When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer (Golden Kite Honors), by Walt Whitman, Loren Long

Leave time for wonder.
Walt Whitman's "When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer" is an enduring celebration of the imagination. Here, Whitman's wise words are beautifully recast by New York Times #1 best-selling illustrator Loren Long to tell the story of a boy's fascination with the heavens. Toy rocket in hand, the boy finds himself in a crowded, stuffy lecture hall. At first he is amazed by the charts and the figures. But when he finds himself overwhelmed by the pontifications of an academic, he retreats to the great outdoors and does something as universal as the stars themselves...
he dreams.

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4–Long has taken a portion of Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" and used it as a text for a picture-book story. His lush, realistic, single- and double-page paintings illuminate the tale of a boy who is taken to an academic lecture, becomes bored, and walks out alone to look at the night sky. Line drawings by Long's two sons accompany the text of the poem: "When I heard the learn'd astronomer;/When the proofs, the figures, were ranged in columns before me;/When I was shown the charts and the diagrams,/to add, divide, and measure them…How soon, unaccountable, I became tired and sick;/Till rising and gliding out, I wander'd off by myself,/In the mystical moist night-air,/and from time to time,/Look'd up in perfect silence at the stars." Whitman's words, like the pictured astronomy lecture, are not well suited to young readers. A far better introduction to the poet, designed for children old enough to begin to understand his work, is Jonathan Levin's wonderful Poetry for Young People: Walt Whitman (Sterling, 1997).–Kathleen Whalin, York Public Library, ME

From Booklist
*Starred Review* K-Gr. 3. When last we saw Long's gorgeous acrylic paintings, they were singing backup for Madonna in Mr. Peabody's Apples (2003). Now the artist turns his attention to another era's brash individualist. Unlike this season's biography of Walt Whitman by Barbara Kerley, reviewed on p.577, Long's story-in-images makes a fine introduction for very young children. His interpretation of Whitman's eight-line rebuke of stuffy pragmatism tells a familiar story: A little boy obsessed with outer space has been dragged to an astronomy lecture. Unable to make sense of the speaker's pontifications, the fidgety youngster takes his toy rocket ship outside, where he marvels at the "perfect silence of the stars, casting a decisive vote for creative speculation over chilly analysis." The painterly artwork, as controlled as the logical, grown-up world it portrays, gets its own injection of childlike wonder through playful doodles contributed by Long's two children, and it's so convincingly reproduced that many scribble-wary librarians will do a double take. Although the brooding tone of both the poem and the art makes this a less carefree entree to transcendentalism than D. B. Johnson's Henry Hikes to Fitchburg (1999), children will easily relate to the boy's crushing boredom, while adults will smile at the parents' overzealous efforts to nourish his passions. Walt Whitman (1819-1892), arguably one of America's most influential and innovative poets, was born into a working-class family in West Hills, New York, and grew up in Brooklyn. His Leaves of Grass, from which "When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer" comes, is considered one of the central volumes in the history of world poetry. While most other major writers of his time enjoyed a highly structured, classical education at private institutions, Whitman forged his own rough and informal curriculum, and his brief stint at teaching suggests that Whitman employed what were then progressive techniques -- encouraging students to think aloud rather than simply recite, and involving his students in educational games.

An Antidote for the Ignorant Left Brainers
By B. Songy
I have purchased this book for all of my extended family members. Loren Long's portraits are, consciously or subconsciously, the answer to most of what ails humanity...ignore pretense, sometimes parents will unintentionally lead you astray, question everything, don't be easily impressed, don't control or be controlled, ignore the masses, listen to your body, inspire change, FEEL!, bridge the seen and unseen, reflect, the truth is out there, the smallest light is most easily seen in darkness. And most importantly, reciprocity in flight. It's all there for those who see and feel with their hearts rather than their eyes and hands.

Uncle Walt rules
By C. G. Hale
I wish I had this book when I was teaching 19th-century American literature to college freshmen. I bought a few weeks ago and have been reading it to my daughters--the oldest is 5. She loves the art, and so do I. Tonight, out of the blue, she recited most of the poem to me over dinner--we had never before worked on memorizing this or any other poem, but I had mentioned to her that this would be a good poem to memorize. Looks like she agreed. I'm forever grateful to Loren Long for giving Walt to my daughter at such an early age.

I can't seem to understand the negativity expressed by some of the other reviewers. To call this poem anti-intellectual doesn't make much sense to me. It does, however, make sense to balance intellectual inquiry with the wonder and appreciation afforded by observation. The reviewer who mentions sharing his telescope ought to agree, since the children who peer through it clearly are excited by wonder--otherwise, why not just Google "Saturn" and find even better images? Gazing up at the sky--whether with the eye or through a telescope--excited the imagination, and there's something to be said for contemplating the stars in silence. What astronomer hasn't?

A book with staying power
By R. Detzner
My twin daughters were riveted by this book when they were just over three-years-old. They returned to it again and again. It had a quiet, solemn quality that I thought might go over their heads, but it seemed like the opposite was true. There was a lovely synthesis of poetry and image that gave this staying power. It's time to get a copy again to see how they respond. But I'd avoid hypothetical statements of "most children won't understand...(blah, blah, blah). Try 'em, and maybe they'll show you something unexpected.

Riemannian Geometry, by Luther Pfahler Eisenhart

In his classic work of geometry, Euclid focused on the properties of flat surfaces. In the age of exploration, mapmakers such as Mercator had to concern themselves with the properties of spherical surfaces. The study of curved surfaces, or non-Euclidean geometry, flowered in the late nineteenth century, as mathematicians such as Riemann increasingly questioned Euclid's parallel postulate, and by relaxing this constraint derived a wealth of new results. These seemingly abstract properties found immediate application in physics upon Einstein's introduction of the general theory of relativity.

In this book, Eisenhart succinctly surveys the key concepts of Riemannian geometry, addressing mathematicians and theoretical physicists alike.

The best classical-style exposition of Riemannian Geometry.
By Nikolai Mitskievich
I bought the Russian translation of this book in 1954 and found that this is the best source of the Riemannian geometry, not only for a beginner (as I was at that time), but also for every specialist. Some items fully discussed there by L.P. Eisenhart were even rediscovered decades later --- and published another time as new results. This book is, of course, written in the old good traditional style, one will not find here, e.g., Cartan's forms, but it is really an everlasting treasure. Look also for the Continuous Groups of Transformations by the same author.

The Ladder of Jacob: Ancient Interpretations of the Biblical Story of Jacob and His Children, by James L. Kugel

Rife with incest, adultery, rape, and murder, the biblical story of Jacob and his children must have troubled ancient readers. By any standard, this was a family with problems. Jacob's oldest son Reuben is said to have slept with his father's concubine Bilhah. The next two sons, Simeon and Levi, tricked the men of a nearby city into undergoing circumcision, and then murdered all of them as revenge for the rape of their sister. Judah, the fourth son, had sexual relations with his own daughter-in-law. Meanwhile, jealous of their younger sibling Joseph, the brothers conspired to kill him; they later relented and merely sold him into slavery. These stories presented a particular challenge for ancient biblical interpreters. After all, Jacob's sons were the founders of the nation of Israel and ought to have been models of virtue.

In The Ladder of Jacob, renowned biblical scholar James Kugel retraces the steps of ancient biblical interpreters as they struggled with such problems. Kugel reveals how they often fixed on a little detail in the Bible's wording to "deduce" something not openly stated in the narrative. They concluded that Simeon and Levi were justified in killing all the men in a town to avenge the rape of their sister, and that Judah, who slept with his daughter-in-law, was the unfortunate victim of alcoholism.

These are among the earliest examples of ancient biblical interpretation (midrash). They are found in retellings of biblical stories that appeared in the closing centuries BCE--in the Book of Jubilees, the Aramaic Levi Document, the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs, and other noncanonical works. Through careful analysis of these retellings, Kugel is able to reconstruct how ancient interpreters worked. The Ladder of Jacob is an artful, compelling account of the very beginnings of biblical interpretation.

From Publishers Weekly
In this often tedious but sometimes brilliant academic work, prize-winning biblical exegete Kugel (The Bible As It Was) conducts us on a grand tour of the meanings and methods of ancient biblical interpretation. Using the stories of Jacob and his children (Gen. 28-35) as a case study, Kugel reads carefully the ancient sources that retell these stories in order to enhance, complete or contradict them. Kugel demonstrates that such ancient sources described the biblical narratives in terms of various motifs that brought fresh meanings to the stories and their place in Israel's religious history. For example, the famous story of Jacob's dream (Gen. 28) is described variously in ancient Jewish texts as a political dream as well as a spiritual one. Kugel draws on the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs to demonstrate ways that ancient Jewish interpreters attempted to explain the lies, vengeance and murder in the Genesis 34 story of the rape of Jacob's daughter, Dinah. Although his study often bogs down in repetition and simplistic conclusions ("What is particularly striking about the motifs examined here... is the extent to which they... have built on one another"), Kugel helpfully guides us through the marvelous world of ancient biblical interpretation. Review
One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 2007

"The Ladder of Jacob is one of the most readable and attractive introductions to the general style of traditional Jewish reasoning from Scripture. It captures the strange combination of playfulness with deadly seriousness that characterizes this exegetical tradition, and which makes studying it so enjoyable. The methods it works with are profoundly interesting to the historian of ideas, who will be aware of parallels in other scriptural religions."--John Baron, Times Literary Supplement

"James L. Kugel demonstrates that . . . ancient sources described the biblical narratives in terms of various motifs that brought fresh meanings to the stories and their place in Israel's religious history. . . . Kugel helpfully guides us through the marvelous world of ancient biblical interpretation."--Publishers Weekly

"In his elegant new book, . . . James L. Kugel takes on . . . perplexing . . . questions with great erudition and admirable lucidity. . . . Whether unravelling some philological tangle or reconciling divergent readings, he has the enviable knack of capturing his reader's attention and keeping it firmly tethered. . . . Whether discussing Reuben's sin with Bilhah or the priesthood of Levi or Judah and Tamar, Mr. Kugel moves easily from moral dilemmas to textual enigmas; his book thus serves as a guide to interpretation as well."--Eric Ormsby, New York Sun

"Biblical scholar Kugel offers an in-depth study of some of the more difficult stories of Jacob and Jacob's family. . . . [A]ny biblical researcher can profit from understanding the questions raised by these text, and analyzing the answers they provide. A valuable resource."--Library Journal

"Highly recommended. . . . James L. Kugel persuasively argues that ancient interpreters did more than simply apologize for the less-than-illustrious behavior of certain biblical figures . . . by demonstrating how exegetical motifs arise from some quirk in scripture. . . . Kugel has written a book that is obviously important for specialists (it will certainly be instrumental in reevaluating the history of the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs), but he is so remarkably adept at making opaque materials accessible to nonspecialists that both novices and the initiated will read his latest work with evident relish."--Choice

"James Kugel...is an expert in the history of biblical interpretation and well equipped to write a book that gives the reader an introduction to and explanation of the ancient exegesis of the particular text from Genesis under discussion in this book.... [It] can be recommended for every one interested in the development of certain biblical traditions, but especially for those interested in the way ancient interpreters treated biblical texts."--S I Cronje, Verbum et Ecclesia

"[Kugel]...takes half a dozen Biblical stories--Jacob's career, his heavenly ladder, the rape of Dinah, Reuben's dalliance with Bilhah, Levi's elevation to priesthood, Judah's victimization of Tamar--and invites the reader to accompany him in a survey of ancient Biblical commentaries which range far beyond the well known canonical literature...James Kugel has presented the reader with a dazzling array of Midrashic and other texts which testify to the extraordinary vitality of the rabbinic mind and its successors in unpackaging the hidden meanings in the Hebrew Bible."--Arnold Ages, Chicago Jewish Star

"[Kugel] masterfully reveals why mishnaic, rabbinic, and targumic commentaries make the moves they do by analytically assessing the how and the why in each step. In this sense what Kugel does, helps the most rigid historical-critical exegetes . . . become more alert to the intricacies of the literary-syntactical elements--particularly the cruxes--and also become more appreciative of the artistic aspects of ancient allegorical methods."--Craig D. Bowman, Book Reviews and Notes

"Kugel . . . most elegantly and convincingly explores how . . . early interpreters conceived of the Bible and of their hermeneutical task. . . . This book--and Kugel's major oeuvre of recuperating early exegesis--is an important, fascinating, and often brilliant endeavor."--Ronald Hendel, Interpretation

"I can certainly recommend Kugel's book as yet another masterpiece of the history of interpretation. It should serve as a guide for others attempting to do so, as well as a wonderful sourcebook for those working on Genesis."--Dan Clanton, Journal of Hebrew Scriptures

"All in all a fascinating and valuable contribution to the history of interpretation."--R. Tomes, Society for Old Testament Studies

From the Back Cover

"James Kugel is the expert in the history of biblical interpretation, and he offers a great introduction to and explanation of ancient exegesis of these parts of Genesis."--James VanderKam, University of Notre Dame

"A wonderful book. The chapters follow their subjects detail by detail with a kind of masterfully unpredictable logic, almost like a detective story."--David Stern, University of Pennsylvania

"James Kugel fuses immense learning with a poignant (yet wary) nostalgia for what he has called 'the God of old'. The Ladder of Jacob could be read side-by-side with Thomas Mann's Joseph tetralogy. Kugel, like Mann, belongs to authentic cultures now vanished or vanishing. Both novelist and scholar temper their ironies with wisdom and a sense of justice."--Harold Bloom, author of Jesus and Yahweh and Where Shall Wisdom Be Found?

A Study of Ancient Interpretationss of the Hebrew Bible
By LBerkowitz
James Kugel reaches deep into pre-Rabbinic interpretions of incidents mentioned or hinted at in the Bible in the life or career of Jacob and his sons. His sources are mainly the apochryphal Book of Jubilees and The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs but also the hardly-known Aramaic Levi Document and the medieval Slavonic Tolkovaya Paleya rendering of the pseudoepigraphon Ladder of Jacob. Prof. Kugel learned Slavonic to be able to use and translate this text. Through the medium of assigning names to motifs in this literature, Prof. Kugel demonstrates how ancient interpreters perceived problems as they read the Hebrew Bible and their solutions to these problems. Simply fascinating.

Hepatitis B: The Hunt for a Killer Virus, by Baruch S. Blumberg

About 375 million people are infected with the hepatitis B virus. It has killed more people than AIDS and also causes millions of cases of liver cancer. The discovery of this deadly virus and the vaccine against it--a vaccine that is sharply decreasing the infection rate worldwide and is probably the first effective cancer vaccine--was one of the great triumphs of twentieth-century medicine. And it almost didn't happen.

With wit and insight, this scientific memoir and story of discovery describes how Baruch Blumberg and a team of researchers found a virus they were not looking for and created a vaccine for a disease they previously knew little about--work that took the author around the world and won him the Nobel Prize.

Blumberg and his collaborators were investigating relationships between gene distribution and disease susceptibility, research that was yielding interesting data but no real breakthroughs. Many viewed their work as more field trip than science. But, through decades of hard work and investigative twists and turns, their pursuit led to the hepatitis B antigen, the elusive virus itself, and, ultimately, the vaccine. As he takes the reader through the detective work that culminated in his incredible discovery, the author recounts with immediacy exciting moments in the lab and in the field--from a hair-raising flight to Africa to an unpleasant encounter with Alaskan sled dogs.

The hepatitis B story is more than a fascinating chronicle of a major discovery. What Blumberg followed to the virus was a trail of remarkable "accidents" that happen when scientists seek answers to interesting questions. Those events, combined with the investigator's determined persistence, resulted in studies that generated a pharmaceutical industry, have far-flung public-health applications, and saved millions of lives.

From The New England Journal of Medicine
Despite its title, this book is not the story of a deliberate hunt for a killer virus. It is the story of the almost accidental opening of new vistas in virology that led to a Nobel prize. It is the story of the boy from Brooklyn who became the persistent, gifted man who wandered into what he calls deep seas and blue waters -- but wandered with an open and perceptive mind. If poetry is a free-ranging, idealized representation of an idea, then this is poetry. In his book, Blumberg sets out some clues and describes some personal traits that could inspire others to go on similar wanderings. Blumberg was first interested in rheumatology, then physical biochemistry, and then inherited variations in susceptibility to disease. During the 1950s, his tool to study differences among human serum proteins was the basic immunologic agar-gel-diffusion technique. He joined the National Institutes of Health in 1957 and further tracked what he called the Ag system through Europe, the Pacific Islands, and South America. Then an unusual precipitin band present in serum from Australian aborigines was noted by his coworker Harvey Alter. The antibody to the precipitin was present in the serum of persons with poor hygiene and patients who had undergone multiple transfusions, some of whom had leukemia. The first clinical publication in 1965 named the band the Australia antigen and described it as a new marker for leukemia. Blumberg then moved to Philadelphia, marking the beginning of the hepatitis story. At the Fox Chase Cancer Center, where Blumberg remained for the next 35 years, a patient with a negative test for the antigen became positive after a mild case of hepatitis. The Australia antigen was soon recognized as a marker for hepatitis, and the hunt for what we now know as hepatitis B was nearly over. Blumberg's persistent work had revealed a new approach to understanding, preventing, and even treating viral diseases. Incidentally, it resulted in fantastic improvements in the safety of blood transfusion. Always remembering his early interest in genetics, Blumberg hypothesized that the Australia antigen traveled in populations in such a way that its controlling genes determined susceptibility to persistent infection with the hepatitis B virus. In later chapters, he expands on that theory in some musings on the human immunodeficiency virus and molecular biology that deserve to be mined by other open and observant minds. There is a chapter on the patenting of a hepatitis vaccine. Unlike the first U.S. patents, which required that working models be submitted for inspection, Blumberg's was a patent on an idea only. It was later proved by others to be an idea that worked. This book shows that it is not the orderly, directed research program that leads to the Nobel, but rather the workings of the orderly, observant mind. The neophyte can take heart from Blumberg's remarks about the system of support in the United States for young people who have ideas to pursue and who can defend their results in peer review; in this country, such young scientists are often encouraged to publish. In contrast, I can remember my surprise at seeing my first experimental work appear as a major part of a published paper with no mention of my contributions. The response of Herr Professor when he was queried was that no value would be accorded to work done by someone under the age of 25. Blumberg's book is easy to read, although it has evidently been cobbled together from writings done at different times. The author is generous in acknowledging the influence of others on his thinking and his work, but he uses the pronoun "we" to refer at times to himself alone and at other times to include his coworkers; the discriminating reader must sort out the author's meaning, which should have been done by an editor. As the author says, this book is less a scientific treatise than a human document. The scientist-reader will not find a report with the orderly format of abstract, introduction, methods, results, and discussion. The book is closer to poetry in terms of its free range, and poetry should be read regularly for relaxation, for inspiration, and for ideas. Paul J. Schmidt, M.D.

From Booklist
Blumberg's career has been a pursuit of inherited variation and susceptibility to disease. His research has taken him all over the world and, because sharing hypotheses and data is vital to it, has led him to work with many diverse individuals and groups. His discovery of the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) resulted from epidemiological studies in different cultures. He tells the HBV story in a lively manner, with touches of humor, imparting that among the many spin-offs from that research has been the "sensational" control of a type of liver cancer, and raising such questions as whether HBV affects the sex ratio of births. Obviously, further research on viral causes of cancer may prove to be of considerable value. The Nobel Prize-winning author has written for both scientists and nonscientists, despite which the latter occasionally may get bogged down in terminology. The reader who sticks with it, however, is rewarded with insights into scientific thinking, for the book beautifully illustrates the forward, sideways, and backward steps involved in the scientific method. Review
"Nothing seems quite so dramatic as the unexpected eureka moment, when, escoreted by the gods of good fortune, scientists somehow stumble upon answers to questions they never knew to ask. This is the story that Baruch S. Blumberg tells in Hepatitis B: The Hunt for a Killer Virus. Blumberg, a U.S. geneticist and biochemist, won the Nobel Prize in 1976 after finding a virus he was never looking for. . . . Blumberg does a fine job at connecting this medical advance to the lives of real people."--Carolyn Abraham, Toronto Globe and Mail

"The discovery by Baruch Blumberg of the Australia antigen, a specific viral marker of the hepatitis B virus, was one of the most important advances in medical knowledge during the past 50 years and had huge implications for preventive medicine. This inspiring book is an intensely personal and interesting account of the work of Blumberg and his close associates who . . . devised the first generation vaccine for [the] infection. . . . [This book] is essential reading for all aspiring scientists. . . . And it should be read by the thousands of people who work on the control and eradication of the hepatitis B virus. . . . It is a gem."--Arie J. Zuckerman, Nature

"Blumberg tells the [Hepatitis B] story in a lively manner, with touches of humor. The Nobel-Prize winning author has written for both scientists and nonscientists [and he] beautifully illustrates the forward, sideways, and backward steps involved in the scientific method."--William Beatty, Booklist

"Blumberg takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the convoluted circumstances that led to the discovery of hepatitis B and the vaccine against it. Blumberg's modest style and vast knowledge combine to make this a thoroughly intriguing look at the scientific research process."--Library Journal

"This book shows that it is not the orderly, directed research program that leads to the Nobel, but rather the workings of the orderly, observant mind. . . . If poetry is a free-ranging , idealized representation of an idea, than this is poetry . . . and poetry should be read regularly for relaxation, for inspiration, and for ideas."--Paul J. Schmidt, New England Journal of Medicine

"Readers will find much to enjoy and absorb in Blumberg's fascinating personal story."--Robin A. Weiss, Science

"Blumberg chronicles with uncanny humor his research team's accidental discovery of HBV, their daily laboratory routines and methodology of research experimentation of HBV, and the eventual development of medicine's first viable cancer vaccine."--Choice

"This book is highly informative and entertaining. It offers a clear account of how basic scientific research is conducted and of the excitement of scientific discovery."--Science Books and Films

"The hepatitis B story is more than a fascinating chronicle of a major discovery. . . . The discovery of this deadly virus and the vaccine against it--a vaccine sharply decreasing the infection rate worldwide and probably the first effective cancer vaccine--was one of the great triumphs of 20th century medicine."--Biology Digest

"In this unapologetically personal memoir, the author tells the story of hepatitis B from his own perspective. . . . [T]he book becomes a distinctive part of hepatitis B history, and it will be an invaluable resource for medical historians in the future."--Bud C. Tennant, Nature Medicine

"Blumberg comes across as self-deprecating and erudite in his book, which is filled with allusions as varied as Robert Frost, Dante and Michael Crichton. . . . As his book shows, Blumberg is not merely brilliant. He is wise."--Marie McCullough, The Philadelphia Inquirer

An art history classic. Milliard Meiss's argument is strong and really hasn't been toppled yet. Did the black death slow down artistic progress going into the Renaissance?

The Mind's Provisions: A Critique of Cognitivism (New French Thought Series), by Vincent Descombes

Vincent Descombes brings together an astonishingly large body of philosophical and anthropological thought to present a thoroughgoing critique of contemporary cognitivism and to develop a powerful new philosophy of the mind.

Beginning with a critical examination of American cognitivism and French structuralism, Descombes launches a more general critique of all philosophies that view the mind in strictly causal terms and suppose that the brain--and not the person--thinks. Providing a broad historical perspective, Descombes draws surprising links between cognitivism and earlier anthropological projects, such as Lévi-Strauss's work on the symbolic status of myths. He identifies as incoherent both the belief that mental states are detached from the world and the idea that states of mind are brain states; these assumptions beg the question of the relation between mind and brain.

In place of cognitivism, Descombes offers an anthropologically based theory of mind that emphasizes the mind's collective nature. Drawing on Wittgenstein, he maintains that mental acts are properly attributed to the person, not the brain, and that states of mind, far from being detached from the world, require a historical and cultural context for their very intelligibility.

Available in English for the first time, this is the most outstanding work of one of France's finest contemporary philosophers. It provides a much-needed link between the continental and Anglo-American traditions, and its impact will extend beyond philosophy to anthropology, psychology, critical theory, and French studies.

Amazon.com Review
The Mind's Provisions accomplishes something unusual: it bridges the cultural and intellectual gap between Anglo-American "analytic" philosophy and Continental thought. French philosopher Vincent Descombes meets analytic philosophy on its turf when he critiques cognitivism and, more generally, the theory of mind that sees mental states as nothing more than the physical workings of the brain. Descombes reasons in the crisp, orderly style that is characteristic of analytic philosophy, and he systematically and convincingly rejects the limiting features of cognitivism.

Though Descombes makes his argument carefully, his intellectual scope is wider than the dull parsing and logical hairsplitting that renders much contemporary philosophy uninteresting. For instance, he is adept with the anthropology of Claude Lévi-Strauss, the structuralism of Louis Dumont, and the psychoanalysis of Jacques Lacan, in addition to more analytic thinkers like John Searle. In the end, Descombes liberates our thoughts, feelings, and beliefs from reduction to the mechanical workings of brain chemistry and stimuli. Instead, he argues, meaning and mentality are intimately connected with our social contexts and with ourselves, not just our mental hardware. --Eric de Place

Review
"The real strength and the delight of Descombes' (and Schwartz's) book--once one struggles through the more difficult passages--is the treatment he offers to some of the most influential ideas (Jerry Fodor's language of thought) and thought experiments (Putnam's twin Earth, Alan Turing's imitation game, John Searle's Chinese room) in the recent history of philosophy of mind."--Joel Parthemore, Metapsychology Online Reviews

About the Author
Vincent Descombes is the author of "Modern French Philosophy, Objects of All Sorts: A Philosophical Grammar, Proust: Philosophy of the Novel" and "The Barometer of Modern Reason: On the Philosophies of Current Events" Stephen Adam Schwartz, who teaches in the Department of French, University College Dublin, translated Descombe's "The Barometer of Modern Reason"

A Natural History of Shells (Princeton Science Library), by Geerat J. Vermeij

Geerat Vermeij wrote this "celebration of shells" to share his enthusiasm for those supremely elegant creations and what they can teach us about nature. Most popular books on shells emphasize the identification of species, but Vermeij uses shells as a way to explore major ideas in biology. How are shells built? How do they work? How did they evolve? The author lucidly and charmingly demonstrates how shells give us insights into the lives of animals in our own day as well as in the distant geological past.

"A Natural History of Shells is a fascinating biological view of shells as the products of living organisms....We come to appreciate and understand the diverse wonders of economy, function, and construction that can be seen in shells."--Douglas Palmer, New Scientist

"This is a pleasingly different book. Most other popular books on shells help one to identify them. In this book Vermeij uses shells to help understand the ecology, evolution, and history of snails, clams, and other Mollusca, the phylum of animals that construct 'shells.' . . . This book uses both contemporary and fossil shells to explore many ideas and processes in general biology. . . . I have been seeking this book for years."--The Quarterly Review of Biology

"I was swept away by the world of molluscs and found myself fascinated and informed. . . . By the end of the book I was convinced that anyone with a passion for their subject would enjoy and be educated by Vermeij's obvious passion for his."--Biologist

A really good review on shell functional morphology
By rafel
A really good review on shell functional morphology. Easy to understand (if you have a degree on biology or the kind) and very well written. A must-read for anyone entering this world from a scientific point of view.

Transformed my view of nature
By Charles Wohlforth
Vermeij is a man who, although blind, sees the pattern and meaning behind objects in the natural world with insight that is truly transformative. Although this book is about shells, and only shells, it relates them to evolution and geography in a way that takes the read way beyond its nomitive subject matter to something that should widen the mind of any curious reader.

Shells as a Nature's beauty
By Maxim Vinarskiy
This book represents a splendid 'celebration of shells' written by a man with an ardent passion to shell-bearing animals of the Ocean. It is so unique that I recommend it even to professional malacologists (though the book is intended to much wider auditorium and it is not a scientific monograph). "A natural history of shells" is a concise and full of interesting considerations introductiob to study of molluscan shells as one of the most attractive examples of Nature's beauty. The author deals with many aspects of shells ranging from the geometry of their structure to ecology of molluscs (soft-bodies animals) that live within them. So, it is a true "natural history" in the exact meaning of this term as it was understood in the epoch of Linnaeus, Buffon, Cuvier, Darwin and other great naturalists of the past.

Science and Polity in France: The End of the Old Regime, by Charles Coulston Gillispie

By the end of the eighteenth century, the French dominated the world of science. And although science and politics had little to do with each other directly, there were increasingly frequent intersections. This is a study of those transactions between science and state, knowledge and power--on the eve of the French Revolution. Charles Gillispie explores how the links between science and polity in France were related to governmental reform, modernization of the economy, and professionalization of science and engineering.
