to someone's architectural theory collection, and a book worth lending to others.

Valuable Insights Packed in a Tiny Little Book
By Noah Fang
It might not be hard to imagine a short book about "manifesto" could contain a few "concept-defining" deduction or enlightment, while this one is packed with valuable insights and actually has an argument (with both the ideas and corresponding examples).

The point might not be new, but it's a pleasant read and can surely make you think. Recommended to anyone who doesn't hate architecture stuff.

Very insightful
By Alex C
I have not read the book entirely but I must say that what I have read so far is eye opening. I must also say that some parts can be rather boring but over all, very interesting. And as a landscape architecture student seeking professional status, this book has given me some insight on design.

Reliable Partners: How Democracies Have Made a Separate Peace, by Charles Lipson

Democracies often go to war but almost never against each other. Indeed, "the democratic peace" has become a catchphrase among scholars and even U.S. Presidents. But why do democracies avoid fighting each other? Reliable Partners offers the first systematic and definitive explanation. Examining decades of research and speculation on the subject and testing this against the history of relations between democracies over the last two centuries, Charles Lipson concludes that constitutional democracies have a "contracting advantage"--a unique ability to settle conflicts with each other by durable agreements. In so doing he forcefully counters realist claims that a regime's character is irrelevant to war and peace. Lipson argues that because democracies are confident their bargains will stick, they can negotiate effective settlements with each other rather than incur the great costs of war.

Why are democracies more reliable partners? Because their politics are uniquely open to outside scrutiny and facilitate long-term commitments. They cannot easily bluff, deceive, or launch surprise attacks. While this transparency weakens their bargaining position, it also makes their promises more credible--and more durable, for democracies are generally stable. Their leaders are constrained by constitutional rules, independent officials, and the political costs of abandoning public commitments. All this allows for solid bargains between democracies. When democracies contemplate breaking their agreements, their open debate gives partners advance notice and a chance to protect themselves. Hence agreements among democracies are less risky than those with nondemocratic states. Setting rigorous analysis in friendly, vigorous prose, Reliable Partners resolves longstanding questions about the democratic peace and highlights important new findings about democracies in world politics, from rivalries to alliances. Above all, it shows conclusively that democracies are uniquely adapted to seal enduring bargains with each other and thus avoid the blight of war.

Review
"[I]mportant and engagingly written. . . . If you want a book that takes theory seriously yet will engage students on fundamental aspects of international politics, this is one on a short shelf."--Bruce Russett, Perspectives on Politics

From the Inside Flap
"For the last quarter-century the question of whether democracies are inherently inclined to conduct peaceful foreign policies has been the most extensively studied and heatedly debated issue in the fields of political science and international relations. With Reliable Partners Charles Lipson has produced the definitive study of the question, which summarizes, synthesizes, and goes beyond everything else written about it."--Michael Mandelbaum, Senior Fellow, The Council on Foreign Relations, author of The Ideas That Conquered the World

"A crucial question for our future is the truth of the claim that democracies are unlikely to fight each other. After a careful examination of alternative explanations, Charles Lipson has produced an intriguing argument about the causation behind this correlation. It is an original and important work."--Joseph S. Nye, Dean, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University

"Scholars have long debated whether democracies fight each other. Charles Lipson persuasively closes that argument and explains how and why democracies are different. With verve and wit, he gathers a carefully crafted set of propositions like snowballs rolling down a hill until they strike like an avalanche with a fully constructed 'contracting theory.' Democracies avoid war with each other, Lipson demonstrates, because they have a unique capacity to bargain and keep their commitments. Reliable Partners is a lucid and compelling book for the experts and the general reader."--Robert A. Pastor, Vice President and Director of the Center for Democracy and Election Management, American University

"Comprehensive, impressively researched, and a pleasure to read, Reliable Partners is a major contribution and the best single book on the subject. Lipson breaks new ground in answering why the democratic peace exists. His work will become a major reference point for future scholarship in the field."--Robert J. Lieber, Georgetown University, editor of Eagle Rules: Foreign Policy and American Primacy in the Twenty-First Century

Good theory but not a page turner
By J. Schuler
Lipson lays out a compelling argument for the contracting advantage of democracies leading to more peaceful relations among them. Contrary to a previous review, he does present good reasons why elected leaders can't just toss everything their predecessors did out the window (e.g. constitutional constraints, reciprocality, etc.) and explains that, even when they manage to, the public debate has given other states fair warning to adjust policy. That said, the overall quality of the writing could have been a bit better, being on the dry, repetitive side, and he would have done well to get another proofreader. Just don't expect this to be one of those books you can't put down.

Agree to disagree
By John F. Daniel
I think the previous reviewer just has an ax to grind about democratic peace theory in general. I do not agree in everything "Good Time Charlie" Lipson says, but I do think that his argument is solid, original, and worth a closer look.

Free Trade Today, by Jagdish N. Bhagwati

Free trade, indeed economic globalization generally, is under siege. The conventional arguments for protectionism have been discredited but not banished. And free trade faces strong new challenges from a variety of groups, including environmentalists and human rights activists as well as traditional lobbies who wrap their agendas in the language of justice and rights. These groups, claiming a general interest and denouncing free trade as a special interest of corporations and other capitalist forces, have organized large and vocal protests in Seattle, Prague, and elsewhere.

Based on his acclaimed Stockholm lectures and picking up where his widely influential Protectionism left off, Jagdish Bhagwati applies critical insights from revolutionary developments in commercial policy theory--many his own--to show how the pursuit of social and environmental agendas can be creatively reconciled with the pursuit of free trade. Indeed, he argues that free trade, by raising living standards, can serve these agendas far better than can a descent into trade sanctions and restrictions.

After settling the score in favor of free trade, Professor Bhagwati considers alternative ways in which it can be pursued. Chiefly, he argues in support of multilateralism and advances a withering critique of recent bilateral and regional free trade agreements (including NAFTA) as preferential arrangements that introduce growing chaos into the world trading system. He also makes a strong case for "going it alone" on the road to trade liberalization and endorses the reemergence of unilateral liberalization at points around the globe.

Forcefully, elegantly, and clearly written for the public by one of the foremost economic thinkers of our day, this volume is not merely accessible but essential reading for anyone interested in economic policy or in the world economy.

Review
"A delight to read; and Bhagwati's irrepressible personality bubbles through on every page. . . . [A] ride that is worth the ticket."--Robert Lawrence, Financial Times

"Jagdish Bhagwati is a very distinguished writer, with a world reputation as a careful but passionate proponent of free trade."--Times Literary Supplement

"One of the best things about the book is that it confounds stereotypes. Mr. Bhagwati, it emerges clearly, is a liberal in both the old and new senses of the word: he is for free trade, but he is for ambitious social policies too."--The Economist

"The book is breezy and nontechnical in style, yet highly sophisticated in content. [Bhagwati] provides a spirited riposte to all critics, to whom he pays respect by taking them seriously. He then proceeds to demolish their positions, finding them in logical error, empirically unsupported, or reflecting valid concerns that are better addressed directly rather than indirectly by restricting trade, which would impose unnecessary costs."--Foreign Affairs

"Free Trade Today is short and thoroughly readable, summarizing the key argument in an easy, folksy manner."--Michael Brennan, Policy

"A presentation by a future Nobel Laureate."--Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

"Free Trade Today . . . is entertaining and scholarly and, of course, authoritative. . . . Bhagwati is magisterial, dealing succinctly with general theory and its application to current debates."--L. Alan Winters, International Finance

"A pleasure to read--unusually for an economist, Bhagwati writes with wit and verve."--Vijay Joshi and Robert Skidelsky, New York Review of Books

Review
Jagdish Bhagwati combines impressive theoretical skills with a rare talent for clear exposition. He has had a profound influence on trade policy thinking among scholars and practitioners. Once again he brings his formidable analytical gifts to bear in these lectures. They should be read by everybody who wants to understand the case for trade and why it sometimes seems so difficult to make that case. (Michael Moore, Director General, World Trade Organization )

From the Inside Flap

"Jagdish Bhagwati combines impressive theoretical skills with a rare talent for clear exposition. He has had a profound influence on trade policy thinking among scholars and practitioners. Once again he brings his formidable analytical gifts to bear in these lectures. They should be read by everybody who wants to understand the case for trade and why it sometimes seems so difficult to make that case."--Michael Moore, Director General, World Trade Organization

"Professor Bhagwati is our most powerful and persuasive advocate of free trade. In this book he does two important things: he punctures all the standard false arguments for protection, and he uses the modern theory of commercial policy to suggest how a balanced approach to trade and social policy might look. And all of this comes in a compact, lively, and readable package."--Robert M. Solow, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1987 Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences

"Trade liberalization in the second half of the twentieth century brought huge benefits, especially to those less-developed countries which seized the new opportunities. Now these gains are being threatened by 'Seattle-person,' the offspring of an alliance between forces of ignorance and special interests. Jagdish Bhagwati's courageous stand against this threat merits our admiration. His rigorous yet lively restatement of the case for free trade should be required reading for all participants in the public debate on globalization."--Avinash K. Dixit, Princeton University

"Bhagwati is the prime warrior for free trade. In this splendid book, he encapsulates all major arguments in favor of free trade and debunks many arguments against it in a lucid and entertaining style. The arguments are up to date, addressing all key issues of the last decade."--Elhanan Helpman, Harvard University and Tel Aviv University

"Jagdish Bhagwati is easily the most creative international trade theorist of his generation, whose work has changed fundamentally the way we now think about free trade and protection. He is also our leader in the fight for freer trade: his witty, graceful, and incisive op-eds and reviews in the leading magazines and newspapers worldwide and his public debates deliver unceasingly the coup de grace to the myriad critics of free trade. Free Trade Today, which brings under one rubric the deep insights from modern theory--much of it his own work--to refute these critics, is a tour de force."--Arvind Panagariya, University of Maryland and Chief Economist, Asian Development Bank

"With customary wit and insight, Jagdish Bhagwati demonstrates the relevance of the theory of commercial policy, in which he was the leading pioneer, to current trade policy debates. The analysis is sharp and pungent, and the writing a delight--a must read for anyone interested in trade policy!"--Douglas A. Irwin, Dartmouth College, author of Free Trade Under Fire and Against the Tide: An Intellectual History of Free Trade

Great Essays - Best If You Already Have Background
By Craig Matteson
Don't let this slim volume lead you to believe this is a book of light reading. The essays it contains are extremely valuable and packed tight with information, insight, and great thinking.
There are also many very valuable footnotes that can lead you to deeper reading on the subject of the current state of thinking on the very important topic of Free Trade.
Dr. Bhagwati is a stalwart of Free Trade and has the intellectual and verbal firepower to stand up for this very important concept and its role in relieving poverty around the world. He isn't a beautiful writer, but he certainly is effective and I am so glad to be able to have his writing and thinking available to me.
This book is a fine addition and should be read by those on both sides of this issue with an open mind. Dr. Bhagwati is one of those important thinkers that will benefit your own thinking even when you disagree with them because it will force you to sharpen your own thinking and force you to build better arguments.
One of the great parts of the first essay is when he takes us through the sequence of thought as arguments were put forward, successfully attacked and new models were built, attacked, and re-built until the present day. He is also very honest about the current weaknesses in present models and possible paths to pursue as a way to solve them. Just very valuable stuff.

Not that difficult a read.
By Meir Ben David
Why do so many people rate this as a difficult read? I thought it was a well written book. I learned a few things from it too. For example, it never occurred to me that free trade treaties (bilateral agreements) are not really free trade. Read that book and find out why. I did think that he was a bit biased in favor of a certain third world country a bit. However, I don't think it was intentional on his part.

A little technical but worth the plod
By Sutirtha Bagchi
The book is a compilation of three lectures delivered by Professor Bhagwati at the Stockholm School of Economics. Each of these, true to Prof. Bhagwati's trademark style, is strongly in favor of free trade. In his first lecture, he takes on those economists who have broken ranks with the free traders and presents economics arguments demonstrating why free trade is better. In his second lecture, he takes on the environmentalists and do-gooders of the world and again demonstrates why there is nothing about free trade that is inherently detrimental to the environment or to labor standards across the globe. Finally in his third lecture, he talks about how the dynamics of free trade is actually playing out, frequently in the political market place and how preferential trade agreements (PTAs) which are the rage of the day are actually a bane for free today because while PTAs reduce trade barriers for the member countries, they actually raise the trade barriers for others out of the PTAs and hence instead of a global free trade regime through WTO and GATT, we have a Pandora of PTAs that is an actual mess.

The key insight which I gained from one of the lectures was the following: Every time there is a market failure, what some people would shout is that free trade is no longer the best policy and hence should be disbanded. What Bhagwati and Ramaswami showed in a historical and seminal paper in the field of international trade was that, in case there is a distortion, the solution is not to disband free trade but to embrace policies that correct the distortion and once corrected, revert back to free trade. For instance, if the distortion is domestic, then a domestic tax-cum-subsidy policy targeting it will be appropriate and free trade can then be restored as the suitable first-best trade policy.

The book is somewhat more technical than his more popular book, In Defense of Globalization but that is understandable because this is intended for a different audience and has a different purpose in mind. Venture into it only if you remember some of your economics from ECON 101 and 201 or else you are better sticking with In Defense of Globalization.

Eighteen Upbuilding Discourses : Kierkegaard's Writings, Vol. 5, by Søren Kierkegaard

There is much to be learned philosophically from this volume, but philosophical instruction was not Kierkegaard's aim here, except in the broad sense of self-knowledge and deepened awareness. Indicating the intention of the discourses, the titles include "The Expectancy of Faith," "Love Will Hide a Multitude of Sins," "Strengthening in the Inner Being," "To Gain One's Soul in Patience," "Patience in Expectancy," and "Against Cowardliness."

In tone and substance these works are in accord with the concluding words of encouragement in Either/Or, which was paired with the first volume of discourses: "Ask yourself and keep on asking until you find the answer, for one may have known something many times, acknowledged it; one may have willed something many times, attempted it--and yet, only the deep inner motion, only the heart's indescribable emotion, only that will convince you that what you have acknowledged belongs to you, that no power can take it from you--for only the truth that builds up is truth for you."
