Review
"Unlike typical textbooks . . . [Statistical Mechanics in a Nutshell] presents statistical mechanics as a more general theory with broader applications. . . . A graduate student or researcher who wants to explore the applications of statistical mechanics would be very well served by this book."--Choice

"Peliti's Statistical Mechanics in a Nutshell is a fantastic reference for those who know the subject, teach it, or need a quick technical reminder, especially on the topic of phase transitions, which are consistently featured in modern-day discussions. . . . Statistical Mechanics in a Nutshell provides the more general overview, with topics such as the renormalization group method. It includes a good mix of fundamental thermodynamics, phase behaviour, and other key subjects."--Physics Today

From the Back Cover

"This book provides a clear, no-nonsense approach to the basic ideas of the subject as well as an introduction to some of its modern applications. The main ideas are well illustrated by examples and exercises. There are important sections on numerical methods and dynamics, and a final chapter on complex systems gives the reader a foretaste of current research. The volume will serve as an excellent introductory graduate text for students in physics, chemistry, and biology."--John Cardy, University of Oxford

"Statistical mechanics has seen an extraordinary broadening of application in recent decades, from economics and the social sciences to computer science and biology. Statistical Mechanics in a Nutshell combines in one accessible book the main classical ideas of statistical mechanics with many recent developments. It should have a wide readership among young (and also less young) scientists seeking a clear view of modern statistical physics."--Bernard Derrida, école Normale Supérieure

"This superb text provides a balanced and thorough treatment of statistical physics. From thermodynamics and basic principles to renormalization group, dynamics, and complex systems, the presentation is a model of clarity, and the level of detail is highly appropriate for graduate students or advanced undergraduates. Each chapter concludes with a helpful list of recommended further reading. I see this becoming a standard textbook for the next generation of PhD students."--Daniel Arovas, University of California, San Diego

"This is an excellent and comprehensive introduction to statistical mechanics in all of its aspects. The exposition is stimulating and concise but always clear, avoiding pedantic details. Statistical Mechanics in a Nutshell has the potential to become a standard reference."--Giovanni Gallavotti, Sapienza University of Rome

Elementary And Advanced Text
By G. A. Schoenagel
A fine text from the Princeton Series, " In a Nutshell " .
First, an excerpt from the review in Journal of Statistical Physics (Ben-Avraham, 2012) :
"...remarkably self-contained and comprehensive introductory textbook..."
The Preface: author's stated goal: "..to be both a beginner's and advanced course."
The first five chapters are tailored for the beginner, the remainder decidedly more advanced.
The later chapters are largely independent of each other.
Next, my impressions:
Students should first read Appendices A, B & C : Legendre Transformations, Saddle Point Methods, Probability.
If the Appendices present no mathematical difficulty, then that encompassed between these covers should be accessible.
First (brief) Chapter, encompasses the Ideal Gas and derivation (via Maxwell's five postulates) of The Maxwell Distribution.
Next, Thermodynamics presented via a postulational (deductive) approach, and this clearly enunciated in 45-pages.
(Akin, in spirit, to Callen's more advanced tome). Exercise 2.2 (parts 1-8, Page 24) is not to be eschewed.
Take Note : Entropy as Extensive, Convex, Monotonic Function is elucidated to much effect in the remainder.
Statistical Mechanical fundamentals presented in the third chapter, lucidly expounding the basics:
phase space, observables, Louiville, quantum states, variational principle, Canonical and Grand Canonical Ensembles.
The Overarching Principle: Entropy in terms of accessible volume in Phase Space (Boltzmann).
Section 4.3.3 (Page 110) Variational derivation of Fermi and Bose Statistics, will entail student participation in working out
the manipulative details. That is, read along with paper and pencil to achieve any degree of competency with the text.
Chapter Five (Phase Transitions) is a delight; expressions derived for duality of Ising Model in two dimensions (Page 142),
Mean Fields supported via variational approach (Page 148) and exposition of Einstein's theory of fluctuations (Pages 157-160 ).
Chapter Five ends "the beginner's part". Later chapters (6-10) expound advanced material. In particular, I highlight:
Chapter Six (Renormalization Group) discussing connections between field theory and Einstein's theory of fluctuations.
Chapter Nine (Dynamics) surveys Brownian Motion and Stochastics, offering interplay between heuristic and analytical formalism.
A good supplement to Chapter Nine is the excellent, brief, An Introduction to Stochastic Processes, by Don Lemons (2002).
Scattered throughout we find in-line exercises (some merely manipulative, others asking for proofs--see Page 299, #9.1).
Also, recommended readings (especially important in order to supplement the brevity), culminating in a lengthy bibliography.
The exposition is terse, but lucid. Derivations generally straightforward to comprehend. (Chapter Six, probably the hardest).
While the back cover states "...requires only elementary calculus and elementary mechanics," it behooves the reader to
possess rather more background than this to fully digest the contents (see Page 243: Cauchy Residues, or, Dirac Delta).
An excellent Chapter Six, Renormalization Group, requires a bit more fluency in mathematical manipulation :
Cumulant Expansions, Differential Equations, Recurrence Relations; Page 206 , providing example of an involved derivation
of Equation 6.189 "...by passing to the Fourier transforms, we arrive at..." Integral Equations make entrance in Chapter Seven.
Another review notes, Physics Today (August 2012) :" It includes a good mix of fundamental thermodynamics, phase behavior,
and other key subjects. Even so, I do not see it as a standalone book for introductory students."
Thus, both elementary and advanced, this is a comprehensive textbook well worth consideration.
Highly Recommended.

Thus I can only recommend this book to someone who is highly experienced already ...
By Ian Hunter
Having read a number of statistical mechanics textbooks (Kardar stat of particles, Kardar stat of fields, Chandler, Pathria, and Huang), this ranks as one of the most problematic of all of them. At times it is extremely slow, but often skips lengthy parts of essential proofs. Thus I can only recommend this book to someone who is highly experienced already with the basics of thermo and stat mech. My largest pet peeve is that its notion is extremely inconsistent with existing literature. As a result I cannot even advise the use of it as a quick reference, as you have no idea whether F is helmholtz, or Gibbs, n is molarity of particle density, E is internal energy or total energy. At times this notation switches within a single problem.
That said it is functional, albeit with a large amount of work on the user side so I cannot give it a 1. I'd still recommend it over Huang and Pathria for info about Landau theory.

For math majors only
By Marsupial Tail
The text is good, until the author gets to the equations, at which point he totally loses the reader (me, at least). The author frequently skips steps in the equation derivations and expects the reader to follow while performing multi variate chain rule differentiation in his head. I have read many textbooks in mechanics and research in comp. chem and bio and the author still manages to lose me every two pages or so. Maybe this is good for geniuses, but for regulars maybe a more standard textbook like Atkins or Dill is better

Excellent plates makes it a must-have for birding in the region
By Jack Holloway
Basics: 2009, softcover, 496pp, field/identification guide, 213 color plates of all 1,000+ species in the region; range maps

This is another top quality book produced by the authors for the eastern region of Africa. Upon opening this book, you'll recognize many of the plates from their earlier work, "Field Guide to the Birds of East Africa" (see #6 below). You'll also see many new plates along with modifications of prior ones.

The artistry is very good, easily making this book equal to or better than any other field guide on African birds. The 213 color plates illustrate all 1,000+ species found in the four "Horn" countries of Eritrea, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Somalia (plus the island of Socotra, which belongs to Yemen). Nearly every bird is shown with multiple (2-5) drawings that display excellent detail. The Yellow Wagtail has 13 different illustrations that compare the wide variation of this species. The plates do a great job at showing variations between genders, ages, and subspecies. I especially appreciated the extra effort that went into separating out the many subspecies. Additional focus seems to have been given to in-flight poses for many of the non-passerines.

A brief paragraph is given for each bird across from its illustration. Although the amount of text may seem light, the information is very informative, to the point, and precise. About 80% of the information is on identification. A couple more lines are dedicated to habitat, distribution notes, and voice. You may want to take note of the font size, which is small and thin; consequently, you might want to have your reading glasses handy.

The range maps - one for each bird - shows the resident, breeding, and non-breeding ranges in three different colors. These maps reflect the bird's range within only the four countries and artificially stop at the political borders. The maps show very good detail; however, this is sometimes difficult to make out due to the shaded highland regions in the background and to the rather faint gray boundaries that separate the countries. Ranges of birds with a very restricted distribution (e.g., Sidamo Lark, Ash's Lark, Djibouti Francolin, Black-backed Cisticola) can be difficult to see with just a small dot representing the range. Inserting an arrow would have been helpful. Making a more prominent note of the 70+ endemics would also have been appreciated, versus simply burying the word "endemic" within the text.

In case you're wondering if you would need this book over the authors' prior book for East Africa, the answer is "Yes, if you are visiting any of these four countries." Twenty percent of the birds found in the Horn are not in the other book. Also, when there is overlap of the species between the two regions, the authors' have modified the plates to reflect the plumages of the local subspecies.

This is a superb guide that will be essential for birding in these countries. Being the only complete book for this region makes it even more indispensible.

Birds of the Horn of Africa
By Ted W. Peterson
This is another excellent bird guide by the authors. On a recent trip to Ethiopia, I found this book to be an indispensable companion. The drawings are outstanding as is the text on each bird. The range maps and in particular the elevation guides were very helpful in this geographically variable country. The details of this guide are well covered in previous reviews and this book would be a welcome addition to the library of those who love to travel in Africa. I left this guide with our local semi-bird guide to encourage his growth in birding. He was both emotional and appreciative to receive this book. I bought a new one on my arrival home.

The Devil in Silicon Valley: Northern California, Race, and Mexican Americans, by Stephen J. Pitti

This sweeping history explores the growing Latino presence in the United States over the past two hundred years. It also debunks common myths about Silicon Valley, one of the world's most influential but least-understood places. Far more than any label of the moment, the devil of racism has long been Silicon Valley's defining force, and Stephen Pitti argues that ethnic Mexicans--rather than computer programmers--should take center stage in any contemporary discussion of the "new West."

Pitti weaves together the experiences of disparate residents--early Spanish-Mexican settlers, Gold Rush miners, farmworkers transplanted from Texas, Chicano movement activists, and late-twentieth-century musicians--to offer a broad reevaluation of the American West. Based on dozens of oral histories as well as unprecedented archival research, The Devil in Silicon Valley shows how San José, Santa Clara, and other northern California locales played a critical role in the ongoing development of Latino politics.

This is a transnational history. In addition to considering the past efforts of immigrant and U.S.-born miners, fruit cannery workers, and janitors at high-tech firms--many of whom retained strong ties to Mexico--Pitti describes the work of such well-known Valley residents as César Chavez. He also chronicles the violent opposition ethnic Mexicans have faced in Santa Clara Valley. In the process, he reinterprets not only California history but the Latino political tradition and the story of American labor.

This book follows California race relations from the Franciscan missions to the Gold Rush, from the New Almaden mine standoff to the Apple janitorial strike. As the first sustained account of Northern California's Mexican American history, it challenges conventional thinking and tells a fascinating story. Bringing the past to bear on the present, The Devil in Silicon Valley is counter-history at its best.

Review
"Pitti is a scholar with an eye for the telling detail and a passion for social justice that turns his monograph into both a saga and a manifesto."--Jonathan Kirsch, Los Angeles Times Book Review

"Pitti's book . . . serves to correct a Mexican American historiography that has focused almost exclusively on southern California. Pitti argues that northern California has been too dynamic economically to be ignored by historians of ethnic minorities. His analysis focuses on the entwining of economic development, racism, and the formation of racialized Mexican communities over two centuries."--Donna R. Gabaccia, American Historical Review

From the Inside Flap
"Set in a valley of immense wealth and extensive poverty, Stephen Pitti's expansive history of Latinos in the San Jose region stretches across a vast period of history, highlighting both the enormous contribution of Mexican-origin people to the area's economy, culture, and political development and the 'devil of discrimination' that has shaped growth in the Silicon Valley from the beginning. A masterful accomplishment!"--George Sanchez, University of Southern California.

"Vestiges of the Devil in the form of historical racist ideologies and social inequalities from California's Spanish, Mexican, and American periods stubbornly persist in today's Silicon Valley. Stephen Pitti presents the seldom-told and hard-to-find causes of this dark and sometimes violent and discriminatory side of Silicon Valley's history, describing its continuing detrimental effects on its old and still emerging Latino population, which has been left behind again in the latest wave of economic success."--Fernando R. Zazueta, Founding Chairman of the Board, Mexican Heritage Corporation of San Jose

""The Devil in Silicon Valley is a beautiful piece of work--sweeping narrative, compelling argumentation, and crisp writing throughout. Pitti demonstrates how San Jose is simultaneously central and peripheral to the main currents of Chicano/mexicano history. He helps readers make sense of why Mexicans were racialized in specific ways at specific times. And he adds new insight into the variety of ways ethnic Mexicans identify themselves and organize. This is an outstanding book."--David Gutierrez, author of "Between Two Worlds

thoroughly researched and readable
By Craig Chalquist, PhD, author of TERRAPSYCHOLOGY and DEEP CALIFORNIA
As part of my doctoral research into the history of California, I've read several books on the history of Santa Clara County. Most emphasize the "pioneer" (read: white colonization) days, and the rest the technical magnificence of the Valley of Silicon Delight.
This new important work delineates the history of ethnic Mexicans in the county, particularly its East Side. From the poisonous mines of Almaden to the poisonous laboratories of the West Side, it has been ethnically based labor for low pay that has allowed the county to develop in all its prolific economic richness. The author's book provides an overview of these dynamics through research, figures, facts, and eyewitness accounts.
The "devil" mentioned in the title has to do with racism, and the book goes beyond the usual sociological and psychological explanations of racism to emphasize its classist underpinnings in a supposedly classless society. Also emphasized are the creative responses in opposition to it as ethnic Mexicans have made their voices heard and refused to be subjugated without meaningful forms of culturally enhancing assertiveness. Highly recommended.

Best Book on the History of Latinos
By A Customer
This is quite a book: a smart, easy to read, and important study of Latinos in California from the early 19th century to the present. Specialists and non-specialists alike will find here an engaging narrative guided by impressive (even stunning) historical research. Pitti provides the first accurate and sensitive portrait of the San Jose area's development, and he does so while showing how Northern California developed in relation to Mexico and to the wider history of "race" in the United States. Moreover, THE DEVIL IN SILICON VALLEY explains the many ways in which Mexicans and Mexican Americans responded to discriminatory treatment over time. The portrait of Latinos and their politics given here will be critical reading for anyone who seeks to understand Mexican Americans, the politics of immigration, and many other aspects of the multicultural United States in the years to come. Not to be missed!

By the sweat of their brow, the wealth of CA was built...
By A Customer
This book is an incredible contribution to understanding California and the West. The author has a good eye for detail, and he tells a vivid story. Most important, he offers incisive analysis of race, labor and community in the Silicon Valley. The book is also enjoyable to read because the author has a very nice writing style, and he knows how to use his subjects' own insights to prove his arguments convincingly. This book should give activists, public officials, and residents a lot to grapple with. Highest possible recommendation!

Through a Speculum That Shines: Vision and Imagination in Medieval Jewish Mysticism, by Elliot R. Wolfson

A comprehensive treatment of visionary experience in some of the main texts of Jewish mysticism, this book reveals the overwhelmingly visual nature of religious experience in Jewish spirituality from antiquity through the late Middle Ages. Using phenomenological and critical historical tools, Wolfson examines Jewish mystical texts from late antiquity, pre-kabbalistic sources from the tenth to the twelfth centuries, and twelfth- and thirteenth-century kabbalistic literature. His work demonstrates that the sense of sight assumes an epistemic priority in these writings, reflecting and building upon those scriptural passages that affirm the visual nature of revelatory experience. Moreover, the author reveals an androcentric eroticism in the scopic mentality of Jewish mystics, which placed the externalized and representable form, the phallus, at the center of the visual encounter.

In the visionary experience, as Wolfson describes it, imagination serves a primary function, transmuting sensory data and rational concepts into symbols of those things beyond sense and reason. In this view, the experience of a vision is inseparable from the process of interpretation. Fundamentally challenging the conventional distinction between experience and exegesis, revelation and interpretation, Wolfson argues that for the mystics themselves, the study of texts occasioned a visual experience of the divine located in the imagination of the mystical interpreter. Thus he shows how Jewish mystics preserved the invisible transcendence of God without doing away with the visual dimension of belief.

Winner of the 1995 Sarah H. and Julius Kushner Award, National Jewish Book Council

One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 1995

Winner of the 1994 Excellence in Book Publishing Award, American Academy of Religion

"Massive, magisterial. . . . Wolfson has amassed an impressive array of texts to establish the foundational importance of seeing God for Jewish mysticism . . . and his book formulates many questions that will undoubtedly occupy subsequent investigators as they grapple with the significance of its findings. . . . This book comprises a manifold contribution to our appreciation of Jewish mysticism and Jewish intellectual history in the Middle Ages."--Jeremy Cohen, American Historical Review

"Energy and excitement . . . burst forth from page after page of this remarkably wide-ranging yet tightly argued work. . . . Wolfson's work is scholarship in the grand tradition--sweeping in scope and references, precise in analysis and argumentation."--Everett Gendler, Theological Studies

"A learned, authoritative and scrupulously documented study of visionary experiences among medieval Jewish prophets and mystics."--Earle J. Coleman, Menorah Review

"Arguing that kabalistic experience is first and foremost a visual rather than an aural experience . . . Wolfson traces the subject in rich detail, from its biblical origins through the mystical sources of the talmudic and posttalmudic era. . . . With the publication of this major study, Wolfson has confirmed his position as one of the leading students of medieval Jewish mysticism."--Choice

From the Back Cover

"Wolfson brilliantly shows that the visionary mode of religious experience is central to Jewish spirituality from antiquity through the late Middle Ages . . . . A landmark study from one of our most gifted scholars."--Elliot Ginsburg, University of Michigan

Splendid!

Kabbalah is one of those mysticisms I had always wondered about. and wasn't able to get into, though I tried with Green. Didn't work. I can safely say that after trudging through hundreds of pages of "Through a Speculum That Shines" I have received much more than an inkling about a few medieval Jewish mystics and their joint effort, Zohar. Using impeccable scholarship as a ploy, Wolfson takes us into the inner sanctum of medieval hermeneutics in a homoerotic fellowship of scholars in 13th century Castile. He tickles my mind. Also recommended is the chapter on Wolfson in Kripal's Roads of Excess, Palaces of Wisdom.

Brilliant but very dense book
By A Customer
I rate this book a 10 in academic brilliance but only a 3
in presentation. There is no doubt that Dr.Elliot Wolfson
is a world class scholar in the field of Jewish Mysticism.
However I had to wind my way through extremely dense
scholarship to get at the material. I unfortunately
find this to be an annoying trait of most books in
this genre... Overall I rate this book highly and would
recommend it... but be prepared to invest the time and
effort...

Melancholia of Freedom: Social Life in an Indian Township in South Africa, by Thomas Blom Hansen

The end of apartheid in 1994 signaled a moment of freedom and a promise of a nonracial future. With this promise came an injunction: define yourself as you truly are, as an individual, and as a community. Almost two decades later it is clear that it was less the prospect of that future than the habits and horizons of anxious life in racially defined enclaves that determined postapartheid freedom. In this book, Thomas Blom Hansen offers an in-depth analysis of the uncertainties, dreams, and anxieties that have accompanied postapartheid freedoms in Chatsworth, a formerly Indian township in Durban. Exploring five decades of township life, Hansen tells the stories of ordinary Indians whose lives were racialized and framed by the township, and how these residents domesticated and inhabited this urban space and its institutions, during apartheid and after.

Hansen demonstrates the complex and ambivalent nature of ordinary township life. While the ideology of apartheid was widely rejected, its practical institutions, from urban planning to houses, schools, and religious spaces, were embraced in order to remake the community. Hansen describes how the racial segmentation of South African society still informs daily life, notions of race, personhood, morality, and religious ethics. He also demonstrates the force of global religious imaginings that promise a universal and inclusive community amid uncertain lives and futures in the postapartheid nation-state.

Review
Finalist for the 2013 Melville J. Herskovits Award, African Studies Association

"Hansen's analysis of the 'mutual nonrecognition' between citizens of India and African origin and his critical interrogation of the concept of diaspora are especially powerful. . . . The book will be an asset to scholars and students seeking to understand urban South Africa, transnationalism, and religious transformation."--Choice

"Hansen's book is definitely a very important one. . . . [S]tudents of segregation, ethnic conflict, urban space, identity, religion, migration, music and cinema will all find something of interest here. More generally, Melancholia of Freedom offers a fascinating insight into the fate of minority groups, and the boundary work they engage in. . . . Hansen's account allows us to better understand the processes through which minorities maintain identity and sociability in difficult contexts."--Juliette Galonnier, booksandideas.net

"As depressing as this conclusion is, the author makes a compelling case for his interpretation. He brilliantly weaves the present into the past, and explains convincingly the foundation of anxieties that prevail in Chatsworth."--Surendra Bhana, Journal of Natal and Zulu History

From the Back Cover

"With profound insight, Hansen explores the struggles of South African Indians to take possession of their new political and cultural liberty since the end of apartheid. Showing how they are haunted by a past they cannot openly mourn and bereft of the ambiguous certainties once ensured by a racist state, this compelling and highly original book calls on us to rethink the complex challenges that attend the meaning of freedom everywhere."--Jean Comaroff, University of Chicago

"This excellent book provides a subtle and convincingly argued analysis of the 'embarrassment' inherent in belonging to a community which was marginal-within-marginal to the South African mainstream. In exploring complicities and dependencies as well as forms of resistance, and in fusing together issues of politics, popular culture, and religion, it takes a substantial step beyond much of the literature on postapartheid South Africa."--Deborah James, London School of Economics and Political Science

"Melancholia of Freedom is an extraordinarily powerful and eloquent account of postapartheid realities. Given the depth and breadth of this sensitive and insightful book, and the vast array of important issues covered, it will no doubt become a classic ethnographic text on contemporary South Africa."--Steven Robins, University of Stellenbosch

About the Author
Thomas Blom Hansen is professor of anthropology and the Reliance-Dhirubhai Ambani Professor of South Asian Studies at Stanford University, where he also directs the Center for South Asia. His books include The Saffron Wave and Wages of Violence (both Princeton).

Shakespeare's Festive Comedy: A Study of Dramatic Form and Its Relation to Social Custom, by Cesar Lombardi Barber

In this classic work, acclaimed Shakespeare critic C. L. Barber argues that Elizabethan seasonal festivals such as May Day and Twelfth Night are the key to understanding Shakespeare's comedies. Brilliantly interweaving anthropology, social history, and literary criticism, Barber traces the inward journey--psychological, bodily, spiritual--of the comedies: from confusion, raucous laughter, aching desire, and aggression, to harmony. Revealing the interplay between social custom and dramatic form, the book shows how the Elizabethan antithesis between everyday and holiday comes to life in the comedies' combination of seriousness and levity.

"I have been led into an exploration of the way the social form of Elizabethan holidays contributed to the dramatic form of festive comedy. To relate this drama to holiday has proved to be the most effective way to describe its character. And this historical interplay between social and artistic form has an interest of its own: we can see here, with more clarity of outline and detail than is usually possible, how art develops underlying configurations in the social life of a culture."--C. L. Barber, in the Introduction

This new edition includes a foreword by Stephen Greenblatt, who discusses Barber's influence on later scholars and the recent critical disagreements that Barber has inspired, showing that Shakespeare's Festive Comedy is as vital today as when it was originally published.

Review
Winner of the 1961 George Jean Nathan Award for Drama Criticism

"Well-considered, subtly thought-out commentaries that move easily between structural analysis of the larger actions and sensitive dissection of local textures . . . a first-rate work of impressive imagination."--Modern Philology

From the Back Cover

"Shakespeare's Festive Comedy is the best book on the subject that I know. The book is well and clearly written, and I should think would fascinate the general readers. I think it is indispensable for students of Shakespeare's comedy."--Francis Fergusson

"I can think of no other book that has had such a powerful influence on the ways in which Shakespeare has been taught over the past thirty years. Shakespeare's Festive Comedy was a book ahead of its time. Barber revolutionized the ways that Shakespeareans thought of comedy in relation to its social setting--especially festive comedy. Others have built on his argument but nobody has really improved on his keen, central insight."--James Shapiro, Columbia University

"C. L. Barber is the most compelling of the anthropological critics and his book, Shakespeare's Festive Comedy, is to my mind far and away the most illuminating yet to appear on its subject. He is compelling for many reasons--a mind both intricate and deft, a sensitivity quick to the accommodation of esthetic form to the intricacies of psychological function, a humanity benignly tolerant and inclusive. . . . The especial merit of Barber's criticism lies in its sensitive exploration of the individual working out of the release-clarification formula in five separate plays. Each, he discovers, 'tends to focus on a particular kind of folly that is released along with love--witty masquerade in Love's Labour's Lost, delusive fantasy in A Midsummer Night's Dream, romance in As You Like It, and in The Merchant of Venice, prodigality balanced against usuary.' Twelfth Night, to complete the list, focuses on misrule and its complementary folly of time-serving."--Arthur M. Eastman, in A Short History of Shakespearean Criticism

About the Author
C. L. Barber was a fellow of the Folger Shakespeare Library and a world-renowned Shakespeare scholar. His books include "The Whole Journey: Shakespeare's Power of Development" and "Creating Elizabethan Tragedy: The Theater of Marlowe and Kyd."

Shakespeare's Comedies and Cultural Anthropology
By Dharma
The author sets out to establish a connection between the early festive comedies of Shakespeare, and the long-standing traditional celebrations in rural England during holiday periods such as Christmas, Shrove Tuesday, MidSummer's Eve, and May Day. Using 16th Century sources, he establishes a connection between these informal celebrations, plays, and progresses, and some of the characters, situations, and structure of the Comedies "Love's Labor Lost" a "Midsummer Night's Dream" and "Twelfth Night." He teases out of these sources the structure of humor, irony, and contradiction which enabled the rural people to poke fun at their lords, the landowners, and the church. He calls these festivities "Saturnalia" although they are more likely connected to early English or Germanic forms. Undoubtedly, this approach is useful in uncovering the meaning of topical references, common titles of playacting or Misrule, and establishing the audience's expectations at the time of their original performance.

Unfortunately, the authors exposition is unnecessarily obtuse. His arguments are wandering, and his sentences are garbled. The frequent quotations from the plays are a welcome break from the turgid and at times completely meaningless explanatory paragraphs. This density is increased by the long chapter on "The Merchant of Venice" which seems to me almost completely mistaken. There are almost none of the elements which Barber has been clarifying in the earlier comedies in TMOV. He tries to extend his argument to include forms of humor, but this fails to clarify his intent. He tries to extend his cultural argument to show how Shakespeare enlarged the role of humor in drama, but fails to show how the earlier comedies relate to this achievement. It is a weak crutch to hold up an interpretation of one of Shakepeare's most popular plays.

From an historical point of view (published in 1959), this book holds an essential place in the recent trend of Shakespearian scholarship towards locating and referencing the plays in the time and culture in which they were written.

Muslims and Jews in France: History of a Conflict, by Maud S. Mandel

This book traces the global, national, and local origins of the conflict between Muslims and Jews in France, challenging the belief that rising anti-Semitism in France is rooted solely in the unfolding crisis in Israel and Palestine. Maud Mandel shows how the conflict in fact emerged from processes internal to French society itself even as it was shaped by affairs elsewhere, particularly in North Africa during the era of decolonization.

Mandel examines moments in which conflicts between Muslims and Jews became a matter of concern to French police, the media, and an array of self-appointed spokesmen from both communities: Israel's War of Independence in 1948, France's decolonization of North Africa, the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, the 1968 student riots, and François Mitterrand's experiments with multiculturalism in the 1980s. She takes an in-depth, on-the-ground look at interethnic relations in Marseille, which is home to the country's largest Muslim and Jewish populations outside of Paris. She reveals how Muslims and Jews in France have related to each other in diverse ways throughout this history--as former residents of French North Africa, as immigrants competing for limited resources, as employers and employees, as victims of racist aggression, as religious minorities in a secularizing state, and as French citizens.

In Muslims and Jews in France, Mandel traces the way these multiple, complex interactions have been overshadowed and obscured by a reductionist narrative of Muslim-Jewish polarization.

Review
"Mandel offers new perspectives on the factors at play in deteriorating Jewish-Muslim interactions. She challenges theories that concentrate on the Middle East and argues that they obscure dynamics in France that have more directly influenced the situation. This concise account, which highlights instances of interethnic cooperation, is chronologically organized and underscores how the legacy of French colonialism created separate paths for the thousands of North African Muslims and Jews that settled in France because of decolonization."--Choice

"I found this an enjoyable and illuminating read. . . . [I]t is a worthwhile book which illuminates one of the pressing problems of our time."--Ruth Barbour, Open History

"Muslims and Jews in France is a remarkably concise and clear analysis of the complex relationship and mutual constitution of the two communities. Mandel has a knack for making the paradoxes of her subjects accessible, making this book necessary reading for anyone interested in contemporary French history and politics, Jewish history and Muslim-Jewish relations: instead of just lamenting the news, it allows us to think through it critically."--Arthur Asseraf, French History

"Muslims and Jews in France is a most in-depth, sophisticated piece of work that warrants a lot of attention and needs to be read; particularly in light of an on-going conflict where there appears to be no end in sight."--David Marx, David Marx: Book Reviews

"For those who prefer thoughtful historical analysis to slogans, Mandel's book is one place to turn. What one finds is that post-war Jewish life in Europe in general, and France in particular, belies the tidy narrative still being constructed."--Simon J. Rabinovitchm, Haaretz

"[A] masterful analysis."--Jean-Philippe Dedieu, Sociology

"Muslims and Jews in France: A History of Conflict, by Maud Mandel, offers a valuable historical portrait of relations between the two most significant religious minorities in France, and Europe, Jews and Muslims."--Shana Cohen, Journal of Muslims in Europe

"In this balanced and sensitive study, Mandel offers a detailed assessment of the development of Muslim-Jewish relations from the immediate post-war years to the late 1980s. . . . Mandel's thoughtful analysis raises important questions for future research. Overall, this is a valuable consideration of a complex topic, and one that will be of benefit both to historians of decolonisation and left-wing mobilisation, and also to those more broadly interested in the controversies which continue to fire the French political imagination."--J. Wardhaugh, English Historical Review

"Based on exhaustive research, Muslims and Jews in France condenses half a century of complex inter-ethnic relations in a little more than hundred and fifty pages of text (with 80 pages of notes!) and succeeds in giving a clear picture of the interaction between these two minority communities in France. Recommended to all academic libraries."--Roger S. Kohn, Association of Jewish Libraries Reviews

"Outstanding. . . . A significant achievement."--Richard S. Fogarty, American Historical Review

"Lucid. . . . [An] important new book."--Lisa Moses Leff, Journal of Modern History

From the Back Cover

"Mandel deftly analyzes the polarization of positions concerning Muslims and Jews in France while giving a dramatic example of how social reality and language may themselves conflict. As she points out, social violence between the two groups has been rare, while the increasing polarization of discourse has proceeded apace. Sure to raise some hackles, her book is a provocative must-read."--Nancy L. Green, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris

"Mandel reveals how the conventional opposition between Muslim and Jew has obscured a more complex pattern of interethnic relations in France. At the same time, she demonstrates that the language of ethnic and religious discord has itself had a powerful impact on Muslims and Jews alike. In a study that combines sophistication with clarity, Mandel provides a compelling historical account of an issue that continues to shape the present."--David Feldman, Birkbeck, University of London

"Using a wide variety of sources and focusing on local events in Marseille, Mandel deftly shows how a specifically French history interacts with international events to produce conflicts between Jews and Muslims. She provides new and important insights into the nature of the conflict, the political groups that produced it, and the ways in which perceptions of each group have been shaped."--Joan Wallach Scott, author of The Politics of the Veil

By Reading Jews and Muslims in Paris
This is a terrific book. It is all the more necessary to read it in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo massacre. The book is based upon a tremendous amount of research into numerous archives and published sources. Mandel does something that is really hard to do: she peels back layers and layers of contemporary perceptions and gets beneath them to reveal a very complex story that is neither politically correct nor viscerally satisfying to any interested parties. Muslim and Jewish groups and individuals, she shows, really only "became" what we now call "Muslims and Jews" over time. A host of forces, from communal leaders' way of talking about Muslims and Jews, to colonialism and the process of decolonization, to the Israeli-Arab conflict, to the way multiculturalism was articulated in France in the 1980s, shaped the notion that Muslims and Jews are overriding labels for these individuals and that the two groups are in almost inevitable conflict. The book helps us to understand both the long-term roots of recent events in Paris, and the way that they were hardly inevitable. That Mandel tells this complicated story with analytical rigor, artful writing, concision, and an evident human compassion for all concerned makes this book truly excellent.

Busy Equating and Excusing
By Steven Baum
If you are looking for a book that rationalizes Muslim antisemitism in France, then this is for you. Unfortunately, Mandels arguments should have emphasized the past 1500 years of Islamic antisemitism and easily extend to the global antisemitism problem, but they do not. Some interesting insights that may speak to Muslim rage, but nothing to explain why the 1,500 years of genocidal anti-Jewish rage is there to begin with unless one goes down the kill the kaffir/infidel path and she would rather look anywhere else. For a fuller understanding go Bostom, McCarthy or any of the brave Muslims critical of Islamic antisemitism e.g Salim Mansur, Brigitte Gabriel, Wafa Sultan and so on.

The prosperous Jewish community living today in Turkey and Morocco ...
By Sameer Obeidallah
The prosperous Jewish community living today in Turkey and Morocco side by side with Muslims in harmonious way is indication that religion is a positive contributor in our relations. Just and fair policies will only produce a civilized conflict over issues that we disagree upon, but unjust policies will make such disagreements very violent. I agree with research methodology of the book but I do not necessarily agree will all conclusions. The book shows that human behavior irrespective of faith and religion is what leads to such violent conflicts.
