Today the United States has one of the highest poverty rates among the world's rich industrial democracies. The Failed Welfare Revolution shows us that things might have turned out differently. During the 1960s and 1970s, policymakers in three presidential administrations tried to replace the nation's existing welfare system with a revolutionary program to guarantee Americans basic economic security. Surprisingly from today's vantage point, guaranteed income plans received broad bipartisan support in the 1960s. One proposal, President Nixon's Family Assistance Plan, nearly passed into law in the 1970s, and President Carter advanced a similar bill a few years later. The failure of these proposals marked the federal government's last direct effort to alleviate poverty among the least advantaged and, ironically, sowed the seeds of conservative welfare reform strategies under President Reagan and beyond.

This episode has largely vanished from America's collective memory. Here, Brian Steensland tells the whole story for the first time--from why such an unlikely policy idea first developed to the factors that sealed its fate. His account, based on extensive original research in presidential archives, draws on mainstream social science perspectives that emphasize the influence of powerful stakeholder groups and policymaking institutions. But Steensland also shows that some of the most potent obstacles to guaranteed income plans were cultural. Most centrally, by challenging Americans' longstanding distinction between the "deserving" and "undeserving" poor, the plans threatened the nation's cultural, political, and economic status quo.

Archetypal splitting

This is an amazing collection of letters which depict the relationship of two of the greatest psychologists of all time. Naturally, there are people who interpret this relationship in different ways, especially as a very specific situation, peculiar to the development of psychology or otherwise. I think otherwise. Life is rarely linear--it's usually Normally Distributed. Things tend to go in cycles, not straight lines. The relationship between Freud the mentor & Jung the mentee is just not that unusual. In fact, it parallels that of every child (especially males stereotypically seeking independence). There comes a time to leave the nest & for the mentee to strike out on his own--just as there is a time for a new paradigm (per Thomas Kuhn's classic, "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions"). This is precisely what occurred between Freud & Jung. It's almost archetypal. There's even something of a parallel between Jung & Father Victor White in Jung's "Letters." This book has some interesting quotes from each of the two psychologists:

By Freud:

p. 119 Take my urgent advice, arm yourself with ill temper against all unreasonable demands.

p. 121 One must try to learn something from every experience.

p. 169 I have long known that one can't change people. Everyone has something worthwhile in him. We must content ourselves with getting it out of him.

By Jung:

p. 84 What people don't know surpasses the imagination, and what they don't want to know is simply unbelievable.

p. 157 one likes human beings around one and not complex-masks.

LETTERS BETWEEN THE TWO FIGURES OVER THEIR ENTIRE HISTORY

C.G. Jung was once thought of as Freud's chief disciple. These letters cover the period of 1906 (when Jung sent Freud his Studies in Word Association) until their final "break" in 1914. (There is one additional letter from Jung to Freud from 1923, when Jung was referring a patient to Freud for treatment.)

Here are some representative excerpts:

SF: "The leading lights' of psychiatry really don't amount to much; the future belongs to us and our views, and the younger men---everywhere most likely---side actively with us." (1907)
SF: "I regard (for the present) the role of sexual complexes in hysteria merely as a theoretical necessity and do not infer it from their frequency and intensity. Proof, I believe, is not yet possible." (1907)
CG: "(L)ike Herakles of old, you are a human hero and demi-god, wherefore your dicta unfortunately carry with them a semipiternal value. All the weaker ones who come after you must of necessity adopt your nomenclature, originally intended to fit a specific case." (1909)
SF: "It has occurred to me that the ultimate basis of man's need for religion is infantile helplessness, which is so much greater in man than in animals. After infancy he cannot conceive of a world without parents and makes for himself a just God and a kindly nature, the two worst anthropomorphic falsifications he could have imagined." (1910)
SF: "You mustn't suppose that I ever 'lost patience' with you; I don't believe these words can apply to our relationship in any way. In all the difficulties that confront us in our work we must stand firmly together, and now and then you must listen to me, your older friend, even when you are disinclined to." (1910)
CJ: "My evenings are taken up very largely with astrology. I make horoscopic calculations in order to find a clue to the core of psychological truth." (1911)
CJ: "If you doubt my word, so much the worse for you. I would, however, point out that your technique of treating your pupils like patients is a blunder. In that way you produce either slavish sons of impudent puppies..." (1912)
SF: "I propose that we abandon our personal relations entirely. I shall lose nothing by it, for my only emotional tie with you has long been a thin thread---the lingering effect of past disappointments---and you have everything to gain, in view of the remark you recently made in Munich..." (1913)

I loved this book mostly because I have been fascinated by Freud for many years and now I am studying Jung. To have the privilege of reading their letter back and forth is a treat. Also there are insights into current problems that Psychology still grapples over.

While Jung's main researches centered on the subject of individuation as an adult ideal, he had also a unique contribution to make to the psychology of childhood and went far in applying modern analytical concepts to educational theory and practice. The present volume is a collection of eight papers in this field.

Issu d'une famille protestante, Carl Gustav Jung etudie au college de Bale et s'interesse de pres a l'Histoire et a la mythologie. Poursuivant des etudes de medecine, il s'oriente vers la psychanalyse. En 1900, il devient assistant a l'hopital psychiatrique de Zurich. Presente a Freud en 1907, il est rapidement considere par ce dernier comme son successeur. Toutefois, les differences s'accumulent. Jung s'oppose effectivement a l'interpretation sexuelle du medecin viennois. Ainsi, la rupture se consomme en 1912. Jung entreprend ensuite de multiples voyages ethnographiques, au Kenya et en Inde notamment, qui lui permettent de mieux formaliser sa pensee. En 1921, il expose dans "Les types psychologiques" un inconscient defini par les pensees, les sensations, l'intuition et les sentiments et divise entre extraversion et introversion. Avec "L' energie psychique", il soumet l'hypothese de l'existence de deux formes d'inconscient, celui personnel et celui collectif, memoire de l'humanite vehiculant les grands archetypes mythologiques. Il devient le fondateur de la psychologie analytique.

Born in 1875, C. G. Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist and innovative thinker whose most influential ideas include the concept of psychological archetypes, the collective unconscious, and synchronicity. He is the author of numerous works, including Memories, Dreams, Reflections and Man and His Symbols. He died in 1961.

Sir Herbert Edward Read, DSO, MC (1893-1968) was an English anarchist poet, and critic of literature and art. He was one of the earliest English writers to take notice of existentialism, and was strongly influenced by proto-existentialist thinker Max Stirner.

Fordham was an international figure in the history of analysis.

great read!

LOVE this book. It is very helpful as an introduction to personality development. I do recommend getting case studies by Jung to expand more on the topics in this book. You can go either way with the details; child psychology or development of personality. His writing is very clear, he uses examples to help get his point accross. This is a very good read and I highly recommend this book and seller.

JUNG'S THOUGHTS ON CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT

Jung wrote in the Foreword to the Second Edition, "The point of view adopted in this work is psycho-biological. It is naturally not the only one possible, as indeed there are several others. Thus, more in accord with the spirit of Freudian psychology, this little piece of child psychology could be regarded from the purely hedonistic standpoint, the psychological process being conceived as a movement dominated by the pleasure principle... I have been content to steer a middle course that keeps to the psycho-biological method of observation, without attempting to subordinate the material to this or that hypothetical key principle."

Not his best work

Jung essentially ceded developmental psychology to Freud et al. Piaget is well-known in this arena--though he isn't any easier to read than Jung IMHO. But, if you are deeply interested in Jung, you'll want to read the entire Collected Works (0691074763), the 3 books of Letters (one is 1/2 Freud--ed. McGuire, the other 2 ed. Adler & Jaffe), his autobiography (Memories, Dreams, Reflections) with Jaffe, his interviews (C. G. Jung Speaking, ed. McGuire), & "Man & His Symbols" with some of his major students--made for a more general audience. I did get a couple of good quotes from this book: p. 42 "Parents should always be conscious of the fact that they themselves are the principal cause of neurosis in their children" & p. 87 "Fanaticism is always a compensation for hidden doubt."

Grade 3-6–Demi draws on the King James Version of the Holy Bible, as well as apocryphal sources such as The Book of Mary and The Life of Mary: As Seen by the Mystics, to tell her subject's story. By going beyond the traditional Bible, she is able to add details about Mary's childhood and to describe more fully her role in developing the early Church. The art and design of the book is similar to Demi's Mother Teresa and Jesus (both S & S, 2005), featuring paintings filled with bright, intricate patterns and bold touches of gold. The perspective is often flat and the pictorial elements on many pages seem to float in space. As in Jesus, the images are somewhat traditional in their depictions of winged angels and a white-haired God figure above the frame of several illustrations. The people and angels all have Caucasian features and skin tones. Children will need adult guidance to understand the text. Last year, Demi added Jesus to her list of distinguished books about religious figures. Now, she turns her considerable artistic talents to Jesus' mother, Mary, Queen of Heaven. Demi begins her story before Mary is born, when her parents, Anna and Joachim, learn that their prayers have been heard, and that they will have a child whom they will dedicate to the service of the Lord. Nor does the story end as it traditionally does--at the Crucifixion--instead it follows Mary's ascension into heaven. The information comes from The Book of Mary and Pseudo-Melito among others), both noncanonical sources, which Demi blends with more familiar gospel stories: the annunciation, Jesus' birth, and the wedding at Cana. The more obscure texts are credited, but never really explained, even in a note, and the writing throughout is sophisticated, with only a nod toward the intended audience. Yet, in some ways that barely matters; the words simply serve as a backdrop for the glorious artwork, which seems even more ornate and gilded than in Demi's previous books. Along with her familiar beautiful borders and diminutive characters, she incorporates many Jewish and Christian symbols that tie the religions together. Some of the pictures are almost whimsical, as in one delightful scene in which a garland of angels surrounds Mary. The moment of Jesus' death is moving and stark, with Mary huddled alone at the foot of the cross. Ilene Cooper

Perfect Valentine Gift

I bought this book for my son this past Valentine's Day. He had gotten Halloween Bugs in October and had enjoyed that one so much I thought I would be good for him to have another.

Since my son is 2 we had to explain to him that you do not pull the flowers out. Once we got past that, he seemed to be content with leaving the pop-ups in the book. When we got finished reading it the first time he demanded that we read it again. Even after the tenth time in a row he did not get tired of it. I find I have to hide it sometimes in order to not have to read it 20 times in the same sitting, but it never gets old watching him enjoy it so much.

My 3-year old "love bug" loved this book!!

Although the age recommendation showed a minimum of 4-years, my 3-year old immediately fell in love with this book when she got it for Valentine's Day. Although very delicate--because of the pop-up pictures, the verse and intricate pop-ups kept her rapt attention. I'm buying another copy of this wonderful book to replace the one her little brother couldn't keep his hands off. An expensive Valentine, yes--but so worth a little girl's adoration!!

Best Pop-Up Books Ever

I've purchased almost every title in this series and have yet to be disappointed by any of them. My 8-year old son requests to read them again and again and again, and now that he's reading on his own - likes to read them to himself.

Now that he's older, he is also very careful not to tear the pop-ups, but I've got to admit that there are a few titles we've bought more than once. He probably got his first pop-up book at the age of two - and although the pop-ups are quite sturdy and made for little hands to enjoy - he did manage to tear a few of them. I think this is inevitable if you want to introduce your child to pop-up books at an early age, and since the pop-up books in this series are reasonably priced - I've been more than happy to replace the ones he was a little "too hands-on" with!

What do we like about the pop-ups? Each one is a work of art - you are never disappointed when you turn the page. The pop-ups are cute, colorful, creative, and most of all - FUN. The accompanying text on each page is also good - funny rhymes, silly sayings, and sometimes even a sing-a-long song.

Of all the pop-up books we own (and we probably have fifty or more - some dating back to the thirties and forties) these are the ones we enjoy the most. We've also bought several to give as gifts to my son's friends.

Our other favorites are those by Robert Sabuda & Matthew Reinhart and there are also some excellent Harry Potter & Star Wars pop-up books if you're a fan of either of those series.

In An Author's Guide to Scholarly Publishing, Robin Derricourt divides his energy between informing potential authors about the ins and outs of scholarly publishing and training them to be the kinds of writers scholarly publishers enjoy working with. For 12 years the publishing director for Cambridge University Press (in England and Australia) and a published academician himself, Derricourt brings a tremendous amount of knowledge to his subject. Academic publishing is a world unto itself, in which publishing's accepted rules of engagement--agents, enigmatic titles, attention-getting design, publication parties--do not apply.

Derricourt, writing in epistolary style, is a hand-holder of the best kind: blunt ("the likelihood is that any particular book will not suit us"), funny (the chapter discussing peer review is addressed "Dear Judy Cation"), and very helpful. Ever so gently, Derricourt enumerates the qualities that make some academic authors so stellar, such as stylish writing, organization, and copyeditor appreciation ("the copyeditor is the only person who will have read every word of your book with care"). Distracting Format

While the author may know a considerable amount about academic publishing, the book's format -- composed of a fictional series of letters to authors who've supposedly committed mistakes in the publishing process or who've supposedly asked questions they want answered -- is distracting and keeps the author from addressing his subject in an in-depth, serious way. William Germano's book, Getting It Published, covers this subject in a more comprehensive, more easily accessible form.

Derricourt does a wonderful job of explaining many aspects of the scholarly book publishing process from the publisher's point of view. His writing style is quite entertaining and easy to read. And the book is designed well, too

It Worked for Me

When I first began the daunting task of turning my dissertation into an academic book, I had no idea where to start. I ran across this book and the light bulbs started to go on.

As an aspiring author in the Humanities, I loved the creative format--a series of "letters" to fictional authors answering the kinds of questions that all beginning authors ask, as well as several important questions that we should ask but usually don't. The format keeps an otherwise dry subject interesting, and it provides a unique window into the world of academic publishing. I also suspect that, given Derricourt's career in publishing, the letters are not entirely fictional. The book sometimes reads like a long FAQ about academic publishing, which I mean as a compliment. Derricourt has a sense of humor, too, and I desperately needed that while trying to coax/beat my dissertation into a book.

The book covers both the dissertation-to-book process and the new-book process, and it includes instructions for writing a proposal, preparing the manuscript, and responding to feedback from peer reviewers, among other topics. Because the book covers a wide range of publishing, there will inevitably be some features of specific fields that the it leaves out. And that's okay. I didn't want to read about special instructions for people planning to publish books on athletic training pedagogy anyway. The book focuses on what academic books have in common, rather that on what is unique to specific fields. (In other words, eventually you will need supplementary information on publishing in your specific field, which you will best get from other published authors in your field, not from another book on academic publishing.) Overall, the book is brief and accessible, and unlike some similar books, it doesn't waste time belaboring the obvious.

So, how helpful was this book overall? I followed Derricourt's advice, and my own book is currently being published by a reputable university press and is now available right here on Amazon: The Augustinian Theology of W. H. Auden

Dutch Orientalism examined post mortem

According to my memory Ben Boland once wrote that there is no big theory, even not e true general history of Islam in Indonesia, written by a Dutch scholar. Commenting on a book by G.F. Pijper he once wrote that the only result we have to present the scholarly community is Fragmenta Islamic. I could not find the original place of the quote, but I several though about this remark when reading a very important new book by Michael Laffan, The Makings of Indonesian Islam: Orientalism and the Narration of a Sufi Past (Princeton University Press, 2011, 301 pages).

The book wants to give two broad histories: 1) a history of Indonesian Islam according to the many written sources consulted by Laffan; 2) a history and critique of Western studies of Indonesian Islam. the book is not about independent Indonesia and not about Indonesian scholars (no Taufiq Abdullah, Deliar Noer, Alfian). It ends with the Dutch scholars of the 1930s, G.F. Pijper and Schrieke. It only has a few remarks about post/1945 giants like Clifford Geertz, not much about Anthony Johns and Merle Ricklefs who both in a very different way supported the thesis of a mystic character of the Islamic past of Indonesia. It is not a book for the beginning student of Islam in Indonesia. It is a long essay on many scholars, officials, missionaries who wrote about Islam and, of course, writes at length about the towering figure of Snouck Hurgronje. I have to admit that I found it very difficult to read: it is a very ideological or abstract theoretical discussion of rather down to earth and sober writing Dutch scholars who did not like too much theoretical discourse. Therefore it seems quite often very generalizing. From time to time, however, he has keen information about concrete facts as well. On p. 69 he criticizes a passage in my Dutch Colonialism and Indonesian Islam, p. 33/34 where I suggest that the Malay text of Book of Thousand Questions was not directly known to Van Eck and his informants in the archipelago.
