Devil in the Mountain: A Search for the Origin of the Andes, by Simon Lamb

How do high mountain ranges form on the face of the Earth? This question has intrigued some of the greatest philosophers and scientists, going back as far as the ancient Greeks. Devil in the Mountain is the story of one scientist, author Simon Lamb, and his quest for the key to this great geological mystery.

Lamb and a small team of geologists have spent much of the last decade exploring the rugged Bolivian Andes, the second highest mountain range on Earth--a region rocked by earthquakes and violent volcanic eruptions. The author's account is both travelogue and detective story, describing how he and his colleagues have pursued a trail of clues in the mountains, hidden beneath the rocky landscape. Here, the local silver miners strive to appease the spirit they call Tio-the devil in the mountain.

Traveling through Bolivia's back roads, the team has to cope with the extremes of the environment, and survive in a country on the verge of civil war. But the backdrop to all these adventures is the bigger story of the Earth and how geologists have gone about uncovering its secrets. We follow the tracks of the dinosaurs, who never saw the Andes but left their mark on the shores of a vast inland sea that covered this part of South America more than sixty-five million years ago, long before the mountains existed. And we learn how to find long lost rivers that once flowed through the landscape, how continents are twisted and torn apart, and where volcanoes come from.

By the end of their journey, Lamb and his team turn up extraordinary evidence pointing not only to the fundamental instability of the Earth's surface, but also to unexpected and profound links in the workings of our planet.

From Publishers Weekly
Lamb, a geologist at Oxford University, melds geological theory and personal observation as he delves into the multilayered mystery of the origin of the Andes. Chapter by chapter, he explores each of the properties of the rocks that make up the earth's surface or an aspect of the planetary forces that contributed to the evolution of the great mountain range. But while the book is presented as a personal scientific journey, the author's dry writing fails to convey his excitement as he begins, literally, to unearth his subject. He does succeed at giving a clear, solid lecture on geological theory and practice with a few personal snapshots of the unseen hazards of fieldwork and occasional local color. Everything is well explained in straightforward language, and each chapter builds logically on what came before. But Lamb has a frustrating habit of implying repeatedly that all will be revealed-but not yet. At the conclusion, using everything that he has taught the reader, Lamb narratively builds up the Andes, starting from the great Ice Age, when they began to form, and moving through their evolution and the effect they've had in turn on the evolution of the rest of the planet, including our own species. While this work may not engage many readers, those interested in geology will find it informative and its conclusion satisfying as it dramatically demonstrates all that Lamb has demonstrated. 36 b&w photos, 38 line illus.

Review
One of New York Times Book Review's 100 Notable Books of the Year for 2004

"An absorbing account of the many years Lamb has spent exploring and pondering the Andes. But the book is not simply about a particular place or one scientific career. Lamb gives his readers a wonderful feel for how geology works- how geologists gather clues, test hypotheses and ultimately come to understand the workings of the world. . . . [The book] make[s] us so familiar with the history of the Andes that they become living things."--Carl Zimmer, New York Times Book Review

"An absorbing account of how geologists come to understand the workings of the world."--The New York Times

"Simon Lamb's book is an enticing blend of personal adventure and scientific explanation. It is an unusual scientist who manages to describe the world vividly but also explain the science clearly. . . . Lamb takes us painlessly through the workings of the great engine of the earth--and what could be more important than understanding how our planet is put together. . . . His descriptions of flogging through the jungle-clad eastern foothills of the Andes leave one relieved to be able to experience it all from the comfort of an armchair."--Richard A. Fortey, Times Literary Supplement

"[An] engrossing and well-written book. . . . Lamb's writing is engaging and clear. . . . Even when he tackles esoteric areas of geophysics and dynamical modeling far from his own field of expertise, Lamb exhibits an enviable facility for simplifying complex and, in some cases, quite controversial ideas. He has keen insight into Bolivian geology and a sympathetic eye for local culture. . . . Devil in the Mountain makes compelling reading. Lamb has done a masterful job in piecing together the Andean puzzle in a way that seems to make perfect sense."--David E. James, Nature

"[Lamb's] prose is lively and for the most part free of jargon. His tales of adventures during individual field campaigns engage readers in a way that a straight science text could not. Most important, he describes particularly well the process by which a field geologist interprets the Earth."--Richard W. Allmendinger, American Scientist

"This book describes physical quests as well as a scientific one. The history of mountains can only be told in millennia, but in America the history of people's attempts to make mountains their own can be told in a few centuries."--Washington Post Book World

From the Inside Flap
"This is Lamb at his best, telling gripping stories of the Earth, making the reader think s/he's sitting with him around the camp-fire during his field work. Lamb sheds some light on a world of science as rarely told; and the listener feels part of his field trip, warmed by the fire and a glass of local brew."--Maarten J. de Wit, University of Cape Town, Rondebosch

"If I were reading this book for the first time and didn't know what to do with my life, I would immediately enroll in the nearest geology program. This account of life on the Altiplano is a masterful integration of geological concepts and personal experiences."--Grant Heiken, past president, International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior, and co-author of Volcanoes: Crucibles of Change and the forthcoming The Seven Hills of Rome

"In this very engaging book, Lamb masterfully blends personal anecdotes about trips to exotic places in different parts of the globe with the science of a fascinating range of geological phenomena and processes to explain how mountains in general and the Andes in particular are built."--S. George Philander, Princeton University, author of the forthcoming Our Affair with El Niño: How We Transformed an Enchanting Peruvian Current into a Global Climate Hazard.

A stunning overview of a great mountain range
By Robert J. Stern
Research geologists rarely spend much energy synthesizing and making their work available to the general public, to both party's loss. But Lamb does that here, giving an accessible overview of the Central Andes that will be of interest to the traveller as well as the geologist. His writing is clear and filled with personal anecdotes that are well-integrated into his story. The combination of travelogue, the tale of a young man building a team and a career, and explanation of modern mountain-building concepts is an unusual way to present the material, but it provides spice and should motivate a wide range of readers to keep turning the pages. It is richly illustrated with detailed illustrations and maps of the highest quality, I can't thank the author and publisher enough for their care in this regard. I have a few quibbles, though. Lamb doesn't note the fact that lithosphere of increasingly young age has been subducted beneath S. America through the Cenozoic, making subduction increasingly difficult and converting an extensional 'Mariana-type' convergent margin into the present 'Andean-type' compressional margin. He doesn't mention the presence and role of 'flat-slab' segments of the S. American subduction zone (and their possible role in raising the Andes). He doesn't consider the importance of trade winds being blocked by Eastern Andes for producing the deserts and empty trenches of the central Andes. But these weaknesses are amply compensated for by the overall product, an ambitious, well-edited, and compelling overview of a great mountain range.

A Fine Geology Primer
By Rob Hardy
"Tourists do not normally go to the places geologists want to visit." These are the words of a geologist, Simon Lamb, who has done years of fieldwork in Bolivia (which tourists go to Bolivia for any reason?) to hunt for an answer to a basic question: How do high mountain ranges form? The question seems so basic to non-geologists; after all, to the rest of us, the mountains just seem always to have been there, and they don't change a bit that we can see. Geologists, however, look at the world in a different way; even the ancient Andes mountains participate in a life and death cycle, and according to Lamb, they are "almost living creatures, and... their life stories are deeply felt by the rest of the planet." He has wonderfully succeeded in conveying a geologist's view of the world in _Devil in the Mountain: A Search for the Origin of the Andes_ (Princeton University Press), which although it looks at his Bolivian exploits in particular, is a fine primer for anyone who wants to learn some geological basics.

The revolutionary ideas of plate tectonics were all well accepted in the 1980s, when Lamb started his career. Though plate tectonics explained much, it didn't answer specifics about the Andes. What made them so high, for instance, and how is it that unlike other mountain ranges, they have a bent rather than straight or sinuous appearance on the map? Through extensive travel within Bolivia in a battered land cruiser, he and his colleagues and students developed a picture of the mountains over the past 65 million years. The picture of the rise of the mountains can be put into order "using not much more than a hammer and a compass", but putting dates on the events cannot be done with simple equipment. Lamb explains potassium / argon dating, the search for tracks of particles of uranium decay within zircon, the process of crushing rocks to determine their strength, sampling helium from volcanoes, and the use of the Global Positioning System for measurements within a few millimeters. Though these technical matters occupy much of the book, it is mostly a chronological memoir about how Lamb came to his current understanding of the formation of the Andes. As such, it is full of adventures, some having to do with unscrupulous natives, or dodgy bureaucrats, or cantankerous machines, told here with good humor.

Using the Andes as a working example, Lamb is able to jam his book full of interesting accounts of finding out how the mountains grew, and contrast them with the Alps, Rockies, or the ancient hills of Britain. The great engine of the inner Earth, powered by gravity and radioactive heat, is revealed to be strange, unlike anything we have to deal with here on the surface, but comprehensible. Lamb shows that the knowledge is vital for many reasons, not the least of which is that the Andes are a force strongly contributing to world weather. The Andes make possible, for instance, the rainforests of the Amazon, and over long geological history probably played a role in the spread of savannah in Africa, which may have changed primate evolution. The forces of such changes are still at work, and are excitingly explained in Lamb's agreeable combination of pure science and field memoir.

Between science and personal adventure...
By Dario Ventra
I bought this book because, as a geologist myself, I am getting interested in the dynamics and tectonic controls of fluvial "megafans" developed along the Andean chain. I thought this little work, straddling the border between a popularization of geotectonics and personal travel diaries, could help me break the ice with the geological context of Bolivia and surrounds... Spot on!
Lamb did a great job, whether you look at it from the technical point of view or from a layman's perspective. Of course the geological insights to gain here are just very basic, they are meant to inform the uninitiated, but the style and the motivation with which a geologist's thoughts are reported, well, they kind of make me proud of my research... (Which I already was anyway!) Maybe the links between orogeny in the Andes and global climatic interactions are way too simplistically explained, and some people might get tricked into believing the climate system is really that! easy and predictable... I doubt... But that's a kind of problem you run into when trying to simplify to the extreme, opening a door for the newbies. No fuss then...
If you want to gain a feeling of what geological fieldwork feels like, if you'd like to learn something really cool on how rocks and mountains develop and behave through time on this planet, and maybe if you could use some insider's advice on how to get about in Bolivia (you never know where research might take you some day eh...), then this is a fun, quick, informative and emotionally rewarding read. I guess we're still far from really having understood the whole story about the Andes, but as Lamb shows, from his very personal point of view, sometimes the journey can be more important than reaching your destination too quickly... It all has to grow inside of you...

The Paradox of Asset Pricing (Frontiers of Economic Research), by Peter Bossaerts

Asset pricing theory abounds with elegant mathematical models. The logic is so compelling that the models are widely used in policy, from banking, investments, and corporate finance to government. To what extent, however, can these models predict what actually happens in financial markets? In The Paradox of Asset Pricing, a leading financial researcher argues forcefully that the empirical record is weak at best. Peter Bossaerts undertakes the most thorough, technically sound investigation in many years into the scientific character of the pricing of financial assets. He probes this conundrum by modeling a decidedly volatile phenomenon that, he says, the world of finance has forgotten in its enthusiasm for the efficient markets hypothesis--speculation.

Bossaerts writes that the existing empirical evidence may be tainted by the assumptions needed to make sense of historical field data or by reanalysis of the same data. To address the first problem, he demonstrates that one central assumption--that markets are efficient processors of information, that risk is a knowable quantity, and so on--can be relaxed substantially while retaining core elements of the existing methodology. The new approach brings novel insights to old data. As for the second problem, he proposes that asset pricing theory be studied through experiments in which subjects trade purposely designed assets for real money. This book will be welcomed by finance scholars and all those math--and statistics-minded readers interested in knowing whether there is science beyond the mathematics of finance.

This book provided the foundation for subsequent journal articles that won two prestigious awards: the 2003 Journal of Financial Markets Best Paper Award and the 2004 Goldman Sachs Asset Management Best Research Paper for the Review of Finance.

Serious Finance
By Qualified opinion
This book and John Cochrane's "asset pricing" complement each other very well. Bossaerts discuss extremely important and overlooked issues in asset pricing theory and empirics in a very compelling way.
As a practitioner with an advanced degree, i found it a valuable read, and recomend "the paradox" to any serious finance practitioner or graduate student.

Let me end quoting the book (p.84):

"Asset pricing theory is both elegant and logically compelling. It is a nice piece of applied mathematics. But this is not suficient to conclude that it has scientic merit. To establish the latter, its predictions need to be verified in a variety of contexts."

Couldn't agree more.

A Feast of Deep and Rigorous Economic Thoughts
By Yuchen Luo
This book of Professor Bossaerts is a feast of deep and rigorous economic thoughts. It is more than worth the time to read it and the money to buy it.
1. It is pure joy to read this book. It takes an expert to deliver technical contents in plain language without the lost of vigor, and a master to make it succinct, and yet a grand master to make it interesting. In the case of this book, the language is captive and the logic is vigorous and easy to follow.
2. The scientific attitude toward research is refreshing. A large number of the models in academic finance have no predictive power, however well they `explain' historical data. Statistically speaking, it simply means that these models do not hold much water. However, few people are willing to say that. Professor Bossaerts says that. Not only does he say that, he suggests the use of experiments (and he did use experiments), which is only natural for a scientist.
3. The author proposes the `Efficient Learning Models' to replace the Efficient Market Hypothesis. With a technically small modification of the Efficient Market Hypothesis, Efficient Learning Models achieves substantially better empirical performance. For a brand new, fledgling model, it is a sign of promise.

Conus is the largest genus of animals in the sea, occurring throughout the world's tropical and subtropical oceans and contributing significantly to marine biodiversity. The shells of these marine mollusks are prized for their amazing variety and extraordinary beauty. The neurotoxic venoms they produce--injected by a hollow, harpoon-like tooth into prey animals that are then paralyzed and swallowed whole--have a range of pharmaceutical applications, from painkillers to antidepressants. This beautifully illustrated book identifies 53 valid species of the southeastern United States and the Caribbean, a region that supports a diverse but taxonomically challenging group of Conus. Introductory chapters cover the evolution and phylogeny of the genus, and notes on methodology are provided. Detailed species accounts describe key identification features, taxonomy, distribution, ecology, toxicology, life history, and evolutionary relationships. The book includes more than 2,100 photos of shells on 109 splendid color plates; more than 100 additional photos, many depicting live animals in color; and 35 color distribution maps.

Poetic Interplay: Catullus and Horace (Martin Classical Lectures), by Michael C.J. Putnam

The lives of Catullus and Horace overlap by a dozen years in the first century BC. Yet, though they are the undisputed masters of the lyric voice in Roman poetry, Horace directly mentions his great predecessor, Catullus, only once, and this reference has often been taken as mocking. In fact, Horace's allusion, far from disparaging Catullus, pays him a discreet compliment by suggesting the challenge that his accomplishment presented to his successors, including Horace himself. In Poetic Interplay, the first book-length study of Catullus's influence on Horace, Michael Putnam shows that the earlier poet was probably the single most important source of inspiration for Horace's Odes, the later author's magnum opus.

Except in some half-dozen poems, Catullus is not, technically, writing lyric because his favored meters do not fall into that category. Nonetheless, however disparate their preferred genres and their stylistic usage, Horace found in the poetry of Catullus, whatever its mode of presentation, a constant stimulus for his imagination. And, despite the differences between the two poets, Putnam's close readings reveal that many of Horace's poems echo Catullus verbally, thematically, or both. By illustrating how Horace often found his own voice even as he acknowledged Catullus's genius, Putnam guides us to a deeper appreciation of the earlier poet as well.

Review
"This study makes an important contribution to classical scholarship in its reassessment of Horace's engagement with Catullan lyric by reminding the reader of the extent of Horace's formal and thematic debts to Catullus and the range of strategies he employs for diffusing the visibility of the earlier poet's influence."--Choice

"Scholars in particular may profit a lot from such a detailed treatment of the subject, but for anyone who is intrigued by the allusions to Catullus that continually surface in Horace, this is the book to consult."--Bruce Arnold, The Classical Outlook

"This new book is thought provoking and persuasive in its argument for 'the ubiquity of Catullus as a presence' in the Horatian lyric corpus. It is also a work that should be of considerable interest not only for students of Horace but also for those who study the relationship between Augustan literature and the literature of the late Republic."--Grigory Starikovsky, Classical World

"P.'s groundbreaking work on Catullus and Horace in the 1960s and 70s finds its complement in his new book, which puts flesh on an old connection that has never been systematically explored. This expanded version of the Charles Beebe Martin Classical Lectures, delivered at Oberlin College in March 2004, provides a fascinating close-up on the way one poet inhabits another."--William Fitzgerald, Journal of Roman Studies

From the Back Cover

"This is a book that has long been needed and I can't think of anyone better to have written it than Michael Putnam. For any scholar working on either Horace or Catullus, this book will be essential reading. Putnam's argument about the extent of their 'poetic interplay' is not only convincing, but also quite astonishing."--Ronnie Ancona, Hunter College and Graduate Center of the City University of New York

"Exceptionally fluent. There is no other book-length study on this subject. Putnam makes a convincing case for the central role Catullus plays in Horace's lyric poetry."--Ortwin Knorr, Willamette University

Michael C. J. Putnam is MacMillan Professor of Classics and Professor of Comparative Literature at Brown University. He is the author of ten books, including "The Poetry of the Aeneid", and coeditor of "The Virgilian Tradition" (forthcoming).

Great Cases in Constitutional LawFrom Brand: Princeton University Press

Slavery, segregation, abortion, workers' rights, the power of the courts. These issues have been at the heart of the greatest constitutional controversies in American history. And in this concise and thought-provoking volume, some of today's most distinguished legal scholars and commentators explain for a general audience how five landmark Supreme Court cases centered on those controversies shaped the country's destiny and continue to affect us even now. The book is a profound exploration of the Supreme Court's importance to America's social and political life. It is also, as many of the contributors show, an intriguing reflection of what some have seen as an important trend in legal scholarship away from an uncritical belief in the essentially benign nature of judicial power.

Robert George opens with an illuminating survey of the themes that unite and divide the five cases. Other contributors then examine each case in detail through a lively commentary-and-response format. Mark Tushnet and Jeremy Waldron exchange views on Marbury v. Madison, the pivotal 1803 case that established the power of the courts to invalidate legislation. Cass Sunstein and James McPherson discuss Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857), the notorious case that confirmed the rights of slaveowners, declared that black people could not be American citizens, and is often seen as a cause of the Civil War. Hadley Arkes and Donald Drakeman explore the legacy of Lochner v. New York (1905), a case that ushered in decades of judicial hostility to social welfare laws. Earl Maltz and Walter Murphy assess Brown v. Topeka Board of Education (1954), the famous case that ended racial segregation in public schools. Finally, Jean Bethke Elshtain and George Will tackle Roe v. Wade (1973), still a flashpoint a quarter of a century later in the debate over abortion. While some of the contributors show sympathy for strong judicial interventions on social issues, many across the ideological spectrum are sharply critical of judicial activism.

A compelling introduction to the greatest cases in U.S. constitutional law, this is also an enlightening glimpse of the state of the art in American legal scholarship.

From Publishers Weekly
This collection of scholarly but accessible essays (George is a professor of jurisprudence at Princeton) addresses the role of the U.S. Supreme Court in interpreting the Constitution. In its 1803 decision in Marbury v. Madison, the Supreme Court asserted the judiciary's province, and in fact duty, to "say what the law is," and since then the justices have regularly decided whether federal or state laws pass muster under the Constitution. Five landmark constitutional cases form the core of this book: Marbury, the Dred Scott case on slavery (one essay is by James M. McPherson), Lochner v. New York on social legislation, Brown v. Topeka Board of Education on equality in public schools and Roe v. Wade on abortion rights (essays are by Jean Bethke Elshtain and George Will). Each case is the subject of a principal essay, followed by a response purportedly written from a different perspective. The prevailing attitude is disapproval of "judicial activism," in which justices, purporting to find their personal moral views enshrined in the Constitution, invalidate acts undertaken by the people's elected representatives. The authors here either advocate "original intent" (limiting constitutional analysis to the text itself and the views of the Founders) or counsel in favor of narrow, fact-based decisions instead of broad policy pronouncements. The principal essays range in style from professorial disputation to impassioned moral advocacy. With one exception (Walter F. Murphy's response to Earl Maltz on the notion of "originalism" as it relates to the Brown decision), the writers of the responsive pieces seem to agree with, and expand upon, the ideas of the main essayists. More contrariety in point of view would have advanced the reader's understanding of how constitutional cases should be decided. Even so, this volume thoughtfully explains the views of those who advocate more of the original Constitution, and less of the Supreme Court, in American political life. (Apr.)

From Booklist
Over the course of American history, the U.S. Supreme Court has been constantly involved in domestic public policy by its actions and inactions, through what some have called judicial activism versus constitutional restraint. For many, the senate confirmation hearings of Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas brought to the forefront original intent and other legal concepts. This book provides an excellent overview of "landmark" Supreme Court cases, most of which impacted the court's power and direction, including Marbury v. Madison, Dred Scott v. Sandford, Brown v. Board of Education, and Roe v. Wade. The individual essayists, mostly lawyers and historians, provide analysis of these cases in the context of the application of judicial concepts that are associated with political extremes. The central argument is that the Supreme Court is not always supreme. It is an important branch of government that provides balance and is balanced by the other branches--when government works well. Vernon Ford

Essays on the Supreme Court
By Michael Taylor
Based on a series of lectures given at Princeton University, Great Cases in Constitutional Law analyzes five major Supreme Court Cases: Marbury v. Madison, Dred Scott v. Stanford, Lochner v. New York, Brown v. Board of Education and Roe v. Wade. The slant of the lectures is clear: the Supreme Court should play less of a role in substantively interpreting the Constitution. Several lectures play devil's advocate: Hadley Arkes defends the notorious Lochner case, while Edward Maltz criticises the hallowed Brown decision. The conservative slant of the book's editor, Princeton Professor Robert P. George, can be seen in the two lectures about abortion. With every other case, one writer generally attacks, while the other defends the Supreme Court's decision. Even with Dred Scott, Prof. James McPhereson notes that the outcome of the decision was not bad--northern anger over the ruling likely prompted the election of Lincoln. But with abortion, both lecturers tear into Roe v. Wade. The quality of both Roe essays, written by Jean Bethke Elshtain and George Will, is surprising low. Both are polemical and disorganized, both wander into the moral and philosophical realms rather than focusing on issues of Constitutional Law. But on the whole, the book represents a fascinating exploration of some of the major Supreme Court cases in US history.

A must-read for every concerned American.
By Kersi Von Zerububbel
I was watching a program on C-SPAN where the Supreme Court's past year was reviewed. I became aware of how shallow my understanding was of some seminal cases like Marbury v Madison, Roe v Wade etc. So I got this book.

The writing style is beautiful and quite succinct. In case after case implications and nuances of the arguments are quite fascinating. I probably would not come down on the side of a strict constructionist interpretation of the Constitution but this book certainly shed some light on my thinking.

I am not a lawyer so this review should be taken for what it's worth. However, if you wish to know more about how the Constitution is interpreted using some seminal Case Law this book is for you.

An excellent resource.

Great Constitutional Cases
By A Customer
This book is superb. Not only does George compile a list of great names in constitutional law into one book, but also these authors give insight into the most controversial cases of all time. For example, Hadley Arkes's defense of Lochner v. New York is astounding. This book is a must for every intelligent citizen.

Aesopic Conversations: Popular Tradition, Cultural Dialogue, and the Invention of Greek Prose (Martin Classical Lectures), by Leslie Kurke

Examining the figure of Aesop and the traditions surrounding him, Aesopic Conversations offers a portrait of what Greek popular culture might have looked like in the ancient world. What has survived from the literary record of antiquity is almost entirely the product of an elite of birth, wealth, and education, limiting our access to a fuller range of voices from the ancient past. This book, however, explores the anonymous Life of Aesop and offers a different set of perspectives. Leslie Kurke argues that the traditions surrounding this strange text, when read with and against the works of Greek high culture, allow us to reconstruct an ongoing conversation of "great" and "little" traditions spanning centuries.

Evidence going back to the fifth century BCE suggests that Aesop participated in the practices of nonphilosophical wisdom (sophia) while challenging it from below, and Kurke traces Aesop's double relation to this wisdom tradition. She also looks at the hidden influence of Aesop in early Greek mimetic or narrative prose writings, focusing particularly on the Socratic dialogues of Plato and the Histories of Herodotus. Challenging conventional accounts of the invention of Greek prose and recognizing the problematic sociopolitics of humble prose fable, Kurke provides a new approach to the beginnings of prose narrative and what would ultimately become the novel.

Delving into Aesop, his adventures, and his crafting of fables, Aesopic Conversations shows how this low, noncanonical figure was--unexpectedly--central to the construction of ancient Greek literature.

Review
Winner of the 2012 Charles J. Goodwin Award of Merit, American Philological Association

Shortlisted for the 2012 Runciman Award, Anglo-Hellenic League

"Kurke's learned and humane book aims to excavate the vibrant popular tradition assumed by Aesop's fables but now largely buried, and restore it to its place in cultural history. . . . Aesopic Conversations is a brilliant and original book, which will transform the way we read early Greek literature."--Tim Whitmarsh, London Review of Books

"There are large ideas in this book. Critical faculties will be honed by reading it."--Vivienne Gray, Bryn Mawr Classical Review

"With her keen eye for symbolic expressions of ideological conflict, Kurke has thrust Aesop into the center of major political, philosophical and literary developments of the fifth and fourth centuries. Precisely because of its ambitions, many of the claims this book makes want weighing. But let it be said that if Kurke sometimes pushes the evidence, she never forces it, and she always gives space to alternative views in substantial footnotes."--Andrew Ford, International Journal of the Classical Tradition

"[Kurke] consistently succeeds in keeping the main lines of her argument clearly in view. Cumulatively her discussion is both rich and persuasive and often quite witty. The Aesop who emerges is altogether a much more complex, influential, and interesting figure than the homespun rustic narrator of 'Aesop's fables.'"--Andrew Szegedy-Maszak, New England Classical Journal

"[A] thoughtful and thought-provoking discussion, here and throughout the book: Kurke makes us look anew at familiar texts, and that is what literary criticism is for."--John Taylor, Anglo-Hellenic Review

"Kurke's . . . approach to the text(s) of the Life of Aesop [is] groundbreaking and sophisticated. While there have been a number of valuable studies of the Life of Aesop in recent decades, few have attempted to grapple in earnest with the specific challenges posed by its anonymity, textual multiplicity, and popular character."--Jeremy B. Lefkowitz, Phoenix

"Kurke's is a very distinctive voice. Her scholarship is always trenchant, thoughtful, and articulate. Her argument is clear, even when intricate and extended, and it has no Aesopic aggressions or sleights of hand. . . . There is much to admire and enjoy here."--Simon Goldhill, Classical World

"Aesopic Conversations is a brilliant book overall, rich in specialized information, and drawing on accurate data and references."--Filomena Vasconcelos, European Legacy

"Leslie Kurke is one of the sharpest and most original scholars of ancient Greek literary culture writing today. Informed, intellectually precise, and always engaged, her work has long been a pleasure and an education. Here she brings all of her considerable theoretical experience to the life and work of that least refined of ancient authors: Aesop. A hick, a foreigner, a slave, Aesop speaks with no kind of authority and yet by all accounts he is wise. Kurke takes this central conundrum as the starting point for a wide-ranging exploration of what it means in ancient Greek culture to be highbrow or lowbrow, gold or dross. Along the way there are some surprising diversions, numerous clever insights, and quite a lot of sophisticated and not so sophisticated fun."--James Davidson, University of Warwick

Aesopic Conversations is a masterpiece. Breathtakingly original, the book illuminates the dynamics of the Aesopic tradition and the intellectual history of Greece. It succeeds in showing that the seemingly marginal figure of Aesop, a fable-telling alleged criminal and itinerant slave, had a central role in the invention of a fundamental medium for all of Western history--serious nonfictional prose."--Richard P. Martin, Stanford University

"This brilliant and exciting book revises major parts of ancient Greek cultural and literary history by revealing the important influence of the Aesopic tradition. Kurke tackles big issues and treats topics with thoroughness and nuance."--William Hansen, professor emeritus, Indiana University

About the Author
Leslie Kurke is professor of classics and comparative literature at the University of California, Berkeley. Her books include "Coins, Bodies, Games, and Gold" (Princeton).

A magnificent work of scholarship
By Romulus
This is a magnificent work of historical and literary exploration into the largely unexplored traditions adhering to Aesop and their influence on the earliest forays into prose by the ancient Greeks.

Was Aesop a real person, or only a figure of legend? On this question, Kurke is "agnostic." Her primary interest is in the so-called Life of Aesop, an anonymously authored biography of the slave who became a sage; this peculiar book dates from around the 1st or 2nd century CE, but may convey traditional stories about Aesop that go much further back, predating Plato. You should probably read the Life of Aesop before diving into Kurke's theories, or read it along with this book.

This is by far the most extensive analysis of the Life of Aesop yet published, so for this reader (an amateur Aesopist) it's pure catnip. Certain aspects of the Life have long puzzled me; what is the exact nature of Aesop's relationship with his master, and why does his visit to Delphi turn out so badly? Kurke's examination of these issues is the most extensive I've read and her explanations are both convincing and exciting. She's not afraid to advance some bold, original ideas, or to make a few fanciful conjectures, but her risk-taking pays off. Kurke's suggestion that Aesop "was a popular contender for inclusion" in the list of the Seven Sages (p. 135) is a provocative idea I have not encountered anywhere else, and her linkage of the "stolen" vessel planted on Aesop by the Delphians with the phiale of the Seven Sages (p. 237) is downright brilliant.

The second part of the book looks at the writings of Plato, then Herodotus; in the works of both authors, Kurke sees the invisible influence of Aesop. Why invisible? Kurke asserts that these authors not only used Aesopic methods of storytelling, but also deliberately concealed that usage--and she tells you why they did so. This is a bit like using infrared reflectography on a medieval manuscript to read the palimpsest beneath; here, Kurke's "technology" is her wide-ranging knowledge of the literature and of the fiendish complexities of the original Greek. In this rarefied arena, an amateur like myself simply has to follow along, and look forward to assessments by Kurke's peers.

Kurke's arguments are meticulously constructed. Her prose is dense and her vocabulary sometimes highly esoteric, but there is an elegance to her writing that makes reading this book a pleasure. I looked forward to immersing myself in Aesopic Conversations each time I picked it up, and I am sad to have finished it (though I know I will be coming back to reread various passages over and over again for years to come).

Creative and insightful
By DKO
I read this book with a special interest in Plato, so I wanted to know more about Greek prose traditions in popular forms, as well as about wisdom traditions. Kurke is a wonderful scholar --her book on praise poetry is terrific, The Traffic in Praise --and this book will be a classic for classicists.

Stable and Random Motions in Dynamical Systems: With Special Emphasis on Celestial Mechanics (AM-77) (Princeton Landmarks in Mathematics an

For centuries, astronomers have been interested in the motions of the planets and in methods to calculate their orbits. Since Newton, mathematicians have been fascinated by the related N-body problem. They seek to find solutions to the equations of motion for N masspoints interacting with an inverse-square-law force and to determine whether there are quasi-periodic orbits or not. Attempts to answer such questions have led to the techniques of nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory. In this book, a classic work of modern applied mathematics, Jürgen Moser presents a succinct account of two pillars of the theory: stable and chaotic behavior. He discusses cases in which N-body motions are stable, covering topics such as Hamiltonian systems, the (Moser) twist theorem, and aspects of Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser theory. He then explores chaotic orbits, exemplified in a restricted three-body problem, and describes the existence and importance of homoclinic points. This book is indispensable for mathematicians, physicists, and astronomers interested in the dynamics of few- and many-body systems and in fundamental ideas and methods for their analysis. After thirty years, Moser's lectures are still one of the best entrées to the fascinating worlds of order and chaos in dynamics.

Way above my head, unfortunately
By Mercator
This book presents some of the research results for which Moser is famous. (He is the "M" of the KAM trio). The mathematical level is far too high for someone like me with only an introductory knowledge of differential equations and dynamical systems. This is not an introductory or expository work, but a reference for the research mathematician.

I find that anything by Donald Lopez will fulfill any expectations I have. Religions is comprehensive, entertaining, straight-forward, and well-organized. I highly recommend it if you are interested in learning the surrounding cultural-religious traditions that have lead to what you now might think of as "Tibetan Buddhism".
