This is the most comprehensive English translation of the work of Günter Eich, one of the greatest postwar German poets. The author of the POW poem "Inventory," among one of the most famous lyrics in the German language, Eich was rivaled only by Paul Celan as the leading poet in the generation after Gottfried Benn and Bertolt Brecht. Expertly translated and introduced by Michael Hofmann, this collection gathers eighty poems, many drawn from Eich's later work and most of them translated here for the first time. The volume also includes the original German texts on facing pages.

As an early member of "Gruppe 47" (from which Günter Grass and Heinrich Böll later shot to prominence), Eich (1907-72) was at the vanguard of an effort to restore German as a language for poetry after the vitriol, propaganda, and lies of the Third Reich. Short and clear, these are timeless poems in which the ominousness of fairy tales meets the delicacy and suggestiveness of Far Eastern poetry. In his late poems, he writes frequently, movingly, and often wryly of infirmity and illness. "To my mind," Hofmann writes, "there's something in Eich of Paul Klee's pictures: both are homemade, modest in scale, immediately delightful, inventive, cogent."

Beautiful collection of German poetry

Gunter Eich was a German poet who lived 1907-1972 and who was known for the simplicity of his poems. Translator Michael Hofmann presents a unique picture of Eich in his introduction to Angina Days (a title in reference to his health in later years). In some cases, an introduction reveals too much and tries to interpret too much. Hofmann's biography of Eich resists that and instead focuses on Eich's personal life and allows the reader to contemplate and define the poetry on their own. He calls Eich's poems "humble and lived-in and somehow practical" and this collection reflects that. While the poetry is not oversimplified, each reader can likely feel as if they can successfully understand the emotions portrayed.

Hofmann also says that in translating the works, ranging over Eich's lifetime, he discovered in them "for me the source of the quiet and immense and eerie power of each: words are like stray, chance, isolated survivals after some catastrophe, of unpredictable utility and beauty." As a side note, Eich's poetry is compared to the art of Paul Klee.

Within the poetry itself, broken into sections of Eich's life, there is an array of symbolism with a focus on plants, food, landscape, and travel. Some are romantic, as in Munich-Frankfurt Express where he describes a train trip to see his beloved and "my desire to grow old in the vicinity of your voice." He can also reflect on WWII with grief in Memorial:

The moors we wanted to hike have been drained.
Their turf has warmed our evenings.
The wind is full of black dust.
It scours the names off the gravestones
and etches this day
into us.

In Dreams he combines the symbolism of travel on the earth with travel in the heart:

There are road signs,
and easily discernible river course,
lookout points in elevated positions,
maps where the lakes are in blue and the forests in green-
It's easy to find one's way around in the world.

But you, companion at my side, how hidden from me
is the landscape of your heart!
Feeling my way in the fog, I am often overcome with fear
of the thickets and the hidden precipice.
I know you don't like your thoughts to be traced,
the echo of your words is intended to mislead-
Roads going nowhere,
pathless terrain, lapsed signage.

This collection is comprehensive and reveals how Eich's outlook changes from youth through illness as he ages, since the poems are spread across 1948-1972. I found this a great exploration of German poetry.

PreS-Gr. 1. Dilly Duckling is out for a walk when she notices that one of her feathers is blowing away. Distressed, Dilly chases the feather as the wind continues to blow it out of reach. Despite help from Spike the hedgehog and Nibble the mouse, there's no getting it back. When a dejected Dilly returns home, Mama Duck informs "silly Dilly" that all her down will eventually fall out, making way for adult feathers. Even though the feather shows up in the pond, Dilly knows that she no longer needs it. There's a message here, but young children may not make the connection between their own growth and maturity and new feathers. Still, the fun is mostly in watching Dilly and her friends energetically trying to chase down the feather. Dilly bears a strong resemblance to Jane Simmons' Daisy Duck, and this book's oversize format, with artwork full of bold streaks and a lush pond setting, will look familiar. Despite the possible confusion, the two books have the same cheerful appeal, and fans of both ducklings will surely overlap. Ilene Cooper

Great book!

My 2 year old son loves this book. It is so expressive. Each time we read the book, my son has to kiss Dilly when she cries over losing her feather. And, he's laughing with Dilly by the end of the book.

Cute Story, Wrong Crop!

We had picked this book from our local library. My daughter and I were enjoying the story until we came to the mouse in the story. I have nothing against cute story book mice, however the text says the feather got caught on a corn stalk. I have no idea how, but it never got caught (and corrected) the text may say "cornstalk" but the illustrator drew wheat! That completely ruined the book for me. I'm sure there is some kid out there that thinks wheat is a cornstalk from reading this book.

In this first ethnographic study of the European Space Agency, Stacia Zabusky explores the complex processes involved in cooperation on space science missions in the contemporary context of European integration. Zabusky argues that the practice of cooperation does not depend on a homogenizing of interests in a bland unity. Instead, it consists of ongoing negotiation of and conflict over often irreconcilable differences. In this case, those differences are put into play by both technical and political divisions of labor (in particular, those of big science and of European integration).

Zabusky shows how participants on space science missions make use of these differences, particularly those manifest in identities of work and of nationality, as they struggle together not only to produce space satellites but also to create European integration. She argues that the dialectical processes of production include and depend on conflict and contradiction to maintain energy and excitement and thus to be successful. Participants in these processes are not, however, working only to produce tangible success. In her epilogue, Zabusky argues that European space science missions can be interpreted as sacred journeys undertaken collectively, and that these journeys are part of a fundamental cultural project of modernity: the legitimation of and aspiration for purity. She suggests, finally, that this project characterizes not only the institution of technoscience but those of bureaucracy and nationalism as well.

Very instructive account from inside ESA, by an outsider

My goal with this book was to learn something different about the European Space Agency. You can learn a lot about the philosophy, the goals and the scientific programmes from the ESA web site or specialized news sites. But compared to all the available literature about NASA's inside politics and inner workings, surprisingly little has been published about what actually happens inside the ESA. "Launching Europe" corrects this superbly.
The complete title of this book is "Launching Europe: An Ethnography of European Cooperation in Space Science", and on the back cover, you can read that this book should be found in the "Anthropology" section of your bookstore: this is not an error. This is neither an engineering document nor a scientific report of the ESA projects, but an in-depth analysis of the human interactions. And a very technical one: the author is a professional anthropologist, and this text really looks like an authentic anthropological research: the vocabulary is very specific, the methodology is precise, the bibliography extensive.
But even if you are not, like me, a specialist in this field, this will be a very instructive book. Indeed, the ESA science department is a very complex environment, where hundreds of people from more than fifteen countries work together on high-tech projects. In such a challenging environment, you can expect some intriguing things to happen, and the author successfully pinpointed and explained the problems and solutions devised by the participants, such as the scientist/engineer, or technical/management oppositions, the endless meetings, the pressure from deadlines or financial constraints, etc. For example, being fluent in English is not an asset, even though most of the communication is in English. It's also interesting to note that there is almost no hierarchy, but a culture of voluntarily assumed responsibilities. And since no decision can be taken unilaterally without formal hierarchy, absolutely everything goes through tense but effective negotiations. And of course, there is more.
In addition to this purely anthropological exercise, and in order to describe completely the system the people work in, the author also details the historical and structural background of the agency. Combined with the in-depth analysis, this high-level view of the system helps the reader to grasp how such a complicated system achieves its success. This complementary information will detail the ESTEC buildings, laboratories, cantina, etc. as well as the steps taken by a project from idea to satellite, from management decisions at the Paris headquarters, through the peer-review system and up to the flight approval tests.
Only one thing was missing (maybe): even if ESA cannot be directly compared the NASA, this exercise is inevitable. Asides from a few lines here and there, this book doesn't talk about NASA at all. You will then have to do this by yourself.
Overall, a good book, not (only) for space enthusiasts, but (also) for those interested in the challenges faced by those who have the courage to cooperate on an international level... and succeed.
If you want to improve you overall knowledge of ESA, I would recommend the concise but interesting book from two insiders (who actually helped define the highly successful "Horizon 2000" programme): "International Cooperation in Space: The Example of the European Space Agency" by R. Bonnet and V. Manno (1994, ISBN 0674458354). In just under 200 pages, you will get the historical and political background of the agency. For a very complete story, in 600 pages, read "A New Force at a New Frontier" by K. Madders (1997, ISBN 0521570964). You can also order (for free!) the annual reports from 1994 directly from the ESA web site.

Still a classic discussion of chronic ennui

Kuhn's work has stood the test of time. The problem of chronic ennui is one of the most important issues facing our time. A silent malady of the soul traceable back to the Ancient Greeks Kuhn leaves us in no doubt that the apathy and sadness of this malady is not merely the product of our own period - though it seems to be much more pronounced in our own time. Prodigious research, immense stamina, the work took almost ten years to complete. A largely unknown classic. See also George Steiner's 'In Blue Beard's Castle', Sean Desmond Healy's 'Boredom self and Culture', and other texts on what Schopenhauer called 'the malady of the modern age'.As a PhD researcher on the topic I feel myself to be following in the footsteps of the master. Kuhn knows that the problem may decide the fate of the human species into the new millennium.

In thousands of diary pages, he documented his experiences in the camps, his resettlement in Chicago and drafting into the Army on the eve of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and his postwar life as a social worker in New York City. Kikuchi's diaries bear witness to a watershed era in American race relations, and expose both the promise and the hypocrisy of American democracy.

Jim and Jap Crow follows Kikuchi's personal odyssey among fellow Japanese American intellectuals, immigrant activists, Chicago School social scientists, everyday people on Chicago's South Side, and psychologically scarred veterans in the hospitals of New York. The book chronicles a remarkable moment in America's history in which interracial alliances challenged the limits of the elusive democratic ideal, and in which the nation was forced to choose between civil liberty and the fearful politics of racial hysteria. It was an era of world war and the atomic bomb, desegregation in the military but Jim and Jap Crow elsewhere in America, and a hopeful progressivism that gave way to Cold War paranoia.

Jim and Jap Crow looks at Kikuchi's life and diaries as a lens through which to observe the possibilities, failures, and key conversations in a dynamic multiracial America.

Giving a face to HIV/AIDS in Brazil

Biehl's Will to Live takes on the challenging task of examining the institutional forces behind Brazil's lauded HIV/AIDS response while also highlighting the personal stories of some of the individuals most impacted by Brazilian HIV/AIDS policy. By pairing interviews with policymakers and physicians with interviews of Bahia's poorest AIDS patients, Biehl demonstrates the complexity of the state of the epidemic in modern-day Brazil.

Biehl's talents as an ethnographer are most apparent in his longitudinal fieldwork at Caasah, a grassroots health service in Salvador, which allows him to track how HIV/AIDS influences the life paths of impoverished AIDS patients. Through his skilled interviewing, Biehl fully captures the life stories of his interviewees - giving a face to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Brazil and fully engaging the reader.

Additionally, Biehl examines issues of pharmaceutical governance, the challenges associated with a "magic bullet" approach to health care, and the influence of HIV/AIDS activism on AIDS policies in Brazil. Torben Eskerod's powerful images of those most vulnerable to the disease beautifully complement Biehl's precise yet descriptive prose.

This fascinating follow-up to Biehl's first book, Vita: Life in a Zone of Social Abandonment, winner of the Margaret Meade Award for 2007, leaves the reader considering the kinds of changes that need to be made to worldwide HIV/AIDS programs to make them more successful. Despite the great information provided in the text, the book is on the heavy side full of statistics and interview that might be a little overwhelming for the reader. The Pictures presented are fantastic and portraits a full reality of patients with AIDS. The book might take some time to read, and a full understanding and interpretation of the information requires meticulous attention to key details.
