Heinrich Zimmer (1890-1943) is best known in the English-speaking world for the four posthumous books edited by Joseph Campbell and published in the Bollingen Series: Myths and Symbols in Indian Art and Civilization, Philosophies of India, The Art of Indian Asia, and The King and the Corpse. These works have inspired several generations of students of Indian religion and culture.

All the papers in this volume testify to Zimmer's originality and to his rightful place in that small group of great scholars who were part of the first generation to confront the end of European empires in India and the rest of Asia. In her introduction, Margaret Case contrasts Zimmer's approach to India with that of Jung. There follow two recollections of Zimmer, one by his daughter Maya Rauch, the other by a close friend and supporter in Germany, Herbert Nette. Then William McGuire describes Zimmer's connections with Mary and Paul Mellon and with the Jungian circles in Switzerland and New York. A brief talk by Zimmer, previously unpublished, describes his admiration for Jung. Wendy Doniger picks up the question of Zimmer's intellectual legacy, especially in the light of Campbell's editorial work on his English publications. Gerald Chapple raises another question about how his influence was felt: the division between what is known of his work in the German-and the English-speaking worlds. Kenneth Zysk then summarizes and analyzes his contribution to Western knowledge of Hindu medicine; Matthew Kapstein evaluates his place in the West's appreciation of Indian philosophy; and Mary Linda discusses his contributions to the study of Indian art in the light of A. K. Coomaraswamy's work and more recent research.

Review
"Heinrich Zimmer (1890-1943) was a German Indologist and comparative mythologist whose enthusiasm for his subject helped Westerners see Indian thought not as something exotic but as another expression of the universal aspirations of the human spirit.... These essays make it easier to go beyond the popular level and see why Zimmer stressed what he did."--Asian Folklore Studies

Amor fati
By Jeanne LaVallee
The life and work of Henry (Heinrich Robert) Zimmer (1890-1943) is presented with care and clarity in this little volume. Zimmer's role as the Humanist of the twentieth century is here recognized as one of tremendous importance in the spiritual development of global civilization. This book demonstrates how broad-ranging was his capacity to both understand and reach out to others, mostly through his own example of 'amor fati' --love of his own fate. It is an invaluable introduction to a most influential, but 'unsung', scholar of our times.

Banks and Politics in America from the Revolution to the Civil War, by Bray Hammond

This is a book about politics and banks and history. Yet politicians who read it will see that the author is not a politician, bankers who read it will see that he is not a banker, and historians that he is not an historian. Economists will see that he is not an economist and lawyers that he is not a lawyer.

With this rather cryptic and exhaustive disclaimer, Bray Hammond began his classic investigation into the role of banking in the formation of American society. Hammond, who was assistant secretary of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System from 1944 to 1950, presented in this 771-page book the definitive account of how banking evolved in the United States in the context of the nation's political and social development.

Hammond combined political with financial analysis, highlighting not only the in.uence politicians exercised over banking but also how banking drove political interests and created political coalitions. He captured the entrepreneurial, expansive, risk-taking spirit of the United States from earliest days and then showed how that spirit sometimes undermined sound banking institutions. In Hammond's view, we need central banks to keep the economy on an even keel. Historian Richard Sylla judged the work to be "a wry and urbane study of early U.S. financial history, but also a timeless essay on how Americans became what they are." Banks and Politics in America won the Pulitzer Prize for history in 1958.

Review
"Hammond writes engagingly and his work is a happy blend of diligent research and spirited recitals. . . . We have here an excellent account of the evolution toward a uniform paper currency based on Federal credit and a national banking law."--The Bankers Magazine

"Hammond offers some shrewd insights not only into the interaction between monetary policy and politics but also into the basic drift of federalism in these turbulent years."--Civil War Times

Interesting and original -- but tough to get through
By T. Graczewski
If you've read Schlesinger's "The Age of Jackson" or other liberal interpretations of Jackson and the eponymous socio-political movement that swept the US in the 1830s and are interested in an alternative viewpoint, Bray Hammond's "Banks and Politics in America" (the 1958 Pulitzer Prize winner in history) should be at the top of your reading list.

I hasten to add, however, that this book is an extremely long and arcane history of American banking - central banking, to be more precise - with flashes of cogent analysis and iconoclastic conclusions. In short, this book is most definitely NOT for everyone, and even the most committed students will find that the author makes you work for the insights the book delivers.

Although the book covers over a century of early American banking (from the first colonial land grant offices to the Civil War), the unmistakable focus is Nicolas Biddle's management of the second Bank of the United States (BUS) and the successful Jacksonian assault on that institution beginning in 1832. During the course of his narrative Hammond mercilessly shreds the shibboleths of liberal historians: poor and simple agrarians fought the moneyed elite through Andrew Jackson and his reforms; Nicolas Biddle was a conniving, flagitious political operator; the BUS was a corrupt, inefficient institution that fattened lazy aristocrats at the expense of the humble productive classes; the West was the primary source of hostility toward the BUS. All nonsense, Hammond argues.

Rather, Hammond's thesis is that the main Jacksonian enemies of the BUS - not one of whom was an agrarian, he points out - used Jeffersonian language merely as a pretext to eradicate an institution that was successfully stabilizing the national currency and thus thwarting their speculative business interests. Although he acknowledges that residual agrarian hostility to banks and the resentment of states rights politicians to the intrusion of federal power through the BUS were contributing factors, Hammond argues that the primary impetus for destroying Biddle and the BUS was provided by a new and burgeoning group of business elite, primarily from New York. Made up of ambitious entrepreneurs and local bankers, these new Jacksonians bridled at the regulatory influence the BUS had on restraining free credit. Moreover, because the BUS collected all federal receipts, which at that time were mostly import duties on goods flowing through New York City, local New York banks could not profit from the lucrative trade their city supported. They believed the use of that currency was rightfully theirs, and they resented the fact it was sent to a bank run out of Philadelphia and controlled by Philadelphians (and foreigners, or so many believed, but Hammond denies).

Thus, Hammond concludes, the "Bank War" was really a fight between conservative, principled businessmen on the one side and reckless, "get rich quick" speculators on the other. He holds Nicholas Biddle up as second only to Alexander Hamilton for his contribution in creating the greatest economic engine the world has ever known: American capitalism. Andrew Jackson, meanwhile, is disparaged as a well-meaning dolt whose supposed reforms did nothing to benefit the common man he professed to represent, but rather destroyed the most effective central banking system ever developed by the 1830s.

A unique source of American economic history.
By mchone@fgi.net
About twenty years ago I was researching the early development of banking in U.S. history. Since much of what is available regarding this period is marginally important, I was prepared to be disappointed. Instead, I found Hammond's work to be the most significant research and writing on the subject available at that time.
I learned that Hammond was an experienced banker before joining the Federal Reserve Banking system and becoming their first official historian. His work combines access to original source material, a plain Midwestern style of explanation, and scholarship that is both honest and reliable. In short, Hammond was one of nature's gift.
The book gives a comprehensive account of banking from the colonial period to the Civil War, a time of particular importance for innovative growth. The most important part of his work is his interpretation of the period immediately preceding the Jackson presidency, including a previously unknown development of an alliance of opportunistic young business democrats with decidely opportunistic interests in the potential of Western expansion. Hammond convincinly ties this movement to persons within Jackson's kitchen cabinet. When reading Hammond you quickly become convinced that he knew where all the bones were buried.
Hammond wrote a second book covering the period from the Civil War to the development of the present Federal Reserve system in the Wilson Administration. I understand from other sources that he became seriously ill during this period. The latter work is much shorter than the first and does not achieve the same high standard.
Hammond's original work is a must for anyone with a serious history in the history and development of U.S. financial structures.

A Finely Researched and Beautifully Written Financial History
By William P. Lawrence
Books like this are rare indeed. Mr. Hammond combines an eye for important detail (for example, he provides a balance sheet for one of the earliest American banks) with an engaging writing style and appreciation for what is important and interesting in the historical record. I rank him with John Maynord Keynes and John Kenneth Galbraith as among the most gifted financial writers. I'm sorry it has taken me so long to stumble upon his work.

Review
Winner of the 1993 Award for Best New Book, Professional and Scholarly Division of the American Association of Univeristy Publishers

"Seldom does one come across a science book that weighs 1.5 kg, is packed with information, and yet makes fascinating reading from cover to cover. . . . [Denny] relates the ability of living organisms to exist, move, and function to the bulk physical properties of the two substrates peculiar to Earth: air and water. . . . The biological examples are beautifully chosen and the author displays a fine sense of humor."--Felix Franks, Nature

"This is an interesting and fascinating book for the biologist and environmental scientist, who are often faced with the problem of resolving the interactions between organisms and their environment but rarely have an adequate or sufficiently detailed knowledge of the underlying physical principles to achieve a satisfactory resolution. In considering the interdependence between the physics of air and water, and the functional biology of the organisms which have evolved and adapted to terrestrial or aquatic environments, Denny has focused our attention on how the differences in many attributes of life, such as size and shape, can be explained by the physics of fluids."--Dennis A. Baker, The Times Higher Education Supplement

From Booklist
PreS-Gr. 3. Four-year-old Alex loves chess until his neighbor's uncle, "moldy old" Uncle Hooya, dramatically trounces him. Traumatized, Alex stops playing until elementary school, when an injury on the football field leads him back to the game, and he joins his school chess club. Then, in his first tournament, he faces Uncle Hooya once again--when he plays against the older man's nephew. Wong's rhythmic, colloquial free verse combines the thrill of finding a talent with a child's anxieties, conveying the feelings in an age-appropriate voice: sometimes in a tournament "you do the first thing that pops into your mind, / which is really, really dumb, / but you really, really, really have to pee." Schuett's gouache-and-ink illustrations show a close-up cast of likable, multicultural kids supporting one another and facing off across the board. For young chess enthusiasts, this makes a good companion to David Birch's The King's Chessboard (1988), but all kids working hard to develop a passion will recognize Alex's excitement and his struggle to overcome disappointments. More than a kid's book
By Alan Hodge
The core of this story is formulaic (kid suffers setback, kid gives up, kid bounces back, kid finds success). But it was written by someone who obviously understands the world of scholastic chess, and chess is therefore more than a parable for the lessons of life: it is the central feature of the story. The humor and moral are subtle and understated; while they clearly went over the "kid reviewer's" head, it's easy to see why from the sense of humor he displayed in his review. Other readers should not be thrown off the scent by someone who didn't get it. Kids should be attracted by Alex, who finds something he likes to do, decides to stick with it, and perseveres to succeed even though he fails several times beforehand. But this is as much a book for adults as kids: a sly tribute to a mother who understands both the benefits and the attractive power of chess and who was wise enough to "put up with" junk food, missing chores, and an ego funk in order to get Alex hooked on the game. Smart woman!

This book is about a boy who loved to play chess. My favorite part was when the knights acted like real horses, galloping across the board and jumping over other pieces.

The Age of Social Democracy: Norway and Sweden in the Twentieth Century, by Francis Sejersted

This is the history of how two countries on the northern edge of Europe built societies in the twentieth century that became objects of inspiration and envy around the world. Francis Sejersted, one of Scandinavia's leading historians, tells how Norway and Sweden achieved a rare feat by realizing grand visions of societies that combine stability, prosperity, and social welfare. It is a history that holds many valuable lessons today, at a time of renewed interest in the Scandinavian model.

The book tells the story of social democracy from the separation of Norway and Sweden in 1905 through the end of the century, tracing its development from revolutionary beginnings through postwar triumph, as it became a hegemonic social order that left its stamp on every sector of society, the economy, welfare, culture, education, and family. The book also tells how in the 1980s, partly in reaction to the strong state, a freedom and rights revolution led to a partial erosion of social democracy. Yet despite the fracturing of consensus and the many economic and social challenges facing Norway and Sweden today, the achievement of their welfare states remains largely intact.

Review
One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 2011

"I hope that every member of the shadow cabinet reads this book."--Vernon Bogdanor, New Statesman

"Historians generally overlook modern Scandinavian history, but Scandinavia's remarkable social stability and prosperity in a century of European turbulence merits much more attention than it has received. If only to fill this gap, this history of the development and demise of 20th-century Norway's and Sweden's Scandinavian models is highly welcome. The richly detailed work evaluates intertwined economic, political, and cultural history to show how in the 1930s, Norway and Sweden assembled durable farmer-labor coalitions and avoided totalitarian temptations. . . . [The Age of Social Democracy] fills a huge gap in English-language work on Scandinavia, and will prove highly useful for comparative scholarship on the development of industrial democracies and welfare-state politics more generally."--Choice

"There can be no doubt that this is an extremely important--even seminal--contribution, which may be expected to stand as an influential account of the Scandinavian twentieth century for some time."--Mary Hilson, Journal of Modern History

"[A] very well-written and readable overview of an impressive Scandinavian transformation and the achievements of Scandinavian social democracy in the twentieth century."--Robert Geyer, International Affairs

"Drawing upon an extensive array of research from both the social sciences and humanities, Sejersted delivers an account that is almost encyclopedic in terms of the topics reviewed, and one that is likely to become regularly consulted by those seeking a primer in the history of Scandinavian social democracy. It will be, quire simply, the go-to book on the topic."--Gregg Bucken-Knapp, Perspectives on Politics

"[R]ich and multifaceted. . . . [T]he thrust of Sejersted's own analysis is an empirically well based and theoretically articulated discussion."--Kristian Gernera, European Legacy

From the Back Cover

"This book will be a treasure trove for scholars--and politicians!--who want to understand the workings of the 'Scandinavian model.' Social scientists will value it for the wealth of telling details and compelling counterexamples that can suggest new generalizations and undermine old ones. Historians will appreciate how narrative and analysis acquire depth and relief by the comparison between the intertwined developments of Norway and Sweden, one country now lagging behind and now leaping ahead of its neighbor along economic, political, and cultural dimensions. Politicians will want to understand whether the stable and affluent social democracies rest on unique historical and geographical constellations or offer a model that can be imitated. By virtue of its acute psychological insights and low-key but poignant irony, The Age of Social Democracy is also a marvelously wise book."--Jon Elster, Collège de France and Columbia University

"It is very rare to find this kind of grand historical work today, a synthetic account of a major political movement that spans more than a hundred years and covers two countries. This is a very rich book, addressing numerous subjects, from social insurance, the welfare state project, and labor market policies to university reforms and religious questions. Sejersted demonstrates an almost phenomenal knowledge of the research that has been carried out on the subjects he discusses."--Bo Rothstein, University of Gothenburg

"Sejersted does a masterful job of following and linking the threads of economic and intellectual developments. This is a major work."--Henry Milner, University of Umea, Sweden

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2 Rabbit's favorite time of year is spring, when he can plant his garden. He plows, plants, waters, weeds, and waits for his carrots to grow, while looking forward to eating carrot soup. But at harvest time, he finds that all of his beloved plants are gone. As he asks his neighbors if they have seen his produce, each one skillfully avoids answering. In the background, readers see animals holding balloons, wearing party hats, and hauling away bucketloads of carrots. Disappointed, Rabbit returns home to discover that his friends have organized a party and cooked his favorite soup. The book ends with the word Surprise! and it is not clear if Rabbit is pleased or not. However, children will find this tale satisfying in its predictability and will enjoy being in on the secret. The illustrations are rendered in soft-hued watercolors with lots of white space and playful animal caricatures. Segal intermittently uses a storyboard format to convey the progression of the action. Read this tale along with Wilson Gage's Squash Pie (Dell, 1980, o.p.), Ruth Krauss's The Carrot Seed (HarperCollins, 1945), or Vladimir Vagin's The Enormous Carrot (Scholastic, 1998) for a tasty storytime and try the carrot soup recipe at the back, too. From Booklist
PreS-Gr. 2. Here's a springtime book that's great for kids who love planning and doing projects. Rabbit, a very organized animal, loves carrot soup. He spends the long winter paging through carrot catalogs (a full-page spread shows the different colors, shapes, and sizes of eight kinds of carrots). Then he plows and plants, waters and weeds, and waits. Finally it's time to harvest, but when he goes to pick the carrots, they are all gone. He frantically questions all the animals he knows, but not one admits to liking carrots. "Discouraged and disappointed, Rabbit went home," where he discovered a wonderful surprise. The clues are in Segal's stylized pencil and watercolor pictures, and observant children won't have any trouble determining where the carrots went. The delicate springtime greens and browns used in the background contrast nicely with Rabbit's comically expressive face. A recipe for carrot soup provides an appetizing finish. Connie Fletcher

PASS THE CARROTS PLEASE!!!
By Pamela A. Poddany
CARROT SOUP

What a darling little book! I purchased two as Easter gifts; one for my grandson, three, and granddaughter who is ten months old. When I read this book to my grandson, all we did was laugh!

The illustrations are wonderful -- cute little animals, all with a secret for Rabbit. What first caught our eye was the balloons in the background with each animal -- cute and sweet and fun for kids!

We enjoyed the story line which deals with friends, working together, and, what else? CARROTS! Being big carrot eaters, we truly enjoyed the book and this made THE perfect Easter gift!! But it is a great book anytime of the year.

Get this book, get a bag of baby carrots and some ranch dressing, grab a kid or two and read and reread! You will truly love this book. There is also a wonderful recipe included for carrot soup.

Enjoy!

Thank you!
Pam

What a little gem
By A. Hasting
Speech Language Pathologists (OK, and parents too):

This is one of the best books I have found for teaching theory of mind. Even though we can see the animals in the background, hauling carrots, THE RABBIT CAN'T SEE THEM AND DOESN'T KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON. The rabbit even talks to animals that we have seen with the carrots, so if the child is ready for several perspectives within the book, this makes for an interesting discussion. For example, we see the dog wheeling carrots in the background while the rabbit talks to the mole. On the next page, the rabbit asks the dog if he's seen the carrots (meanwhile, the cat is carrying carrots). We can talk about who knows where the carrots are and who doesn't know. We can even talk about whether the dog probably knows what the cat is doing and why. Mind blowing, I know.

Even more advanced concept: When the rabbit asks where the carrots are, none of the animals tell him, yet none of them lie and say that they don't know. It's quite oblique. You can read into what they're saying. You can talk about their motives. Why would the dog say that he doesn't like carrots and to ask the cat? For many autistic children, the desire to keep a "fun" social secret like a surprise party is unfathomable.

This simple children's book is not so simple. And yet it IS, because it's comprehensible to typical 3-year-olds. I like it more each time I use it in therapy.

p.s. Another great theory of mind picture book is Rosie's Walk, by Pat Hutchins.

The Socialist System: The Political Economy of Communism, by János Kornai

To understand the dramatic collapse of the socialist order and the current turmoil in the formerly communist world, this comprehensive work examines the most important common properties of all socialist societies. JNBnos Kornai brings a life-long study of the problems of the socialist system to his explanation of why inherent attributes of socialism inevitably produced in-efficiency. In his past work he has focused on the economic sphere, maintaining consistently that the weak economic performance of socialist countries resulted from the system itself, not from the personalities of top leaders or mistakes made by leading organizations and planners. This book synthesizes themes from his earlier investigations, while broadening the discussion to include the role of the political power structure and of communist ideology. Kornai distinguishes between two types, or historical phases, of socialism. The "classical socialism" of Stalin, Mao, and their followers is totalitarian and brutally repressive, but its components fit together and make up a coherent edifice. Associated with names like Tito, KNBdar, Deng-Xiaoping, and Gorbachev, "reform socialism" relaxes repression, but brings about a sharpening of inner contradictions and the eventual dissolution of the system. Kornai examines the classical system in the first half of the book, and moves on to explore the complex process of reform in the second half. The Socialist System is addressed to economists in the first place, but also to political scientists, sociologists, and historians. In addition, it will appeal to policymakers, business analysts, and government officials who need to understand either formerly or presently communist countries.

Nonlinear Dynamical Systems and Control: A Lyapunov-Based Approach, by Wassim M. Haddad, Vijaya Sekhar Chellaboina

Nonlinear Dynamical Systems and Control presents and develops an extensive treatment of stability analysis and control design of nonlinear dynamical systems, with an emphasis on Lyapunov-based methods. Dynamical system theory lies at the heart of mathematical sciences and engineering. The application of dynamical systems has crossed interdisciplinary boundaries from chemistry to biochemistry to chemical kinetics, from medicine to biology to population genetics, from economics to sociology to psychology, and from physics to mechanics to engineering. The increasingly complex nature of engineering systems requiring feedback control to obtain a desired system behavior also gives rise to dynamical systems.

Wassim Haddad and VijaySekhar Chellaboina provide an exhaustive treatment of nonlinear systems theory and control using the highest standards of exposition and rigor. This graduate-level textbook goes well beyond standard treatments by developing Lyapunov stability theory, partial stability, boundedness, input-to-state stability, input-output stability, finite-time stability, semistability, stability of sets and periodic orbits, and stability theorems via vector Lyapunov functions. A complete and thorough treatment of dissipativity theory, absolute stability theory, stability of feedback systems, optimal control, disturbance rejection control, and robust control for nonlinear dynamical systems is also given. This book is an indispensable resource for applied mathematicians, dynamical systems theorists, control theorists, and engineers.

a masterpiece
By J. R. M. López
This is a monumental work. If you're dealing with dynamical systems this is a must. Of course, it's full of maths but this is not a book intended for the beginner. It assumes a solid knowledge of algebra and analysis. In some aspects it's a true encyclopaedic work. It contains an excellent statement of Zubov's theorem that I haven't found nowhere else.

Exploitation, by Alan Wertheimer

What is the basis for arguing that a volunteer army exploits citizens who lack civilian career opportunities? How do we determine that a doctor who has sex with his patients is exploiting them? In this book, Alan Wertheimer seeks to identify when a transaction or relationship can be properly regarded as exploitative--and not oppressive, manipulative, or morally deficient in some other way--and explores the moral weight of taking unfair advantage. Among the first political philosophers to examine this important topic from a non-Marxist perspective, Wertheimer writes about ordinary experience in an accessible yet philosophically penetrating way. He considers whether it is seriously wrong for a party to exploit another if the transaction is consensual and mutually advantageous, whether society can justifiably prohibit people from entering into such a transaction, and whether it is wrong to allow oneself to be exploited.

Wertheimer first considers several contexts commonly characterized as exploitive, including surrogate motherhood, unconscionable contracts, the exploitation of student athletes, and sexual exploitation in psychotherapy. In a section outlining his theory of exploitation, he sets forth the criteria for a fair transaction and the point at which we can properly say that a party has consented. Whereas many discussions of exploitation have dealt primarily with cases in which one party harms or coerces another, Wertheimer's book focuses on what makes a mutually advantageous and consensual transaction exploitive and analyzes the moral and legal implications of such exploitation.

Review
"Wertheimer's book is a careful and exhaustive analysis of exploitation. One may well disagree with some of his conclusions, but no one interested in the topic will be able to ignore this classic work on the topic of exploitation."--Joan L. McGregor, Philosophy in Review

"Wertheimer's book is a cornucopia of hard questions that make you realize how little we think about that so-easy-to-toss brickbat, exploitation."--Ian Hacking, Globe and Mail (Toronto)

"This is an excellent book that does more than explore a fascinating concept.... It is refined, full of distinctions that are crucial for avoiding confusion on this difficult topic and, finally, it is well written."--Brendan P. Minogue, Journal of Mass Media Ethics

The Other Enlightenment: How French Women Became Modern., by Carla Hesse

The French Revolution created a new cultural world that freed women from the constraints of corporate privilege, aristocratic salons, and patriarchal censorship, even though it failed to grant them legal equality. Women burst into print in unprecedented numbers and became active participants in the great political, ethical, and aesthetic debates that gave birth to our understanding of the individual as a self-creating, self-determining agent. Carla Hesse tells this story, delivering a capacious history of how French women have used writing to create themselves as modern individuals.

Beginning with the marketplace fishwives and salon hostesses whose eloquence shaped French culture low and high and leading us through the accomplishments of Simone de Beauvoir, Hesse shows what it meant to make an independent intellectual life as a woman in France. She offers exquisitely constructed portraits of the work and mental lives of many fascinating women--including both well-known novelists and now-obscure pamphleteers--who put pen to paper during and after the Revolution. We learn how they negotiated control over their work and authorial identity--whether choosing pseudonyms like Georges Sand or forsaking profits to sign their own names. We encounter the extraordinary Louise de Kéralio-Robert, a critically admired historian who re-created herself as a revolutionary novelist. We meet aristocratic women whose literary criticism subjected them to slander as well as writers whose rhetoric cost them not only reputation but marriage, citizenship, and even their heads.

Crucially, their stories reveal how the unequal terms on which women entered the modern era shaped how they wrote and thought. Though women writers and thinkers championed the full range of political and social positions--from royalist to Jacobin, from ultraconservative to fully feminist--they shared common moral perspectives and representational strategies. Unlike the Enlightenment of their male peers, theirs was more skeptical than idealist, more situationalist than universalist. And this alternative project lies at the very heart of modern French letters.

From Library Journal
Hesse (Berkeley; Publishing and Cultural Politics in Revolutionary Paris) offers an account of how French women used writing to transform themselves into modern individuals. Although the French Revolution did not grant women legal equality, it still freed them from previous constraints. Women burst into print in unprecedented numbers and took control of their own work and authorial identities. Hesse describes the work of many post-revolution women writers, from well-known novelists to obscure pamphleteers, and shows how they often paid a price for participating in political and ethical debates by losing their reputations, marriages, or lives. Hesse provides a unique and well-documented look at women's history by detailing this process of enlightenment. The book also includes a helpful bibliography of French women writers from 1789 to 1800. Recommended for French and women's history collections. Review
"[Hesse identifies] a (relatively precise) historical moment as being of seminal importance in one possible definition of modernity. When that has been grasped, the full ingenuity of her arguments and the considerable quality of her writing can emerge."--Richard Parish, Times Higher Education Supplement

"Hesse provides a unique and well-documented look at women's history."--Library Journal

"Carla Hesse . . . deploys Kant's ambivalent definition of freedom as the ground for a more hopeful and explicitly liberal feminist reconstruction of female agency. . . . This is a concise book on a vast topic, one that is sure to inspire further research and discussion."--Joan B. Landes, American Historical Review

"Hesse's study is persuasive not only because of its historical rigor, logical presentation and clarity of style, but also because of its explicit values. . . . [Her] liberal values offer a particularly good point of departure for her historical study of women's transition to modernity. . . . Hesse provides a thorough, well-documented and convincing explanation of women's historical impediments and achievements in their roles as modern citizens."--Claudia Moscovici, Nineteenth Century French Studies

"Short, suggestive, and brilliant. . . . A powerfully crafted historical vision presented . . . in lucid and engaging prose. . . . In her deft combination of quantitative research and critical readings, Hesse provides a model of how to pursue the social history of ideas."--David A. Bell, New Republic

"This stimulating study of French women and publishing between 1789 and 1800 contributes significantly to both the cultural history of the French Revolution and current debate about the Revolution's impact on women. . . . Hesse argues convincingly that after 1789 French women found new opportunities to define themselves in print as modern individuals and that post-revolutionary successors benefited from the new publishing realities."--Linda L. Clark, Journal of Social History

"Extremely challenging and at the same time immensely enjoyable. . . . [R]eaders will definitely benefit from the chapters, none of which is without interest."--Marie Lathers, French Review

From the Inside Flap
"The Other Enlightenment is a masterpiece of analytic clarity and historical acumen. Focusing on women's writing rather than on discourses about women, Carla Hesse shows that the French Revolution provided women with unprecedented access to print culture. Never again would the number of published women writers sink to pre-revolutionary levels. Anyone interested in women's access to bourgeois modernity will have to read this pathbreaking book."--Toril Moi, author of What is a Woman?

"Carla Hesse has given us an astonishing new look at women's struggle for independent expression and moral autonomy during the French Revolution and afterward. Denied the political and civil rights of men, literary women plunged into the expanded world of publication, answering the men's philosophical treatises with provocative novels about women's choices and chances. Lively and learned, The Other Enlightenment links women from Madame de Stael to Simone de Beauvoir in an alternate and daring path to the modern."--Natalie Zemon Davis, author of The Return of Martin Guerre

"Hesse takes the history of women and gender into exciting new territory. She gives women of the past a chance to talk back, to tell their stories, and to reveal how an alternative history can be discovered through their writings and even through the very act of writing. Hesse's groundbreaking evidence about women writers and their publications is bound to stimulate new work for years to come. Combining print history with literary and philosophical analysis, she argues a provocative and important thesis: that the growing market economy in print offered women new opportunities for self expression through fiction and for making public claims to moral autonomy. Women thus managed to define their own worlds, even as their public and private lives were legally subjugated to those of their fathers and husbands."--Lynn Hunt, University of California, Los Angeles

"Hesse combines an insightful reading of key figures in the history of French women's letters with an astute understanding of the role of print culture in the making of modern society. She has produced a highly readable, extremely persuasive book. Against those who see the rise of modern society as erecting barriers to women's full equality and independence, Hesse finds cause for greater optimism."--Joan B. Landes, Pennsylvania State University

"This book is a long-awaited tour-de-force by a major historian. It is sure to become an instant and enduring classic in French history and literary studies, a provocative and compelling argument to be reckoned with by anyone concerned about the possibilities for female subjectivity and women's full participation in modern Western culture and public life."--Margaret Waller, Pomona College
