A Fun Way to Learn About the Telephone Being Invented
By Conny
Title: Blast to the Past #3 Bell's Breakthrough
Authors: Stacia Deutsch and Rhody Cohon
Illustrator: David Wenzel
Publisher: Aladdin Paperbacks
ISBN: 978-0 -689-87026-2

"Alexander Graham Bell didn't set out to invent the telephone so that my friends and I could make plans to go to the mall; he wanted to create something that would make the world a better place for deaf people," Abigail explains in "Blast to the Past #2 Bell's Breakthrough," a children's book written by Stacia Deutsch and Rhody Cohon.

With one hundred and five pages, this paperback book is targeted toward ages seven to ten years old, has no profanity and no questionable or scary scenes. Illustrator David Wenzel portrays four children on a phone with Alexander Bell talking into a cone on the front cover. The back cover has two paragraphs about the book and a drawing of Bell and mentions the two prior books in the series. Inside there are ten black and white drawings along with a black and white photograph of a painting by W.A. Rogers. Also included at the end of the book is an explanation by the authors of fact verses fiction about Bell and his inventions along with the first two pages of the next book in the series.

The main object of this series is to ask young children what if a person in the past did not create, state, make or invent something that changed our lives today but quit instead. This book hones in on Alexander Graham Bell and his machinist assistant Thomas A. Watson inventing the telephone on March 10, 1876.

Third grader Abigail writes in first person how her history teacher asks twins Zack and Jacob, new student Bo and her to use his time machine to go back in time and convince Mr. Bell to complete his electric speech apparatus. With only two hours to complete the task, the group ends up in Mabel Hubbard's bedroom, where the deaf girl is too sick to deliver a painting of an owl that she did for her fiancé, Aleck Bell. They offer to deliver the painting and when they arrive at the inventor's boarding house, they are tricked by Bell into thinking he is Watson. After they realize who he is, there is a fire in a nearby building and everyone wishes there was a faster way to contact the fire station. The kids convince Bell to travel to current time and see the twins' firefighter father, to verify how the telephone and 9-1-1 saves lives. A fire alarm sounds while they are there and Bell jumps on a fire truck as it goes to a fire in the children's neighborhood. A deaf neighbor used her special machine to call in the alarm and later she shows Bell its purpose. Bell is inspired by it and realizes that battery acid is the clue to solving his phone problem. Going back in time, they help Bell and Watson rewire and make the first telephone call, just in time for the children to get back to the current hour.

The fun in this story is that one not only learns Alexander Graham Bell's mother was death and he taught sign language, but also his wife Mabel was deaf too. One learns a little about teletypes, telegraphs and how telephones are put together, told in an engaging, interesting way even though it is historical fiction. Another great educational book read that not only children will enjoy, but adults can see the humor behind the owl painting Bell's future wife did for him in lieu his working all hours of the night.

I liked Blast to the Past, Bell's Breakthrough. It's mostly about Alexander Graham Bell quitting inventing the telephone. Kids go back in time and try to convince him to invent the telephone. It was a little bit funny, like when there was a fire and then a kid said "call 911" but there was no telephone! I learned about Alexander Graham Bell. It was interesting because they said he might have stolen the idea of the telephone from some other inventor. I would recommend this book

Painting Religion in Public: John Singer Sargent's Triumph of Religion at the Boston Public Library., by Sally M. Promey

A brilliant painter of society portraits, John Singer Sargent also devoted many years at the height of his career to a project of an entirely different order: an ambitious, multi-media decoration titled Triumph of Religion (1890-1919) for the Boston Public Library. The library cycle Sargent imagined as his most important work, however, would ultimately remain unfinished, quietly abandoned in the face of religious opposition, one critical painting short of completion. Truncation dramatically altered possible readings of Triumph, redirecting its narrative energies and generating new meanings in tension with the idea Sargent had proposed. In Painting Religion in Public, Sally Promey tells the story of an artist of international stature and the complex and consuming pictorial program he pursued in Boston. Highly celebrated in its day, with individual panels retaining immense popularity even in the years of discord, this artistic project and its constituent images tell us much about broad cultural and political exchanges concerning the public representation of religious content in the United States.

Sargent's library decoration attracted the attention of multiple audiences and engaged concurrent debates about class, race, art, and religion. Representatives of various religious and cultural backgrounds hailed portions of the cycle as indicative of the strength of their own positions, and reproductions of the images appeared in everything from books and encyclopedias to stained glass and public pageantry. Promey analyzes the conception and production of the cycle, persuasively demonstrating that Triumph of Religion, far from promoting a narrowly sectarian version of religious practice, represented instead Sargent's public recommendation of the privacy of modern belief. The artist recast contemporary religion as spirituality, she argues, linking it not with institutions and dogma but with personal subjectivity. For Sargent, this ideal was a sign of Western, especially American, progress. Carefully reconstructing patterns of reception in an increasingly diverse religious climate, and exploring the extent and character of Sargent's personal and artistic investment, Promey boldly illuminates the work Sargent hoped to make his masterpiece. At the same time, she enriches understanding of religious images in public places and popular imagination.

From Library Journal
Sometimes you can't win for losing in the art world. John Singer Sargent contributed immensely to the technique of portraiture, yet his portraits have been criticized for their lack of psychological insight. Likewise, he devoted his final 30 years to enhancing Boston's civic arena through a mural series at the Boston Public Library, the Boston Museum of Art, and Harvard. At the time, critics called these murals mere decoration at best. Here, Promey (art and archaeology, Univ. of Maryland) focuses on the public library murals, placing the work in its historical context. Sargent, she argues convincingly, hoped to create a ritualized, democratic intellectual space. But given the cultural climate, his choice of a religious allegory for the mural was a grave mistake. The book's only shortcoming lies in its visual reproductions: illustrations are small, black-and-white, and hard to "read." With the murals scheduled for renovation and several Sargent exhibitions just ending, readers are likely to show some interest in this title. Recommended for larger public libraries and libraries specializing in art history.ANadine Dalton Speidel, Cuyahoga Cty. P.L., Parma, Ohio

Review

Winner of the Award for Excellence in the Study of Religion in Historical Studies, American Academy of Religion

"A fascinating new book."--The New York Times

"Painting Religion in Public is a tightly framed study, a model of scholarly argumentation leavened with methodological self-consciousness . . . , [It] offers a powerful example of the impact that the study of visual culture can make as an important contribution to many disciplines as fine art and other forms of visual imagery are woven back into the fabric of social, cultural, political, and religious life."--Daniel A. Siedell, Church History

"A dense and dazzling must-read."--Christine Temin, Boston Globe

"It is most refreshing to have Sargent's mural projects taken seriously at last, and Promey must be congratulated on producing a richly researched, book-length study addressed to one of them."--Mary Crawford Volk, Burlington Magazine

"Nearly thirty years in the making, John Singer Sargent's murals for the Special Collections Hall in the Boston Public Library are a paragon of the so-called American Renaissance. Sally M. Promey's engrossing book lays out the whole imbroglio [and] the relationship of the pictures to their architectural setting."--Keith Miller, Times Literary Supplement

"By addressing the importance of the visual, Promey's book makes a valuable contribution to an aspect of religion that is often neglected. Promey's integration of American history, art history, religious history, and ritual studies, combined with her meticulous archival research, will help scholars in several disciplines understand the complex cultural currents underlying Sargent's mural project."--Paula Kane, Journal of the American Academy of Religion

From the Back Cover

"With very impressive intellectual range, Promey deftly interprets the imagery in the context of diverse social, religious, and cultural currents in nineteenth- and twentieth-century America, and Boston in particular. Painting Religion in Public will instantly become and remain the definitive study of its subject."--David Morgan, Valparaiso University

"Painting Religion in Public is a brilliant book, meticulously crafted, engaging, and challenging. It is full of marvelous insight and a deeply matured sensitivity to Sargent, his experiences, and his art. Sally Promey does a splendid job protecting the genuine ambiguities and contradictions in Sargent's views and in the realization of his plans for Triumph of Religion. Her ability to weave together historical, cultural, visual, and biographical resources without imposing a false unity gives authoritative restraint to her arguments while allowing her enthusiasm and sympathy for the project and the man to come through clearly. This is a truly wonderful work."--Ellen Smith, American Jewish Historical Society

"Painting Religion in Public is a full retelling of the story behind one of the most ambitious and, in its own era's eyes, most important public art monuments in the United States. Sally Promey establishes this importance through a thorough exploration of documentary materials, her creative use of these documents, and a wide-ranging inquiry into both the art and the religious culture of that time and place. Readers in many fields will find the text rewarding."--Marc Simpson, Bibliography of the History of Art, Getty Research Institute

"Promey's thorough study of the contexts of and reactions to this most ambitious of Sargent's projects is not only timely but most welcome . . . .[Her] analysis of the multi-layered and religious attitudes and practices, patriotism, and sociological currents during the three decades of the installation of the murals is intricate and masterful . . . will undoubtedly become the definitive scholarly study of this complex series of murals."--Marianna M. Archambault, Religion and the Arts

Sargent at the Boston Public Library
By A Customer
Although lacking in adequate color plates as expressed by a previous reviewer, this text is wonderful in its description of the history of the mural which took Sargent 30 years and was never completed probably because of the controversy arising out of how religion was viewed in public in 1919, a change from when Sargent started it in 1890. The book describes the history of the mural in the context of its time of diverse social, cultural and religious matters. After viewing the actual mural at the Boston Public Library, where it is, unfortunately, covered with dirt but is being restored and cleaned, one will be overwhelmed with this painting and find the book extremely interesting and full of important historical information, as well as understand why this mural is considered one of the most important pieces of public art.

FABULOUS!!!
By Christine
This book is absolutely brilliant. A previous reviewer expressed their disappointment with the lack of images. I would first like to point out that a lack of images is no reason to give the book only one star, especially considering that they were able to recognize the fact that Promey is the first to write a book on what the reviewer conceded is "a basically unpublished subject." As for the reviewer's claim that this book is only suitable for the Art Historian, I would just like to say that I read this book when I was 13, and still managed to find it thoroughly interesting and engaging. Perhaps the reviewer's need for more pretty pictures than the author (wisely) chose to include is an indicator of a lack of education and imagination on their part rather than a lack of judgment on hers.

Terrific!
By A Customer
A fascinating book -- a major contribution to the history of American visual culture! This is a Sargent I hadn't seen before! The wealth of visual material in Promey's book (works of art, preparatory sketches and studies, photographs, prints, cartoons) provides testimony that Sargent's art was deeply informed by the culture of its time. It was also, as Promey shows, responsive to the artist's own intellectual and personal commitments. Highly recommended!

Irish Nationalists and the Making of the Irish Race, by Bruce Nelson

This is a book about Irish nationalism and how Irish nationalists developed their own conception of the Irish race. Bruce Nelson begins with an exploration of the discourse of race--from the nineteenth--century belief that "race is everything" to the more recent argument that there are no races. He focuses on how English observers constructed the "native" and Catholic Irish as uncivilized and savage, and on the racialization of the Irish in the nineteenth century, especially in Britain and the United States, where Irish immigrants were often portrayed in terms that had been applied mainly to enslaved Africans and their descendants.

Most of the book focuses on how the Irish created their own identity--in the context of slavery and abolition, empire, and revolution. Since the Irish were a dispersed people, this process unfolded not only in Ireland, but in the United States, Britain, Australia, South Africa, and other countries. Many nationalists were determined to repudiate anything that could interfere with the goal of building a united movement aimed at achieving full independence for Ireland. But others, including men and women who are at the heart of this study, believed that the Irish struggle must create a more inclusive sense of Irish nationhood and stand for freedom everywhere. Nelson pays close attention to this argument within Irish nationalism, and to the ways it resonated with nationalists worldwide, from India to the Caribbean.

Review
"This is . . . a most impressive study, not only for its breathtaking scope and Nelson's command of such vast and varied scholarship but for pointing to many unexplored directions for future comparative and transnational studies. This book is a welcome addition to the literature on Irish nationalism and on the construction of group identity."--Patrick Furlong, Nationalism and Ethnic Politics

"Nelson's book is a timely chronology of the quest by both foreigners and the Irish themselves to define and redefine race and identity."--Lar Joye, History Ireland

"Irish Nationalists and the Making of the Irish Race is . . . a wide-ranging work rooted in large volumes of both primary and secondary sources. It succeeds in broadening our understanding of Irish identity by digging up new and interesting intellectual connections between Irish nationalists and the outside world in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries."--Cian McMahon, New Hibernia Review

"The whole book . . . rests on a solid base of original research and analysis. Even when we may be familiar in outline with some of the incidents [Nelson] recounts . . . this book enriches our understanding."--Patrick Maume, Irish Historical Studies

"This is an important book that will chart a way forward to a fuller and more complex understanding of the role of race in Irish nationalist ideology."--Michael de Nie, American Historical Review

"For anyone interested in the development of an Irish national identity in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and its connection to the popular racial ideologies of the same period, this book is an essential starting point."--David T. Gleeson, Journal of British Studies

"His book is a welcome and important addition to the subject of Irish nationalism."--Sean Farrell Moran, Historian

From the Back Cover

"This is a brilliant history of British imperial white racism and Irish resistance to it--and cooperation with it--in Ireland and the United States. From Frederick Douglass and Daniel O'Connell in the nineteenth century to Marcus Garvey and Liam Mellows in the twentieth, we are given here a pathbreaking account of a still unfinished struggle."--Seamus Deane, Keough Emeritus Professor of Irish Studies, University of Notre Dame

"This fine work of scholarship makes a valuable contribution to the literature on Irish nationalism and the history of nationalism generally. Nelson offers a cogent critique of those Irish nationalists who were so caught up in their own narrow nationalistic grievances that any sympathetic engagement with other reform movements was ruled out."--Cormac Ó Gráda, author of Famine: A Short History

"This fine and learned study is based on prodigious reading, presented in a compelling manner, and overall is a most impressive performance. I have immense admiration for it."--J. Joseph Lee, New York University

About the Author
Bruce Nelson is professor emeritus of history at Dartmouth College. He is the author of "Divided We Stand: American Workers and the Struggle for Black Equality" (Princeton) and "Workers on the Waterfront: Seamen, Longshoremen, and Unionism in the 1930s."

The Wisdom of the Serpent, by Joseph Lewis Henderson, Maud Oakes

The tribal initiation of the shaman, the archetype of the serpent, exemplifies the death of the self and a rebirth into transcendent life. This book traces the images of spiritual initiation in religious rituals and myths of resurrection, poems and epics, cycles of nature, and art and dreaming. It dramatizes the metamorphosis from a common experience of death's inevitability into a transcendent freedom beyond individual limitations.

"This is a classic work in analytical psychology that offers crucial insights on the meaning of death symbolism (and its inevitably accompanying rebirth and resurrection symbolism) as part of the great theme of initiation, of which [Henderson] is the world's foremost psychological interpreter. This material is really the next step after the hero myth that Joseph Campbell has made so popular, and provides an understanding of how not to use the hero myth in an inflated way as a psychology of mastery, but as an attainment progressively to be died beyond. [Henderson] is helped by the presence of Maud Oakes, who is a trained anthropologist with exquisite taste in her choice of mythic materials and respect for their original contexts."--John Beebe

Henderson's Seven Stages of Initiatiion
By Steven Herrmann
Steven B. Herrmann, PhD, MFT
Author of "Walt Whitman: Shamanism, Spiritual Democracy, and the World Soul"

The Wisdom of the Serpent is one of the classical texts on initiation in the field of analytical psychology. Written in 1963 with the assistance of Maud Oakes, Joseph Henderson examines the myths, poems and epics of many world cultures and reveals a basic pattern of initiation that depicts the annihilation and death of the ego and its ultimate release into transcendence and spiritual liberation. The theme of the first chapter is the fear of death, or the ego's fear of the unknown (3). This fear, so common during the passage through mid-life turns out to be a natural part of the process of individuation, where the individual must undergo an excruciating experience of death to the limited ego, surrender to the Self and death to the larger reality of the unknowable. In chapter five, he points out that the number most commonly associated with initiation, the number seven, is a number connoting the steps or stages of an inner, as opposed to an outer, journey. The word initiation, he explains is derived from the Latin in ire, "to enter into," and therefore it denotes a temporary withdrawal from outer actions, and especially adventures of a heroic sort. Henderson is well-known for his positing of a transit beyond the hero myth. Submission is the central characteristic of initiation, a strong element of the archetypal "trial of strength" that is carried over from the earlier heroic phase of life and exemplified by the symbol of the seven stages, represented as seven rungs of a ladder leading to Heaven (42-43). While Henderson finds the therapeutic powers of the shaman in the Hebrew and Christian traditions, he cautions that we need to be careful not to strain the analogy between shamanism and Christianity. He shows in chapter 6 that the classically archetypal figure from which all other mythic ancestors' spring is the aboriginal shaman, who is a master of his own initiation, and who stays humbly true to the pattern of his or her own vocation (63). Henderson views the shamanic impulse as the root of the culture-patterns. He defines initiation as an archetypal process consisting of the following seven stages: 1) spiritual education and psychic liberation, 2) engagement and disengagement, 3) descent and ascent, 4) death and rebirth, 5) incarnation and release, 6) coniunctio (marriage, union and spiritual illumination), and 7) submission and transcendence. Each of these 7 stages are said to represent an ineffable mystery of human existence. Understood psychologically, Henderson says that 7 connotes the fullest development of the numbers 3 and 4, in which confidence and trust in the pattern of individuation is represented numerically; this is not just as a process, Henderson tells us, it is a way of life. As an eloquent example of the experience of the acceptance of death Henderson cites Walt Whitman's 1868 poem "Darest Thou Now O Soul" to end the book. This book was published four years before Thresholds of Initiation. It shows the progression of his thought between his excellent chapter for Man and His Symbols and what many consider to be his masterpiece in 1967, Thresholds. WISE SERPENT !!! A VERY RESPECTABLE REPTILE !!!!
By jorma
This is an excellent collection of world-wide myths and some of the belief systems they promulgated!! If you are a student of ancient texts, this is a first class resource, with listings from Babylon to the Great Plains to Africa to India, from Christian to Zen Buddhism, To Quetzalcoatl to the Great Mystery, to the Hindu accounting of the death and rebirth of the Universe, to the Malekulan journey of the Dead !! If there is someone who believes and reveres it, the authors detail and coordinate, weave it together, to search for a common thread that ties it all together. Whatever your belief system is there is surely something to digest here. I found this volume highly readable, and insightful, and you may ( I would surely wager ) discover where beliefs originated, or were derived from, and you may be in for a Shock !!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!! May your path be beautiful for you ! We are all related ! PEACE !!!!

Principles of Animal Locomotion, by R. McNeill Alexander

How can geckoes walk on the ceiling and basilisk lizards run over water? What are the aerodynamic effects that enable small insects to fly? What are the relative merits of squids' jet-propelled swimming and fishes' tail-powered swimming? Why do horses change gait as they increase speed? What determines our own vertical leap? Recent technical advances have greatly increased researchers' ability to answer these questions with certainty and in detail.

This text provides an up-to-date overview of how animals run, walk, jump, crawl, swim, soar, hover, and fly. Excluding only the tiny creatures that use cilia, it covers all animals that power their movements with muscle--from roundworms to whales, clams to elephants, and gnats to albatrosses. The introduction sets out the general rules governing all modes of animal locomotion and considers the performance criteria--such as speed, endurance, and economy--that have shaped their selection. It introduces energetics and optimality as basic principles. The text then tackles each of the major modes by which animals move on land, in water, and through air. It explains the mechanisms involved and the physical and biological forces shaping those mechanisms, paying particular attention to energy costs.

Focusing on general principles but extensively discussing a wide variety of individual cases, this is a superb synthesis of current knowledge about animal locomotion. It will be enormously useful to advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and a range of professional biologists, physicists, and engineers.

Review
"A valuable reference book written by a leader in the field."--Stephen Gatesy, Nature

"A remarkable volume that simply must be read by anyone contemplating any kind of work on, or in imitation of, muscle-driven motion. This is no ordinary summing up but rather a synthesis, an explication of principles--the title needs no disclaimer. . . . [O]ne should read it in short bouts separated by intervals of contemplation."--Steven Vogel, American Scientist

"This is an important work that will be appreciated by anyone interested in animal biomechanics. . . . Alexander is gifted in his ability to choose or create models that are sufficiently simple as to be understandable and tractable, but not so simple that they stray far from biological reality."--Robert Josephson, The Quarterly Review of Biology

"The book will be a godsend for any lecturer looking for a course book about animal locomotion, and many a naturalist will find that it sheds a flood of light on the reasons behind the endlessly surprising things that animals do. . . . [A] 'must have' for anyone who thinks in terms of physics about the way animals work."--C. J. Pennycuick, Trends in Ecology and Evolution

From the Inside Flap
"The lack of a comprehensive text has been the source of substantial frustration to those who teach courses in animal locomotion. It is a great pleasure, then, to see the publication of this book. It is poised to become an instant classic and will undoubtedly serve as the central source of distilled wisdom on the subject for many years to come."--Mark Denny, Stanford University

"One of the major gaps in the literature of biomechanics is a general textbook on animal locomotion, and it is difficult to imagine anyone better suited to write one than Alexander. He is a leading researcher, and his books always convey the interest and excitement of his field to a broad audience. I look forward to using this book in my own classes."--Robert Dudley, University of California, Berkeley

"This is unique, important, and useful synthesis that brings together an analysis of locomotion on land, in water, and in the air. There is no other contemporary book on animal locomotion that is as broad in scope, and I expect that it will become a classic in the field."--Thomas J. Roberts, Oregon State University

Good book
By blarg
The book is a good read. I picked up it up for a biomechanics discussion group. It does a good job of laying the foundation of biomechanics. Dont be afraid of the equations that pop up explaining the principals of biomech, just try and reason through them if math isnt your thing.

Great resource for info, but the author's lack of directness is frustrating at times
By Charles Young
Lots of great info, but this IS NOT a good book for people with ADHD (inattentive type). Alexander made a lot of headway in the field and this book is info-dense, however Alexander will speak for paragraphs prior to ever making a point...meaning he blindly leads you about. This was a required course-text so I had to read it, but I would not be able to tough it out for leisure reading. Moreover, the research lab that I'm in uses a lot of this info as a basis for understanding principles of robotic locomotion.

Unique piece of literature
By Newton Ooi
This book is one of those niche books that gives a thorough comprehensive overview of a topic few people bother to think about. In this case, the various modes of how animals move are explained using words, pictures, and equations. There are many books about how birds fly, or how fish swim, or how felines run, but this book gives a good overview of all these modes of locomotion and more. It covers the mechanics, kinetics, and thermodynamics of the different kinds of motion. For example, one learns how the metabolism, oxygen consumption, and weight distribution changes for a horse as it accelarates from a walk to a full sprint. I recommend this book to anyone interested in biomechanics, biology, or mechanical engineering.

From My Life: Poetry and Truth, Parts 1-3 (Goethe: The Collected Works, Vol. 4), by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Covering the period from his birth in 1749 to his departure for Weimar in 1775, in Poetry and Truth Goethe recalls his childhood and youth as the son of well-to-do, middle-class parents, his education and literary awakening, early loves, and the creation and reception of works from his Sturm und Drang years, such as The Sorrows of Young Werther, Goetz von Berlichingen, and Urfaust. Not merely an account of Goethe's own life, this book also explores the influences on his early years--friends, mentors, famous personages of his time, intellectual movements, cities, and historical events--to draw a lifelike picture of his time.

Classic Autobiography, boring anyway
By April Wilson
Goethe is a bit like broccoli--one should like him better than one actually does. Goethe goes to great lengths to credit everyone who helped him become the most important German author ever. It moves at a very slow pace. It also is somewhat self-deceptive and misleading, as it ends when Goethe was in his late 20's. In order to get a more accurate view of Goethe's life, Dichtung and Wahrheit is best read in conjunction with a traditional biography. Goethe's autobiography appears in 4 parts, and this volume consists of the first 3, which were written earlier, and it is more thorough than the 4th part that appears in volume 5 of this series. Anyone seriously interested in studying autobiography as a genre should read it, even if it is slow going.

The Jews of Islam, by Bernard Lewis

Probing the Muslims' attitude toward Judaism as a special case of their view of other religious minorities in Islamic countries, Bernard Lewis demolishes two competing stereotypes: the fanatical warrior, sword in one hand and Qur' an in the other, and the Muslim designer of an interfaith utopia. Available for the first time in paperback, his portrayal of the Judaeo-Islamic tradition is set against a vivid background of Jewish and Islamic history.

Review
"An elegant and masterly survey. It is a measure of Mr. Lewis's gift for synthesis that all the many findings of recent sholarship, including his own in the Turkish archives, are made to fit into a coherent and plausible pattern."--New York Times Book Review

"Lewis refuses . . . simplistic approaches and tries to explain the complex and often contradictory history of Jewish-Muslim relations over fourteen hundred years. He does this in prose that combines eloquence, dispassion, and wit."--Norman A. Stillman, New York Review of Books

"[A] pioneering and masterful primer."--Jacob Neusner, Boston Globe

A short History
By Muzaffer Muctehitzade
This book is about the Jews lived in Muslim countries. It is not about any certain Jew or famous personalities. Whole story is in general terms. I found the history during the early periods of the Islam very short and on the surface. Key relationships were not elaborated. Most of the information, may be because of availability of the sources was regarding the Jewish community in Ottoman Lands around 15 to 17th centruries. Information about the Jews in other countries is almost non existent but impression was given to make an opinion that it was not as good. There is a section in the book that talks about paralells between Judaism, their way of life and Islam to imply that Islam simply is an extention of Judaism but I find no correlation between their life in muslim countries which the book is supposed to be about and their religion for Muslims did not differentiate Christians or jews, they were both considred monotheist.Over all it is an easy reading but not satisfying for me for it lacked systematic and concrete points.

The Jews of Islam
By Moris Senegor
A very enlightening account of not only the Jewish experience in Islamic lands, but also of the overall treatment of non-Muslim subjects within Muslim territories. This historical background is essential to the understanding of present relations between Islam and the West, as well as Israel and its surrounding Muslim neighbours. Lewis writes in a style easy to read, and yet still academically rigorous. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to get beyond current media headlines and dwelve deeper into the roots of contemporary unease between the West and Islam. As for Jews like myself who grew up in Muslim countries, it is essential reading.

Review
'The Editor's insightful introduction and careful selection of Jung's papers are invaluable in enabling the interested reader to trace Jung's personal quest on the path to the discovery of his own masculinity through his writings on the Hero; the personal and collective unconscious; the Stages of Life; the personification of the opposites; anima/animus; Mercurius and alchemy.' - Ann Casement, Analytical Psychologist/Anthropologist; 'While the power and influence of the animus appears everywhere throughout Jung's writings, John Beebe has judiciously chosen just the right essays to focus our attention on the subject, making this work absolutely essential reading if we are to understand the enigma of the masculine and its role in defining the spiritual meaning of gender.' - Eugene Taylor, Harvard Medical School

Man laid bare, the inside edition
By Kevin Fuller
One thing about Dr. Jung. He doesn't take an impersonal, detached view of his subjects, rather it is obvious he has lived the experiences he puts the analytic lens to, and that with heart. This is perhaps the most personal and heart wrenching work I have read from Jung. He faces the psyche of the male with all the gusto of a matador facing a prize bull.

Although we like to consider ourselves unique, I don't think hardly any of us could argue with Jung's insights on masculinity. It turns out there are a limited number of psychological experiences we can encounter which manifest in yet again a limited number of archetypes. So, the masculine journey we find, follows most closely that journey of the supreme example of the Father, the Sun. The sun rises in the morning, reaches it's apex at high noon where it shines the most light, and makes it's way back down to the nebulous realm below the horizon. Symbolically, in life the male rises from the primordial unconscious, attains Ego after much striving, only to begin to lose libido as he approaches old age, again descending to the unconscious.

But we find Nature abhors a vacuum and this loss of libido is compensated by the Anima, or the feminine side all men possess. We in older age become softer, gentler and more creative, or else we stultify and become rigid, set in our ways as if those ways depend solely on us to carry them forward. Having attained the age of forty five, I can relate deeply to this book and the phases of life it brings to light. Not only in others do I see these psychological workings, but in myself as well.

Because of works like these, I consider Jung a pioneer. Not just in psychological knowledge does he excel, but in the prudential variety as well. One would do good to read closely books such as these and ponder their nuances and even echoes in one's life.

Jung on the Masculine
By Michael P. McGarry
This volume is a selection of writings from the Collected Works of Carl Jung (1875-1961), a selection focusing on the "masculine". The contents of this book would be somewhat surprising for someone expecting a book about "men's issues". When Jung says the "masculine", he is thinking about multiple interacting levels, including (1) the consciousness of real men; (2) the "animus", or unconscious masculine, in real women; (3) the hero myth; (4) the representations of "spirit" in myth; and (5) the alchemical problem of the unification of opposites. Some of these selections focus on the role the father and the mother play in an individual's psyche. There is a whole section devoted to the animus ("The Masculine in Women"), some of Jung's few statements specifically on the psychology of women. About a quarter of the selections are from Jung's late writings, his extended psychological analysis of alchemy. Only a rare mind will understand these works on first reading; most folks will have to delve deeper in Jung's psychology and then come back to these to fully appreciate them. Nevertheless, the selections of this volume may be an excellent introduction to Jung's writings for someone already intrigued by an "expanded" understanding of the masculine.

Bound by Our Constitution, by Vivien Hart

What difference does a written constitution make to public policy? How have women workers fared in a nation bound by constitutional principles, compared with those not covered by formal, written guarantees of fair procedure or equitable outcome? To investigate these questions, Vivien Hart traces the evolution of minimum wage policies in the United States and Britain from their common origins in women's politics around 1900 to their divergent outcomes in our day. She argues, contrary to common wisdom, that the advantage has been with the American constitutional system rather than the British.

Basing her analysis on primary research, Hart reconstructs legal strategies and policy decisions that revolved around the recognition of women as workers and the public definition of gender roles. Contrasting seismic shifts and expansion in American minimum wage policy with indifference and eventual abolition in Britain, she challenges preconceptions about the constraints of American constitutionalism versus British flexibility. Though constitutional requirements did block and frustrate women's attempts to gain fair wages, they also, as Hart demonstrates, created a terrain in the United States for principled debate about women, work, and the state--and a momentum for public policy--unparalleled in Britain. Hart's book should be of interest to policy, labor, women's, and legal historians, to political scientists, and to students of gender issues, law, and social policy.
