Amazon.com Review
This book offers a unique perspective on one of our century's most complex, enigmatic, and controversial geniuses, set in the musical and political context of his time. The author is well equipped for the task: she is a cellist who studied with Mstislav Rostropovich in Moscow from 1964 to 1971, when her father was British ambassador there. Her book is a compendium of official documents, private letters, diaries, and interviews with Shostakovich's family, friends, and enemies (in Russia and elsewhere), as well as articles written especially for the book. The result is a fascinating, first-hand portrait of Shostakovich the man as husband, widower, father, and friend, and Shostakovich the composer, who--by turns officially reviled and extolled--became a symbol for the suffering of his people. Indomitably creative despite constant fear, repression, bereavement, and debilitating illnesses, his ultimate tragedy was that the political "thaw" came too late for his failing health. Naturally, many of Wilson's respondents are musicians who knew that Shostakovich encoded his music with hidden subtexts to express his secret thoughts. On the other hand, his political statements, written and spoken under duress, were often ambiguous and contradictory, and she quotes both conciliatory and hostile reactions to them. She also cites many testimonials of his spontaneous generosity to friends and colleagues in need. Among the most delightful episodes are visits by the composer Benjamin Britten and the tenor Peter Pears. The latter gives a loving description in his diary of a splendid Christmas and New Year's celebration with the Rostropovich and Shostakovich families, never even mentioning differences of language, culture, or politics. --Edith Eisler

Review
"Elizabeth Wilson has done both Shostakovich scholarship and the general reader a great service...making available for the first time a remarkable range of material, much of it specially commissioned for this book in taped interview or written form...Her book makes an important contribution to our knowledge of Shostakovich's life and times."--Eric Roseberry, The Times Literary Supplement

"Elizabeth Wilson's magnificent new oral history, Shostakovich: A Life Remembered, [is] the one indispensable book about the composer."--Richard Taruskin, The New York Times

"The most important book ever published about the greatest Russian composer of the 20th century....For the first time, Shostakovich's anguished personality comes into focus, and his emotionally devastating encounters with the Soviet government are put into trustworthy perspective."--The New York Daily News

"By far the most important book ever published about the greatest Russian composer of the 20th century. This 550-page anthology weaves together dozens of memoirs by friends and colleagues of Shostakovich, most never previously available in English and many commissioned for this book. For the first time, Shostakovich's anguished personality comes into focus, and his emotionally devastating encounters with the Soviet government are put into trustworthy perspective. Very strongly recommended."--New York Daily News

"In Shostakovich: A life remembered, Elizabeth Wilson has done bothShostakovich scholarship and the general reader a great service . . . making available for the first time a remarkable range of material, much of it specially commissioned for this book. . . . an important contribution to our knowledge of Shostakovich's life and times."--Times Literary Supplement

"The author, an English cellist who studied with Rostropovich in Moscow, has gathered numerous recollections of Shostakovich and organized them into an enormous biography that follows every step of his life. . . . Together, these diverse sources provide a mosaic portrait of a shy, fidgety, punctilious musician."--New Yorker

"Drawing on contemporary reminiscences, interviews, letters and other material from Shostakovish's friends and disciples, Ms. Wilson has stitched together a kind of collage-cum-commentary that splendidly illuminates the composer's life and times. . . . The result is a gripping portrait of Shostakovich's physical and mental sufferings under the regimes of Josef Stalin, Nikita Khruschev and Leonid Brezhnev."--Samuel Lipman, Washington Times

". . . an enthralling new biography. . . . It is a tale of musical genius, fired and nearly extinguished by oppression. . . . Courage and cowardice, nobility and self-disgust: These extremes in Shostakovich's character which informed so much of his music, have made him seem the quintessential composer not only of his own tragic times, but of our whole appalling century."--Charles Michener, The New York Observer

"Elizabeth Wilson . . . conducted interviews with and solicited short written pieces from many who knew Shostakovich. Wilson has arranged this fascinating material into a "documentary biography" in which many voices and points of view are heard. . . . its value as "documentary" cannot be overestimated."--Wilson Library Bulletin

"Shostakovich emerges from these pages not only as a musical prodigy (he could compose and orchestrate in his head as much as Mozart) but as a human being unfailingly polite and gentlemanly, touching in his weaknesses, commendable in his strengths. This volume goes a long way in providing the missing biography of one of this century's most vital creative spirits."--Opera News

"[Wilson's] book makes possible a better grasp of the composer's life and . . . [gives] insight into the tribulations of a great artist subjected to the pressures of a totalitarian regime. The author and her contributors reveal what these pressures cost Shostakovich, the effect they had on his life and work, and the nature and the extent of his efforts on behalf of others subjected to the same pressures."--Choice

"[Elizabeth] Wilson interviewed and commissioned writings from nearly a hundred of Shostakovich's family members, former students, friends, collaborators, and acquaintnces. . . . The result is a richly varied insight into one of the century's most frequently misjudged geniuses. . . . [In] Shostakovich: A Life Remembered we finally have a more balanced, insightful and quite literally diverse view of his life and work. . . . one will gain immeasurably from reading this book."--David Weininger, Boston Book Review

great biography
By Benjamin Good
I highly recommend this book. Initially, I had some reservations about the format: Wilson went to people who knew or had contact with Shostakovich and had them write essays about their experiences, which she then put together to form the book. My hesitation stemmed from the fear that the book would read like a series of seperate articles, rather than a continuous biography, but fortunately they were not realized. The book reads like a biography with a continuous and logical flow. Because most of the accounts are firsthand, there is an certain amount of intimacy and detail that even the most thoroughly researched biographies lack. Wilson pretty much lets the individual contributors speak for themselves, only inserting paragraphs of related historical and political events where necessary for context. Although the book is a biography about Shostakovich's life, work, and personality, it also drops a few clues about performance of his works. Wilson humbly declares that the book is probably not the 'definitive' biography of Shostakovich but that she felt compelled to write it because most if not all of Shostakovich's contemporaries are getting up there in years, but I'd say the book is a definite must-read for anyone interested in Shostakovich's music.

A Life Understood Through the Eyes of Others
By Philip Pogson
We have too easily forgotten that sport, art, music, science and dance were all sites where Cold War battles were fought. The deprivations of post-Revolution Leningrad combined with the Stalinist years worked to drive the naturally introverted, intense and secretive Shostakovich even more into himself.
This has made Shostakovich a fascinating topic for biographers, speculators and ideologues of all kinds. In addition, we also overlook the fact that musicians will by nature reveal themselves most fully in their art. So if we wish to understand the "real" Shostakovich, we need to turn to his music.
Given these reflections, I found this to be an informative, insightful and moving book. The technique of breathing life into the man through the eyes of others - from his Godmother to neighbours, conductors and family - built a unique multi-level picture of the man underneath the many myths. Will we ever know him fully? Probably no more than we know Shakespeare or Rembrandt both of whose art rises above their particular context.
Finally, I am greatful to Wilson because her book acted to drive me back to the music. I have since returned to Shostakovich's symphonies, chamber music and even the jazz suites with new love and energy. Well worth reading.

A Revealing Look at the Composer
By David A. Wend
If I were asked to name a book that would give a complete portrait of Dmitri Shostakovich this would be the book that I would name. Elizabeth Wilson's Shostakovich: A Life Remembered is a collection of remembrances of the composer by many people: family, friends, colleagues, admirers and some who simply observed the composer from a distance. There is a wide variety of people who relate an event of Shostakovich's life, provide background on events in the composer's life or simple relate a personal story about him. The number of sources that Ms. Wilson consulted is vast and she also had the opportunity to interview many of the people who know Shostakovich who died since this book was published.

Ms. Wilson (who met the composer when she accompanied Benjamin Britten on a visit) has nicely divided the book into sections dealing with major events, such as the "War Years" and then deals with specific events that occurred like the "Seventh Symphony" and the "Teacher and Master" concerning Shostakovich's students during the period. One of my favorite sections is an interview with Mstislav Rostropovich where he relates a story just after he had won the All-Russia competition. He bought a suit to wear for his concert performances and to celebrate Shostakovich bought a bottle of moonshine vodka that turned out to the worst drink of their lives. Such anecdotes may not be highly important to Shostakovich's professional career but say volumes about him as a human being. The book gives as complete a life of Shostakovich as one would want, and we get a complete perspective. We get insight into why some friends cut themselves off from Shostakovich late in his life from what seemed to be his support of the Communist Party but, probably more important, we get the composer's reactions from his friends and colleagues in an unvarnished way.

The book is illustrated with some interesting photographs from various periods in Shostakovich's life. I have also used this book as a reference when I wanted to know something about one of his compositions. It is a very rewarding book that should not be missed if you have an interest in Dmitri Shostakovich.

Review

A book that anyone would pick up and pursue for enjoyment, this is also a volume that no American school should be without.

(Wisconsin Library Journal)

From the Back Cover
Colonial Living, Edwin Tunis's vigorous re-creation of 17th- and 18th-century America, examines the everyday lives of those sturdy men and women who transplanted European culture to the New World. In lively text and detailed drawings, we see the earliest American-Indian-inspired huts of New England's first white settlers and the houses they learned to build to survive the cruel winters; the snug Dutch and Flemish farmhouses of Nieuw Amsterdam; the homes of the early Southern planters--along with those of African Americans, whose labor fueled the staple-crop economy.

Long research and love for his subject gave Tunis an intimate knowledge of the details of colonial experience, from earliest coastal settlement to the revolutionary era. He shares all with his readers: the building of houses, with their trunnels, girts, and hand-hewn beams; the spinning of yarn and its weaving and dyeing; the making of candles and soap; and the intricate business of cooking on the open hearth with lug poles, cranes, bake kettles, and spits. He describes the early crops and illustrates the implements and animals used to produce them. In detailed pictures, Tunis shows us the tools and products of the craftsmen--the blacksmith, the cooper, the miller, the joiner, and the silversmith.

Edwin Tunis brought the past to life with consummate skill. Rich in enjoyment, rich in information, with more than 200 drawings, his book is a warm, lively, and authentic panorama of a lost way of life.

About the Author

Edwin Tunis was a well-known artist, illustrator, and muralist. His work has appeared at the Baltimore Museum of Art, Society of American Etchers, National Academy of Design, and Victoria and Albert Museum. Colonial Living won the 1958 Thomas Alva Edison Foundation Children's Book Award. His other books include Colonial Craftsmen and Weapons, are also available in paperback from Johns Hopkins.

Excellent, informative book
By Avid Reader
My daughter and I love this book. It focuses on not only how they lived, but how they made their food, clothing, houses, etc. It's a fabulous book and I highly recommend it for those interested in reading about colonial living of the East Coast of the US.

Wonderful Social History Book of Colonial America
By Ken Roberts
Here in the 21st century, life in 18th century (and before) colonial America is quickly becoming forgotten. Programs on the History Channel (a highly questionable name for the station considering what it shows every night) tend to concentrate more on the latter half of the 20th century than on the previous centuries. It's books like this by Edwin Tunis that keep our colonial heritage alive.
"Colonial Living" covers virtually everything of the everyday lives of our ancestors. From the cities they lived in to furniture to what they ate to heating themselves to modes of travel to occupations to homes to clothing to...well, you get the picture. And speaking of pictures, this book is filled with accurate illustrations drawn by the author himself. Yarnwinders, a jack bed, carding paddles, signs, rooms, men's wigs, bricks, fire scoop, a hay fork - hundreds of excellent drawings.
The text is lively and comprehensive, giving details that compliments the sketches greatly.
It is my understanding that this book was originally written (back in 1957) for the youth market, but if the only thing that separates this book from an 'adult' history book are the illustrations, then I will gladly take this 'kids' book.
A museum in a book, that's what this is.

Tools, techniques, and customs
By bernie
"Colonial Living" is written and illustrated by Edwin Tunis who has written and illustrated several relating books. He also produced a 145 foot mural depicting the "History if Species."
This is a nice cross over book for those interested in history, every day life in The Thirteen Colonies, and craft tools.

He gives a good overview as it was intended. However there are no real depths or practicality other than an overview. For example the section on food covers a few pages and shows common cooking and eating utensils, but if you want to know how to use them or how the food is prepared you will need a book that goes more into depth. This is not in all cases there is a good page and a half covering the contents and techniques on brick making. Of course I would not want to make one from the information.

This book is a good starting place for information on Colonial Living. You will notice the absents of an index or of a Bibliography.

Review
"A major accomplishment"--Birder's World

"[T]he guide against which all others for the New World tropics will be judged."--Don Stap, Audubon

"Rarely in the history of tropical ornithology have so many waited so long and so eagerly for a field guide to appear. . . . The end result of this long process is a spectacular addition to the literature on South American birds. The plates are superb, the guide is easy to use in the field, the range maps are informative and accurate, and the text is concise while still including essential information."--Scott K. Robinson, Auk

"Part of the excellent Princeton University Press field guide series, the book describes and illustrates 1,817 species of birds to be found in Peru. It's concise (at 664 pages!), well-designed, and worth a look (just take it off the store shelf and page through it) because it demonstrates the extraordinary variety of the bird world."--Jim Williams, Minnesota Star Tribune

"Be assured that when I make my journey to Peru this summer . . . that I will be toting a copy of Birds of Peru at all times."--John E. Riutta blog

"[A] worthy successor to the original edition. . . . The plates are amazingly thorough, again considering the extent of the task involved in covering more than 1,800 species. Each facing page has a species account and map. The text for each species is limited to about one-sixth of the page, and the maps are small, but these features make this 664-page volume a real 'use-in-the-field' book. It's quite an accomplishment. Highly recommended for anyone venturing to this part of the world--how will they top this?"--Bluebird's Laugh blog

"Birds of Peru will be a great addition to any birder's library. You never know if buying this field guide is the gentle nudge that you need to purchase a plane ticket to Lima. I hope someday that my copy is battered and stained from an epic birding trip to Peru."--Radd Icenoggle, Radleyice blog

"Birds of Peru provides a complete and awesome guide to identify Peruvian birds."--Birdwatching Binoculars

"This is definitely a book I want to put to good use someday when I hopefully get to travel to Peru to see some of these birds. This guide is also highly recommended . . . for its great illustrations, range maps and easy to use layout."--Drew and Alex Lamoreaux, Nemesis Bird

May 2010 NEW UPDATED VERSION IN PAPERBACK
By S. Paci
The new updated paperback version of this book arrived recently and I have had a chance to look it over in preparation for a trip to Manu this summer. Yes, there are three new plates with 25 new birds, but other than this, it does not appear that too many other updates (some much needed) have been made. I did notice changes on several of the range maps and one plate adds an additional hummingbird illustration (to these authors a subspecies, though Clements and others consider it a full species). My original hardcover copy is full of notes re: subspecies, reclassifications, etc. and it looks like most of these notes will have to be transferred to the new paperback, something I was hoping to avoid.

That said, if you are going birding in Peru this book is an absolute must. And it is great to have it in a slightly lighter (though not as much lighter as you would think) paperback edition. I give the original effort of the authors five stars. I am giving the revised paperback edition four stars because I had hoped that more updates would have been made. Any field guide to a country like Peru is a monumental undertaking, not in the least because the situation is constantly in flux. I have already read about the discovery of a new barbet species that is not in this updated edition!

UPDATE TO MY REVIEW:
I had a chance to do a little more work with this book over the weekend and I did find a number of taxonomic updates/splits for an additional nine species have been made, making the book fairly essential even to those serious birders who already have the first edition. Page 42: Yellow Billed and Andean Teal; page 252: Black Tailed and Ecuadorian Trogan, also Violacious and Gartered Trogan; page 364: Peruvian Warbling Antbird and Yellow Browed Warbling Antbird; page 370: Spot Winged, Brownish Headed and Humaita Antbirds; page: 604: Yellow Breasted, Vilcabamba and Black Faced Brush Finches, also Slaty and Cuzco Brush Finches.

There may also be additional updates that I haven't found yet, therefore I am changing my rating to give this new updated edition five stars. I have to assume that if the authors did not make certain other updates, that they are not currently recognizing those splits.

Birds of Peru: Kindle Edition
By Jean Paul Perret Bazan
Many have written about the printed edition which is excellent, but I want to comment about the Kindle edition. I feel disappointed with the low resolution of the plates. Many subspecies names on the plates are simply impossible to read due to the low quality of the scan and most details on the birds are lost when you zoom in. Since this is a field guide intended to identify birds the plates must be scanned on high resolution, otherwise is a useless book. Also the price seems to be to high, there is only a $2 difference between the printed and the Kindle edition, one would expect that since the Kindle edition doesn't use paper it would cost much less.

Fix it, please!
By Philip W. Johnson
Beautiful book - I am very grateful to the authors for the years and years of careful effort that went into this. As a hardbound book, my one issue is the maps. Tiny little things riddled with state boundaries that even most Peruvians probably struggle with. Consider improving them in an e-book where space is not so much of an issue. The kindle edition is a big weight saver for the travelling birder. I'm using it on an ipad so I can see the color plates.
But:
* The very first plate, which is supposed to be tinamous, is a plate of antpittas!!! Get a proofreader!
* And then, search for, say, Handsome Flycatcher. Get a cup of coffee, because you're going to need it. This book is big and searching the kindle edition is sloowwww. That problem could easily be fixed in many creative ways, that's the beauty of computers. At the very front just stick in a list of all the English names, followed by the scientific name in parentheses followed by a link to the page number of the species account and the search will take seconds, not minutes. Or just put the index in the front, so it searches it first. Or modify the search so it starts at the current position and searches forward first. Or enable an index search only. Or...
* Or try searching the cloud reader version, that should be fast, right? Nope - It isn't searchable.

So, a note to birdbook authors who are porting your books to kindle or other e-readers. First, travelling birders will snap your books up (I've bought every one I can find)! So please, port them over. Next, try using them yourself in that version, get frustrated, then get a little programming help to make those editions better. Heck, modify them and sell them as an app, I'll buy those too!

Choosing Your Battles: American Civil-Military Relations and the Use of Force, by Peter D. Feaver, Christopher Gelpi

America's debate over whether and how to invade Iraq clustered into civilian versus military camps. Top military officials appeared reluctant to use force, the most hawkish voices in government were civilians who had not served in uniform, and everyone was worried that the American public would not tolerate casualties in war. This book shows that this civilian-military argument--which has characterized earlier debates over Bosnia, Somalia, and Kosovo--is typical, not exceptional. Indeed, the underlying pattern has shaped U.S. foreign policy at least since 1816. The new afterword by Peter Feaver and Christopher Gelpi traces these themes through the first two years of the current Iraq war, showing how civil-military debates and concerns about sensitivity to casualties continue to shape American foreign policy in profound ways.

Review
"[A] highly statistical but thankfully lucid study. . . . [The authors] find that non-veteran civilian elites are more likely to advocate the use of force than either military elites or civilian leaders with military experience. . . . The pattern holds historically. The authors consider a total of 111 instances from 1816 to 1992."--Chronicle of Higher Education

"Feaver and Gelpi offer important insights into the character of civil-military relations in the U.S. and into its effects on the nature of U.S. foreign policy. . . . [A]n important work whose findings have wide-ranging policy implications."--Spencer D. Bakich, Virginia Quarterly Review

"Feaver and Gelpi's intriguing and well-executed study provides a welcome contribution to scholarship in this area. In it, the authors address a subset of provocative issues within the broader study of American civil-military relations."--Risa A. Brooks, Review of Politics

From the Inside Flap
"For half a century, demands of mobilization for World War and Cold War put large percentages of Americans through military service. The abrupt end of this pattern of shared experience makes the large difference in attitudes--with civilian elites favoring more intervention and military professionals more restraint--politically critical. Feaver and Gelpi examine the many crucial facets of contemporary civil-military relations with an unusually impressive combination of comprehensiveness, rigor, and clear argument. Their conclusions will alarm some and please others, but they are important for all to understand if national security policy is to be made wisely."--Richard K. Betts, Director, Columbia University Institute of War and Peace Studies

"One of those rare works of political science that speaks directly and aptly to an issue of policy. Feaver and Gelpi show that the conventional wisdom about attitudes to military engagement and casualties is, and has been, wrong. More importantly, they explain why. One of the most important contributions to the literature on civil-military relations in years."--Eliot Cohen, author of Supreme Command: Soldiers, Statesmen, and Leadership in Wartime

"This is an important work that deserves a wide audience. Peter Feaver and Christopher Gelpi have combined qualitative and quantitative analyses to produce a major piece of scholarship on a subject of great importance. It is difficult to combine rigorous statistical methods with clear prose, but the authors manage it. The writing is clear and the material is accessible to those not trained in statistics."--John Allen Williams, Loyola University Chicago, author of Soldiers, Society, and National Security

"This book demonstrates quite convincingly that the proportion of military veterans in leadership positions in the federal government has an important impact on the propensity of the United States to initiate militarized disputes."--James Lee Ray, Vanderbilt University, author of Democracy and International Conflict

Quaternions and Rotation Sequences: A Primer with Applications to Orbits, Aerospace and Virtual Reality, by J. B. Kuipers

Ever since the Irish mathematician William Rowan Hamilton introduced quaternions in the nineteenth century--a feat he celebrated by carving the founding equations into a stone bridge--mathematicians and engineers have been fascinated by these mathematical objects. Today, they are used in applications as various as describing the geometry of spacetime, guiding the Space Shuttle, and developing computer applications in virtual reality. In this book, J. B. Kuipers introduces quaternions for scientists and engineers who have not encountered them before and shows how they can be used in a variety of practical situations.

The book is primarily an exposition of the quaternion, a 4-tuple, and its primary application in a rotation operator. But Kuipers also presents the more conventional and familiar 3 x 3 (9-element) matrix rotation operator. These parallel presentations allow the reader to judge which approaches are preferable for specific applications. The volume is divided into three main parts. The opening chapters present introductory material and establish the book's terminology and notation. The next part presents the mathematical properties of quaternions, including quaternion algebra and geometry. It includes more advanced special topics in spherical trigonometry, along with an introduction to quaternion calculus and perturbation theory, required in many situations involving dynamics and kinematics. In the final section, Kuipers discusses state-of-the-art applications. He presents a six degree-of-freedom electromagnetic position and orientation transducer and concludes by discussing the computer graphics necessary for the development of applications in virtual reality.

Review
"This book will appeal to anyone with an interest in three-dimensional geometry. It is a competent and comprehensive survey. . . . This book is unique in that it is probably the only modern book to treat quaternions seriously. . . . A valuable asset."--Aeronautical Journal

"[A] splendid book . . . everything one could wish for in a primer. It is also beautifully set out with an attractive layout, clear diagrams, and wide margins with explanatory notes where appropriate. It must be strongly recommended to all students of physics, engineering or computer science."--Peter Rowlands, Contemporary Physics

From the Back Cover

"The text is written in a clear and readable style well suited for students wishing to master fundamental quaternion concepts."--Mark C. Allman, Senior Engineer, The Boeing Company

"This is the most complete discussion of quaternions and their applications that I have seen."--Alan C. Tribble, author of A Tribble's Guide to Space

About the Author
J. B. Kuipers is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Calvin College. In addition to publishing papers and research notes on quaternions, he spent seventeen years in the aerospace industry where his work included developing applications of quaternion theory for aerospace systems. He also developed a six-dimensional graphics system and, as a consequence, is regarded by some as the founder of virtual reality.

Plainest, clearest introduction around
By wiredweird
Latitude and longitude look simple enough, at first - just put your finger in the globe, and see which horizontal line crosses which vertical. When you start doing arithmetic, though, things get weird. Measuring longitude in degrees, 179+2=-179. In degrees latitude, 89+2=89, but the longitude changes! And, when you try to figure longitude precisely at the north pole, you run into a singularity. Believe me, you don't want to be in a plane when its navigation programs run into singularities.

Those bits of strangeness all vanish when quaternions represent angles. Quaternions are a bit like complex numbers, but with three different complex parts instead of one. They have very nice mathematical properties, even better than rotation matrices, and a compact form.

Kuipers gives a clear, thorough introduction to quaternions and their uses in geometric computations. Everything is explained one step at a time, giving the reader plenty of chance to back off and try again when the discussion gets thick. The buildup is very methodical, just about every derivation is carried out in steps that are easy to follow, using legible, standard notation. Kuipers uses side bars to remind the reader about the basics under more complex discussions, keeping an awareness of where a beginner might go off the rails. Since this discusses geometric computations, illustrations are profuse.

The book is not for the reader in a hurry. There are lots of gems here, but you really do have to dig through a lot to find them. The illustrations contain all needed information, but it may take some effort to pick them apart. And, like any technical book, this assumes a reader with a certain background. In this case, intuition about 3D objects, trig, and linear algebra are compulsory, but I guess a sufficiently dedicated reader could substitute blind obedience to formulas for linear algebra. Ch.11-13 assumes calculus through partial differentials and ODEs, but many readers can skip these chapters without loss.

This is all the how and why of quaterion representations of 3D rotations. It's gently paced, and makes only moderate assumptions about the reader's background. I've never seen this material presently so clearly, from so many angles, anywhere else. Highly recommended.

Clarity and completeness
By S. Austin
The great thing about this book is the author goes through detailed expositions of every topic. So if you "get it" the first time, you can skim ahead to the next topic; if not, you can work through the proofs, step-by-step, to make sure you understand it. There's no "the proof is left as an exercise for the interested reader."

Another thing I really like about this book is that you don't need to be a mathematician to understand it (i.e. it's perfect for engineers). If there is reference to a mathematical topic, the author defines the terminology and gives you a concise explanation. He will give you enough to make it relevant to the current subject.

For example, you don't need to have a grad-school course in groups and fields to be able to understand how they relate to the specific applications of quaternions covered in the book. That cannot be said about some other books on quaternions I have been reading. About all you need here is some knowledge of vectors, matrices and complex numbers.

This book is not only tractable but downright accessible. And it is so well organized that, after reading the first few chapters, you may find the specific application of interest to you and jump straight to it.

Truly this work will be a classic
By Edward C. Barile
This book is one of the very few mathematical, engineering, physics texts that I have come across in my 37 year career that stands out as a classic to be. I read the entire book and because it is so good, it is one of the few that I actually retained.

The book SAVES TIME. It saves time because you can learn the material without second guessing what the author is trying to say, because he wrote the book to TEACH you the material, not so you could stand in awe at his skill.

Because he took this topic and made it understandable in a way that so few books of its type do, his skill is evident in his clarity.

Anyone who can teach a subject like this in a book, with no classroom instruction knows his subject cold.

This is a winner. Big time.

I want to personally thank the author for taking the time and pains to write his book for me and countless others who stumble around in the world of physics, mathematics and engineering trying to get a grasp on our massive field. His contribution shines.

The Return of George Sutherland, by Hadley Arkes

In this book, Hadley Arkes seeks to restore, for a new generation, the jurisprudence of the late Justice of the Supreme Court George Sutherland--a jurisprudence anchored in the understanding of natural rights. The doctrine of natural rights has become controversial in our own time, while Sutherland has been widely maligned and screened from our historical memory. He is remembered today as one of the "four horsemen" who resisted Roosevelt and the New Deal; but we have forgotten his leadership in the cause of voting rights for women. Both liberal and conservative jurists now deride Sutherland, yet both groups continue to draw upon his writings. Liberals look to Sutherland for a jurisprudence that protects "privacy" against the rule of majorities, as in matters concerning abortion or gay rights. Conservatives will appeal to his defense of freedom in the economy.

However, both liberals and conservatives deny the premises of natural rights that provided the ground, and coherence, of Sutherland's teaching. Arkes contends that Sutherland can supply what is missing in both conservative and liberal jurisprudence. He argues that if a new generation can look again, with unclouded eyes, at the writings of Sutherland, both liberals and conservatives can be led back to the moral ground of their jurisprudence. This compelling intellectual biography introduces readers to an urbane man, and a steely judge, who has been made a stranger to them.

From Scientific American
Clearly and cogently and even dramatically done.... Hadley Arkes leads us into the deepest jungles of constitutional thought.... His is a stimulating safari.

From The New Yorker
Arkes's work is a welcome addition to this emerging body of constitutional thought. If given the attention it deserves, it may well fulfill both objectives embodied in its title.

Review
"Advocating that the Supreme Court again espouse natural- rightsjurisprudence is an ambitious undertaking, as is attempting to rehabilitate the Supreme Court justice who, for many, personifies the ideas behind substantive due process. Hadley Arkes accomplishes both tasks with rhetorical skill and intellectual tenacity.... An important book ... that challenges us to view constitutional rights afresh through the powerful lens of natural law."--Steven J. Eagle, The Wall Street Journal

"Clearly and cogently and even dramatically done.... Hadley Arkes leads us into the deepest jungles of constitutional thought.... His is a stimulating safari."--Louis Auchincloss, The New Criterion

"Arkes's work is a welcome addition to this emerging body of constitutional thought. If given the attention it deserves, it may well fulfill both objectives embodied in its title."--Judge Alex Kozinski, National Review

A near-masterpiece of revisionist constitutional history
By A Customer
Despite the fact that constitutional historians rank George Sutherland among the 'near-greats" of the Supreme Court, the first-and only -Supreme Court Justice from Utah has been largely forgotten. If he is remembered at all, he it is only as the most able of that notorious reactionary quartet, the "Four Horsemen"-Sutherland, Van Devanter, Butler, and McReynolds- who stuggled in vain to overturn The New Deal. This is a pity, and not only because to be remembered as the most able of the Four Horsemen is akin to being remembered as the most able Italian General of World War Two. Sutherland was no blind reactionary ( And, to be fair, neither was the technically brilliant, but inarticulate Van Devanter), but a creative, often insightful jurist, whose contributions to legal theory still affect our lives today. Almost all of Modern zoning law, for example, comes from his decision in Euclid vs.Ambler, while His eloquent opinion in Powell vs.Alabama ( the 'Scottsboro Boys'case)helped to blaze the trail for the modern understanding of fair trials. Also, his opinions in U.S. vs. Curtis-Wright amnd Humphreys executor contributed much to our understanding of the scope and limits of Presidential power. If Arkes' book were merely an reminder of George Sutherlands many contributions to Constitutional law, it would be welcome. However, it is more than that, much more. The only previous scholarly study of Sutherland and his career, Douglas Paschal's A Man Versus the State, while largely sympathetic, had cast the Justice as an a disciple of Herbert Spencer and John Stuart Mill-a libertarian Social Darwinist. It is both the genius and the flaw of Hadley Arkes'brilliant, stimulating book to argue instead that Sutherland stood firmly in the tradition of Natural rights and natural Law, a tradition which , while it might be widely misunderstood ( witness, for example, the splenetic, nearly illiterate assaults on Clarence Thomas), still has an important part to play in constitutional thought. Arlkes book argues for this understanding, and for the continuing importance of Sutherland's thought, with clarity, wit and learning. It is a very fine book. Why, then do I call it only a 'near-masterpiece' and speak of it as 'flawed'.Two reasons. First, Arkes, for all his intelligence, has an excessively mechanical, rationalistic and eighteenth century view of the Natural Law.This reader prefers a more Thomistic-and, dare I say it, somewhat more liberal- approach, in which charity plays as imporatant a role as reason.Secondly, for all the insight the book offers into Sutherlands thought, it also tends to platy down some of the more unpleasant aspects ohf his jurisprudence. Why, for instance, did this champion of natural rights join Holmes in that justices worst decision, Buck vs.Bell? Is it not possible, that, for all the influence of Burlamaqui,Herbert Spencers social Darwinism also played arole in Sutherlands thought? To conclude this review on a somewhat more positive note, I will say that it is one of the most intelligent and stimulating studies of asupreme Court justice, and of the American Constitution , to appear in recent years. One can only hope that it will be followed by studies ,in the same vein , of other Justices committed to the Natural Law, such as Story, the first Harlan, and Murphy. One also hopes that the energetic Professor Arkes will edit a collection of Sutrtherlands opinions, papers, and correspondence. It might provide furthur insight into this very able 'forgotten ' justice.

Arkes on Natural Rights
By Samuel J. Sharp
In the Return of George Sutherland, Professor Arkes argues for Sutherland's place in the catalog of great Supreme Court justices. Arkes portrays a judge misunderstand by scholars of today. Rather than impose a rigid economic worldview to the cases before him, Sutherland in fact applied a consistent search for moral truths, most of which preexisted, and are thus not found in, the Constitution. In this willingness to look beyond the text for answers to pressing legal questions, Sutherland actually, in a strange jurisprudential twist, is the father of modern liberal interpretation of the Constitution.

Much of the book is devoted to Arkes rearguing the cases of years past using Sutherland, sometimes, as a guide. In fact, Sutherland disappears from long stretches of the text which is unfortunate. This is not a traditional biography. As Arkes states in the Preface, "My purpose in this book is not to write a chronicle of the life of George Sutherland but to give an account of him in the part of his life that marks the central work . . . the task of this book is to understand his reasoning and give account of his jurisprudence." Arkes does this well, but the book ultimately is a fuller account of Arkes's view of natural rights than Sutherland's.

From Publishers Weekly
The newest Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Book demonstrates the strengths of this dependable series: an understandable question and clear exposition of the answers that never fail to help readers to think like scientists throughout. Series originator Branley carefully lays out a number of scientific theories that answer the question posed in the title, giving the most space to theories developed after the discovery of large amounts of soot and iridium in rock layers. Simont's well-placed drawings and watercolors carefully amplify and expand the text. Ages 10-up.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2-- Branley tackles the mystery of what did in the dinosaurs in this addition to his popular science series. True to his intention, he provides a clear, easy-to-understand explanation of several possible causes for the dinosaurs' extinction. He includes disease, temperature change of the Earth, and even the idea that small animals devoured the dinosaurs' eggs as possible causes of death. About half the book is spent discussing the theory which claims that comet showers and the ensuing fires, ash, and dust killed the dinosaurs and their food sources. Simont's soft watercolor illustrations clearly depict, yet effectively tone down the ferocity of the subject matter for young readers. Although Branley states several times that no theory has yet been proven, the attention he gives to the comet/Nemesis theory implies it is a more valid, better-researched theory, as compared to the others which receive only a page or two of attention. He is also reluctant to question the theory; for example, how is it that mammals and some reptiles (such as turtles and alligators) survived the comet catastrophe, while dinosaurs and plants did not? Perhaps this is making a Tyrannosaurus out of a molehill, but implied messages can sometimes be as influential as obvious ones. --Cathryn A. Camper, Minneapolis Public Library

Review
"Discusses the many theories behind the extinction of dinosaurs and the techniques used by scientists to solve this great mystery. ?Handsome washes instill the reptiles with character and also convey a sense of mystery. A stellar offering." -- "BL."

This book has illustrations on each two-page spread with a manageable amount of text for young readers. The best part of the book is that it teaches the concept of theories.
