Good book

Though not introductory, a great book for learning the essential mathematics. It forms an excellent supplement to any mathematical physics course at the sophomore level (Physics/Engineering). The discussions in the book are very deep and sufficiently elaborate to help strengthen the student's understanding of the subject. The best part about the book is that with very few exceptions, one can just pick up the book and start reading it from the topic that he/she is most interested in without worrying about the other sections in the book/pre-requisites.

About the Author
David Hosking is a wildlife photographer who, with his wife Jean, runs the Frank Lane Picture Agency, one of Britain's oldest natural history photo libraries. A coauthor of "Wildlife of the Galapagos", his work has appeared in numerous publications. He also runs Hosking Tours, a company specializing in nature photography holidays. Martin B. Withers is one of Britain's finest nature photographers. He has traveled extensively throughout the world in pursuit of natural subjects for his photography and as a tour leader with Hosking Tours.

A First Rate Guide to all the Wildlife of E. Africa

I've just returned from safari in Tanzania, where this guide proved extremely helpful. It's small and lightweight -- check out its dimensions and weight in comparison to others. Yet it seems indestructable after several weeks of heavy use, high humidity and occasional rains.

Nearly everything I wanted to identify could be found here: mammals and birds, not to mention reptiles, turtles and some trees. The index was simple for a novice to use (omitting most of the Latin names). The pictures and descriptions then helped make identifications fairly easy.

There are many guides available. Those who saw my Withers and Hosking, however, were quick to approve of its ease of use.

My "go to" book while on safari in Tanzania

I took this book, the National Audubon Society Field Guide to African Wildlife by Alden, and the Pocket Guide to Mammals of East Africa by Stuart on our recent six-day safari in Tanzania. The Audobon Society Field Guide includes the most comprehensive information, but I found the Wildlife of East Africa was my "go to" book while on safari and I used the Audobon Society Field Guide only as a supplement. If I were doing it over again, I'd still get both books, but if you're short on space, I'd only get Wildlife of East Africa and skip the Field Guide. The Pocket Guide to Mammals was largely redudant of both of the other books and if I were doing it over again I'd skip that book.

The book is laid out like a typical field guide with animals grouped by family. If you think you saw a jackal, you can easily look up "jackal" in the index and see a listing of all the different types of jackals and flip to that page to read about the different types of jackals and see their pictures. If it turns out it wasn't a jackal, just look a few pages over and you'll find animals similar to the jackal, like foxes and hyenas. I found it very easy to use and the index was very helpful. It might take a little getting used to if you're not super familiar with field guides and how birds and animals are grouped, but it's not too hard to do.

Most of the pictures were beautiful and clear (although there was a least one incredibly pixalated bird picture). The information is helpful and interesting, but this won't serve as an indepth guide for learning all about the animal. I found the information included was all I needed though. While on safari, I preferred to identify the animals and then spend time watching them or looking at the scenery or looking for other animals, rather than reading indepth information about the habits and behaviors of the animals.

Very helpful and handy on Safari

The Wildlife of East Africa was a most valuable asset to me while on Safari in Northern Tanzania. I was able to easily locate, identify, and review the bird and animal sightings and identify by name those that were not familiar to me. I was the envy of the rest of my group. No one else had a handbook that was quite as handy in information and size.

Terrific

This is a beautifully written book about Jewish views and traditions regarding death and afterlife, woven together with accounts of the author's own experiences with mourning and with contemplating and preparing for his own death. There were some marvelous and, in my view, at least, fascinating Jewish texts included, including a midrash that in paradise everyone is grouped with members of his or her own profession, and Maimonides' view that there will continue to be rich and poor even in the world to come. Halkin is particularly attentive to how Jewish mourning traditions and views of the afterlife evolved over time; the regular recitation by mourners of the prayer known as kaddish, for example, "appears first to have become a daily practice in thirteenth-century Germany, from where it spread gradually to the rest of Ashkenazi Europe and beyond."

This material is unavoidably somewhat morose, but Halkin, who was my former colleague at the New York Sun and the Forward, is good, amiable company in confronting it and guiding readers through it. I hope he lives long enough to write more books as edifying as this one.

some interesting speculation

The first (and best) two-thirds of this book surveys Jewish views of the afterlife. Halkin notes that the Torah's oldest books (the Five Books of Moses and the early writings such as Samuel) seem to treat the afterlife as "Sheol"- a realm where all are "gathered to their fathers" and sleep with occasional disturbances, regardless of their conduct in this world. Halkin suggests that this view made sense in a clan society, where people lived in small villages surrounded by their extended family. In such a world, he reasons, being surrounded by your clan after death seems only right (though his view does seem to conflict with the Patriarchs' nomadic lifestyle).

By contrast, in Second Temple times and thereafter, Jews moved around the world, became split into factions, and were stuck with foreign oppression. In such a world, being "with your fathers" didn't seem like a practical goal, and punishing bad guys seemed more important. So the ideas of reward and punishment in the afterlife became more prominent.

The last third or so of the book is about Halkin's own practices and those of his parents. I found this material less compelling than his historical speculation.

Ultimate Journey

Extraordinary investigation of a topic and history important to not just Jews but everyone interested in "Why and Where". Well written and readable it is both an academic presentation and easily readable for the lay person. I found it not only readable but strangely comforting. I am well on my way to "One Hundred and Twenty" and I do feel more comfortable about the voyage. My wife found the topic daunting and was not interested in the voyage though one day we all show up at the ultimate station. So grab your hat or kipah and take a fascinating pre-journey.

Mark-recapture a book of insight

This book went through both the old and new literature of mark-recapture in pretty good detail, though not explicitly on MLE or such in deriving some estimators (though they gave references of others who have).

It jumps around a bit when describing different techniques, but overall I think it is a worthwhile book to have if you are doing mark-recapture analysis, esp. if you use the program MARK by White, and others.

Excellent Guide

If you are new to mark-recapture and need to know how to do the work and analyze it, begin with this book. I would rate this book higher if I could because of the clear writing and applicability. I was stunned to not see this book with 5 stars already.

Remember, as with any book, let this be the jumping off point for your work. The field continues to move, but books are a great place to get your feet wet.

As the first art historian to pursue this connection in detail, Jonathan Fineberg here explores the importance of children's art to the work of key modernists from Matisse to Jackson Pollock. Fineberg's inquiry unfolds in this handsome book, which juxtaposes modern masterpieces with the drawings by children that directly influenced them. Fineberg discusses the effect of primitivism and Freudian thought on some of these artists, and demonstrates how they valued children's art for many reasons, including its naive spontaneity and celebration of the moment, imaginative use of visual language, and its universality and candor. For each of the masters who collected child art, the reasons for doing so are as varied as his or her unique style.

Fineberg has uncovered most of these major collections of child art assembled by celebrated modernists. Many examples from these collections are reproduced in this book for the first time, together with explanations as to why expressionists, cubists, futurists, and others displayed the art of children alongside their own work in exhibitions of the early twentieth century. As an art student, I personally found Fineberg's Innocent Eye highly inspirational and enlightening. Fineberg really puts his finger on the correlation and source of many modern artists expression in the visual arts. Innocent Eye is becomes successful by showing modern artists work alongside the childrens' art that inspired them. It is often difficult to tell the difference between the children's art and the highly accredited artist. A wonderful book for the first-year art student or modern art enthusiast.

i found fineberg's research in the correlation between childrens art and that of the successful artist to be quite compelling indeed. i myself often return to childish doodles and renderings to keep a fresh approach to my artistic style. fineberg should be applauded for this this excellent retrospect being applied to the modern art movement. buy it and enjoy!

In Strong Medicine, Michael Kremer and Rachel Glennerster offer an innovative yet simple solution to this worldwide problem: "Pull" programs to stimulate research. Here's how such programs would work. Funding agencies would commit to purchase viable vaccines if and when they were developed. This would create the incentives for vaccine developers to produce usable products for these neglected diseases. Private firms, rather than funding agencies, would pick which research strategies to pursue. After purchasing the vaccine, funders could distribute it at little or no cost to the afflicted countries.

Strong Medicine details just how these legally binding commitments would work. Ultimately, if no vaccines were developed, such a commitment would cost nothing. But if vaccines were developed, the program would save millions of lives and would be among the world's most cost-effective health interventions.
