Figure and Likeness presents a thought-provoking new account of Byzantine iconoclasm--the fundamental crisis in Christian visual representation during the eighth and ninth centuries that defined the terms of Christianity's relationship to the painted image. Charles Barber rejects the conventional means of analyzing this crisis, which seeks its origin in political and other social factors. Instead, he argues, iconoclasm is primarily a matter of theology and aesthetic theory.

Working between the theological texts and the visual materials, Barber demonstrates that in challenging the validity of iconic representation, iconoclasts were asking: How can an image depict an incomprehensible God? In response, iconophile theologians gradually developed a notion of representation that distinguished the work of art from the subject it depicted. As such, Barber concludes, they were forced to move the language describing the icon beyond that of theology. This pivotal step allowed these theologians, of whom Patriarch Nikephoros and Theodore of Stoudios were the most important, to define and defend a specifically Christian art.

In highlighting this outcome and also in offering a full and clearly rendered account of iconoclastic notions of Christian representation, Barber reveals that the notion of art was indeed central to the unfolding of iconoclasm. The implications of this study reach well beyond the dispute it considers. Barber fundamentally revises not only our understanding of Byzantine art in the years succeeding the iconoclastic dispute, but also of Christian painting in the centuries to come.

Macchiaveli shows in this book a great deal of his capacity to use history as an instrument of analysis of the politics. I would recommend the book, although I would also recommend to have read a couple of other Macchiaveli's works in advance in order to better understand his particular -and clever- way to analyze history. The Prince would be, in my opinion, the least of his workd that should be read in advance.

Politics and the economy--a two way street

The premise of this book is stated early on (Page ix): ". . .I seek to show how certain political variables determine macroeconomic outcomes in a systematic and predictable way. In particular, I provide evidence demonstrating the role of elections and political parties in deciding who gets what, when, and how in the political arena."

This dynamic is a two-way street. On the one hand, he notes that the state of the economy has an effect on elections. Is the economy in bad shape? The incumbent party takes a beating. Is the economy healthy? The incumbent party may reap some rewards.

Hmmm. On the other hand, would that not suggest that the party in power would engage in manipulation of the economy for electoral gain?
Tufte also provides some evidence that the party in power will work to "juice up" the economy in an election year. One story: Richard Nixon sending a personal note to all retirees about his administration having increased Social Security payments (coincidentally, the note arrived just before a presidential election, in October of 1972).

A golden oldie that still has relevance today. . . .

The vehicle for the art is a highly original one: a recipe for America, beginning with "Preheat the world until fiery hot with a hunger and thirst to be free." Wilson's instructions then include "pat out a crust of fruited plains," "measure out meekness and might," "spice with ideas seasoned with dreams," and "place in God's grace and allow to rise." Some artists might have chosen a more reverential approach, but Colon goes a different way. His cooks are a cat and a dog, and in these watercolor-and-ink paintings, the action rolls across the spreads in all sorts of fantastical ways. Purple mountain majesties grow out of teacups, and the cooks pull rainbows out of a sky studded with stars and stripes. In one delightfully evocative picture, immigrants of many countries (including a Pilgrim) fall from the sky, suitcases in hand. They land in a safety net held by the cat and dog. Kudos to the book's designer, whose use of white space and typeface enhance every aspect of the book. Pair this wild, wonderful celebration with The Glorious American Songbook (2005), a tribute to the U.S. in song, and Robert Sabuda's America the Beautiful (2004), a pop-up book for a slightly older crowd. A good book, but for the older child

What I like best about Karma Wilson is her ability to cobble together great silliness and wonderful rhymes. This is not a silly book. It's a great book, but in my opinion, the text goes over the heads of the little ones who would sit on your lap enjoying the pictures (which are great!) but the pictures may keep the older, more appropriate audience at bay because they find the book too "baby-ish." If you're looking for a read aloud book with patriotic themes, this is a great book. If you're looking for some Karma Wilson silliness, I'd suggest trying her book Whopper Cake instead.

A Good Fourth of July Read

My kids love this book and are begging me to buy our own copy. (which is what I am doing) The reverend at the UU Church we attend read the story, and had the kids help act it out, as part of the service commemorating the 4th of July. It is a great book for remembering that we are all part of this land called America, and one that I will use in the classroom as well as here at home.

When I finish reading this book, I have to stop and think about our country and how fortunate I am to live here. Great book for toddlers....

My son is 3 & LOVES Oswald. This is a great sticker book (reusable stickers, like colorforms). It is a hardcover book with colorful pictures & a cute story. The story doesn't follow the cartoon "The Sand Castle Contest" episode like we thought, but its just as cute. I am bringing it to an upcoming family wedding for something to occupy my son, he loves colorforms so this should work nicely. Great buy!!!!

My 2 1/2 year old watches Oswald all the time. The sandcastle contest is one of her favorite episodes. It has all the same great characters as the t.v. episode but the story is slightly different. It is still a fun story and she loves it.

This collection captures C.G. Jung's personality in more than fifty memoirs and transcripts of interviews for radio, television, and film, ranging from a former playmate's impressions of Jung as a boy to an account of a conversation one month before his death in 1961.

About the Author
Issu d'une famille protestante, Carl Gustav Jung etudie au college de Bale et s'interesse de pres a l'Histoire et a la mythologie. Poursuivant des etudes de medecine, il s'oriente vers la psychanalyse. En 1900, il devient assistant a l'hopital psychiatrique de Zurich. Presente a Freud en 1907, il est rapidement considere par ce dernier comme son successeur. Toutefois, les differences s'accumulent. Jung s'oppose effectivement a l'interpretation sexuelle du medecin viennois. Ainsi, la rupture se consomme en 1912. Jung entreprend ensuite de multiples voyages ethnographiques, au Kenya et en Inde notamment, qui lui permettent de mieux formaliser sa pensee. En 1921, il expose dans "Les types psychologiques" un inconscient defini par les pensees, les sensations, l'intuition et les sentiments et divise entre extraversion et introversion. Avec "L' energie psychique", il soumet l'hypothese de l'existence de deux formes d'inconscient, celui personnel et celui collectif, memoire de l'humanite vehiculant les grands archetypes mythologiques. Il devient le fondateur de la psychologie analytique.

Born in 1875, C. G. Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist and innovative thinker whose most influential ideas include the concept of psychological archetypes, the collective unconscious, and synchronicity. He is the author of numerous works, including Memories, Dreams, Reflections and Man and His Symbols. He died in 1961.

Ralph Manheim (b. New York, 1907) was an American translator of German and French literature. His translating career began with a translation of Mein Kempf in which Manheim set out to reproduce Hitler's idiosyncratic, often grammatically aberrant style. In collaboration with John Willett, Manheim translated the works of Bertolt Brecht. The Pen/Ralph Manheim Medal for translation, inaugurated in his name, is a major lifetime achievement award in the field of translation. He himself won its predecessor, the PEN translation prize, in 1964. Manheim died in Cambridge in 1992. He was 85.

FIRST OF ALL, simply because the Collected Works doesn't include the information found here. These are not works of Jung, but the works of others--interviews, characterizations etc. In other words, you will find some information here which you could only dig out with great difficulty, scattered in numerous works.
SECOND, in the interviews Jung is sometimes caught off-guard by a surprise question, and so, forced to develop on the aspects of his theories that he may perhaps have though self-explanatory.
THIRD, you see Jung through the eyes of others -- Esther Harding, Charles Baudoin, Michael Fordham, Charles Lindbergh, and others.
Some subjects, touched upon in this book:

C.G. Jung Speaking is a classic. It is superbly edited by William McGuire and R.F.C. Hull, the former was the executive editor of the Collected Works of C.G. Jung and editor of The Freud /Jung Letters, the latter was translator of the Collected Works until his death in 1974.

C.G. Jung Speaking is a chronological series of interviews and encounters including several kinds of testimony from Jung and about him. Each segment is introduced and given a context ranging from a boyhood memoir of his friend Albert Oeri to six months before his death on June 6, 1961 when he met with the diplomat Miguel Serrano. Topics range from a Cosmopolitan article Diagnosing the Dictators to a discussion with Charles Lindberg on Flying Saucers.

The following is a sample from an informal talk titled Is Analytical Psychology a Religion?

"We all must do just what Christ did. We must make our experiment. We must make mistakes. We must live our own vision of life...People call me a religious leader. I am not that. In this most interesting volume, Jung explains many of his concepts/models in response to interviews, questions, etc. giving the information a different slant & providing needed context on the spot. Topics include: psychological types, anima/animus, the value of artistic expression, the value of education, discipline of children (p. 58 "It is not a rare occurrence for a somewhat severe reprimand administered to a child in his playpen or his bed to affect him during his entire lifetime"), the nature of neuroses, the faults of nations & mobs, the psychological value of land vs. urban living (p. 204 "I am fully committed to the idea that human existence should be rooted in the earth"), individuation vs. therapy, non-politically correct views on the differences between men & women (p. 245 "Women are much tougher than men underneath. To call women the weaker sex is sheer nonsense"), music & analysis, the persona (societal image/roles), mandalas as images of the Self, psychosomatic illnesses, Rorschach tests, mythology & archetypes, psychotherapy & the transference, the nature & value of marriage, Plato, astrology, & more. I took over 70 quotes for my collection.

Some of the most important quotes concern knowledge of self & others despite considerable resistance to it: p. 244 "Men are inclined to resent any interference with their way of thinking and their hidebound convictions" & p. 248 "We must begin to learn about man until every Jekyll can see his Hyde." Further, pp. 129-130 "you always become the thing you fight the most...When you fight a thing you have to get very close to it, it is likely to infect you." Others address differences: p. 194 "different nationalities and different races have different outlooks and different psychologies" & p. 413 "It [Christianity] goes wrong in so far as it believes itself to be the only truth." About the Author
Marion Dane Bauer is the author of many books for young readers, including the Newbery Honor book On My Honor and the New York Times bestseller My Mother Is Mine. Her other titles include A Mama for Owen, If You Were Born a Kitten, Grandmother’s Song, and Thank You for Me! She has retired from the faculty of the Vermont College of Fine Arts MFA program in Writing for Children and Young Adults where she was the first Faculty Chair. She lives in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and can be reached at MarionDaneBauer.com.

John Wallace’s formal training was not in illustration, but rather theology, which he received at Cambridge University. However, he always loved drawing, and one of his early jobs was as a newspaper cartoonist. In his children’s books illustrations, John is particularly inspired by what he calls “the gooniness” of young school children. John and his family divide their time between Brighton, England, and Long Island, New York.

I love this book. I had written that there were some sign mistakes, but, it was me who was confused about the signs (as I realize now after being more careful with the signs). I apologize about my previous review. Spinor fields are Grassmann-valued, in Physics (having to do with the spin-statistics theorem). Also when you use the superspace approach, you introduce extra fermionic type coordinates. The reason why these are introduced is that they allow one to work with commutators, instead of anticommutators, the former being more familiar (from the theory of Lie algebras).

Back to the book, I think it is a great place for mathematicians and physicists to start, in order to understand supersymmetry. The book focuses on d=4 and N=1, which is perfect to start. The book is rather mathematical, in character. Some might complain that it is perhaps too formal, but I feel that without knowing how the yoga of supersymmetry works, in detail, it is probably difficult, if not impossible, to get a sound understanding of this concept.

In all, I highly recommend this book, although it would be also useful to simultaneously look at some other sources. Arxiv contains several good introductions to supersymmetry for instance. I believe it is wise to also look at these more recent sources simultaneously.

Classic intro to SUSY

This book is the classic introduction to superfields. It is very elegant an formal, and appeals to the more mathematically minded particle physics student. It contains almost nothing on phenomenological applications of supersymmetry, and keeps it's hands clean by avoiding messy but important topics, such as regularization of supersymmetric gauge theories.

Necessary but not sufficient

This is one of those books that is still around because
it fills a niche that no modern book has been able
to fill. It introduces N=1 susy quickly and concisely.
The reader must work through every equation in order
to get something out of this book. The reason why people
continue to use this book of equations is because the
equations are right. If you try other books, they are
filled with typos and sometimes even more serious errors.
Get through the first 8 chapters of this book
may be chapter 22 and 24 then get into Argyres' notes
that delve into the modern aspects of supersymmetric
quantum field theory.
