A Guided Tour to Carl Jung

This is a biography of Carl Jung (1875-1961), but so much more than that. It traces his life and professional development, drawing on letters and extensive quotes from the Collected Works. It is profusely illustrated, not only with photographs of Jung and the relevant people and places in his life, but also with his drawings. After Jung's break with Freud in the early 1910's, Jung went through a about a decade of professional isolation and rich personal growth. During that time, he kept a journal called the "Red Book", which he decorated with drawing and paintings based on his dreams and active imagination. Many striking images from the Red Book are reproduced in this volume: a drawing of Philemon, Jung's inner spiritual guide; the viscerally disquieting "Meeting with the Shadow"; and a singularly captivating image, "The Light at the Heart of Darkness". Photos of Jung in his travels and at his house in Bollingen round out this engaging visual tour of Jung's contribution. This is a wonderful introduction to Jung's life and work, especially for someone of an artistic inclination.

Highly Recommended for Anyone Interested in Jung

Fabulous documentary of an accomplished, complicated personality. It is a compassionate almost intimate accounting of the life and work of Carl Jung. It is profusely illustrated with his personal work and photos of life and family. Large type and understandable text. Great overall image of a great man.

The Inner Jung

This "small book" was a big surprise for me. I had previously read two full-scale biographies of Carl Jung: Hayman's "A life of Jung", and what I consider Jung's definitive biography, Bair's masterpiece "Jung, a Biography". So I approached this book lightly, like if it was only going to be an appetizer. But it ended up being a much more fulfilling experience than I had expected.

This book came about as a pictorial volume of an exhibition that was held in Zurich in 1975 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Jung's birth. But it was the intention of the author to offer more than a catalogue of the exhibition. The end result gave us an intimate portrait of Jung where we have the opportunity to catch a glimpse of his inner life. This biography is not very much concerned with the main events of Jung's life, or his accomplishments. Instead it has been constructed around the development of his philosophy through the various experiences of his life. This approach allows the reader to witness the evolution of Jung's inner growth, from childhood to the end of his life.

Having served as the secretary of the C.G. Jung Institute, and afterwards as Jung's personal secretary, Aniela Jaffé had a deep understanding of his philosophy and an intimate knowledge of Jung the man. And she was the co-author of "Memories, Dreams, and Reflection", Jung's famous autobiography. We actually find many quotes from that book in "Word and Image". Many people are likely to view this book as a simple introduction to Carl Jung for interested individuals who would not already be familiar with him or his work; and this was likely the main intention behind that endeavour. But it turned out to be much more than that for me. This book allowed me to immerse myself in Jung's inner world. And that is something no other biography of Jung that I had read before have ever been able to achieve for me.

Jaffé was in close contact with Jung until he died and it is like if he was still with her when she worked on this book. What makes it so special is that Jaffé was able to convey Jung's inner atmosphere like no one else has ever done before or since. I don't know why exactly but I was deeply moved by this book. But of course I cannot guarantee that Jaffé's magic spell will work equally well on anyone who will read this book. In any event it would still make a nice coffee table book where each Word carries meaning and every Image touches the soul.

The previous review

The review below ("Lacking enough depth and details") was written by a disgruntled student of mine soon after he finished my course, presumably because he was dissatisfied with his grade. Take it for what you will. My view is that Persson and Tabellini's book is nicely complementary with mine (it covers different things and has a different focus). I use both in teaching, as well as a number of other books.

More a survey than a textbook

The book covers several topics on political economics and macroeconomics including (but not limited to) inconsistency in government policies, voting, election and political cycles. The first chapters get into a better discussion of topics. But as the book proceeds, the coverage of book from each topic or model becomes brief, leaving the reader to seek the related paper in journals to understand the topic in depth. The models are simplified and normally the result follows, the book refers you for complete discussion to the papers.

Another big problem with the book is lack of an introductory chapter that goes through some mathematical tools or concepts that will be used later in the book, such as game theory or "single crossing property", etc. Though these may be commonly used, but a reiteration of definitions will be useful. This book leaves you to look it up somewhere else.

Though the book can be a basis for understanding political economics, I wouldn't rank that as a reference or complete book in this field. Instead I would recommend the book by Tabellini, et.al .

A must in any economist's library

Numerous issues concerning conflict of interest and strategic behavior are involved in political matters and economic policy decisions in particular, and in macroeconomic outcomes in general. Allan Drazen presents the most complete analysis of the literature concerning these issues, both from a theoretical and an empirical perspective. I think this book is the Blanchard and Fischer's of Political Economy. Superb.

Explains "Animal Design" in a Remarkably Readable Style

One of the most readable biology books I've ever come across. While it can easily be used for an undergraduate course in animal physiology and evolution, Vogel's text is humorous, (obscure references, funny quotes, and puns abound, adding to the text rather than detracting from it), but also covers a wide range of topics with clear explainations. The chapters are well structured and the table of contents suggests some of the more interesting highlights: why an ant might bite but can't hit, reinflating squid, plumbing the common features of the pipes within organisms, etc. While there is a strong emphasis on fluids in biology, (the author's specialty), it's an amazingly readable, well-written, and informative book on the entire subject of the physical constraints on animals for the interested laymen or undergrad. This is an excellent book for those that are interested in learning more about how life developed on this planet. It engages the reader with a variety of examples, stimulating thought as how complexs life is and how it's bound to our physycal universe. I recommend it!

After 25 years of teaching, I revealed a secret method of making better human beings in my new book, "The Poetry Lesson," which I am advertising shamelessly here, because I asked my Ghost-Companion, Blaise Cendrars, what I should do, and he said, on page 152 of his "Complete Poems": "A banker tells us all about an artificial egg factory on the outskirts of Bordeaux." Now I'm no banker, but even I know that laying the artificial eggs of advertising is the chief occupation of public persons today. I have therefore laid this before you. It beats commenting on the upcoming elections, or other nonpoetic horrors that will decide what happens to us in the future. Poetry doesn't care about the future: it already knows everything.

Poetry as Life, not as School

People who love Codrescu love him for different reasons: some love his poetry, some love his short, punchy radio pieces, some just love his warm voice and Romanian accent -- which, an old friend of his tells me, gets thicker every year. Me, I love it when he talks about literature, mostly because he does this in a way so different from academic literary criticism (full disclosure: I write a lot of academic literary criticism). My favorite Codrescu books -- The Disappearance of the Outside, The Posthuman Dada Guide -- weave observations about literature together with reminiscences about authors, odd little historical anecdotes, and Codrescu's own imaginative flights of fancy. The Poetry Lesson is a book in this mode: it begins as a rendition of Codrescu teaching a poetry seminar, assigning each of his students a poet to be their "ghost companion" (a poet, living or dead, to read, argue with, and turn to in crisis). This opening serves as a springboard from which Codrescu launches into memories of meeting Aimé Césaire, or of nearly getting smashed with a baseball bat in the apartment of a friend from the old Lower East Side poetry scene, or into a quick history of the French Empress Josephine as a revolutionary party girl. For me, the charm of all this comes from how seamlessly art and life integrate. It's clear that poetry isn't simply an academic subject for Codrescu, confined to the classroom and the anthology: it's a way of living in the world. The professor in me always tut-tuts a little at the factual errors that crop up here and there (it's "Alfred, Lord Tennyson," not "Sir Alfred Tennyson," dammit!) but this is just me being petty. Codrescu makes for a great ghost-companion to poetry.

This book may be more expensive than the list price!

What a wonderful concept: a retiring professor takes us through the first day of the last semester he will be teaching. The professor just might be Codrescu, probably embellished but who knows? What shines through is his wide ranging knowledge, his love of poetry, and his love and sympathy for his students. Did he really express all these super well-connected thought and bits of knowledge? Who knows but it doesn't matter. Codrescu is hilarious and at the same time shows us why poetry can still matter in this hurried-up, computer everything, facebook-everything new world of students. The way he riffs on past experiences and abstruse knowledge is nothing less than brilliant.

Why might this book be expensive? Because, if you are to take poetry seriously, according to his list of the Ten Rules of Poetry (not to be confused with his list of the Ten Muses of Poetry), you should run out and get, among other things a goatskin notebook (for writing down dreams) and a Mont Blanc fountain pen. Sure this is funny and the cost is beyond what most college students can pay, but the real message here is that a) you, yes you, can become a poet if you aspire to that and b) if you do, you must honor the craft and use the best tools possible.

The only problem with this book is its brevity. He doesn't tell us, "what happens next" during the semester. All we know is that we would love to be there in that place (New Orleans) in that class, with that teacher for the whole semester and then some. Is this a send up of academia, as some of the publisher's reviews suggest? Yes, in many places. But also it might just be a peek at what a wondrous course from Codrescu--on anything--might be like.

Get the book, invest in the goatskin notebook, and consider buying the Mt. Blanc fountain pen. Would a Mt. Blanc rollerball do? Maybe but Codrescu seems to be a bit of a stickler. Oh yes, and assign yourself a Ghost Companion, a poet to consult not just on poetry issues but on all issues of life. Must the poet be dead? No! Here Codrescu is a bit relaxed. Dead or Alive. Good luck on the final exam!

I like the long review you are using...Codrescu seemed to search for that poet-teacher who might inspire, support and draw out and match each student's personality .. Since reading this book, I keep wondering which poet he might choose for me,... hoping he might choose Rumi, Mary Oliver? or Whitman? for me to read...but would he? he seemed to search for that right pairing of minds. This made it a deeply involving experience for me. He tends poetry with his passion.
