A Century of Debt Crises in Latin America: From Independence to the Great Depression, 1820-1930, by Carlos Marichal

Carlos Marichal contends that the boom-and-bust cycles of Latin American foreign loans result mainly from the fluctuations of the world economy, rather than from errors made in Latin America itself. Marichal shows that the present debt crisis is only a part of an overall pattern in Latin American history--cycles of loan boom and subsequent debt crisis that are heavily influenced by fluctuations of international trade and capital flows. He also reveals the significant role played by those who implement debt policies. Examining the strategies of both lenders and borrowers, he makes it clear that foreign loan negotiations are not only financial tools but also political instruments with broad economic and social consequences.

The book analyzes in detail the four major debt crises that took place in Latin America during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Marichal's focus is comparative, since the contracting of foreign loans and their repayment were problems common to virtually all nations of the region. He devotes special attention to explaining the links of these debt crises to the international financial panics of 1825, 1873, 1890, and 1929. The epilogue compares the debt crises of the past with the contemporary Latin American debt crisis.

The Early Years of Art History in the United StatesFrom Brand: Dept. of Art and Archaeology Princeton Univer

Art history became established as an academic discipline in the United States between 1865 and 1895, when courses were introduced not only at Yale, Princeton, and Harvard, but also at Vassar, Syracuse, Wellesley, Rockford Female Seminary, Radcliffe, and Bryn Mawr. The prominent early role of the women's colleges and smaller universities is just one of the areas investigated in this volume on the genesis and early development of art history in the United States. Other essays focus on single departments of art history, examining the early subjects and methods of American art history and the way in which its practitioners responded to and assimilated contemporary developments in other fields, particularly history, the sciences, and philosophy. A final section examines some of the great scholarly personalities that dominated the field in the early years of this century. The volume includes a complete reprint of E. Baldwin Smith's 1912 survey The Study of the History of Art in the Colleges and Universities of the United States (Princeton).

The contributors include Pamela Askew, Lauren Weiss Bricker, John Coolidge, Julius Held, Sybil Kantor, George Kubler, Marilyn Aronberg Lavin, Phyllis Williams Lehmann, Hayden Maginnis, Agnes Mongan, Henry Millon, Donald Preziosi, Michael Rinehart, Linda Seidel, Claire Richter Sherman, Craig Hugh Smyth, Mary Ann Stankiewicz, David Van Zanten, and Edward Warburg.

Review
"[This book] represents the most expansive study of Egyptian society in transition yet produced, both voluminously documented and self-critical in its use of papyrological evidence. . . . A tremendous contribution to our understanding of social, economic, and administrative activity in early Byzantine Egypt--and therefore to our knowledge of the late Roman Empire as a whole."--David Frankfurter, Bryn Mawr Classical Review

"This excellent book assesses the society, economy, and culture of Egypt in the fourth century. . . . Whether dealing with changes in diet or the legal rights of slaves [Bagnall] paints an extraordinarily vivid picture of a century that straddles the end of the Classical world and the beginning of something entirely new."--Choice

An excellent picture of late Roman Egypt, with one major caveat
By DAJ
This is a rather scholarly and specialized book, an examination of Egyptian society in its chosen period rather than a history of events. Bagnall limits his scope in several ways. For instance, "late antiquity" can sometimes extend as late as the seventh century, but this book only covers the third, fourth and fifth. It does not cover Alexandria, which in some ways was very culturally distinct from the rest of Egypt. For that reason, and because there's so little surviving evidence from the Nile Delta, Bagnall mostly discusses the Nile Valley. Bagnall also leans heavily on the evidence from contemporary papyri, his specialty, because there isn't a lot of archaeological study of this period and the literature that describes events after the fact is often distorted by biases.

In other ways the book is very wide-ranging. The introduction discusses the nature of the evidence and how to evaluate it. The subjects for each chapter are the environment; cities; country villages; the relationship between city and country; people and families; power and social class; languages, literacy, and ethnicity; religion; and how the transformation of Egypt in this era reflects changes that affected the entire Mediterranean region. Each of these topics is discussed in great depth.

The one major caveat (or the only one I'm knowledgeable enough to discuss) is about the chapter on religion, which doesn't make the situation in Egypt look quite as complex or turbulent as it was. Bagnall discusses "paganism", Judaism, and Christianity but ignores Manichaeism. He discusses sects and schisms within Christianity but seems to underestimate their significance. By analyzing the dates of inscriptions at temple sites, he shows that traditional Egyptian temples were in financial decline as early as the second century, with individual cults dying out at different times in the third, fourth, and fifth centuries—in many cases before Christianity was powerful enough to push them into extinction. While all that is true, Bagnall ignores popular religious practices, which may have continued long after the temples stopped functioning. David Frankfurter pointed out these problems in a review of this book and wrote Religion in Roman Egypt largely in response to it. Frankfurter's work has also been criticized, so the debate continued with Philae and the End of Ancient Egyptian Religion, From Temple to Church, and The Archaeology of Late Antique 'Paganism'.

To get a full understanding of Roman Egypt, one should ideally understand Alexandria, distinct though it was. Alexandria in Late Antiquity and Riot in Alexandria both cover this period in the city's history.

an excellent reference to own
By Francesca Jourdan
This book discusses the economy and society of Byzantine and Roman Egypt, from 284 AD to the fifth century. Providing excellent archaeological sources, consisting mostly of papyri, the author has provided a well-documented and detailed account of the civilization, covering many topics : the environment, the people, the language, the cities, as well as taxation and religion. A scholarly book for the interested.

Empire for Liberty: A History of American Imperialism from Benjamin Franklin to Paul Wolfowitz, by Richard H. Immerman

How could the United States, a nation founded on the principles of liberty and equality, have produced Abu Ghraib, torture memos, Plamegate, and warrantless wiretaps? Did America set out to become an empire? And if so, how has it reconciled its imperialism--and in some cases, its crimes--with the idea of liberty so forcefully expressed in the Declaration of Independence? Empire for Liberty tells the story of men who used the rhetoric of liberty to further their imperial ambitions, and reveals that the quest for empire has guided the nation's architects from the very beginning--and continues to do so today.

Historian Richard Immerman paints nuanced portraits of six exceptional public figures who manifestly influenced the course of American empire: Benjamin Franklin, John Quincy Adams, William Henry Seward, Henry Cabot Lodge, John Foster Dulles, and Paul Wolfowitz. Each played a pivotal role as empire builder and, with the exception of Adams, did so without occupying the presidency. Taking readers from the founding of the republic to the Global War on Terror, Immerman shows how each individual's influence arose from a keen sensitivity to the concerns of his times; how the trajectory of American empire was relentless if not straight; and how these shrewd and powerful individuals shaped their rhetoric about liberty to suit their needs.

But as Immerman demonstrates in this timely and provocative book, liberty and empire were on a collision course. And in the Global War on Terror and the occupation of Iraq, they violently collided.

Review
"The book makes a very compelling case that imperialism has always been a centerpiece of the American project. Its brisk and readable style makes it useful for courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels."--Paul T. McCartney, Journal of American History

"Empire for Liberty deserves a wide audience of students, scholars, and even general readers. Immerman provides crucial, poorly understood background that helps place recent controversies in a broad context, and he offers fresh analysis of some of America's most colorful and complicated thinkers about America's place in the world."--Mark Atwood Lawrence, History Teacher

"Overall, Immerman has written one of the best descriptions and analyses of 'American empire'--its meaning, evolution, and key figures that have impacted the idea. Empire for Liberty is essential reading for students and enthusiasts of American history and the United States' place in and approach to the world, historically and contemporarily."--Stefan Fergus, Civilian Reader

"In this penetrating, lively account that introduces readers to diplomatic history in a most painless way, Immerman offers case studies of six public figures whose choices affected the ever-increasing power of the U.S."--Choice

"Immerman has produced a masterly if controversial conspectus that leads the reader far beyond the six men featured in the book."--Gill Bennett, RUSI Journal

"Empire for Liberty makes important contributions by demonstrating how U.S. efforts to expand its empire gradually pushed it farther from the East Coast and further from its constituting ideals. . . . Empire for Liberty puts a mirror in front of us, forcing us to accept the complexity of designing a moral foreign policy that still serves a national interest."--Barak Mendelsohn, Political Science Quarterly

"Given the directness, the clarity, and the analytical rigor with which Richard H. Immerman has assessed American imperialism, he obviously was not intimidated by the words, the concept, or U.S. imperial practices."--Joseph A. Fry, Marine Corps University Journal

"Empire for Liberty should be mandatory reading for anyone seeking to better understand how and why notions of empire and liberty drove the American experience, and the extent to which this nexus remains central to understanding contemporary US engagement with the rest of the world."--Andrew L. Johns, Canadian Journal of History

"This book is a welcome addition to the growing body of scholarly work that grapples with the notion of America as an empire. . . . [T]he essays in this book well repay reading by anyone who wonders about the big questions that swirl around America's rise to global prominence."--Frank Ninkovich, Historian

From the Back Cover

"Empire for Liberty places both the theory and the practice of empire inside history. Richard Immerman's complex, ironic account of the American empire and its relation to the concept of liberty is an essential analysis of how the United States became the kind of power it is today and where it might now be going."--Marilyn B. Young, New York University

"Immerman, one of the most accomplished and distinguished historians of twentieth-century U.S. foreign relations, tackles a subject of enormous importance. This short book fills a vacuum by presenting a brisk but analytically challenging synthesis through the lives of six individuals who played pivotal roles in the growth, evolution, and maturation of the American empire."--Robert J. McMahon, author of The Limits of Empire: The United States and Southeast Asia since World War II

"Game over. With the appearance of Richard Immerman's brilliantly conceived and incisive book, the post-9/11 competition to map the origins, evolution, and present-day afflictions of the American empire has ended. Empire for Liberty sweeps the field."--Andrew J. Bacevich, author of The Limits of Power: The End of American Exceptionalism

"This is a superb book about a timely subject. Immerman tackles the idea of empire, a concept that Americans have preferred not to talk about and historians have shied away from. Given the importance of the topic and the ongoing debate over the future of U.S. foreign policy, this book should attract a readership beyond academia."--George C. Herring, author of From Colony to Superpower: U.S. Foreign Relations since 1776

"Forceful, engaging, and provocative. Immerman makes a significant contribution to American history by synthesizing the ways representative policymakers have conceived of the question of American empire. Empire for Liberty will be a well-read and important book."--Jeffrey A. Engel, editor of The China Diary of George H. W. Bush

Empire for Liberty
By G. Polley
From the standpoint of understanding America's recent history, Empire for Liberty is an exciting book. American exceptionalism, manifest destiny, liberty, American expansion from a collection of thirteen British colonies to the greatest empire the world has ever seen (though some will argue that point) - all of those things that are so prominent in today's political maneuverings and pundit rants - are shown to be deeply embedded not only in the American psyche, but in American history. Though some will argue that the U.S. has never sought empire, historian Richard Immerman shows that, in fact, it has been a part of our thinking from Benjamin Franklin and his compatriots to the present day.

What seems to bother its critics is that liberty and empire fit together like oil and water. The notion of empire seems to subvert the whole idea of liberty which, in fact, it does. Yet they are the engine that has driven American commercial, military and political expansionism and dominance from the beginning. The progression and dominance of the American empire have been steady and unyielding from the day the Pilgrims landed on what became the Massachusetts Colony. Anyone standing in the way has been removed, shoved aside or, where possible, assimilated.

Thomas Jefferson, for whom the idea of liberty was of central importance, found it difficult to reconcile liberty and empire. As the American empire expanded, he came to think of it as an empire that would promote America's concept of liberty around the world. It would be an empire for, not of liberty. And therein lays a major contradiction: Empires have to do with security, prosperity, and the projection of power and greatness; liberty has to do with freedom. America's claim that it is preserving and promoting liberty leads to conflict when liberty and freedom are defined in American terms and America's security concerns become paramount, which happened at the beginning of the Cold War when Eisenhower's Secretary of State John Foster Dulles established what Immerman calls an "Empire for Security" to confront the Soviet Union and Communist China that Dulles thought of as empires of evil. From there the U.S. road led to what Immerman calls "the collision of empire and liberty at Abu Ghraib and Guantànamo."

When an empire promotes liberty it is inevitably paternalistic, dominant and intended to be accepted by others "because it is the best," which unavoidably leads to confrontation and conflict. As we saw at Abu Ghraib and Guantànamo, it also leads to violations of human rights and excusing (or ignoring) the blatant human rights violations of allies, as the U.S. has done with Israel for over sixty-two years. Both have badly damaged America's reputation in the world, and both are inexcusable; yet Guantànamo remains unresolved, and Israel continues its predatory treatment of the non-Jewish population of the Occupied Territories without a word of disapproval from the Obama administration, calling our commitment to liberty into question.

It is the chapter on Paul Wolfowitz that is the most revealing in relation to current U.S. history and politics. In his mind there is a dichotomy between America those who are perceived as "evil" (Iran, North Korea and Saddam's Iraq). Those who are "good" represent America's politics of liberty, those who are "evil" stand in the way of them. These are defined in terms of America's missionary impulses of exporting her concepts of liberty and her national interests, which are seen as identical. In Wolfowitz' mind, "the United States must remain engaged ... until it had ridded the world of all those tyrants who [hold] in contempt the values and liberties that the United States [stand] for. Monsters cannot be contained... They [have] to be defanged before they [can] bite. Wolfowitz became a convert to preemption."[1] "[T]he United States must support constructive policies and programs that [co-opt] potential opposition and [generate] a tidal wave of support for American leadership."[2] "Destroying monsters" in Wolfowitz' mind "was the prerequisite for establishing an American empire and an American empire was the prerequisite for an Empire for Liberty"[3] No interference was to be permitted.

Wolfowitz' missionary zeal, combined with his myopic vision quickly became an arrogance that bordered on the delusional. As Immerman says, it "led to what may turn out to be the greatest strategic blunder in U.S. history, a blunder that could prove fatal to the American empire."[4] The blunder was the decision to invade Iraq, decapitate its leadership, and free its people who, in Wolfowitz' mind, would welcome the Americans much as the French had done in Paris at the end of World War II. There was no need to plan for an occupation, as the newly-freed Iraqis, grateful for their freedom, would create an American-style democracy to replace Saddam's dictatorship. Our military would be in and out in six weeks' time. I still remember Defense Secretary Rumsfeld gleefully chortling about it.

Reality has proven to be quite different. The fragile fabric of Iraqi society exploded in internecine warfare and terror, terrorists swept into the country, thousands of American lives were lost, over a million Iraqis were killed and millions more uprooted and injured. Over seven years later (not six or seven weeks) American troops and installations are still there, though no longer in a combat role. It was an enterprise born of the ignorance of arrogance, an ignorance that blinds its afflicted with the inability to see. Most, if not all of American leadership still doesn't see it.

The Tragedy of the American Empire
By Paul Gelman
The chances are that when the reader picks up to read this tiny book,he will wonder or be in doubt whether it is possible to write about such an enormous subject concerning the theory and practice of American Imperialism in less than 250 pages of text. However, this impression will soon evaporate.
Richard Immerman's new book is one of those few that can present an argument in a very concise and precise way.In his introduction, the author explains that his purpose"is not to judge the American empire in terms of good or bad....Rather, it seeks to persuade the reader that America is and always has been an empire"(p.4)By picking up six different individuals who influenced U.S behaviour in a variety of ways, the book shows the "trajectory of the rising American Empire from its inception to the present, analyzing waht the phrase means and how the meaning has evolved".
It was Thomas Jefferson who famously labeled the United States the "Empire of Liberty".What the meaning of "liberty" entails is even more difficult to define than "empire".Broadly speaking,Immmerman's view is that by building an empire the United States has frequently done evil in the name of good.In the times of George Washington the empire was responsible for the expansion and security of a large expanse of territory that inluded many peoples of diverse races and nationalities. In the nineteeth century, the meaning of empire changed;after 1850,white Americans, blacks,Native Americans,Mexican Americans and others challenged the central governmen's authority to deny them self-rule.The empire that America created in the twentieth century was the most powerful empire in world history. Its rival Soviet empire, and the antecedent British one, pale in comparison. Its global leadership, the technological innovations, the manufacturing gross domestic product far eclipse all competitors. The military superiority and its growth, the commercial muscle and the world organizations the US helped to establish provided potent mechanisms for global management.
Benjamin Franklin is the first individual to begin the list of individuals who shaped Amerian imperialism.Franklin was "the foremost believer in an expanding American empire" and the one who consciously articulated the "first conscious comprehensive formulation of 'Manifest Destiny', and he personified the link between the American and British empires expressed in the reciprocal principles which allowed the empire to function properly.
John Quincy Adamn follows. This Secretary of State was the one who insisted that America had to be an empire of,and not for, liberty. He turned his back on what he judged to be an empire of slavery and he also pronounced himself against the notion that Americans must go abroad in order to destroy various monsters.Adams identified slavery as an "evil that perverted human reason and tainted the very sources of moral principle";he wanted it banned everywhere and hoped, for the sake of Union, that the Peculiar Institution would die a natural death. He was a firm believer in George Washington's caution against international political entanglements, although we are told that Adams was far from being an isolationist.America's purpose was to cement liberty within the United States. Thus, the priciples he advocated became the famous Monroe Doctrine.Adams did not hesitate to condem and indict Anrew Jackson for the extermination of Indians whom " we have been driving like swine into a pen west of the Mississippi".He was the most resolute and celebrated opponent of the Mexican War waged by President Folk. One of his disciples was William Henry Seward, who strongly believed the United States could exercise political control of foreign territories without bearing the costs of establishing colonies. He proposed to negotiate reciprocal treaties, acquire scattered startegic outposts across the Pacific and purchase Alaska in order to facilitate the Chienese market.
The next in line is Henry Cabot Lodge, who accepted Webster's dictum:"Liberty and Union now and forever".He was responsible for supporting an aggressive policy exercised by Mckinley and Roosevelt in the 1890s and the first decade of the twentieth century.Lodge believed that US imperialists were agents of international reform and did not care very much about the anti-imperialists like Mark Twain, the industrialist and magnate Andrew Carnegie or the Democratic presidential aspirant William B.Bryant, even when the horrible nes about the crimes in the Philippines reached the American public.Lodge's arguments rested on racial premises and he did not believe in the equality of races. It came as no surprise to anyone that Lodge also strongly supported s a policy of restricting immigration in the name of keeping America's racial purity. He bitterly resented Wilson's ideals and ideas as well as the famous Fourteen Points which formed the foundation of the peacemaking process after WW1.John Foster Dulles combined Wilson's crusading moralism with Lodge's faith in force and wrote a damning indictment of the traditional European empires. He was agaisnt America's colonialism and was a Cold War zealot who regarded the USSR as the Evil Empire or,to put it in his words, "the empire against liberty".
The last chapter is about Paul Wolfowitz, who extended the Manichean view perpetuated by the Bush administration.Wolfowitz is,rightly in my view regarded as the "Ugly American",who had influenced the Bush policy makers into adopting a policy of lying, cheating and truth-twisting-a thing for which the American people are still paying the price these very days.
This book is a brilliant synthesis and analysis of the ways the American conceptions of empire came to fruition and the way this empire is going these
days.It is a provocative and riveting book that should be read by anyone who wants to learn about the American foreign policy and its tragedies.

Elektra: A Play by Ezra PoundFrom Brand: Princeton Univ Pr

This critical edition of Ezra Pound's Elektra marks the most significant appearance in twenty years of a "new" work by the controversial poet. Composed in the early months of 1949, while Pound was under indictment for treason and hospitalized by court order in Washington, D.C., this hitherto unpublished version of Sophocles' play documents a critical stage in the poet's writing career: with his subsequent rendition of Sophocles' Trachiniae and his ongoing translations from the Chinese classics, it signaled his return to sustained composition and his eventual decision to resume his life work, the Cantos. The success of Carey Perloff's Classic Stage Company debut of Pound's play in 1987 has already demonstrated the interest of the theatrical community in the work, and this presentation of the text, with critical apparatus, is a major event in Pound studies. The edition serves as a kind of practical workshop in translation, particularly in its exposition of Pound's discussions with his collaborator, Rudd Fleming.

Richard Reid demonstrates in his introduction that Pound's choice of the Elektra was of crucial significance. In the play Sophocles confronts many of our most deeply held cultural assumptions: those concerning the family, the community, the claims of religion and justice, and language itself. As anyone familiar with the works of Pound will readily recognize, these issues are central in his own writings. The Elektra clarifies the formal, thematic, and psychological dilemmas seen in his work following the achievements recorded in the Pisan Cantos. This play and Pound's version of the Trachiniae can lead to a reassessment of his entire oeuvre in the context of this century's history. It will be essential reading for admirers of Pound's poetry, for students of the art of translation, and for directors and actors interested in performing the drama of ancient Athens on the modern stage.

From Library Journal
While under indictment for treason and confined to a hospital in 1949, Pound temporarily abandoned his Cantos to collaborate with Richard Rudd on this relatively unknown treatment of the Sophocles tragedy. Elektra was produced on the stage in 1987, but has never appeared in print before. A new work by an author of Pound's stature is a welcome addition to the canon, and this one will be of interest to both drama and poetry collections.

Theory of Linear Poroelasticity with Applications to Geomechanics and Hydrogeology, by Herbert F. Wang

The theory of linear poroelasticity describes the interaction between mechanical effects and adding or removing fluid from rock. It is critical to the study of such geological phenomena as earthquakes and landslides and is important for numerous engineering projects, including dams, groundwater withdrawal, and petroleum extraction. Now an advanced text synthesizes in one place, with one notation, numerous classical solutions and applications of this highly useful theory.

The introductory chapter recounts parallel developments in geomechanics, hydrogeology, and reservoir engineering that are unified by the tenets of poroelasticity. Next, the theory's constitutive and governing equations and their associated material parameters are described. These equations are then specialized for different simplifying geometries: unbounded problem domains, uniaxial strain, plane strain, radial symmetry, and axisymmetry. Example problems from geomechanics, hydrogeology, and petroleum engineering are incorporated throughout to illustrate poroelastic behavior and solution methods for a wide variety of real-world scenarios. The final chapter provides outlines for finite-element and boundary-element formulations of the field's governing equations. Whether read as a course of study or consulted as a reference by researchers and professionals, this volume's user-friendly presentation makes accessible one of geophysics' most important subjects and will do much to reduce poroelasticity's reputation as difficult to master.

Landmark book in geomechanics
By Ben Clennell
This book is one of the most useful I have come across in recent years. Poroelasticity is a challenging field, but rewarding to those who make the effort to study it. Wang does an excellent job, leading the reader from basic principles to a detailed understanding-with this book you can leapfrog dozens of more arcane works and get to grips with real problems. Yet, if you need the detail, a wide range of previous works are referenced, and put into historical perspective: a true work of synthesis. I hope this book will stimulate more Earth Scientists and Engineers to follow Wang's lead. Figures are as admirably clear as the writing. Only spoiled by the drab cover! This book covers quasi-static poroelasticity theory-consolidation and so on.
Now all we need is for someone brave to do the same job on dynamic poroelasticity!

Excellent book on consolidation
By Arnold Verruijt
This is a wonderful book, with a wealth of information, and very clearly written. I regret having overlooked it for several years. It also contains many worked examples, from a large variety of references.

Great review of theory
By Kris
This book does a good job of deliberately reviewing the theory of poroelasticity. It brings together how the field was developed independently from hydrology and rock mechanical views. He does a good job of comprehensively (albeit tersely) covering the myriad of different formulations of the poroelastic problem, and all the coefficients that arise. This book is an excellent resource if you have two papers which use different conventions and don't know how to relate them.

In the Realm of the Diamond Queen: Marginality in an Out-of-the-Way Place, by Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing

In this highly original and much-anticipated ethnography, Anna Tsing challenges not only anthropologists and feminists but all those who study culture to reconsider some of their dearest assumptions. By choosing to locate her study among Meratus Dayaks, a marginal and marginalized group in the deep rainforest of South Kalimantan, Indonesia, Tsing deliberately sets into motion the familiar and stubborn urban fantasies of self and other. Unusual encounters with her remarkably creative and unconventional Meratus friends and teachers, however, provide the opportunity to rethink notions of tradition, community, culture, power, and gender--and the doing of anthropology. Tsing's masterful weaving of ethnography and theory, as well as her humor and lucidity, allow for an extraordinary reading experience for students, scholars, and anyone interested in the complexities of culture.

Engaging Meratus in wider conversations involving Indonesian bureaucrats, family planners, experts in international development, Javanese soldiers, American and French feminists, Asian-Americans, right-to-life advocates, and Western intellectuals, Tsing looks not for consensus and coherence in Meratus culture but rather allows individual Meratus men and women to return our gaze. Bearing the fruit from the lively contemporary conversations between anthropology and cultural studies, In the Realm of the Diamond Queen will prove to be a model for thinking and writing about gender, power, and the politics of identity.

From Booklist
Tsing ventured to Indonesia to study the Meratus Dayaks. After years of research devoted to knowing more about their lives in a South Kalimantan rain forest, Tsing has produced a densely worded study that manages to incorporate a lively perspective on gender issues, as well as examine the interactions between the remote group and powerful Indonesian officials who govern. Her interests also led Tsing to spend time with a female leader regarded as a shaman, Oma Adang. In sharing her knowledge of the culture and many of its individuals, Tsing reveals a great deal about the Meratus Dayak. But even more, in her passionate reprise at book's end she creates amazingly effective links between the diverse cultures of the West and those of the Far East. Alice Joyce

Literally the worst book ever written.

Literally the worst book ever written. Do yourself a favor and withdrawal yourself from the class if your professor is idiotic enough to require you to read this. I used it to start a fire the day I finished it.

Manages to hook together several ethnographic schools.
By A Customer
I found Tsing's book to be very informative about the Meratus culture of Indonesia, as well as very pertinent to the recent battling between the postmodernist and femminist thought schools within ethnographic literature. She manages to use a combination of more traditional Enlightment techniques (statistics, generalizations, strong authoratative voice) as well as postmodernist techniques (polyvocality, poetry, socio-historical context for the culture, relativism to its surroundings). The reading is easy, and fun, because she puts a bit of emotion in her book too. Overall, I think it is an important contribution to the ethnographic literary circle.
