Puppets of Nostalgia is the first major work in any Western language to examine the ritual origins and religious dimensions of puppetry in Japan. Law conducted fieldwork on Awaji, located in Japan's Inland Sea, over a ten-year period. It will interest scholars in a number of fields, including the history of religions, anthropology, cultural studies, ritual and theater studies, Japanese studies, and social history.

Focusing on the puppetry tradition of Awaji Island, Puppets of Nostalgia describes the activities of the island's ritual puppeteers and includes the first English translation of their performance texts and detailed descriptions of their rites. Because the author has lived on Awaji during extended periods of research, the work includes fine attention to local detail and nuanced readings of religious currents in Japan that affect popular religious expression. A much needed, study of the revival of Japanese folk a art

Travellers to, and scholars of, Japan have always marvelled at the wonderfully intricate and romantic Bunraku puppet theatre tradition.
However, few writers in the English language have ever gone beyond the form of the art which is known to us today to look at the root and branch of puppet tradition in Japan. Yet, though the Bunraku tradition can be said to be the ultimate evolved form of Japanese puppet art as a whole, in ignoring the traditions which gave raise to it students of the art are unable to appreciate some of the aspects of the art to their fill extent. This is why this work by professor Law is of such great import to the world of Japanese theatre arts. In deconstructing a single puppet theatre tradition - the Awaji Island school (possibly the oldest in Japan and probably the branch of the art from which most if not all later schools emerged) - right down to its most basic elements, the reader is made acutely aware of the fact that puppet arts did not spring into being, whole and immaculate, in the nineteenth century as some descriptions of the rise of Bunraku might have it, neither were they the product of the partnership of Chikamatsu Monzaemon and the Takemoto Theatre as other schools of thought maintain. Professor Law shows her audience quite clearly how and (the probable reasons) why puppet arts became important to the Japanese people and - which is more - why they retained their popularity long into the Early Modern era when such arts were being almost universally discarded or marginalized on the continent. She reminds us of the socio religious aspects of the art which have become so divorced from the very touristy puppet theatre traditions which form the of the Bunraku Association and presents to the reader physical evidence of the survival of other, older traditions which are equally deserving of study as the monotheistic National Puppet theatre (and, one might argue, which are far more deserving of recognition because of the way in which some of these traditions even now teeter on the brink of oblivion - driven there by the academic indifference of a century and more).
In brief then. A most marvellous book, which has opened up the world of Japanese puppet arts in a way never attempted before.
Clearly the most important work in this area of study for many decades.

Grade 4-7–This first tale in this series is narrated by a knight who calls himself a "free lance," a warrior who wanders on his own instead of promising his loyalty to a particular lord. Traveling through the Badlands, he seeks to secure enough money for shelter and food to last the winter. Lured to a village to participate in a tournament, he finds himself swept into the local lord's greedy plans. If the knight can retrieve a magical crown from the Lake of Skulls, he will be well rewarded. The task seems easy until he encounters a hag complete with "slavering teeth" and "a razor-sharp scythe." The story contains numerous fight scenes in which heads are bludgeoned or totally removed. Though accompanied by pen-and-ink illustrations that show the mostly evil and unattractive characters, the text lacks imagery. Readers may long for more information about the central character's past. The action seems too hurried and the knight's skirmishes are too easily won. This is one knight who survives not just by being heroic - a pile of skulls is testimony to those who've tried this - but on his own wits. -- Waterstones Books Quarterly 20030601 Raymond Chandler goes to Camelot ... Narrated in a hard-bitten, sardonic voice ... aimed at children of 10 upwards whose reading ability is some way behind their chronological age, but it could be equally enjoyed by word-savvy eight and nine-year-olds. -- TES 20030829 Owes a lot to Beowulf and more to pulp fiction: close scrapes with monsters and villains, wisecracks, double and triple crossings and plenty of Tarantinoid violence. The language has the easy clarity of a Paul Jennngs story with a similar wealth of episode ... The energy of Riddell's line drawings matches the hectic pace of the storytelling. One for the lads? All the females are villainous and most end up dead, so it should go down well amongst some of them at least. -- Books for Keeps 20040301 Suitable for pupils of 11 years up ... written to appeal to less able readers ... Funny with a good line in irony ... There are some hefty examples of similes to appeal to the English teacher. excellent series

the first book in "A Knight's Story" by Paul Stewart, illustrated by Chris Riddell. written in first person. Sir Knight is manipulated (but is he really) into making his way to The Lake of Skulls to retrieve a lost artifact.. Stewart's style of writing is sarcastic, realistic and extremely entertaining. his characters are colorful (which Riddell brings to life) written for a younger audience, just means they are meant to be entertaining.. writing for children is tricky.. have to hold their attention, they won't plow through a book like "grown-ups" will.

Interesting New Series

Freelance, a knight and warrior who doesn't hold a steady job, but rather free lances his services to people as needed, is heading through the Badlands looking for work that will give him enough money for food and shelter during the cold winter months, when he meets up with an evil lord. The evil lord promises to give Freelance money, as well as food and board, if he retrieves a magical crown from the Lake of Skulls. Freelance thinks that the job will be a piece of cake, and heads out. However, once there, he encounters a group of evil hags with sharp teeth and even sharper scythes, who will do anything to protect the magical crown from falling into the wrong hands.

Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell's A KNIGHT'S STORY, is an interesting short novel that is sure to appeal to middle readers, especially males. The prose, by Paul Stewart, is engaging and interesting, and the illustrations by Chris Riddell, while a little strange, will keep the reader turning the pages until the very end. Overall, this was an interesting start to an enjoyable new series.

A great story for younger readers

I first was drawn to this book because my ten year old son read several of the Edge Chronicles' books and loved them. My eight year old son had the same response to the Knight's Story 1 - Lake of Skulls. In fact, I have never seen him take to a book like this story and believe me I have tried a lot of books. The illustrations are wonderful and appeal to the children without being gory. Hooray for a great job done by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell! Keep writing! Every mother loves to see their children read.

A wonderful, scholarly treatment of a superb work of art.

Grunewald's Isenheim altarpiece is an extraordinary polyptich, expressive and dramatic, that was painted circa 1510-15 for a monastery church of the Order of St. Anthony, a hospital order. Following the French Revolution, the altarpeice was removed from the monastery, and it therefore can no longer be seen in its original church setting.
Hayum's wonderful book successfully considers the original context of Grunewald's German Renaissance masterpiece to enable the reader to understand and appreciate it in terms of the particular needs and circumstances of its creation. The book, which contains numerous fine (albeit rather small) illustrations, examines the altarpiece's architectural setting, patronage, place in church rituals, reception by the specific audiences for which it was intended, and its historical setting on the eve of the Reformation.
The first chapter of the book looks at the hospital context of the altarpiece, and illuminates themes of dire illness and miraculous healing that are features of the polyptich panels, and their relationship to the monastery's healing and spiritual missions. It explains how each of the three different stages of the altarpiece (the panels were movable to display three settings) deal with illness in distinct manners.
The second and third chapters discuss how the stages of the altarpiece fit into the devotions of the church calendar, particularly its impact on a worshipper at the Mass. These chapters illustrate how Grunewald's painterly techniques and powerful visual effects work to heighten the impact on the communicant of the work's messages.
The final chapter explores the impact of the altarpiece following its reemergence from seclusion in the middle of the 19th Century. Various prominent artists, writers, and musicians have reacted to the mix of rugged realism and transcendent vision in the work, and the book examines the ways that it influenced them.
All in all, this is a fascinating and rewarding book for the serious art lover or student.

Aeschylean theater resembles that of Zeami in creating its powerful emotional and aesthetic effect through a coherent organization of structural elements. Both playwrights used such methods as the gradual intensification of rhythmic and musical effects, an increase in the number and complexity of the actors' movements, and a progressive focusing of attention on the main actors and on costumes, masks, and props during the course of the play.

little-known guide outshines the others

This little-known, beautiful 439-page guide is one of my favorites, mainly because of the photography. More than 500 minerals are described, and there are 600 color photographs. Unlike some other guides, the color reproduction is wonderful, and the photos are large (some as big as 3" by 5") and clear.

This is more of a "guide to take with you to mineral shows" rather than a field guide. Minerals from all over the world are covered, including interesting rarities such as whewellite, tugtupite, kaemmererite, and cavansite.

I did find a few minor errors. On page 233, for example, the Yukon is described as being in the US (it's in Canada). But generally speaking, the text is well-written and understandable.

Definitely recommended. I'd choose this guide over the Simon and Schuster guide any day.

Best arm chair guide in years

With close to 4000 or so minerals to pick from this one probably covers the more common forms that one might run into at a show or display. It isn't a guide for lugging on an outing due to the world wide coverage.
The sections on Crystallography with its systems and properties of crystal are readable with out the heavy lid condition I remember from college and other mineral books years ago.
The mineral descriptions are grouped according to type with out regard to what section of the world they are found in.
The addition of the tables of minerals and their properties along with the other info and a good glossary round out the book.
The color photos are breath taking, they give the mineral center stage. They all have the size of the specimen in metric. Also the where the sample is from. At the start of each mineral grouping they give a crystallographic diagrams. For the mineral they list the name, chemical form, crystallography, physical properties, chemical properties, names and varieties, occurrence,use and diagnostic features.
Being the book is translated into English there are some minor mistakes that one can over look due to all the other outstanding features of the book. I have enjoyed reading it and still pick it up and page thru it till something catches my eye.

Attractive reference guide

As you can see from the photo I've uploaded... this book is full of attractive quality pictures, a feast to the eyes.

There are included more than 500 of the most common or important minerals, of all the main basic groups, as well as a few others inserted at the authors discretion. They are described in brief, concise accounts, listing e.g. Uses, physical properties, and occurrence. It will be of interest to the vaguely curious as well as the serious mineralogist. It is a handy size (14.3 X 20.4 cm).

I bought this as an introduction to the subject. Thus the opening sections on crystallography and "What is a mineral?" are helpful, although detailed.
Drawbacks to this book are few, although not all the minerals listed are illustrated, and the glossary is very limited and needs to include much more.

About the Author
Jean R. Soderlund is Professor of History and Deputy Provost for Faculty Affairs at Lehigh University. She received her Ph.D. from Temple University and was a post-doctoral fellow at the McNeil Center for Early American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Her book, QUAKERS AND SLAVERY: A DIVIDED SPIRIT, won the Alfred E. Driscoll Publication Prize of the New Jersey Historical Commission. Soderlund was an editor of three volumes of the PAPERS OF WILLIAM PENN (1981-1983) and co-authored FREEDOM BY DEGREES: EMANCIPATION IN PENNSYLVANIA AND ITS AFTERMATH (1991). She has written articles and chapters in books on the history of women, African Americans, Native Americans, Quakers, and the development of abolition in the British North American colonies and early United States. She is currently working on a study of the Lenape people within colonial New Jersey society. She is a council member of the McNeil Center for Early American Studies, and she served as a committee chair for the American Historical Association and the Organization of American Historians.

A Scarlatti Primer..Plus

The first 7 chapters are historical narratives without unusual merit except as an intoduction to the real book which is about music. There is a chapter on harpsichords. Kirkpatrick was not the first thinker on Scarlatti as evidenced by the extensive bibliography and appendix
He did establish the K identification number system which has stood the test of time at least in this country.
His real contribution is in identifying Scarlatti as a real musician writing music of extraordinary merit. His chapter on Scarlatti's harmony is very difficult reading.
The last chapter on "Performance of the Scarlatti Sonatas" should be read again and again by every musical teacher and student (he talks about tempo, rhythm, phrasing, articulation and attitudes).
Of course, one must have the sheet music on hand to see what it's all about, and a mind-set ready to accept Scarlatti into the company of Chopin and Liszt as well as Granados and Albéniz.
Kirkpatrick talks a little about the influence of Iberian song and dance forms on the sonatas of Scarlatti; a few others have scattered hints on this subject. I think the world would welcome a full-blown research here as a fitting sequel to this book.

Bedrock Scarlatti

Ralph Kirkpatrick's 1953 work remains THE book on Domenico Scarlatti and his keyboard sonatas. There have been no substantial revisions in the biography of DS since 1953. Georgio Pestelli and many others have questioned Kirkpatrick on chronology, but when it comes to analysis of individual sonatas, Kirkpatrick is strong. And his performances speak well even 50 years later. Kirkpatrick was not a musicologist, so his book is actually interesting to read!

Must read!

This book is so crucial for any one playing Scarlatti sonatas.

There is so much detail, historical context, and yet the writing is such that even an amateur pianist like me can get a grasp on how to interpret the sonatas. There are some nice sections on how to approach them on the piano.

I wish I could find similar books for every other composer!

My friends and I knew before we got to Arches National Park that it's full of red cliffs arches, and rock formations -- plenty of places for hiking, biking, and getting lost. "So Girls, We Meet Again..."

It's hard to review a book that only took me approximately twenty minutes to read. I'm giving it two stars because, although it wasn't bad, I'll probably have forgotten everything about it in a few days. It's a quick, hurried, throwaway read. There's nothing wrong with that of course...I'm just not entirely sure why I'm reviewing it! Ah well, here goes...

The "Nancy Drew: Girl Detective" series takes the Nancy Drew formula and reshapes it into a new style that is notable for two things. The first is that it's clearly aimed at a much younger audience than both the original series and the "Nancy Drew Files" of the 1980s. The second is that it's told in first-person narrative by Nancy herself.

In a nutshell: Nancy, George, Bess and Ned head out to Moab, Utah for an outdoorsy break and find a mystery when a young woman goes missing whilst on a hike. There are the usual suspects: a squabbling mother and daughter, a gruff Native American antiques dealer, a surly ex-boyfriend, etc. The team investigates, face a number of other (somewhat pointless) obstacles on the way: a flash-flood, an avalanche, a punctured raft and quick-sand. It's not a particularly compelling mystery, particularly with the awkward wrap-up (the villain does the usual monologue in which the entire crime is explained, though it takes place in rather strange circumstances).

However, something must be said for the research that Carolyn Keene's ghost-writer manages to pack into this book. There is plenty to be learnt about Utah's geography, Native American culture, and the desert survival techniques. I knew more than when I started about this particular area, so kudos for that.

A great Nancy Drew mystery. One of my favorites!

Nancy and the gang are in Arches National Park in Utah in this adventurous and fun read that is part of the more updated Nancy Drew series. Nancy’s search to find a park guide that goes missing makes this mystery fun and intriguing and will keep you guessing until the end. Plus, you will find out some interesting information on Native American culture and the South West.

Overall, a good read for Nancy Drew fans. Probably one of my very favorites in the Girl Detective series.
