Remembering Inflation, by Brigitte Granville

Today's global economy, with most developed nations experiencing very low inflation, seems a world apart from the "Great Inflation" that spanned the late 1960s to early 1980s. Yet, in this book, Brigitte Granville makes the case that monetary economists and policymakers need to keep the lessons learned during that period very much in mind, lest we return to them by making the same mistakes we made in the past.

Granville details the advances in macroeconomic thinking that gave rise to the "Great Moderation"--a period of stable inflation and economic growth, which lasted from the mid-1980s through the most recent financial crisis. She makes the case that the central banks' management of monetary policy--hinging on expectations and credibility--brought about this period of stability, and traces the roots of this success back to the eighteenth-century foundations of modern monetary thought.

Tackling fundamental questions such as the causes of inflation and its relation to unemployment and growth, the natural rate of inflation hypothesis, the fiscal theory of the price level, and the proper goals of central banks, the book aims above all to demonstrate the dangers of forgetting the role of credibility in establishing sound monetary policy. With the lessons of the past firmly in mind, Granville presents stimulating ideas and proposals about inflation-targeting principles, which provide tools for present-day monetary authorities dealing with the forces of globalization, mercantilism, and reserve accumulation.

Review
"[A] highly informative, well-written volume."--Choice

"Granville presents stimulating ideas and proposals about inflation-targeting principles, which provide tools for present-day monetary authorities dealing with the forces of globalization, mercantilism, and reserve accumulation."--World Book Industry

"[A]ny economist with an interest in inflation and in the theory and practice of monetary policy more generally would do quite well to read carefully the excellent study that Brigitte Granville has given us."--Peter N. Ireland, Journal of Economic Literature

From the Back Cover

"Brigitte Granville has written a spirited and learned defense of how macroeconomic ideas can defeat inflation with sound monetary policy and inflation targeting. The success of these ideas is evident in persistently low inflationary expectations, which are now taken for granted. Yet Granville warns that monetary policy must not be overloaded because then its credibility may be undermined. Hers is a wonderfully and enlighteningly fresh look at inflation."--Anders Åslund, senior fellow, Peterson Institute for International Economics

"Granville recalls the inflation of the 1970s, which, she fears, is in danger of being forgotten in the wake of the recent financial crisis and the ongoing recession. She covers a wide swath of macroeconomics and takes in the causes of inflation, the relation between unemployment and inflation, the Phillips curve, the role of expectations, and much more. I don't know of any other book quite like this."--John Driffill, Birkbeck, University of London

"Granville has read almost everything and has a good eye for the central issues. I liked this book very much."--Thomas J. Sargent, Nobel Laureate in Economics

About the Author
Brigitte Granville is professor of international economics and economic policy at Queen Mary University of London. Her books include "Sovereign Debt: Origins, Crises, and Restructuring."

From Library Journal
The author, who directed Latin American affairs for the National Security Council from 1977 to 1981, makes a valuable addition to the literature on U.S.-Nicaraguan relations. He provides an insider's view of how Latin American policy was made; an analysis of what might have changed the outcome in Nicaragua; and how the United States should deal with future succession crises. The only weakness of this well-written, objective analysis is that, although the author recognizes the importance of past policies, he does not effectively demonstrate how they limit U.S. choices in a crisis. Highly recommended for informed readers and specialists. Roderic A. Camp, Central Coll., Pella, Ia.

Concealment and Revelation: Esotericism in Jewish Thought and its Philosophical Implications, by Moshe Halbertal

During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, great new trends of Jewish thought emerged whose widely varied representatives--Kabbalists, philosophers, and astrologers--each claimed that their particular understanding revealed the actual secret of the Torah. They presented their own readings in a coded fashion that has come to be regarded by many as the very essence of esotericism. Concealment and Revelation takes us on a fascinating journey to the depths of the esoteric imagination. Carefully tracing the rise of esotericism and its function in medieval Jewish thought, Moshe Halbertal's richly detailed historical and cultural analysis gradually builds conceptual-philosophical force to culminate in a masterful phenomenological taxonomy of esotericism and its paradoxes.

Among the questions addressed: What are the internal justifications that esoteric traditions provide for their own existence, especially in the Jewish world, in which the spread of knowledge was of great importance? How do esoteric teachings coexist with the revealed tradition, and what is the relationship between the various esoteric teachings that compete with that revealed tradition?

Halbertal concludes that, through the medium of the concealed, Jewish thinkers integrated into the heart of the Jewish tradition diverse cultural influences such as Aristotelianism, Neoplatonism, and Hermeticisims. And the creation of an added concealed layer, unregulated and open-ended, became the source of the most daring and radical interpretations of the tradition.

Review
"Halbertal explains complex issues clearly and gracefully, moving smoothly from dense kabbalistic passages to abstruse texts on medieval philosophy in a way that allows the unspecialized reader to follow his train of thought without plumbing the depths of each theological system to which he refers."--Jewish Book World

"This concise and brilliant book . . . provides great insight into individual thinkers like Ibn Ezra, whose astrological beliefs are frequently overlooked by his readers, and Rambam, whose explicit esotericism has perplexed readers for centuries. . . . A translation of the 2001 Hebrew edition, this very scholarly yet highly readable work will be recognized as a masterful work for many years to come."--Tradition

"Halbertal's book outlines a challenging theory in the intellectual history of Jewish creativity. He does not rely on new material but offers a superb interpretation of available material. This book undoubtedly represents a major contribution to the discourse on the character and the varieties of ancient and medieval Jewish thought."--Dov Schwartz, Journal of Religion

From the Back Cover

"Moshe Halbertal's book will be a revelation to anyone interested in religious, philosophical, psychological, or political concealment. It has wide implications for the political craving for transparency, and dazzling insights into depth psychology (such as Freud's) and esoteric tendencies in philosophy (such as Wittgenstein's). The book manifests not only immense learning and virtuosity in reading Jewish texts but also genuine wisdom."--Avishai Margalit, Institute for Advanced Study

"Halbertal's virtuosic exploration of a major dimension of medieval Jewish thought opens new vistas in Jewish philosophy and mysticism."--Moshe Idel, Hebrew University of Jerusalem

"This is the most conceptually penetrating book that I can imagine on concealment and revelation in premodern Jewish thought. An original foray into a subject that has not been well developed, it has the makings of a classic. In particular, the essay on esotericism is rich and substantial. There can be no question of the book's brilliance."--Noah Feldman, author of Divided by God

"Original, consistently interesting, and thought-provoking. This book exhibits the author's knack for synthesizing complicated technical material with clarity and verve, and making it accessible to both scholars in adjacent fields and to general readers."--Bernard Septimus, Harvard University

"This book's taxonomy of esoteric knowledge and attempt to establish its importance both as a thing in itself and as an object of study are absolutely fascinating and indeed captivating. The book made an important aspect of medieval Jewish intellectual and spiritual life much less forbidding to me than it had been before, and it should make similar bodies of esoteric knowledge and esoteric movements--like late antique gnosticism and late medieval Christian mysticism--more approachable also."--William Chester Jordan, Princeton University

About the Author
Moshe Halbertal is the Gruss Professor of Law at New York University School of Law and professor of Jewish thought and philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His books include "Concealment and Revelation: Esotericism in Jewish Thought and its Philosophical Implications" (Princeton) and "People of the Book: Canon, Meaning, and Authority."

Masterful Scholarship
By David G.
A brilliant treatment of a difficult, complex subject. The twists and turns of Medieval Jewish mysticism present an overwhelming challenge but Halbertal maps them as clearly as can be done, and the major thrusts of the subject are clear and not difficult to find or follow. The jewels of this study are in the philosophical implications of this history, with the final chapter profound in the surprise connections I had never before considered. Certainly a background in Jewish or even Christian mysticism is a great help in approaching this work, but an intelligent reader of general background will find considerable reward here as well. Scholarship at its best. Masterful.

difficult interesting read
By E. Freedlander
Concealment and Revelation is a very good book if you have background in the subject of esotericism and the debate over it in the medieval ages. However, it is still very difficult to understand with that background. As for amazon, they shipped it to me on time, and it was in perfectly new condition. I would suggest this for anyone looking to read a historical philosophy book on the subject of esotericism as long as you have previous knowledge in the subject.

The Wagners: The Dramas of a Musical Dynasty, by Nike Wagner

In this virtuoso piece of cultural history, the great-granddaughter of Richard Wagner narrates the Wagner family's turbulent history. In the process, she shares her considerable insights into the operas and gives an inside account of the internecine struggles that have surrounded the Wagner family jewel: the Bayreuth Festival.

Nike Wagner draws on history, biography, and psychoanalysis to interpret both her family's history and her great-grandfather's operas. She focuses on Bayreuth, revealing how this showcase for Wagner's sublime art so readily served the Third Reich. With clear, often ironic eyes, she examines her family's extraordinary role in German culture--and its connections to right-wing ideology.

Particularly fascinating is the tug-of-war between Nike's visionary but enigmatic father, Wieland, and her astute but aesthetically stodgy uncle, Wolfgang. It was Wieland Wagner who inaugurated a daring new style of Wagner production--characterized by absence of scenery, spare acting, and dramatic lighting--that led to a wider revolution in how operas are produced. But Wolfgang Wagner, now entering his eighties, has controlled the Festival and quarreled with family members since Wieland's premature death in 1966. The author concludes with a look at the current contenders for this family throne, herself among them, and presents her vision for the Festival's future.

Wagnerites will need this book on their shelves. As an example of cultural journalism at its finest, it will also appeal to readers interested in German cultural history or those simply drawn to the melodrama that is the Wagner family story.

From Publishers Weekly
This book by one of the composer's granddaughters is an odd hybrid: part psychologically intense investigation of Wagner's greatest operas in light of his somewhat tortured family history, part a prolonged look at that family history by one who knows it intimately, but takes pains to distance herself from it. Although Nike, the daughter of Wieland Wagner, who helped transform Bayreuth in the de-Nazified wake of WWII, is herself one of the heirs apparent of the dynasty, she does not disclose this until the final pages. It's also the first time she refers to herself in other than the third person a rather remarkable strategy for one with such inside knowledge. The first part of the book a rather laborious attempt to link The Ring, Lohengrin, Tristan and Parsifal with the psychology of their creator and his times is not helped by Nike's dense prose, which even a fluent translation cannot render mellifluous. The second part is much fresher, particularly its portrait of the matriarch, Winifred, an English orphan who married into the family and became a deep embarrassment to it by her flaunted friendship with Hitler and her refusal to reject Nazi views. Nike's account of the recurrent patterns of strong women and vacillating men in the family, and the odd ways in which Bayreuth has been both cherished and rejected by modern Germany, is fascinating. But many readers will still feel that a book written from such a privileged perspective could have offered much more. Illus. not seen by PW.

From Library Journal
Originally published in Germany, this fascinating insider's view by Wagner's great-granddaughter, a music critic and cultural commentator based in Berlin, offers insight into Wagner's operas, including a detailed literary analysis of characters, plots, and symbolism. It is also a history of the Wagner family's productions in Bayreuth, Germany, at the Festspielhaus the factory-like opera house that Wagner designed and the involvement of various family members in shaping and reshaping those productions. Of course, by its very nature, it exalts the works and the heirs (e.g., Nike's father, Wieland Wagner, who initiated an era of stark style), but at the same time it is somewhat critical of certain productions and especially of recent trends. Nike closes with hopeful suggestions for revitalization of the festival. Highly recommended for public and academic libraries, especially those that specialize in German culture. Timothy J. McGee, Univ. of Toronto

From Booklist
The extended family of Richard Wagner has presided over the festival in Bayreuth dedicated to the performance of his operas since it opened in 1876. Cosima, Richard's second wife, and Winifred, his daughter-in-law, carried on the Wagner legacy for almost 75 years. Now control is vested in Wolfgang, Winifred's second son. Nike Wagner is the daughter of Wieland, Wolfgang's brother. Her account of the family business relates its internecine struggles for power and squabbles over ownership of the composer's heritage to the psychological themes of the father-son relations and strong female personalities that are crucial to his operas. Nike first analyzes the heart of the Wagnerian canon--Die Meistersinger, Tannhauser, Lohengrin, Tristan und Isolde, Parsi fal, and the Ring cycle--and then relays the history of the festival, including much about Winifred's friendship with Hitler, and all branches of the family. In conclusion, Nike proposes Bayreuth be reformed to include other Romantic composers' music and nonmusical theater. Despite her intimate connection to the festival, a better treatment of the family-run cultural institution seems unimaginable. Alan Hirsch

Mildly interesting family reminiscences and Wagner thoughts
By Laon
Some of Richard Wagner's genius descended to his son Siegfried Wagner, whose vastly under-rated music I am currently, delightedly, discovering. I wish Siegfried had composed more.

But the only aspect of Richard Wagner's talent that reached as far as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren is that for writing self-serving autobiographies. In fact a minor literary genre has been established: memoirs by people who are famous only for being a descendent of Richard Wagner. Thus we have _Shadow over Bayreuth_ by Friedelind Wagner, _Acts_ by her brother Wolfgang ["it may be called _Acts_, but it sure aint Gospel"], the book by Gottfried Wagner that has so far been published under three different titles, and counting, and Nike's _The Wagners: The Dramas of a Musical Dynasty_.

The only Wagner descendent with an interesting story to tell, and a ghost writer who told it well, was Friedelind. But then she appears to have been a genuinely likeable, if extremely difficult, human being, who inherited some of her grandfather's courage and directed it against the Nazis, in the certainty (I think utterly justified) that he would have approved.

The remainder of the Wagner memoirs are marked principally by petulance, the tone tending to waver between the whiny and the snarky. Of these, Nike's book is the least bad. So what can we say about Nike's book, beyond that it is better than Gottfried's or Wolfgang's books?

The most interesting section is the family history, which from my point of view contains a few, all too few, anecdotes or glimpses of the last Wagner descendants to be at all interesting in their own right: that is, Siegfried Wagner and his daughter Friedelind.

Nike thinks that her father, Wieland Wagner, was also a major creative person, like his father and grandfather. I don't think that, though it depends on what you mean by "creative"; certainly he was a moderately innovative theatre director. Anyway, she gives us a partial portrait of Wieland. I feel her account is slightly bowdlerised, perhaps because she is making her claim to the Bayreuth Festival through her descent from Wieland, and therefore she would not wish to bring into question his fitness to have been involved in the post-War Bayreuth. So awkward matters like Wieland's involvement with the Flossenberg Concentration Camp remain glossed over.

On the evidence of this book, it seems that if Nike's claim on the festival were to be successful, it would not result in greater openness in relation to the Bayreuth archives for the period 1920-1945.

The rest of Nike's more recent family gossip is of less interest to me, since none of the living Wagners are especially interesting people. They belong in the society pages, and not in cultural coverage. Except perhaps Wolfgang, who could look back on and reveal much about a fascinating historical period; but his "autobiography" makes it clear he has no intention of doing so.

The other part of the book reveals Nike's thoughts about the works, and ideas for revitalising the festival. The thoughts are mostly moderately interesting, if not blindingly insightful. The only oddity is bringing the early 20th century nutcase Otto Weininger into her discussion of _Parsifal_. The trouble is that Weininger was a tormented homosexual Jewish man who hated homosexuals and Jews in general, and himself in particular, also hating women, while he was about it, and committed suicide.

I suspect Nike bought into the 1960s/1970s idea that insane people are somehow more insightful and interesting than the rest of us. In fact the opposite is true. Weininger's thoughts on _Parsifal_ are as relevant to an understanding of that work as Charlie Manson's thoughts on the _White Album_ are relevant to the exegesis of that Beatles' classic.

As for Nike's thoughts on the Festival, I think they have merit. It would be useful to perform Wagner's earlier operas at Bayreuth as part of the Festival, perhaps not in the main theatre, and also to perform operas that influenced him (Beethoven, Cherubini, Marschner, Weber, and others), and were influenced by him. And Bayreuth should commission and perform new operas, which surely is what Wagner meant by "Children, do something new."

So Nike's thoughts about the festival make a worthwhile contribution. Still, as for the succession, with some sentimental regret I think that it should go to the best candidate, and I think it astronomically unlikely that the best candidate will be called Wagner.

Summary: a mildly interesting book. Very far from essential, but at least readable. And I'd rather spend time in her company (I mean as a reader) than either Gottfried or Wolfgang. What a terrible shame, by the way, that Siegfried Wagner didn't write an autobiography.

Cheers!

Laon

Wagner Smargner
By Karitta Guuska-Bertelsen
Oh the poor girl, to be an off-spring of such a family. I started to skip some of her essays of the operas, as she may be Wagner's great-grand-daughter, but, dear God, she's a boring writer, and I, for one, don't need, in 2001, the message of Tristan und Isolde etc., rammed down my throat.
When I looked at this book at Frankfurt flughafen in 1999 the German edition had some of the text blacked out, and I've heard since that Anja Silja objected to the text concerning her after the book was printed. Silja doesn't come out as very likeable in the English version, but then, does anyone ever like their father's mistress? [For Frau Wagner's information, her father and Frau Silja never made a production together in Milan, and the Stuttgart Lulu was 1966, not 1960.]
I get very tired when it's page after page of bad behaviour by irredeemably dreadful people to their nice relations. I also get a bit irritated when young people are brought up well beyond their means and talents just because they are the great grandchildren of a famous composer. It's pretentious. One longs to shout at them: "Break free, go away, make your own life for yourself away from Bayreuth."
I also don't care for Frau Wagner's future plans for the Bayreuth Festival!!!! Wagner isn't Walt Disney, dear, and Bayreuth, and I would have Nike Wagner think about this strongly, was there before she was born and will be there after she is long dead. A sobering thought but a very useful one.

The Wagners:The Dramas of a Musical Dynasty
By rick
Although the Wagner grand-daughter exhibits brilliant gifts that seem handed down from the great composer himself,it has become tiresome and tedious to keep harping on his so-called "anti-Semitism". After all, when all is said and done, and if she were aware of Wagner's essay Art and Revolution,he made it clear that his secular humanism despised Christentum most as the cause of debasement of Man and stifling of artistic creativity.Even the essay Judentums in der Musik is most lucid when it allows for the likeliest conclusion:that it is really Christentums that has proven most detrimental to music. It is Nietszche who truly echoes the truest Wagnerian lucidity by terming traditional Christentum as the "The Ultimate Corruption" [Letzte Koruption]. Ironically, she has too gullibly yielded to current faddishness,as if a mere product of her own society, the condition of which was Wagner's greatest weakness and partly the source of his decadent side. His gratest music is a triumph of anti-christianitic,humanistic visionaryism. Let us cease this masochistic catering to viciously inferior, decadent fashion.

Neuronal Man, by Jean-Pierre Changeux

Over the past thirty-five years, there has been an explosive increase in scientists' ability to explain the structure and functioning of the human brain. While psychology has advanced our understanding of human behavior, various other sciences, such as anatomy, physiology, and biology, have determined the critical importance of synapses and, through the use of advanced technology, made it possible actually to see brain cells at work within the skull's walls. Here Jean-Pierre Changeux elucidates our current knowledge of the human brain, taking an interdisciplinary approach and explaining in layman's terms the complex theories and scientific breakthroughs that have significantly improved our understanding in the twentieth century.

abysmally disappointing
By M. Lilliquist
Although this book is written by an accomplished scientist about an intrinsically fascinating topic, I found it to be quite disappointing. The title would seem to offer more - a discussion which connects the neurons of our brains with ourselves as people. Nope, not in this book.
The main shortcoming of this book is it's focus on the lower levels of brain function - physiology and chemistry. This makes some sense, given the authors own ground-breaking research on synaptic transmission. Unfortunately, this emphasis also means that any systems-level understanding of the brain and of behavior is almost completely missing. There is virtually no neuropsychological content. There's no real discussion of language, human learning, perception, cognition, etc. The whole affair is decidely reductionistic.
As an example of the magnitude of the mismatch between what the reader might expect and what Changeux offers: "consciousness" is discussed on two brief pages, and what he writes about is consciousness as in sleeping or staying awake!
There are an increasing number of excellent books on the human brain written by leading scientists. For example, please don't confuse this book with the far-better and similarly titled work by Joseph LeDoux, called "The Synaptic Self." Read that book instead "Neuronal Man." If you're feeling ambitious, try Steven Pinker's "How the Mind Works." If you're into the more philosophical questions, try Antonio Damnasio's "The Feeling of What Happens." Now, that's a book which really connects our minds to our bodies!

Difficult, dry
By Ken Braithwaite
I found this a bit of a slog. Needs more helpful diagrams -- color would help -- and a little more life. Despite the mass of info here, I don't quite know how much I really learned from this, although there certainly was a lot in it to learn, but because it didn't really do the trick for me. Better for hard core biology types I expect.

Everything you always needed to know about ecology*
By Bob Newman
*But didn't know that you wanted to ask.

Actually, when I purchased this book from Princeton University Press, I thought it would be about the lives of tigers, leopards, jaguars and other big, fierce animals. I've read and enjoyed a few such zoological tomes over the course of a lifetime---on seagulls, on penguins, or koalas---though my usual fare lies in literature, history, travel, and anthropology. So, when I finally took Colinvaux's work off my shelf, I was rather surprised to find that it was about the whole circle of Life. I kept on reading though and now am glad I did. If you feel yourself lacking a scientific background, like your reviewer, and you have some basic curiosity about the field of ecology, this book is going to be just the ticket. The author has a genius for keeping it simple, keeping it clear. From the idea that every species has its niche, he expands to a host of other topics like the amazing inefficiency of plant life in converting available energy into growth (around 2%, compared to the efficiency of human-made engines, at least 20%); the grouping of trees in forests, the social life of plants; why the sea is blue (no life in it); the composition of soils in different parts of the world; how different sets of plant communities succeed one another as the environment changes; the peaceful coexistence of the vast majority of plants and animals instead of the vicious "law of the jungle" sometimes depicted in other literature. I'm just scratching the surface here. Many of the topics explored bear on the hot issues of the day, for instance global warming, pollution, and exploitation of earth's resources. Each topic is very understandable. If I were a high school or community college biology/ecology/botany teacher, I bet I could make a couple semesters' lectures out of this one book, it's that good. When the author tries to analyze human behavior and geopolitical rivalries on the basis of ecological principles in the last chapter, I think he falls between the cracks. Certainly human beings are animals only recently graduated from hunting and gathering. Their child-bearing habits must hark back to the Ice Age as Colinvaux says. But to try to predict human history on the basis of ecology alone is risky. The predictions made in the 1970s already look out of date. Other than this small criticism of one chapter, I heartily recommend this book. And it seems that the scary, ferocious Tyranosaurus rex (largest predator that ever lived) is a myth. It was a lazy carrion-eater. Ah well, sorry, Rex, you looked great in Jurassic Park !

A masterful exposition of the science that asks ``why?''
By A Customer
I read this book recently, and wish that I'd read it when
it was first published 20 years ago.

Colinvaux is fascinating in his relentless search for the
answer to the ``why?'' questions of the natural world ---
- why are there so many species (why not more?) - why are
there more species in the tropics than in the tundra? - why
do deciduous trees drop their leaves? - why do there appear
to be ``societies of plants'' (deciduous forests, coniferous
forests)? - why are plants so inefficient at converting
sunlight to plant matter? - and, of course, why are big
fierce animals rare (and why aren't there bigger, fiercer ones)?

This is not just a book about ecology, it is a book about
thinking.

How rare! A thinker who can write!
By A Customer
Interesting, humorous, lucid, balanced -- Paul Colinvaux's book is one of the finest books I've read. He takes biological conundrums and makes them crystalline. Controversial topics are handled with balance and grace. Abstruse terms are explained simply and wittily.
Written in 1978, the book is a little dated in some areas. For instance, he has a whole chapter on the increase of carbon dioxide in the air and never once mentions global warming. But this is a very small issue. Most of the book is timeless, and invaluable.

PCT, Spin and Statistics, and All That, by Raymond F. Streater, Arthur S. Wightman

PCT, Spin and Statistics, and All That is the classic summary of and introduction to the achievements of Axiomatic Quantum Field Theory. This theory gives precise mathematical responses to questions like: What is a quantized field? What are the physically indispensable attributes of a quantized field? Furthermore, Axiomatic Field Theory shows that a number of physically important predictions of quantum field theory are mathematical consequences of the axioms. Here Raymond Streater and Arthur Wightman treat only results that can be rigorously proved, and these are presented in an elegant style that makes them available to a broad range of physics and theoretical mathematics.

This book is as important to modern physics as Aquinas is to modern religion. And, unlike Aquinas, it has an important Appendix trying to give some flavor of alternative views of the fundamentals.
As Neri notes: the book is widely cited as THE definitive source on the spin-statistics relation, which is more important to practical, real quantum field theory (QFT) than heuristic concepts like the uncertainty principle; yet the proof of spin-statistics and PCT rests on four famous axioms (chapter 3) which do not really make sense in a strict sense, and call out for a proof on a more solid basis.
The book begins (like Aquinas) with some very laudable and lofty goals, such as (1) creation of a completely transparently
relativistic formulation of QFT, unlike the more plodding and earthly and empirically oriented treatments (such as Mandl's text on QFT, which I strongly recommend for those who would want to be more grounded in empirical reality) of "an earlier age"; (2)field operators which represent actual "dressed" particles instead of those pesky "bare fields" that older texts start with. But theer are problems here.
He gives examples in chapter 1 showing that he envisions the wave functions in the new clean theory as objects over what some would call "F4", the Fock space in which N particles are represented by (3+1)*N space-time coordinates, unlike the usual plodding world of F3, of 3*N space coordinates. This is beautiful -- but for physically meaningful local wave packets,
and the usual inner product, these objects do not have finite norms. They do not form a Hilbert space. To assume BOTH this concept of relativistic transformation AND Hilbert space at the same time (the seminal axioms)appears to be a contradiction. At the least, a proper treatment should epxlain what is going on here. Presumably, the later authors (described in the appendix)
who claim that some simple QFTs obey the axioms must have found an operational version or reinterpretation of what the "standard Wightman axioms" mean, but there is no hint of what that could be in the book. I would guess that people have
politely gone back to F3 when analyzing actual theories -- and
are right to do so. But the axioms that are ACTUALLY used when
working in F3 need highlighting.
Also, as other reviewers have noted, "dressed" field operators do not normally have strictly local commutation relations. There goes another one.
Again, the new Appendix is one of the most important parts of the book -- but, as the authors note, it is a bit condensed.
There are many empiricist or postmodernist or new age critics of this book who totally disregard the book for totally wrong reasons. In effect, they say that the quest for a mathematically well-defined theory is itself an unnecessary bore. Some of them might say the same about mathematics itself.
If this book is like Aquinas, those folks are like the creationist thumpers. Yes, there are problems here in the mathematical foundations, but that is no excuse for not trying to fix them. And it is no excuse for totally ignoring the lessons learned in earlier efforts. This book has its problems, but it is better than treatments like those of TV preachers who try to make people feel good by soothing their nerves and their
perceptions, and try to make them feel like guilty sinners whenever a hint of questions enter their minds. Classical
perturbation theory, like the sharia of the Abbasids, has limits which can be truly crippling, no matter how elegantly it is dressed up.
But perhaps we do need a fresh look at what we can figure out in a more plodding logical kind of way, starting from what we
can grasp from empirically-oriented treatments like Mandl's,
or like Walls and Milburn or HJ Carmichael.

What is a quantum field ?
By henrique fleming
This advanced book exposes the mathematical framework of quantum field theory, as discovered by Wightman, who explained, in an article published in Physics Today, that he was led to such abstract language in order to understand the forces that bind the deuteron nucleus! This was only the beginning: present books and papers on the structure of quantum fields employ (and develop!) mathematics which make the Streater-Wightman book look like Harry Potter. Still, this book is assumed reading for all these advanced studies. It is extremely well written, for one thing. The initial chapter introduces the concept of free particle along ideas which I think belong to Wigner: particles are irreducible representations of the Poicare group. So, group theory is necessary for the grammar of quantum field theory. Fields require Schwartz distribution theory, as intuitively discovered by Bohr and Rosenfeld. Then follow general theorems for local field theory, like spin-statistics, CPT (and all that...). There is now an appendix where more modern topics are presented, but the core of the book is more or less what I described. This is a great book, written with great care and wit. It is a pity that most physicists, even quantum field theorists, did'nt read it.
